The Legacy

Rate this book
Harry Black has a curse he doesn’t understand, or could it be a gift he can’t escape? He’s the last heir of a dying clan, but there’s a problem. To inherit, he must fulfill the only stipulation in the will—accept the Black family Legacy. After seven weeks of the same nightmare, Harry is desperate to see a psychologist to be “cured.” But instead of help at the hands of Dr. Virginia Rankin, Harry falls headlong into the legacy’s grip when he experiences an ecstatic utterance and inexplicably reveals information to her that he couldn’t possibly know.

Shocked that this stranger has knowledge of her family’s dark secret, Ginny makes a frantic call to her brother. The call makes the Minority Whip of the US Senate late for a meeting at a world economic summit in DC, delaying him long enough to avoid a terrorist bombing that kills two other senators and dozens more innocent people. By saving the life of Dr. Rankin’s famous brother, Harry has also sealed his own fate. Wanted or not, the Legacy has finally come to him…

Excellent reading material that kept me awake deep into the night. I enjoyed reading every single page. The story was well plotted, it has nice flow and the characters are wonderfully built. I haven't read paranormal for some time and I had nice time with it. I can't wait to read the next book by this author.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, BooksGoSocial, and the author via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Harry Black has spent his entire childhood being brainwashed by his eccentric Grandmother, Agnes. His whole life he has had horror stories of the Black Legacy thrown at him with no regard for his feelings, or what he wants for his own life. As Agnes edges closer and closer to death, harry is angered to find out that his inheritance will be delayed, he will not receive a single thing entitled to him until such time as he accept the legacy. As Harry believes it to be nothing but stories and the ramblings of an old woman, he doesn't understand how he is ever supposed to receive what is rightfully his. Until he realises that the recurring nightmare he's been having is more than just a nightmare. After witnessing an unexplainable situation, he starts to wonder whether all the stories Agnes told him really ARE just stories. What follows is a man unsure of his role in a war that has been raging for centuries, and the big bad that he believed to be nothing but myth turning it's sights onto the American Government in a bid to further their plans. Will Harry be able to rise to the challenge before him? Will he finally accept his legacy?

The concept of this story was very intriguing. A man who has no idea what he really comes from, believing it all to be nothing but childish stories and the end of life ramblings of his dying Grandmother, having his mind changed through out of this world situations that he realises he has no control over. The supernatural elements of this story were well thought out and connect flawlessly, the small twists and turns were executed brilliantly and I applaud Brown for this.

The characters were great. I especially liked Agnes and Boone, I loved their involvement in the overall story and that ending was bittersweet. Boone was probably my favourite character if I'm honest. Harry was likable and I feel that he portrayed the skeptic turned believer very well. It annoys me in stories when these absolutely fantastical things are happening, the main character is a skeptic, and then is suddenly turned into a complete believer with no questions. This isn't how it happens with Harry, he fights it until he's blue in the face before being confronted with irrefutable evidence to the contrary, making his transition believable.

I loved the addition of the Grigori, I thought they were an awesome aspect of the story as well as the safe haven that is Black Manor. One thing this author does well, is sow the seeds of doubt with certain characters. I actually felt how Harry must have, I didn't know who to trust, I didn't know if I could actually trust anyone, and that is a mark of a great writer. Being able to instill the reader with the feelings of the characters.

I felt the beginning third of the book was very slow. I understand that there was a lot of information needed to be able to understand what was going on, but I found the focus on the political aspect to be a bit boring. Yes, I'm aware that this was basically the whole purpose of the bad guys in this story, getting a political hold on the US, but I felt that maybe there was too much time given to this portion of the story? I'm not too sure. It just dragged for me. Once things started happening the pacing picked up considerably. This only took me four days to read, but it felt like it took so much longer. I almost considered DNFing this story but decided to stick with it as I hate not finishing books, especially those that I requested for reviewing purposes. I'm glad that I stuck with it, but the story overall didn't have that WOW factor that I look for in books. It was an entertaining enough story, the characters were likable, it was well written and thought out, it just came out as a mediocre read for me.

A Priore Sensum

The Legacy by S. P. Brown, is the story of Joey Harry Black, the sole surviving blood heir to the Black Legacy. The Legacy is an innocuous blend of abilities whose purpose is to protect the World from the powers of sorcery. In the beginning, Harry refuses to acknowledge the existence of any form of supernatural person. He simply wants to take charge of the family fortune and live his life in a sane manner just like any other 21st Century millennial. These facts are not spoilers as the author goes out of his way to explain Harry’s mindset during the first Chapters.

Unfortunately for Harry, his life is The Legacy, whether he agrees or not.

S. P. Brown appears comfortable writing about the methods and effects of sorcery, both to its victims and practitioners. The Mages have no qualms about using their magical powers and victimize all who are not part of their group. Harry’s ‘Legacy’ abilities are not magical. They are more ESP with the hint of a quasi-religious foundation. I leave it to the readers to form their own opinions about the origin of the Grigori, a fun group of Harry Helpers.

The narrative flows well even with a slow start. I urge readers to stick with the story through the first two chapters after which things get revved. The motives and allegiance of every single character in the book are subject to question. There were few grammatical errors which did not detract from the book. I was comfortable with the writing style even though there were, for example, several sentences which ended with the word ‘to’. The ending leaves no doubt a sequel is to follow.

I rate the book, The Legacy, as an overall 4 out of 5.

I give this book 5 stars because it was a fun read. Well-plotted, and suspenseful. I don’t normally read paranormal thrillers, but this one kept my interest all the way through. Mystery and surprises throughout kept me flipping pages. It is fast-paced and had me guessing ‘til the very end. I highly recommend this book.

Harry Black is haunted by nightmares that lead him to question and possibly rethink the unimaginable Legacy that his grandmother always warned him about. He thinks she is crazy for believing in it. For years it has been nothing but a bunch of crazy stories and legendary hocus pocus, but now, it’s happening, and he can’t deny it any longer, no matter how unrealistic it is.

He seeks the help of a psychologist to help him with the nightmares, and in listening to Harry, she watches him become enthralled in the Legacy. In its clutches, Harry speaks about something he possibly could not know. It’s a dark family secret that involves Dr. Rankin’s brother. In a panic, she contacts her brother, making him late to a meeting, also saving his life. A terrorist bombing takes the lives of two senators at this meeting in Washington, DC at the time of the call.

Before Harry has the chance to learn more about the Legacy, his grandmother passes. He and Ginny are left alone to research the Legacy to unravel it’s mysteries and unfathomable hold on Harry.

S. P. Brown’s spell-binding tale, The Legacy, weaves together inexplicable supernatural elements with extraordinary demands of family loyalty. Protagonist Harry Black, raised by an ‘insane’ grandmother, always dismissed her convoluted stories of generations-old struggles against destructive powers, until she dies and the ancient battle falls to him, the end-of-the line heir. Pitted against monsters and humans-turned-murderers Harry, hereto for an ordinary, educated professional, accepts the challenge to defend the family legacy, its estate, and the people he loves. Besides being a riveting story, Brown has created an otherworldly experience that transports the reader between co-existent universes with the blink of an eye. Devotees of the supernatural and newcomers to the genre alike will find The Legacy delightfully original, fast paced, and loaded with unexpected twists and turns. Plan to be up half the night, unable to stop reading, but keep the lights on.

THE LEGACY by S.P. Brown is a riveting page-turner that lovers of Political Thrillers, Paranormal and Supernatural genres will not want to miss. The plot is completely unique and intriguing with a cast of interesting, relatable characters. Full of tension, plot twists and surprises, this novel will enthrall you and keep you up late at night.

This is the fourth book I have read by this talented, versatile author, but it is certain not to be the last. S.P. Brown does not disappoint, and I look forward to discovering what will flow from his creative mind next. Brown has become one of those authors I feel that I can count on to deliver a great, quality novel regardless of which genre he chooses to write

I highly recommend S.P. Brown’s debut novel, THE LEGACY.

The Legacy was certainly a roller coaster of a book, but definitely in a good way. At first glance, this might seem like a book with a somewhat odd plot due to the paranormal thriller aspect being mixed in with a political subplot but Brown weaves everything together very nicely. It reminded me a bit of something James Patterson might write and for being a debut book, it certainly didn't feel like it.

I enjoyed following along with Harry and Ginny on their journey and I found all of the characters to be well rounded. I very much look forward to reading this author's other books. If you like paranormal or thriller books, you really don't want to miss out on this read!

A curse—or a legacy—is attached to the huge sums of money Harry Black inherits on his grandmother’s passing and the unbelievable becomes the norm when he is called on to fight evil.
What I most enjoyed about this novel was watching this young man’s transformation as he grows as a person and realizes saving others is more important than himself or his inheritance.
If you like a blend of paranormal and thriller, give this one a go.

This was a promising book until the end, when I discovered it was only a prequel. That was annoying. I don't always mind reading prequels, but I do when it's unexpected.

That being said, it is a great premise for what I hope will be a full story with real conclusions. The author is a good writer.

The first novel of author Stan P Brown called The Legacy takes place near Jackson, Mississippi. Harry Black is the last living heir of Clan Black, who abandoned England over a century ago to settle in Mississippi. Agnes Black, Harry’s wealthy, eccentric grandmother is the matriarch of Clan Black and she used her wealth to help get Bill Rankin, the senior senator from Mississippi, elected. Agnes is near the end of her life and leaves the entire Black fortune to Harry with the stipulation that Harry accept the ancient legacy of Clan Black and become a protector against evil.

For the last several weeks Harry has been having horrific nightmares in which he hears a screaming woman being tortured by a group weird pagan people in a dense forest. At a banquet for Senator Bill Rankin, Harry talks to Bill’s sister Dr. Ginny Rankin, a psychologist, about his grandmother’s health and if he will continue to support the Senator after his ailing grandmother is gone.

Agnes Black dies and Harry is still tormented by his nightmares. He goes to see Dr. Rankin and tells her about the debilitating nightmares and from nowhere tells her a deep and dark secret about her brother. A secret that he could not have possibly known. Ginny tells her brother and he decides to stay in Jackson, instead of returning to Washington DC where an economic summit is taking place. A terrorist attack hits the economic summit killing several key Senators, but not Bill Rankin. Harry has now accepted the Black legacy and soon faces the forces of evil that are after him.

The novel is fast paced and keeps one’s attention into the night. A commendable first novel.

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for the ARC.

I loved the concept of this when I first read the synopsis and requested it on Netgalley. This did not let me down. I did read this back in 20018 and forgot to post my review.

It was a dark paranormal with lots of thrilling aspects in the book. It would love to read again but the only thing about rereads is that you already know what is going to happen so you don't hold your breath because you already know. The fun part of a mystery is not knowing until the end.
