There are times when a pick-me-up is necessary, and for this Zidrou’s stories so far have been perfect.

The sequel to the wonderful Southbound! by Zidrou and Jordi Lafebre again brings us on a French vacation of the Falderault family who are as always leaving Belgium to enjoy a few weeks of summer sunshine on a countryside trip.

Nothing happens besides family moments — some sweet, some funny, some plainly adorable. And so alive with the sort of life in which it’s impossible to imagine not wanting to immerse yourself in for at least a little bit. A family, with strong ties and corny jokes, and most of all love. Nothing saccharinely sweet but just plain lovely.

This is a lighter story than the first volume, with fewer cracks in the family that need to be mended, with a bit more carefree spirit, with everything that a few years later serves as a foundation to hold this lovely family together. And it’s wonderful.

I love it.

4.5 stars.

The Faldéraults are going on another vacation to France. And you just know this is going to be fun.

description

For the next two sentences I’m just going to shamelessly steal from the reviews of my friends, because they already said it best. Nothing really happens in this book, but it's full of life. It’s just family moments – some sweet, some funny, some adorable. The lovely quirkiness of this adorable little family, their unconventional and creative approach to life, that’s what makes this something special.

description

Compared to the first book in this series, which is set 4 years later in 1973, there is less depth to the story, because the Faldéraults are not facing the same issues – marital problems, illness, frustration about unfulfilled dreams. But the strong bond that makes them capable of overcoming those problems is solidified here and in other books I suppose. There is already this cozy familiarity between the reader and the characters that adds to the joy of reading, and it is the funnier book too. So, I wouldn’t say that one is necessarily better than the other. They are different and yet familiar, and they are both wonderful.

I love these Belgians and want to spend many more summer vacations with them.

description

A book that warms the heart. Recommended to basically everyone.

Buddy read with Nataliya, who, I am sure, will join us on those future and past vacations. :)

Zidrou and Jordi Lafebre bring us a new “Beaux Été” (beautiful summer) with “La Calanque”, describing another holiday with the Belgian Faldérault-family. The summer of 1969 was dominated by the lunar landing and Eddy Merckx winning the 56th edition of the Tour de France, but also the launching of father Faldérault’s own comic-book series “Four” (About a four-armed sheriff in a no-good town in the Old West) and the happy news that the family is expected a little Faldérault-baby.

The first entry in the “Beaux Étés”-series, “Cap au Sud”, flawlessly captured that perfect atmosphere of nostalgia and carelessness and how we remember the summer holidays of our youth. It was sentimental, but also bittersweet, and absolutely gorgeously illustrated by Lafebre.
La Calanque”, while still a very sweet tale, is regretfully a step back from the first entry, mostly because it so closely resembles that first novel without exploring any new grounds. It’s the same family, in the same car, going to the same sun-drenched location. Which isn't bad, but it makes one wonder whether it justifies to have a series of "Beautiful Summers" when nothing new is added to the plate.
Another shortcoming can again be led back to Zidrou’s writing, and it has to do with his character development – or lack thereof. Going back to “Cap au Sud”, we had a father who was doubting his career-choices and a mother who, after years of marriage and four children, wasn’t sure whether she still loved the man with whom she’d build up her life. Next to the picture-perfect moments in the sun, these personal struggles made for a really interesting contrast.
None of that can be found in “La Calanque”. It’s a relaxing holiday for the Faldérault-family, but a little too careless for the audience. Chopping his characters down to such a minimum, without any internal struggles or signs of lives lived before those three weeks of holidays, makes Zidrou’s work certainly less impressive.

Another element which too closely resembles its predecessor, is Lafebre’s artwork – but there’s nothing to complain about there. His characters, mise-en-scène and clarity are wonderful and flawless, showcasing a master comic-book artist at work. While Zidrou’s writing might seem a bit flat, Lafebre proves the Faldérault-family is very much alive.

Los buenos veranos • llibre 1 i 2

M’he enamorat d’aquesta col·lecció.

Novel·la fresca i lleugera, fa moltes picades d’ullet a la vida mateixa i llegir aquests còmics t’arrenca amplis somriures.

He gaudit immensament!

Another idyllic slice of family summertime wanderlust, this time eventually ending up on the southern French coast of the Mediterranean. A bit of real-life melancholy still invades the bubble of their long Euro vacation, but slightly less consequentially this time. I loved their Franco-hating abuelo ending up with a dog named after Franco that he could boss around (and have as a companion in the house again as a widower).

“Four arms? Fantástico! That really would have helped back when I was laying brick! Your hero doesn’t happen to be a bricklayer?”
“No way! I already have a hero who’s a bricklayer.”
“Really? Who?”
“You!”

“So there’s nobody that can snuggle with him, then? Who does he talk to, at night, when he’s at his house?”
“To his memories of her, I guess.”
“Well, I’m never gonna get old! I want to stay a little girl forever!”

Another summer adventure for this family of vacationers, who aimlessly continue to prefer to head south to enjoy the sun and the sea as a family. Nice illustrations and cute characters and a nod to the world of comics within comics.

Udako beste abentura bat udatiar familia honentzat, nahiago jarraitzen baitute hegoaldera joatea familian eguzkiaz eta itsasoaz gozatzeko. Ilustrazio politak eta pertsonaia politak eta komikiaren barneko komikiaren munduari keinu bat.
