Switch and Bait

Rate this book
In this charming, sexy, and "laugh-out-loud" ( USA Today ) funny romantic comedy, an online dating ghostwriter's life gets hilariously complicated when she recognizes one of her clients' matches--her ex!--and finds herself forced to flirt with him again, on someone else's behalf...

We switch. I bait.
Let me help you snag a date.

All through college, Blanche Carter was known as the love doctor in her sorority. Now she's parlayed her talent into a unique consulting she runs the online dating profiles of Washington D.C.'s most eligible women.

Armed with a battalion of rules, Blanche expertly helps her clients optimize their profiles and ace that first date. But although she'll happily message handsome strangers (and fend off dick pics) for other ladies, Blanche's most important rule is the one she has for no relationships. She's seen too much heartbreak to believe in real love anymore.

When a former fling pops up among the matches for one of her favorite clients, Blanche gamely messages him on her behalf. Blanche is definitely over him, and this is how she'll prove it. But if she doesn't watch out, Blanche might end up not only screwing over a client--and possibly tanking her entire business--but breaking her rule about love as well . . .

Ricki Schultz's trademark irreverent humor and wry insight into the absurdities of modern dating are both outrageously funny and genuinely moving in her unforgettable new novel.

Just Another Book Bitch's ALWAYS SPOILER FREE REVIEW

description

Switch and Bait is the second novel by Ricki Schultz. I was lucky enough to read her first Mr. Right-Swipe on vacation last year. Imagine my surprise when I got a request to again review another Schultz novel and added bonus...I would be enjoying it again on another beach vacation! Which let me just say... Schultz should be required beach reading material. I was very excited to read this book. I loved her first. You can read my review of that one HERE.

Schultz brings a refreshing fun and young perspective to her novels. With fun charismatic characters that insert themselves in some of the silliest of predicaments.

Switch and Bait centers around Blanche. A single girl helping others find love through online dating.

"When a former fling pops up among the matches for one of her favorite clients, Blanche gamely messages him on her behalf."

As you can imagine this begins to blur the lines between client and a perspective "match"...

I found this to be a very easy read. Perfect for a relaxing day at the beach or poolside if that better suits your summer plans. With quirky characters, a second chance romance that makes you believe in fate, and intermittent with giggle-worthy scenarios I once again tip my hat to Ms. Schultz.

I could say more about this book but that would break my "spoiler-free" rule. Discover the amusing and entertaining writing style of Mr. Schultz. You can pick up a copy of Switch and Bait below.

P.S I'm giving a paperback copy away on the blog! ENTER HERE

Switch and Bait was a refreshing read I found perfect for a relaxing day. This was my first from Ricki Schultz but I easily fell in love with her writing style and I know it won't be my last book I pick up from her. I thought the story was fun and light, and the characters were the perfect combination of quirky and sweet.

This is the type of book that you want to read in one sitting because once you immerse yourself in the world of Blanche Carter you won't want to leave. She and Henry were just so interesting that I found it hard to look away from the pages, and that's a clear sign of a good book.

Overall, this was a unique story that I think many romance readers will love so it gets a big thumbs up from me. It's the perfect book for a day out at the pool this summer.

I had some issues getting into the story. Surprisingly, I really liked the ending.

Switch and Bait's protagonist is a young woman by the name of Blanche. She works in a bookstore but as a side job, she helps people find a good date in the world of online dating.

She has become a success as a matchmaker ever since her earlier years at college. Now, she does it for a commission. She takes female clients only. As per the name of the novel, Blanche pretends to be the ladies and corresponds with the men they are matched with. She creates a good rapport with the men. She banters with them and she makes them like her. When it's time to meet them in person, the real client is the one who shows up for the date and the rest is history.

Her most recent client, Ansley has hired Blanche to help her. She's accident prone and every time she has tried to date, an accident occurs. Blanche is sure she can help her until the person's profile Ansley likes is none other than Henry.

Blanche and Henry had one sexy encounter a few years back. Regrettably, their time together was cut short due to a miscommunication. Blanche has tried to avoid him as much as possible. They are two different but yet she can't seem to forget him. Maybe letting Ansley date him will be a good thing after all. Sadly, her heart doesn't agree with her decision.

Fun and light is the best way for me to describe Switch and Bait. Like I said earlier, I really enjoyed the ending. Henry was swoony and I had no idea why Blanche took so long to take the plunge.

Cliffhanger: No

SWITCH and Bait Ricki Schultz is the story of Blanche Carter and her matching making site. Blanche has a way with finding other people mates even back in College she was known as the Love DR. Now she is running her business helping clients find there possibly happy ending. But the one things she does do her self is relationships so when a name pops up of someone she knows she goes forward with setting him up while trying to keep her feelings in the background.
Different type of story then what I usually read, but overall a good story.

This is incredible! I get so giddy when I find a new author. Switch and Bait was a one sit read for me and now I want more! It's been a few days since I've finished and my mind keeps creeping back into the world of Blanche Carter. A fun yet captivation character with a deliciously fun outlook on dating in the digital word.

Ah... it has been out for a bit so I am going to keep this short and sweet, as well as spoiler free.
One of my top reads for 2018 thus far. I needed an injection of humor and this was it.

Switch and Bait is one of those stories that you can just read in one sitting which is what I did. It wasn't a perfect love story but it had plenty of steam, humour and heart. Definitely an enjoyable second chance romance.

Given the title there wasn't as much of a switch and bait situations as I would've thought. Except with the main storyline we only get a few lines of the other dating accounts Blanche handled. They were amusing but I think it would've been even more interesting to see some depths to them. I loved that Blanche had a set of rules for herself. The online world can get crazy so some guidelines definitely didn't hurt. Even if she had troubles keeping to them after a certain past comes back into her life ;)

I'm a big fan of the intense attraction between Blanche and Henry. They had such chemistry. The flashback scenes were delicious. I kind of wished we'd gotten more of them in the past though. I guess those might have been all there was? Either way the two of them totally lit up the pages. The unspoken sexual frustration in their bickering, the undercurrent of longing in their looks, the explosive heat when they were together, ugh, so good!!

Switch and Bait was hot and fun. If you're a romance lover and am looking for a good time, this book is it. Also! Make sure you read the dedication page. I had a good laugh when I first read it :P

Cute story but something about the writing style was throwing me off. Some scenes came off as choppy and rough (in terms of transitions or scene changes). Nothing big or horrible, but reading wasn’t as smooth or easy as I would’ve liked.

I really wanted to like this book but the writing threw me off a bit and the added personalities of some characters. Maybe I'll go back to it in the future or maybe not. But give it a try even though it's not for me

This was the perfect way to start my summer! This book was so fun and charming that I read it all in one sitting. I seriously loved Blanche and all the drama that came with her.

Blanche manages a book shop in D.C. but in order to help pay the bills she also helps women get online dates. She considers herself a guru of online dating and offers to make dating profiles and online chat with men in order to get these women a date! However, her own dating life is basically nonexistent--through her own choosing!

Blanche and Henry have known each other for ages, but their political differences and poor timing have left them at odds. When one of Blanche's clients, Ansley, match with him online things start to get interesting!

This book is told entirely from Blanche's point of view so we get a lot of insight into her funny and sarcastic demeanor. I really loved Henry and wish we got to see even more of him in the story! Even though this was a romance, I think my favorite parts of the book were when Blanche and Ansley were causing a ruckus together!! They were both so funny and cute! Ansley is a complete disaster when it comes to her clumsyness and it was so endearing! I hope she gets her own book!

This book was very funny and is the perfect light read to get your summer going!

My ARC copy of the book was provided in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.

AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall 4 Narration 4 Story 4

Blanche spent much of her college years being known as the Love Guru in her sorority, for her ability with matchmaking, even though she’s never managed to parlay those talents into a relationship of her own. Now out of school, she’s managing a bookshop a dating site that caters to the women of Washington, D.C., helping them to tweak their profiles to meet a man. She also handles those ‘pesky’ introductions and screenings, fending off inappropriate responses, photos and other such nonsense. Her business is well-regarded, and the quick interactions with men and women are clever and often funny. Until Blanche sees a familiar name cross her desk – her old crush, Henry.

Determined to find him a match and ignore her own feelings, Blanche is working to find Henry a match, but her own memories and lingering feelings don’t allow her to stop reviewing their past. On different ends of the political spectrum their interactions were full of snark, bickering and loaded with sexual tension. But, part of her job is to see her client’s find their happy endings, and while she’s flirting and messaging back and forth with Henry, she’s also desperately trying to convince herself that her own feelings are dormant, and despite her facility with matching others, she’s not worth the men who cross her desk. Alternatingly funny, poignant and the occasional moments of “I know this won’t end well”, the story is a perfect light-bite, a read in one sitting or listen on the road, book that will leave you smiling.

Narration for this story is provided by Ava Erickson, who perfectly captured Blanche and her voice. Since this is all from Blanche’s point of view, while other characters appear, it isn’t a story full of character voices that would demand a series of specific voices to fit each new appearance, yet Erickson did manage to include some variation to distinguish new arrivals. A bit careful in the performance, her flow does take some time to get used to: there’s a tendency to include slightly awkward pauses, that once acclimated lessen in significance. A clever story with plenty of clear description, a sense of the actual person that is Blanche and her own interior monologue that is far more interesting than the blurb would lead you to believe.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Thank you HBG Canada for sending me Switch and Bait

This book has a Matchmaker's Playbook vibe but instead of 2 dudes running a company, it's just one woman.

Blanche is a really interesting character. She helps her clients find love while not believing in it herself. A huge majority of her jobs are successful but when one of her clients gets matched with someone she has a past with, things get rather awkward. It's not even just a random hook up. It's her best friends brother-in-law so they constantly run into each other. The sexual tension is so thick every time they are in the same room.

The set of rules Blanche set up for herself are constantly broken and it shows how much she grows throughout the novel. Because honestly, she starts off super closed-minded and it's kind of annoying.

In all honesty, I enjoyed this book. Maybe there was a little too much political talk and I'm really not into that. That's the main reason why I rated it 4 stars instead of 5. Politics just really aren't for me lol.

Switch and Bait comes out in less than a week so make sure to pick it up! :)

I enjoyed the author's debut novel very much and her sophomore effort did not disappoint. All of the characters are well-developed and her protagonist has a balance of wit and humility that I find endearing. This is a great read for the airplane, beach, or just a lazy afternoon. There are lots of LOL moments and the end will leave you with a warm heart. I look forward to whatever Ms. Schultz has in the works for book three!

#FirstLine ~ The girl sits.

Funny and smart, this book was a great summer read. I needed something that would make me laugh and be a fun read...this was the perfect book. I laughed out loud several times and buzzed through the book. It was so insightful and well written with a main character I adored because she was funny and sarcastic and really authentic. I think many readers will really relate to the struggles captured in the book and will appreciate the delivery of those struggles because they are not sugar coated!

Definitely straddles the line of being women's fiction with a romantic element. I wanted more of a second chance at love story, one of my favorite tropes.
Dialogue was fun and fast paced.
Story arc was good, but fell short of my expectations for the romance.

If you’re a fan of modern romantic comedies that burn up the page AND leave you laughing out loud, SWITCH AND BAIT by Ricki Schultz is for you! Blanche (a book seller / matchmaker) takes on the challenges of playing Cyrano De Bergerac for dating-challenged Ansley, but when Ansley swipes right on Henry – one of Blanche’s old flames – things quickly grow complicated. Add a Justin Trudeau lookalike in the mix, and you have the recipe for a fantastic Rom Com. You will laugh (and cringe) as Blanche figures out her own happily-ever-after. Ms. Schultz’s quirky characters are full of life, and I found myself grinning as I followed Blanche, Ansley, Henry and Cliff (who will forever be Trudeau in my mind) on a bevy of (mis)adventures! I laughed out loud many, MANY times! SWITCH AND BAIT has an awesome BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY feel to it that makes it a must-read! Five enthusiastic stars!

I haven't read in a long while before picking this book up. I was looking for something cheesy, breezy and romantic to read, and this book was almost everything I'd hoped it was. Sure, it had a fair few flaws, but I enjoyed the book's occasional sentimental undertones, and reflective moments, which was already more than I expected this book to dish out.

First and foremost, the writing was easy to follow, without much complex language, however, at some points, I found that there were choppy scene cuts, or sentence structures that I had to re-read a few times to fully grasp what exactly was happening. Additionally, I felt that there was a tad too many times where names of people, were used to aid in description, and maybe its just me, but I felt like I was hitting Google up, a lot.

Next, was the plot itself. The story wasn't quite as I expected, considering the book's blurb quite a bit on the main character being a modern matchmaker. Hence, I did expect a more extensive display of her matchmaking abilities, however it was just a minor issue I griped with. Another issue I had though, was the supposed political clashes and how it was downplayed as easily as it was introduced as a significant plot point. Towards the end of the book, the seemingly serious issue had faded to barely anything. One more slight problem, was how a certain stand-in boyfriend was so quickly dealt with and thrown out of the plot - I'd be lying if I said Blanche's feelings jumping from platonic to 'kinda in love' in a matter of a few days didn't give me whiplash.

Lastly? Blanche drinks way too much.

Onto the characters, whom I liked quite a bit.

Blanche was more than a little different from many protagonists I've encountered in my days of reading. She's impulsive, lacks self-control, is very self-aware, but for some reason, I still like her. I loved how the author managed to somehow create this connection between Blanche and the reader (me) with her painfully brutal declarations of assholery and her mini monologues. These little interjections made Blanche an extremely believable and human character.

For our main male lead, suffice to say, I was pretty smitten by his dreaminess. I appreciated the explanation for his actions at the beginning of the book, which cleared up some misunderstandings, for both Blanche and me. However, I felt that even at the end of the book, I didn't know much about this guy. His sole purpose in the book seemed to hinge on being attractive, caring and thoughtful, the perfect guy for blind-ol Blanche. Why is this a problem? Because I found it hard to connect with him, he seemed mostly distant due to the short encounters with Blanche stingily scattered through the book. We don't know much about him at all honestly. This affected the romance prospect of this book more than I would have liked.

Regarding the other characters in the book, in order to avoid spoiling too much of the book, let's just say a little more development on their parts would have been lovely too. But on this point, I do realise that this book isn't trying to be a deep, soul-shattering book, but maybe a slight more elaboration on the many characters, would have done the book good in shelling out the story world.

Overall the book did achieve it's goal of being a romantic chick-lit novel, with a tinges of adult themes and some thought provoking lines, dusted with some obvious issues, but hey,

I still enjoyed it.

Blanche Carter has always had a knack for helping others make a love connection, she enjoyed doing it so much that she decided to try her hand at making a living off of it, and so far it has been quite profitable. It brings her so much joy to pair people up and watch the fireworks happen, but with all her experience she has yet to create her own fireworks with someone, which really isn't that concerning to her since she swore off relationships a while ago. She goes above and beyond for her clients, even if it means it means being a little traumatized by the occasional photo of someone sans their unmentionables, the way she looks at it, it's all part of the job. But when she is sifting through male dates options for a new client and runs across a unforgettable man from her own list of past suitors, she has a hard time convincing herself that she is over him. And then before she realizes the gravity of her actions she begins to flirt with him via messaging... full well knowing this situation isn't going to end well for all involved!

Switch and Bait is a comical little page-turner that is sure to have readers giggling throughout... Blanche is a hoot! This first time read left me dazzled, a mere two pages in and I found myself pulled right into Blanche's world and completely at her mercy, the feisty matchmaker puts on one heck of a show!! She was brutally honest, determined, sarcastic, and I had a delightful time watching her surrender to her own rules and finally make a love connection of her own. If you are looking for a light and heartfelt read to settle down with this summer I highly suggest you pick this one up, Ms. Schultz's well crafted story line and endearing characters are sure to treat you to a good time!!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

Not bad. It's a fun, Cyrano de Bergerac-style take on online dating. I liked the witty banter between the hero and heroine (pretending to be her client Ansley) over the dating app, and I love the hilarious subplot about Ansley's clumsiness. As a museum nerd, I particularly like how Ansley's claim to fame is that she got banned from the Smithsonian for knocking over a stegosaurus display. (Not sure how possible that actually is, but I LOL'd.)

But the overall execution was just okay. Not sure what it is, but I never quite connected emotionally to the hero and heroine's romance, and I was more invested in Ansley's love life than the heroine's. I mostly it's that the conflict between the hero and heroine was never super fleshed out -- he's a Republican and she refuses to date a conservative man, but they never really debate politics; he overhears her slagging him as good for just a one night stand (which, fair, is a reason not to like her), but they never quite confront that; she was heartbroken by a bad romance but that experience was barely mentioned beyond being the reason for her rules of dating.

You know this book is right up my alley, because a few years ago my best friend and I talked about starting a service to help people with online dating. When my former roommate was online dating, I used to scroll through her matches for her to pre-screen. It was way more fun than actually looking for people to go out with. In fact, based on my history I'm both surprised and a bit jealous that I didn't think to write this book first. It doesn't matter though, because this book was just perfection and I loved it. The book is so well done, it makes me want to be a better writer.

Blanche is utterly relatable as the woman who doesn't date but secretly still wants to find someone. Ansley is a great damsel in distress who needs Blanche to save her. Henry is swoon-worthy. Isla, Cliff, and Gordon help round out an interesting cast of characters. In some ways, Blanche is her own worst enemy, but she's not so over-the-top that I got frustrated reading about her problems. Her dilemmas ring true, which is one of my favorite things about the book.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an ARC. I adore this book and will read it over and over.

This book was very odd in some ways. Something would happen in regular time and then another section would begin where the heroine was suddenly talking to someone several years in the past with no notice—no “seven years earlier” or something like that to let you know where and when you were.

Something else weird is that when the heroine tries to have a conversation about the original argument, the hero gets upset and says she’s basically trying to dredge up old crap. Honestly, I thought we were about to get a grovel from her which would have been good because you *know* that shit is going to come up in the future if they don’t deal with it now.

I also didn’t feel like the blurb was a good indicator of the actual story—I kept thinking I was reading something different.

One more thing/complaint: the heroine was a smoker and, as a former smoker, all I could think when she was kissing a non-smoker was how gross that is.

Spoiler ahead:

This book will probably upset many romance readers with the way the two MCs got together at the start and then had other relationships (including sex) with other people before getting back together. This also had the unfortunate result of them not being together on page as much as you’d want in a romance, for the most part.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. When I read the premise for Switch and Bait  I was immediately hooked, it's about a woman who runs other women's online dating profiles to help them find dates. While helping a client, she finds out that the woman matches with a guy she used to have a thing with, and is conflicted about what to do.

What I enjoyed about this novel was the writing style and the setting. Shultz has a writing style that is super easy and quick to read, but there was something about it that also kept the characters distant. I also enjoyed the setting of the novel. It takes place in D.C. and talks a bit about dating people with different political views than our own.

Henry and Blanche have an interesting relationship. There's def some chemistry there, but their political views and timing are keeping them apart. Overall I didn't feel the romance very much. Even though I enjoyed the writing style, there was something about the story that distanced me from the characters, so I didn't care about them as much as I wanted to and I wasn't super invested in their relationship.

My biggest pet peeve in the story is that Blanche smokes cigarettes. It's only a small part of the story, but it's continuously mentioned throughout. Smoking is one thing I can't get over, and I felt like the book made it add to her "cool" personality.

Before diving into this novel, I knew I was going to enjoy it because of the fake dating trope. April is going home for a family reunion, but doesn't want to deal with her family trying to set her up with anyone, so she hires Theo to be her fake boyfriend for the weekend.

Overall this was a funny, light hearted book. I enjoyed the characters, their chemistry seemed believable, and the speed of their relationship also seemed believable. I loved the setting of the book, at April's family reunion, where there's plenty of family stuff going on.

I definitely think the first half of the book was way better than the second half. There were some things that happened that felt really unbelievable, and would not have occurred with two people that only knew each other for two or three days. Because of the events that did not fit in with the rest of the story, I had to lower my rating.

Have you read either of these books? What did you think of the books? This review was originally posted on Latte Nights Reviews.

You guys!! Switch and Bait was a hilarious and fun novel. Blanche was sassy and smart and did not hold back. I found her and Henry to be refreshingly honest and their chemistry so sexy. I could not get enough!! It is the perfect Summer beach read - light and delicious!

I found both Blanche and Henry to be sexy and honest and just great together. Their banter was delicious and the back and forth was such a delight. I loved that the author was able to seamlessly jump into their flashback scenes providing their history without having it drag on. The extended cast of characters were amazing ( hello Gordon!!) and I look forward to more from this author in the future.

This is the perfect beach read! I LOVED it!

Blanche is a book store manager (hello I want her job!) and on the side she is a matchmaker to those that are hopeless and can't find a date.

She did it for her sorority sisters back in the day for free, why not make some cash this time around. :)

She basically logs on to dating sites, sets up profiles for her clients, find the "perfect" matches and converse with them all while setting up dates for her clients to go on! She will even be at the date in hiding, just in case anything goes wrong. Talk about customer service!

While she is helping Ansley find her man, he ex Henry swipes for her. What is a girl to do?

Will this end well for all parties involved?

This was a fun and entertaining read although very different from what I normally read. It was like reading a W movie, predictable but still good :) I never read her first book so have no comparison in those regards.

Blanche manages a book store but also has a side job; she will help you get a date via online dating apps. She will spruce up your profile, find matches and start conversations with potential mates. Then you go on dates with those she believes are good matches. She meets an attractive but accident prone blonde that needs her help but everything gets a bit awkward when this new client matches with Blanche's ex. A few laughs, a bit of smut, very predictable; but overall a fun read.

didn’t like

- the fmc was annoying as hell - her actions made zero sense. She was selfish and that didn’t change for most of the book! I did DNF the book pretty late so around 90% and by that point she was still being very selfish and self-obsessed.
- the sex scene with OM where way more descriptive than the one with the mmc
- there were barely any interactions between the fmc and mmc - we rarely see them together
- her reasons for not wanting to be with the mmc was basically bc she doesn’t believe in love bc of her parents divorce (that’s a almost 30 year old woman - you would think she could get over it) but than turns around the starts dating OM seriously …. Like wth that made zero sense

I loved this book! It’s a very quick read. Some of the words used were redundant, but it didn’t bug me too much. There are some explicit sexual scenes and usage of the “F” word, so if you don’t like that in your books I wouldn’t recommend it. The sex scenes are about a page worth so you could skip them as well. It’s definitely geared toward Millennials...there are lots of references about social media sites and dating sites that some older folks may not understand or find annoying. But, the plot is engaging as well as the characters. In fact at times, it reminded me of an adult version of pride and prejudice.

This was my first time reading a book by this author. After reading the first chapter of this book I was hooked. The title, book cover and saying “We switch. I bait. Let me help you snag a date.” Intrigued me.

I really enjoyed reading this story from beginning to end. I loved the characters. Blanche, Henry, Gordon, Ansley, Isla and Graham. My least favorite character is Cliff.
The romantic/comedic banter between characters was fun and the family type friendships were a little emotional at times, and overall the story was a wonderful fun summer read.
