I loved this! We’re finally building up to romance!! So many denials but so many internal confessions I’m excited to read volume 3

Cute, still a solid story. Working it’s way up in the romance department, but still too many denials. All in all, I’m in it for the long haul.

I read this 2nd volume today, enjoying the sun on my skin and I really can’t tell how happy I’m about the fact that Yen Press releases this series in time for summer because this gives so many summer vibes. Seriously, doesn’t everyone have an urge to read at least one entertaining and sunny holiday story, situated on an island or at a beach, with palm trees and the ocean and everything that simply screams SUMMER? Mermaid Boys definitely is such a summer read to me!
This volume was so great with all the characters coming up! I mean, Loa? He’s actually pretty hot and I’m stunned and amazed how loyal he is to Mellow! Then, Moana! Woah! She’s so beautiful, why didn’t Naru fall for her? //laughs By the way, why are literally all mer people so indescribably beautiful?! It’s unfair and a real eye candy XD I’m also worried about Ryou, like how much time has he left? Soooo goooood! I like to suffer, yes. But to be honest, I’m surprised by how much more this series turns out to be than just an “simple” gender bent retelling of The Little Mermaid! All those feelings included make it complicated and realistic at the same time. In addition the fantasy aspect gives it the needed thrill. Yeah, I’m a sucker for fantasy stuff.
I love how this centers around Naru (of course) and Nami and their struggles at building a relations. But even more I am proud to watch Naru’s character growth when reflecting his actions and feelings. Not only for Nami. It’s like I see him becoming adult and responsible. If this story has a happy end and he doesn’t disperse to sea foam, I’m sure he’ll grow to be a good sea king. I’m not only thinking about him, though. I mostly worry about Ryou, as already said, and now that Moana showed up, there’s enough reason to worry and wonder even more which course the plot will take. There are enormously high stakes but it’s still fun to read.
I’m already looking forward to volume 3 and I’ll for sure get and read it as soon as it’s out!

I was slightly disappointed with this volume mainly because it felt there was a big love triangle (is that the right word?) going on. I don't mind a love triangle, but it seemed to put Nami in a bad light. I enjoy her character and think she's stronger than that, which is why I didn't enjoy the way she was portrayed as much.
However, the overall arc of this story was amazing!!! I absolutely LOVED a turning point for Naru that totally reminded me why I cheer for him as a hero. He still brings all the smiles and laughter, but he's learning things that aren't necessarily related to humans only.
Also, good plot twist with that last chapter. Should make a good turn of events in book three (which I am looking forward to despite the stronger sexual overtones in this one).

the sorcerer mellow sent a merman, loa, to the surface to monitor naru. his plans go deeper than that as he plans to assume his identity, taking his place on the throne.
naru figured out that ryo is a merman. he’s been a human for the past eight years, trading his sense of taste so he could kill a human. they are arguing underwater trying to convince him that humans aren’t their enemies. they are still bickering as they hide behind rocks, trying to dry out into their human forms. the two of them are caught by their female friends in a compromising situation leading their friends to think their in a relationship.
loa barneves is a new transfer student. he immediately asks their professor for a seat next to nami, trying to get in the way of naru forming a relationship with her.
naru confronts loa and tries to convince him not to pursue nami. he tells him that she’s rude, violent, & difficult even though he likes her headstrong qualities but she overhears their conversation.
his mother, queen lorelei, is scouring the ocean for a suitable bride to who she thinks is her son. his father, king haruf, is convinced that his behavior is off. she’s not normally mild-mannered and agreeable. his son had strong options that were favorable to the humans.
arashi is her childhood friend but he has a crush on her. he tried to make a move on her at the beginning of the volume but nothing happened. she only sees him as a friend and his little brother interrupted before she could catch on.
it ends in a cliffhanger. the sorcerer convinced his intended betrothed to strike a deal with him. she exchanged her greatest asset for a human body all to unite with the prince. she has one year to convince him to be with her or else she will also turn into sea foam.

Bei dieser Reihe hatte mich Band 1 wirklich sehr überzeugt und ich wollte unbedingt wissen, wie es weiter geht. Leider sind die Mangas nur auf englisch erhältlich und das bedeutet leider wie so oft, dass sie auch deutlich teurer sind. Hier wollte ich aber wirklich dringend wissen, was noch so passiert und habe dann eben den Preis bezahlt.
Der zweite Band konnte mich nicht ganz so begeistern, aber er hat mich trotzdem gut unterhalten. Inhaltlich kann ich kaum etwas sagen ohne zu spoilern. Man erfährt hier mehr über die Absichten des Bösewichtes und unser männlicher Hauptcharakter, Naru, erkennt endlich, dass er die Sache ziemlich falsch angegangen ist. Es gibt einen neuen Bösewicht bzw. Handlanger des Oberbösewichtes. Den finde ich super schön gezeichnet. Schade, dass er einer der Bösen ist. Die Nebencharaktere bekamen allgemein wieder eine große Rolle, was mir sehr gefiel.
Schlussendlich hatte ich aber bei dem Band das Gefühl, dass nicht allzu viel passiert ist. Ich hoffe, dass wird im nächsten Band wieder etwas umfangreicher.
Der Zeichenstil ist weiterhin sehr schön.

2nd manga read for my 30 manga in 30 days challenge
Volume 2 of Mermaid Boys by Yomi Sarachi continues to follow merman Prince Naru as he pursues the human he gave up his tail for. This volume introduces new characters that cause romantic drama in Nami and Naru's relationship and continues with the miscommunication trope.
Naru begins to learn what it means to truly be in love and how to think about his partner. He still has a difficult time communicating his thoughts. I was frustrated with the new characters introduced to cause more romantic drama/confusion between Naru and Nami. They already have a difficult enough time communicating with each other without the help of other people.
I am still interested in seeing how the series will manage to wrap all the plot lines up in volume 3! See you tomorrow for another review!

Ridiculous gender-swapped The Little Mermaid manga, with a conceited prince who's not as hot on land as he was in the sea, and has to compete with several other guys to win the girl's heart before he gets turned into seafoam. It's silly as it sounds and a lot of fun, although the way his mermaid admirer is treated (by the main character and the author) is a bit off-putting at times.

I am really, really enjoying this manga and it makes me sad to know it won't didn't get a proper ending. This volume is really starting to pull me into the story line. This manga is a fresh new breath of life to most little mermaid retailings.

This is when things really started to heat. I'm glad that Naru rediscovered his feelings for Nami and focused less on his possible fate.

Though a generally silly, lighthearted romantic romp, I enjoy the sincere character growth the lead mermaid boy is experiencing. I love the way the author is playing with the idea that mermaids need to give something up to become human.
