Several pages in and I put my kindle down. I picked up my iPad and checked out the rest of this series. I read the blurb for all the future books. Groaned and picked up my kindle again.
Why? I’m glad you asked. The writing is driving me nuts. In the previous one it was the Harvard professor (73 times). In this one it’s the immortal (224 times). It’s hard to read and puts distance between me and the story. Which is a shame because once I get into these books I don’t want to put them down.
I groaned because the series ends. If I’d found it ongoing I would have quit. But book 6 is the final book and if the blurb is anything to go by it’s going to be fabulous.
So I’m back to...
...an uneasy connection with the immortal...
The immortal resisted...
...the immortal pulled himself out of the water.
The immortal studied the line of Bala ants...
The immortal bent and retrieved the case.
These are all from the same chapter. Does it refer to some shady character known only as the immortal? If only. No the immortal is Conrad Greene the main character. And I have another 219 to look forward to.
Anyway soapbox away, kindle out.
As with the previous books the story is fast paced and kept me reading.
(I got an e-copy of this novel through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.)
This is the third book in this series ("Seventeen") I read, and even though I haven't rated those any higher than 3/3.5 stars so far, I must say they do all fall in the "I liked it" category: there are slight changes in the genre itself (man-hunt, artifact/ancient secrets, special services...), things sometimes go too fast for serious character development, but all things considered, whenever I want an action-packed story with guns, helicopters, wild chases and people with powers (immortals), these novels deliver.
Both merit and flaw here: each novel focuses on a different character. Merit, because it allows the author to put these people (immortals as well as their human allies) into situations for which they are more suited than others, and have a bigger picture slowly come together—something tells me there should be at least two more installments to this series. Flaw, because said characters can't be explored as deeply as they would if they were the heroes of two, three, four books. Somehow, we get a glimpse and back-story elements, but there are times when I'd like to see more.
However, as I mentioned above, the "Seventeen" books are pretty good in terms of action, lively fights, and from what I know, believable research, if a little over-the-top now and then (I tend to like a bit of over-the-top, by the way). Picturing each scene is fairly easy, and I'm positive they'd also do great as movies. Hardened secret services agents, assasination attempts, political play on a worldwide level, antagonists that go back to older days, an investigation taking place in several European cities... Mostly those elements make for an entertaining read. Not something I'd discuss at length for a book club, sure, but then, this isn't what I expect from such novels. I expect to be entertained and awed with good action scenes—and those I get.
One interesting thing: the kickass medic. I haven't seen that kind of combination too often (a healer-type character who can also hold his/her own and doesn't have to be protected by the others). All right, Conrad's power is kind of unique, in that all the others who had it are now dead, from what I understood, but it ties into the red thread intrigue going on from novel to novel. I really hope there'll be more about that in the next volume, about those immortals with a specific mark on their skin, and what their role is supposed to be (because there must be one, right?). Both Crovir and Bastian societies are somewhat tied into working with each other, and it sort of hints at a bigger threat looming in later.
There's one side of the story I would've liked to see explored more, though: the consequences of so many heads of state being targeted. The characters realise what's at stake, and do their best to prevent it, but I thought we didn't get to see exactly how things played out for regular people. Did they care? What about the lockdown on airports? How did international diplomacy unfold? It was here, but somehow "in the background", and it made the threat less... tangible.
This qualm put aside, it was a pleasant read. Not too deep, but definitely entertaining.
I greatly enjoyed the previous two books in 'Seventeen' series and this one was no exception. The author once again does not disappoint with very well thought out mystery and another set of great characters - but no one will surpass Jackson for me ;). I want more now! :)
Thanks to A.D. Starrling for sending me and ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Greene's Calling opens with brief chapters in history depicting events that occurred centuries prior to the events that unfold in this current adventure. Next we find Greene floating on a river in the Amazon fishing with his faithful pooch when suddenly a plane plummeting from the sky crashes into Green's house. What Greene discovers in the wreckage sets off all the alarms in Greene's intuition and then we're off on an action packed nonstop journey around the world in hopes of preventing events that could change the world. The story is well crafted with wonderful world building, particularly given this is the third installment in the Seventeen series, and this book can easily be read as a standalone novel. The characters are fantastic and believable providing just the right amount of intrigue, betrayal, greed, and suspense, as well as a generous dose of humor that kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is very satisfying and while there are other characters I would love to see featured in their own standalone stories, it is complete without any of the cliffhanger type events that so often leave the reader frustrated in an ongoing series. I would recommend Greene's Calling to fans of supernatural thrillers with a cast of memorable characters including those that have you gritting your teeth in anger, as well as splitting your sides with laughter at the snarky antics. I received this book with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.

BOOK REVIEW:
as at first very interested in this advanced copy of Greene's Calling that I received free to provide an honest opinion of. I was very intrigued at the idea of immortals and in Greene's past love experience that ended in disaster. I liked that he lived the peaceful life to himself til a plane landed on him concerning his ex love and danger that found him soon on the United States joining her and protecting not only our president, but many other world leaders. I lost interest because I am not very into "terrorist" type books between humans nor immortals.
I am not saying the book was poorly written, nor someone with more technical interest in the army, navy, defense - country vs country mentality opulent have liked it. I just didn't. I read for weeks and continued to find myself reading and re reading to figure who was who when I truly did not care.
I believe many of other types of readers may have found the book interesting. I wonder if the plane falling on Greene's out of the way hidden cabin that originally got him involved was a coincidence? Maybe someone who could have stood to finish the book might have found out of ... Of all the places a terrorist,s plane would crash, why on Greene's remote shack that would force him to become re involved with his ex immortal girlfriend..
Received via NetGalley and AD Starrling for an completely unbiased review
Note: this book can be read as part of the series, or completely stand alone.
Conrad Green lives in the Amazon. He lives a simple life, filled with simple pleasures and the love of a dog. It has been decades since he had any long term connection to the world, and he plans to keep it this way. He has lost everything that once meant anything to him, and now is content to wait out his immortality alone. When a plane crashes into his Amazonian home Conrad finds details surrounding an assassination attempt against the President of the United States. Conrad rushes to Washington to reveal the plot, and becomes the head of the search for the elusive worldwide network plotting to take down all of the world's superpower nations. Time is running out, can Conrad save the world and get the girl that got away centuries ago?
If you're a big fan of over the top military adventures and paranormal fiction, you might just enjoy Greene's Calling. Melding together high octane action, and a group of Immortals who have special powers Starrling creates what can only be described as Clive Cussler's paranormal cousin.
Greene's character is interesting in that he is one of the members of the Immortal race who has inherited strange healing powers from his lineage. He is no stranger to violence and the life style of a warrior. The long-time obsession with Laura seemed a bit far fetched. A few hundred years and he hasn't found another woman to love? Not only this, but Laura hasn't found another lover either? Im not a believer in long term fidelity after a relationship breaks down. Although, I'm not an Immortal either.
Starrling uses well researched real world data to create a world much like our own, and delves into the question of what would happen if a terrorist organization were to attack all major heads of state. How would tense relationships between countries sustain? How would the security details react?
I did not read the previous two Seventeen series installations, but may read the fourth based on a heavy cliff hanger ending that can only promise more fun and over the top experiences. My only recommendation is to throw realistic expectations out the window and try not to take the book too seriously. This is certainly a fluffy, fun read for when you're on the beach!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you!
Greene's Calling is the third book in the Seventeen series. You can also read my reviews of the first books: Soul Meaning and King's Crusade.
Once again, this book is completely different from the first two! The immortals are still the same, and there are some characters from the other books that make an appearance halfway the book, but mostly this is like starting over again. The genre has shifted from man on the run and in search of answers to Dan Brown novel to political thriller is this last instalment (although it's the kind of political thriller that contains a lot of fighting and shooting rather than something more diplomatic).
Greene has been living on his own for some time, trying to get as few human contact as possible. His way of life is brutally destroyed when a small crashes down on his house in the Brazilian jungle. He discovers a plot to assassinate the American president in the papers on board. But that's only the beginning of a much larger scheme...
I enjoyed reading Greene's Calling, just as I enjoyed the other books. I was hoping for more answers concerning the two immortal races, but not really any were given during this book. Greene is (just as both Soul and Alexa) a special snowflake as he - and only he- has an extreme ability to heal mortal people (when I say extreme, I mean extreme). The pace is always fast and there is a lot of action, so if that's something you like, you'll enjoy this book.
I am still new at reviewing and feel like I need to explain why I am rating a book I thought was well written three stars. I would never proceed to try to tell a writer how to write their book, like I have seen other reviewers do. Especially when it may just be me at the moment and the writing is good. I feel a review should tell you what I thought of the story and If I was swept away by the telling of the story. On that note, Greene’s Calling is a book which although wonderfully written and obviously well researched is one that just didn’t sweep me away. I do not want to give you a bunch of back story or tell you what the book was about. In my reviews I want you to see how I feel about a book and not give you a book report version of the read, which is what what many other book bloggers seem to be doing. With that being said, I couldn’t get into this story. I felt like I was missing something. I like reading series and I felt I was not getting enough back-story in the beginning even though it is a stand alone. I wasn’t swept up into the story. It was not a bad story at all, in fact it was good, it just didn’t hook me in. Again very well written and well researched. From the history to the plane crashing into Conrad Greene’s house while he is fishing, I was hoping for just something to let me feel more and get into it more. The “hundreds of years ago love story” wasn’t what I was searching for when picking up the read. I have books one and two in the series thanks to Lady Reader and the author for providing them. I plan on reading these now and reading Greene’s Calling again. I was planning on reading the series in it’s entirety but unfortunately with summer and my busy family activities I ran out of time to read those first. I’m going to start at the beginning now, hoping that I like this book better when I am done. Please read it and decide for yourself. I haven’t given up on it yet. :)
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
It’s hard to be an immortal. You can’t find peace not even you live in a remote Amazon swamp. Immortal hottie Greene lives quietly with his dog, for who he gave his life (literally), until an aeroplane fall on his head – almost. Soon he finds himself in the Oval Office and then across the pond pursuing an elusive organization hell-bent on shifting the power balance of the world.
Greene’s Calling is A.D. Starrling’s third book and the most mature one. It is the third instalment in the award winning, supernatural thriller series Seventeen – seventeen as how many lives an immortal can live.
I like a book when I feel that the author had enjoyed every moment spent writing it. And I’m sure A.D. Starrling had a great time. It’s obvious she did a lot of research in order to describe accurately historical events, scientific facts and different places around the world. The story is well crafted, the descriptions are written with the right touch without being boring, the action is fast paced. All main characters are well described, however I had the feeling I wasn’t attached enough to the main lead.
This book is a page turner, the one you should have in your suitcase if you’re going on holidays. And if you’re interested in the history of Ottoman Empire, you’ll love it.
Conrad Greene has been living alone with his dog, Rocky, in the South American jungle. He doesn't want to be part of the immortal society since his soulmate, Laura, told him she wanted nothing more to do with him. Then a plane crashes into his house and he suddenly has no choice - without him there will be war on a grand scale.
This is the third of A.D. Starrling's "Seventeen" books and once again it is a breakneck read, full of action and adventure and perfect to lose oneself in after a long day. When Starrling switched characters for the second "Seventeen" novel, I was not sure if that would work for me, but now that I am used to it, I like meeting new immortals and finding out their powers and this book explains much more about how that will continue (hopefully). You can read these novels as stand-alones, but I think it would be more enjoyable to read them in order.
Conrad is an endearing and very "human" character with very recognisable traits. The way that he reacts to what is happening around him is very believeable and, once again from Starrling, makes me want him and his friends to achieve their goal without being over sentimental.
I think this has been a great series which I have really enjoyed reading, and I am very much looking forward to reading more in the future.
This sophisticated and intricate novel of deception and intrigue is guaranteed to be a readers' favorite. It has the supernatural elements that appeal to the current generation of readers, but even without that aspect, the suspense and detail of this fast paced, intelligent novel kept me glued to the pages.
I have not yet finished the previous books in this series (I wanted to review this for the tour date) but I know I will read it from the beginning. Then I will continue on, as at the end there are situations yet to be resolved. That is not to say this book alone left me unsatisfied.
I will mention that I loved all the attention given to telling about the dog.
I was gifted this copy so I could give an honest opinion but I really appreciate this chance. People will be talking about this series. You want to read it and be able to add your thoughts.
This has been my favorite out of the Seventeen Series! I loved it! Conrad is an amazing man and that I wish was real! When a plane crashes into his house in the Amazon he gets pulled into an assassination plot that ends his self imposed exile. It brings back Anatole from Soul's Meaning as well as other familiar faces. It also leads Conrad towards the woman he once loved. Can they reunite and forgive 300 year old wounds? It is amazing and out of all of them had a love story that I didn't want to put down. I think Laura Hartwell might be my favorite female character in this series. (Even though I loved Anna and Alexa from books 1 and 2.) Plus there is a huge surprise at the end! You get to meet two very special people that I was hoping we would get introduced to in this book, although; they can't do much yet I can't wait!
This was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end !!! Conrad is an immortal who has been through a Lot, and left it all for some quite tranquility in the Amazon. He is notoriously known there , by the local police and a few neighbors , mostly for his ability to not age. After a freakish accident , Conrad is thrust back into the world he left. Mainly , because of his ex girlfriend. Laura Hartwell, has found her niche. She i s currently working for the President of the USA , in a secret service capacity. The absolute LAST thing she needs is her ex unexpectedly showing up after Years !!!! But when he does, things Really start to go Crazy !!!! This book was just as exciting as the previous two, and the ancestry of the immortal race becomes even clearer!!! I loved the characters, and how the story bobs and weaves and moves forward !!! And seeing old friends is Always wonderful !!! Excited to read the next in this series !!!!
I can't put these stories down! In this one we meet Conrad, another pureblood, who has a unique birthmark - similar to the medical symbol of a staff with snakes twining around it. He has the ability to heal with his touch. Quite a useful trait!
Conrad finds himself working with both Bastian and Crovir groups and the US government to prevent an attack by the remnants of the Ottoman Empire.
This is the third book in the Seventeen series and like the others it is fast paced and full of action. This books carry a lot of description and facts so if your someone who likes to blow through a book you may not enjoy these books. Having said that they are not stuffy or heavy going, just there is often a lot to take in on a short time frame. Well written and enjoyable, just not amazing.
Another great installment in the Seventeen series. Think Angel has Fallen with immortals at the helm of the action. Also excellent description. Sometimes a bit technical so not a book to inhale if you want to get everything that's happening. Looking forward to the next adventure in the series.
I really enjoyed the third book of the Seventeen Series. Conrad lives a secluded life with the company and love of his dog. It has been years since Conrad has come into any contact with people until a plane crashes and finds there is a threat to assassinate the President. He goes to Washington to inform what he has found. He also runs into his long-life soul mate that he hasn’t seen in decades. Neither of them has found new loves to occupy them. But you can’t help who you love and you will be dedicated to the end. But it was a happy ending because the two immortals are back together.
What other blurbs can I use to describe these books? Again the narrator does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. Oh well, buy the book, read the books, get into a good author and some good characters as I have. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
The third Installment tells the story of Conrad. He is linked with the other two major players in the first two stories. Again history is fun as it twines through the stories and provides a backdrop for Conrad’s adventure. Great third story.
Action and history and thrills and romance I believe AD starrling is my new favorite author.I have already recommended this series to several friends and will continue to do so
I’m so glad I discovered this series and author. Just when I thought the plot was feeling long, it lurched ahead strategically and kept my pulse racing! Loved this book! Headlining into the next!
A slowly developing gathering of the clan is emerging; the overall tone of these stories is one of optimism despite the dire, dread machinations of forces aligned against the existing world order.
A new book and new central characters, but the team shows up as needed. The plot has lots of holes in it that allow our heroes to beat the bad guys in the end. Yet, the set pieces are so good that I forgive the somewhat rickety superstructure.
Action packed, interesting, unique story, fascinating characters. The writing flows, and the author writes so you understand the intent of the characters. Love this series!
