- Latham’s book is an excellent primer for fundamental management practices. It is intended to teach managers to become evidence-based—that is, to use management techniques that are supported by scientific evidence—in an engaging way that makes sense to them.
- Latham succeeds on both counts. He offers six key management lessons, supported by scientific evidence and proven in practice, to promote job performance and job satisfaction.
- Latham’s writing is very accessible to a management audience, and he clearly explains the meaning of terms that might be unfamiliar and often provides concrete tools to assist managers in implementing his recommendations.
- Latham strongly advocates for behavioral observation scales, a behavior-based performance appraisal tool, and recommends avoiding any type of bottom-line measure, or results-based appraisal, for individual employees.
On the whole, however, Latham does an admirable job of presenting research-consistent recommendations and providing adequate evidence to support them.
In short, the book is written in such a way that it would be feasible for managers to understand and apply many of the book’s recommendations on their own.

Название не соответствует содержимому, так как ничего более «научного», чем свое мнение автор не предлагает. Книга написана с позиции HR техник, а не общего менеджмента

must read for managers

This book summarized a mixture of things that I learned in my masters program related to people management. It is a one stop shop for any manager that provides tangible research vs how one leader has done it in their company. Give this book to anyone on your team in or wanting to be in a management role.

Only needed to read a couple chapters for a class but found it interesting enough to read the whole thing.
