FIVE WRITERS FROM SCOTLAND
FIVE WRITERS FROM THE AMERICAS
ONE JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

Writing on themes as diverse as the post-Trump landscape, political division, perceptions, and time, this book illustrates the critical role that writers play in this world, and highlights the perceptual criss-crossing that connects us across borders - both physical and metaphorical.

I received this book for free while attending associated events at the 2017 Edinburgh International Book Festival. It was an unexpected treat to get to keep the fruits of all the writers' labors, especially since I was only able to go to two of the six or so total events, and enjoyed having more time to read and think about the many aspects of this unusual creative collaboration.

The different writers definitely present with diverse voices, styles, and approaches to the central theme. Naturally, there were some works that resonated with me more than others, but I appreciated the book as a whole. My only criticism really is that the last chapter (by Mariana Enriquez) appears in its original Spanish, but with only a fraction of it translated into English (the main language of the festival and probably most people receiving the free book). I was pleasantly surprised that my own rusty Spanish was actually still good enough to (slowly) read that chapter as it is printed, and also still good enough to see that the writer uses language very beautifully and effectively - all the more reason for me to be disappointed in the incomplete (and by my reckoning, slightly inferior) translation - seems a bit of an indignity and doesn't give this work equal standing with the other chapters.

Nevertheless, I have been inspired to check out further works by several of the authors, and also to rethink what I might achieve (even if just for myself) by exploring new ways of writing about travel both near and far.

Self indulgent, with little in the way of meaningful insights
