Gene Turner casts a long shadow. One son finds comfort there--the other does not. Together, the three of them operate Dixieland Championship Wrestling at the local farm center in rural Gavin, Georgia, where every Friday night folks come from miles around to eagerly drop their paychecks on rasslin', popcorn, and cold beer.
But business isn't as good as it seems. The family is fractured and without a television deal, Dixieland is in trouble. There are threats from the outside as well. Rival promoter, Jim Burke, has a stranglehold on south Georgia, and the Turners have crossed a line. Now, not only is Dixieland in trouble, so are their lives.
This is unseen by 11 year old fan, Garrett. His world revolves around his friends, television, and rasslin'. But in the fall of 1985, the worlds of the Turners, Jim Burke, and Garrett collide in Dixieland.
Dixieland is a big-hearted southern gothic thriller. It's also the story of fathers and sons and the stark differences between surviving and living.
I am a father, husband, educator, and author. My first novel, Dixieland, was published in September 2017. Two short stories have been published online: "Kudzu" on Eunoia Review and "The Big Bass" on The Dead Mule. I enjoy music, movies, sports, reading, walking, and figuring stuff out. I am currently writing my second novel, The Curious Calling of Clinton Layfield.
It's the 1980's in Georgia, and the old wrestling territories are dying. An old line promoter tries to keep his business going by getting some TV time on Channel 5. A rival promoter is determined to stop him.
Told from the perspectives of the promoter, his two sons, and a young fan.
It was okay, but the ending was a bit of a downer.
Had a friend hand this to me, it was written by a guy he knew growing up and was set in the general area of SW Georgia.
I was expecting a wrestling novel, a little intrigue maybe some back stabbing. Buddy I was wrong, it had quite a plot and some rough characters. Plus it nailed the 80s, which are near and dear to my heart.
Great read & extremely proud to call the author one of my oldest & dearest friends......a brother if you will.....Great job Matt/ Doc........waiting on the next......took me LESS than 24 hours to read!!
