Nichts Ernstes

Rate this book

**3.5 stars**

I'm SO conflicted on this story! Everything from the audio narration to the plot is just pulling me in two different directions! I settled on 3.5 stars, but there were parts that I loved and parts that I didn't care for.

I'll start with the narration, which tends to make or break audiobooks for me. I should have disliked this narrator (Michael Pauley). First of all, he is an American dude reading for characters who are clearly British, which is WEIRD! I was really puzzled by the narrator choice because the delivery of certain lines just sounded off with an American accent. Also, he has one voice, ONE, and he uses it for everyone, male or female. Finally, during the sex scenes, as the action picks up, so does the speed of his voice. Picture a sportscaster or an auctioneer getting more and more excited as things start getting heated. It was... odd. But, crazily enough, I enjoyed Michael Pauley! I think it is just that his voice is so sexy sounding... or maybe it was his acting skills. Either way, I was NOT displeased by the narration, though it was not my usual flavor.

In terms of the book, I was expecting to LOVE it. Gay first-timers are my thang, and so I was expecting to drool all over this one. And while the sex scenes were REALLY hot, and I liked the chemistry between the two men, nothing really happens during the story. I mean, NOTHING. It is light and low drama, but the whole plot centers around communication issues. It is easy, enjoyable reading, but not I-want-to-die-this-is-so-good amazing.

Overall, I'd recommend this for people looking for a short, sexy listen that features lot of sexual exploration and not a whole lot of plot.

Ahhhhh…this book was sweet.

Nothing Serious is exactly that…it is an easy story of two men meeting under fortuitous circumstances and timing and falling in love. The story won’t shake you to your core. It’s not one of those shout-it-from-the-rooftops-I-love-it-so reads.

What it is, quite simply, is M/M 101…done well. Friends-with-benefits to lovers, gay sex virgin, a glossary of all the gay sex basics (you top then I’ll top, 69, rimming, finger f’ing, frotting, shower time…but none of it over-the-top dirty, yet not clinical either), and 2 really endearing characters.

This could very easily have gone the route of textbook basics. But what Jay Northcote, in her first effort, does well, is keeps the reader engaged with the building of the relationship between Jaime and Mark. Sweet, attractive, funny, kind, loyal…they’re easy to like.

This book has zero angst, a few warm sex scenes, and <200 pages of easy reading.

A recommended in-betweener book when you need a break and something that doesn’t require much investment. Perfectly fine read, if not entirely memorable, but a good go-to when in ‘that’ mood.

…and the cover is hot. (shades of an untatted Adam Levine)

3.5 Stars!

Perfectly sweet.
Perfectly sexy.

This was a quick read...I'd really call it more of a novella. But it was a really sweet and sexy story.

Mark has just come out to his long-time girlfriend. He's been in the closet pretty much his whole life.

He's pretty much a virgin when it comes to being gay. Mark is moving out of his shared house in to a new apartment of his own when he meets Jamie. Jamie is helping out with his brother's moving company.

A spilled box reveals some gay porn, magazines and butt plugs.

Mark kind of spills his story and Jamie does what any self-respecting guy would do....he offers to be his Mark's gay guinea pig. Mark is free to use his body to explore being with a man.

So what starts out as nothing serious turns in to more. Both Mark and Jamie start to develop real feelings for each other. But both are afraid to admit it to each other for fear that the other doesn't feel the same way.

This one was a bit predictable. But for being a novella, I thought it was pretty good. Had plenty of steam. No manufactured drama and angst. A quick, entertaining read.

This was easy, light, and sexy, with zero angst and no convoluted plot besides the two MCs getting to know one another.

Mark meets Jamie when Mark moves out of the house he shares with his long-time girlfriend to his own flat. Mark's gay, so there's no use pretending he can make it work with Rachel. Mark comes to this realization before the book starts, and he is out and not conflicted over it, just feels bad that he's hurting Rachel. Jamie is one of the moving guys, and Mark is immediately in lust with the tall, muscular man.

Jamie suggests that he introduce Mark to the joys of gay sex (this sounds kind of creepy but was done with teasing and humor). The guys start hanging out, and the relationship becomes more than physical, but both Jamie and Mark are worried their feelings aren't reciprocated. They are bloody idiots about it, because it's so obvious to everyone else that they're mad for each other.

But...finally...revelation! applause! gasp!...they TALK about it. TALK, people. They don't run and hide or break up or make each other jealous or create angst and drama. Nope, they have a conversation, and get it together. Amazing how that works.

Jamie, who was 22 to Mark's 29, was a fabulous teacher and a caring companion (loved the scenes where he takes care of Mark when Mark had a cold). He's a little insecure about his dyslexia, but Mark treats him with total respect. Jamie's family was wonderful and completely accepting (no homophobia in this book); I loved his mum, and his teenage sister was hilarious. I also liked that Mark remains friends with his ex Rachel (but not like BFFs, just friendly, another thing that was realistic to me), and that Rachel is a nice person who understands why Mark had to move on. She's not some stark, raving bitch, which was really refreshing. Jamie has a sort of ex too, a guy he plays football with still, and again, Josh is a cool guy; he even pesters Jamie about his feelings for Mark and encourages him to talk to Mark already.

Even though this book was sweet, it was super steamy; the sex scenes were appropriate to the story, because after all, Mark is exploring, and Jamie is more than happy to be of service.

Insert totally gratuitous gif here:

Overall, this was lovely and well written; bonus points for the English setting with football, Britishisms, pubs, and tea. Cheers!

Aptly chosen title. This is sweet and easy, light and sexy and nothing serious.
Mark has finally at almost 30 decided to come out, splitting from his girlfriend of 9 years ( thankfully, she's a nice ex, no evil females in this book) and while moving out finds Jamie.
Jamie not only helps Mark move out, but move on and what starts out as friends with benefits turns into more.
There is no conflict, no angst, no stress. Just two nice guys, falling into bed and then falling into love.
Perfect light 'snack' read for in between heavier, darker reads or like me, in between other light reads. :)

On a very unimportant side note, Jamie suffers from dyslexia and I always appreciate when those kind of issues are woven into a story. It's far more common than you'd think and I like seeing it represented in stories.

Another "Nothing" book

Perfectly sweet and Perfectly sexy.

This was a quick read and really sweet and sexy story. So what starts out as nothing serious turns in to more.

There's plenty of steam, no drama and no angst. A quick and entertaining read.
I adore those "snack" books I can squeezes in between of my hot an heavy angsty "main course" ones I love.

This may come as a surprise but I am an emotional reader. Shh…don’t let that get out, but I am. I pick books based on emotions I am feeling and then feed off the emotions from the book and then start all over again. I am a self-proclaimed angst whore even though I know what those type of books do to me. Why am I saying all of this? Because after books like that, you need a book to remind you again that life isn’t always so heavy. That sometimes there are stories that open up, let you in and give you a warm hug with an occasional inappropriate groping that reminds you why you love to read about love. Love, pure and simple gooey love that keeps a perma grin on your face from the first to the last page. Le Sigh.

Nothing Serious caught my eye a few months back with that cover. Oh yeah, I judged a book by its cover (have you seen the arms on it and those lips?) and then I read the blurb. A Robertson in a book sealed the deal, it’s my maiden name and I hold a strong affection for it so I was sold on this but with my To Be Read massive pile it got lost in the shuffle. After a particularly angsty read I needed to mend my heart and scrolling through my Nook I saw this cover again and just knew it would be the read my battered heart needed.

Meeting Mark as he is moving out and moving on from his long term relationship with Rachel after he finally comes to accept that he is gay was a great way to start the book. His meeting with Jamie…oh yeah. I would love to meet Mark that way; towel wrapped low around his hips, that pale skin peppered with freckles and that red hair with the curls wet against his head as the water droplets find their way down…oh, sorry. What was I saying? Yes, yes… Mark meets Jamie, a box falls and dispenses Marks fetishes and the boys have a plan. Mark needs to learn the ways of the gay sex and Jamie, big strong strapping blonde Jamie is willing to be the teacher. He is going to be the teacher…give me a minute while I get a song one, side two off Van Halen’s 1984 LP out of my head.
“I haven’t had a chance to test out the theory yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s a sound one.”

“You could test it out on me if you like.”

So, the boys decide to meet with a type of friends with benefits arrangement and Jamie is going to Jedi mind trick the holy fuck out of Mark with all his massive coc…er em knowledge he can pass on in the bedroom. Okay, so yeah they are going to do this and they do and it’s hella hot but at the same time it was so stinking sweet! OMG! This went from sexy to adorable to holy hell I need a drink after that lesson to turning me into a puddle of goo! I loved it. The chemistry between Mark and Jamie was immediate and believable. I loved how different they were and yet they just fit. They had the sweetest moments as their feelings started to develop into more than just what they could share in bed and Jamie really did love that bed.
And yes, I kind of have a date. But it’s nothing serious.

There is very little angst in this story and I adored that. I liked Jamie’s family, his sister was fun. Rachel was a genuine friend after what happened with her and Mark and I really like her taste in wine, the extra money is always worth it dear. Always. Jamie’s story about when he came out just made me love him more and want to crawl into his lap and help him write a paper or feed him because that boy is growing and needs food! Ugh. This was just so so so cute. The football game, so adorable. These two just had me in a puddle of happiness mixed with hot sex that was the perfect combination to cure my broken heart.

Nothing Serious, kinda was just that. There was nothing in it that was too serious for my heart to handle. Sure, the boys have a miscommunication but it was minor and the way it played out was again so cute! I love cute. Cute fuels me, makes me smile and makes me want to tell everyone to read this when they need that story to heal them. I have already quoted it to friends and told them they have to read it. What more could you want from a book but that? Not much, I tell you. Not much. I am going to go Google redheads now so I can totally imagine Mark in that towel again. Sorry, I have no shame and have you seen the arms on that cover? *groans*

Oh and Jay, thank you for the wonderful story of these two boys and letting them mend my heart. I needed them and they were there for me, so thanks.

First off if you've just had a really heavy read with lots of angst and major conflict, then this is a perfect one to slip in as an endearing , wind down, easy read. Cute romance with a friends with benefits theme that won't awe or surprise you at all, but will leave you feeling warm and sated! The chemistry between newly outed Mark and the younger but more experienced Jamie is great and the love scenes are hot but still romantic and sweet. Can't really say a lot more because as the title says there's nothing serious about this at all, yet it still has a charm about it that ( I found ) lifts it above just being ordinary. I liked this a lot. A very nice comfort read.

The general consensus for this story before I picked it up were "sweet', "light", and well, "nothing serious". Which was exactly the reason why I decided to read it, since I was needing something like that.

I think other reviewers have summed up everything perfectly. It was a light and easy read -- no heavy drama. It was pure straight-forward attraction at first sight (the moment Mark laid eyes on this handsome mover) to becoming friends (with benefits) to romance.

I found both men likeable -- Mark was adorable, although he was older than Jamie, but this was basically his first gay-experience, so he was quite eager to learn though at the same time worrying that Jamie couldn't return his feeling. Jamie was cute too -- I liked that he struggled with dyslexia (it showed a couple of times in the way he wrote text) but he was also a fun guy.

So yes, it was nice -- although I must admit that after they decided to be as friends as benefits, I found it more like Gay 101, as Jamie introduced Mark to joy of gay sex (from BJ, fingering, fucking...) and my eyes glazed over since it became slightly repetitive. But if you need things in between heavy novels, without too much of drama, angst, or evil female, this one might be a good option.

Unfortunately, this didn't really work for me. Mark and Jamie didn't have much chemistry and the sex felt robotic and formulaic. The "experiment your gayness on me" plot device didn't succeed in coming across as fun and flirty, but instead it felt mechanical and boring. I found myself easily distracted while reading, and we all know that's never a good thing.

This was just a sweet story about two men meeting and falling for each other. Light on the angst but a lovely slow moving romance. Mark just ended a long term relationship with a woman and is moving to a new town he meets Jamie who works part-time for the moving company. They start seeing each other and the romance progresses to something more than just friends with benefits. I liked the men and the romance here but I'd recommend this one if you're looking for something with little to no conflict.

Nothing Serious is a lovely story about two ordinary guys, with normal jobs and realistic lives.
So refreshing.
just a lovely read, you can identify with there hopes and doubts.
the sex is quite nicely written.
The gay acceptance thing is a tad to rosy, but not an issue.
The family get together/introduction scene is so well done,
not a long book, I could not put it down, got through it in one sitting, but worth while.
If your fed up with gay vampires/werewolves, Billionaires, cowboys and firemen stories,
Perhaps your fed up with getting roped into an ongoing saga of books.
Then this is the one for you.
Ordinary guys just getting on with it. nothing serious.

I did not dislike this. But as a previous reviewer has already said, the book was light, sweet and nothing serious. Easy to read- almost too easy as I got a bit bored and flipped through the pages quickly. No conflict, drama or other plot twists to keep me more engaged and raise the star rating.

I liked this story, mainly because both the main characters were both so nice! The story follows Mark, who finally comes out after many years in a long term relationship, as he is initiated into the joys of gay sex by Jamie, whom he meets when Jamie is the removalist helping him move into his own flat.

The reasons for Mark ending up in a relationship with a woman for so long "I think I just wanted to be what everyone expected me to be.." were relatively simple and his break up with his wife not overdone. It wasn't necessarily a happy break up but neither was it too easy - realistic.

Jamie is younger than Mark and although not overly experienced, takes on the role of providing Mark with the touch he has been craving. Jamie is wonderful with a warm and caring nature and so endearing as he struggles with his dyslexia. His family are also a wonderful addition to the story.

I enjoyed the sweet story from the first realisation of shared interests which occurs over a broken packing box filled with Mark's collection of DVDs and toys, through the sexual exploration, through the emotional miscommunication and to the last pages where Jamie is moving his own possessions, echoing the beginning of the book.

Sweet and sexy - which Jay Northcote does best!

Mark O’Brien amicably ends his relationship after admitting to himself - and his ex - that he’s gay. He’s ready to move out, but he’s a bit nervous about moving on with being an out gay man.

When Jamie Robertson, a younger removal man Mark hired, offers a night of fun, Mark decides to take the bull by the horns. He’s hooked from the first taste - on Jamie.

Right off the batt, I really liked the dynamic of younger Jamie initiating Mark into man-on-man love. Yeah it’s a bit of a laundry list of Gay Sex 101, but I still found it incredibly sweet how patient Jamie was.

And Mark was definitely an eager student once he got over his initial timidness! This is a sex-forward book, and the sexytimes are there in spades.

description

Beyond that, there’s a very sweet romance between Jamie and Mark. What starts off as just a bit of fun gradually turns into something more, with their lives slowly weaving together. I was a big fan of how family played a role in Mark and Jamie’s relationship!

I loved how these two cared for each other. Jamie taking care of a sick Mark was probably my favourite part of the book. And Mark won a lot of brownie points for how understanding he was of Jamie’s dyslexia.

This is a very low-angst romance. The love between the men builds at a steady pace. When it comes time to talk about what they really want out of their relationship, they do just that - talk. Imagine that!

I’d say the title of the book sums up the romance pretty accurately. It’s not particularly grand, but Mark and Jamie’s happy ever after - mellow and soft - is perfect for them.

description

My only niggle - the audiobook narrator didn’t fit the setting. While Michael Pauley did a decent job, his American accent kept distracting me when he was reading very obvious Britishisms.

Overall, this was a very easily enjoyable read. If you’re looking for an MM romance that’s low on the angst and high on the steam, give Nothing Serious a try!

Lovely, sweet, and sigh-worthy.

Mark might be slow coming out of the blocks, but boy does he not only catch up quick, but has amazing luck. After wasting time he has no intention of playing games, but sometimes complete honesty isn't easy. Mark's enthusiasm and guarded naiveté are adorable and I really liked that he went all in after his epiphany.
His thoughts and assumptions slid around and slotted into completely different places, like one of those sliding block puzzles he’d loved as a kid.

His immediate attraction to Jamie after the blinders came off wasn't surprising, but I had moments where I wanted to cringe for Mark. The awkwardness made me want to crawl into a hole, but Jamie's straightforwardness and good-nature made him so easy to love.

While their strengths are clearly different, both Mark and Jamie are inherently good, lovable people. Their struggle to come to terms with the changes is sweet if a bit doltish. Add in just enough age difference and there's subtle problems for these two.
Mark could only imagine the awkwardness of being paraded in front of someone’s parents as a booty call.

Recommend for romantics who enjoy things low key.

Jay is re-releasing this one so I'll be reading/reviewing it again at that point :)

The new version isn't on Goodreads yet but it has a gorgeous new cover from Garrett Leigh and looks fabulous.

Anyways, as I need this review for the Blog Review Tour, here's my re-review of the latest version (not that there's any changes other than the cover).

This was Jay's first novel but you'd never know that from the consummate skill in which he weaves this tale of a guy who comes out later in his life after splitting up with his girlfriend of nine years.

There's very little angst, just a slow realisation that the friends with benefits gig that Mark has going on with Jamie, the guy he met when he came along to help out his brother's removal firm taking all of Mark's stuff to his new place, might just be a bit more serious.

The two of them are ridiculously cute together, both scared of saying something about their feelings changing because it was only supposed to be a nothing serious relationship as Mark began to get some experience as an out gay man.

It's novella length but there's still quite a lot of world building and plotting which goes into it and it's just a really sweet read. The perfect beach or poolside romance.

With so many books full of angst and heartache, sometimes it’s nice to throw one in that is light, fluffy and sugary sweet. Nothing Serious is just what I needed!

Mark is ending his long-term relationship with Rachel and moving out now that he’s finally admitted to himself that he’s gay. When he meets Jamie, one of the moving guys, he is immediately smitten. When Jamie finds out Mark is “newly” gay, he offers to show him the ropes, fool around and let him experiment a bit. Their “friends with benefits” arrangement starts feeling like something more, but they are both too afraid to say anything. I loved Mark and Jamie together! And I loved how open and accepting Jamie’s family was. This is a very easy read, with LOTS of hot sex, and I really enjoyed it!

This was such a wonderful short story.

It's sweet, light and fun. But I also think it sends out a really important message.
It doesn't matter how old you are or the kinds of decisions you have made already in your life, you can be whoever you want to be. You can love whoever you want to love, no matter what sex they are.

This was a beautiful love story about Mark who realises, before it's too late, that he cannot marry the woman he has been with for the last nine years.
Mark is such a brave guy. Coming out to Rachel, being honest with himself and her. He saved her so from so much heartache in the future and I thought it was sweet that they remained friends and she was still there to offer her support.

Jamie has known since he was a young boy that he was gay and he came out to his family when he was a teenager. Some struggled with it at first, but it was lovely to see a family accept their son for who he is. To love him and want him to be happy, no matter who he's in a relationship with.

I absolutely loved their relationship and the fact that even though Jamie was the youngest (22, to Mark's 29), he was the confidant one. The one who offered his help to Mark. He offered to be there, to show him the ropes and just to be a friend that Mark can experiment with, without that fear of rejection.

I have to say that if you're looking for a story full of angst and hurdles to overcome before that HEA, then this isn't the book for you. But if you're looking for a little something to brighten you're day, I'd say go for it :D

I will definitely be reading more by Jay Northcote!
