Leta 2009 se zato odpravi na romanje – 720 kilometrov dolg treking po severu Namibije. Daleč stran od vsakega udobja in civilizacije.

Tam spozna ženske, ki so se z neverjetno močjo povzpele od beračic in prostitutk do uspešnih poslovnih žensk.
Nazadnje pa ugodi še želji svoje hčerke Napirai, da bi obiskala svojo afriško družino. Napirai spozna svojega očeta, babico in kopico drugih sorodnikov, Corinne pa se sooči s svojimi spomini na prejšnje življenje …

A fascinating book by a Swiss woman who married a Masai warrior. They had a child together, and later divorced. The book about this period in her life is called "The White Masai". It was a best seller, and received excellent reviews.
This book is a follow up story about her later travels in Africa. She now lives in Switzerland, but then she returns to Africa. She started off by trekking in Namibia, this involved camels, desert, heat and amazing stoicism... It's a real adventure rather than the usual tourist experience.
She then went to Kenya - spending time in the slums of Nairobi, meeting some wonderful women who are working with a charity called Solitarité, to improve their quality of life. These women are truly heroic, with optimism, and great generosity of spirit in spite of all they have been through. I was completely bowled over by their guts and courage. She also meets up with football players from Mathare United, the football team playing for the slum district. They do amazing work in the community, as well as playing football, and have twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Then she returns a second time to Kenya - this time taking her teenage daughter with her. They go to meet her father, and his wider family. When she left them the first time she set up something called The 'White Masai' Kenya Foundation, which has been supporting health and education projects in the area. There is obviously a deep mutual affection between her and the people who live there. The reunion between her and the village was most touching, and her respect for the Masai people really comes across. They were also thrilled to meet her daughter - step-sister to several of the children in the village.
Her love of Africa, her passion for adventure, and her close connections with people all make this book a wonderful read. I now can't wait to go back and read her first book.

Yet another memoir by Corinne Hofmann! I am getting quite addicted to her books and I am rather sorry there is just one more left of her interesting life saga. I didn't even read it in order, but as long as you read The White Masai first, the rest are sort of interchangeable.
Africa, My Passion is spread rather too thin to cover everything she wanted to properly. It first starts off as a narrative of an expedition to Namibia and Kenya, after which it switches to Corinne going to interview people for different projects helping the Kenyan people who are living in poverty. And then again, it veers off to talk about Napirai, Corinne's and Lketinga's daughter, who visits Africa for the first time to meet her father and her paternal family.
Now, the book was well written, but much of the narrative was so vague that I never got as immersed as I got into Hofmann's other books. She talked about the lives of some women in Africa who had survived and prospered despite their circumstances, but while it was interesting, I found it superficial. The same goes for Corinne's expedition to Namibia, which could have been given greater detail.
The best part of the book was obviously Napirai's meeting with Lketinga. The latter had changed his jealous and abusive ways, and was supposedly in a good place. It was touching to see the father and daughter meet for the first time. I think this story deserved its own book! Maybe Napirai will write her own memoir someday.

Didnt like the bits by Napirai, tho inclyding them is a great idea. The writing style is still very dry and not agreeing with me. The bits of her visiting the slums and charities would've been much more effective if only it wasn't a bunch of info dump. It could've involved us readers more there.

Dá se říct, že čtvrté pokračování od Corinne Hofmann, autorky Bílé Masajky, musím říct, že se mi líblo víc než předchozí "třetí" díl (Shledání v Barsaloi). Je to příjemné a pohodové čtení se spoustou zajímavých životních osudů obyvatel Keni. Také je hezky vykresleno první velké setkání po letech dcerky Napirai se svojí africkou rodinou, je to dojemné a krásně autorkou popsané. Všechny knížky této autorky bych určitě doporučila.

Am ales în această seară să vă scriu despre ultimul volum scris de Corinne Hofmann, apărut în Editura ALFFA în anul 2012. Cartea ,,Africa, dragostea mea”, face parte din colecţia de ,,Cărţi adevărate”, exemple de viaţă, cărţi care te remontează după ce le citeşti şi îţi schimbă modul de a gândi şi visele.
Am ajuns la cartea a patra scrisă de Corinne Hofmann şi vreau să împărtăşesc emoţiile trăite alături de oamenii din Kenya şi din Namibia. Poveşti extraordinare de viaţă au fost descoperite de această autoare, în călătoriile prin Africa şi trebuie să vă mărturisesc că am aşteptat să treacă mulţi ani, până când Napirai să-şi întâlnească tatăl masai.
Pentru mine, această carte ,,Africa, dragostea mea” este o carte a curajului, în care oamenii din Kenya te învaţă cum să supravieţuieşti într-o lume plină de sărăcie, cum să accepţi şi să înţelegi ajutorul primit din partea organizaţiilor de caritate.
După o călătorie cu prietena ei, în India, Corinne zboară în data de 15 mai 2009 la Windhuk, Namibia. Face diferenţa între femeile Himba şi cele Samburu. Am participat cu emoţie la un dans sălbatic al femeilor Himba care trăiesc în nordul Namibiei. Un material despre acest dans, am scris în perioada sărbătorilor de iarnă, de aceea voi trece repede peste distracţia acestor femei şi descopăr noi provocări în Kenya.
La sfârşitul lunii februarie 2010, Corinne ajunge în Nairobi, capitala Kenyei. Transformări la tot pasul o încântă. Găseşte multe maşini, magazine, nu se vede nicăieri gunoi şi descoperă că interdicţia oficială de a fuma este eficientă. La hotel, femeia de serviciu vine zilnic, iar paznicul câştigă între 80 şi 120 de euro pe lună. Sunt prezentate peste 10 poveşti de succes ale unor oameni care credeau că Dumnezeu nu există şi că vor trăi mereu în ghetou, furând, prostituându-se sau având parte de violenţă. Însă Dumnezeu îşi trimite pe pământ îngeri care să-i salveze din sărăcie, să le arate calea şi să-i înveţe să lupte pentru existenţa lor.
Mă opresc doar la două proiecte, care m-au marcat în mod deosebit.
Proiectul organizaţiei franceze Solidarités, care-i învaţă pe oameni să planteze legume în saci mari de plastic, umpluţi cu pământ. În ghetou nu există supraveţe verzi, de aceea, marea grădină verde, Grădina din Eden, aş numi-o eu, este o oază de bucurie şi emoţie pentru aceşti oameni, cărora li s-a dat o şansă să vândă ceea ce produc şi să-şi câştige existenţa. Acest proiect prezentat tinerilor care cerşesc, fură sau se droghează are succes şi schimbă vieţile celor care au încredere.
Proiectul Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) este adresat fotbaliştilor. Aceşti jucători provin în majoritate din ghetouri, au fost propuşi de 2 ori pentru Premiul Nobel pentru pace, câştigă între 100 şi 300 de euro, iar după antrenamente, ei sunt modele pentru tinerii din ghetou. Impresionant este faptul că, ei prestează diverse munci în folosul comunităţii, îngrijesc bătrâni, merg la conferinţe despre protecţia SIDA, vizitează tineri în închisori şi iau parte la acţiuni de curăţenie în ghetou. Îşi doresc să joace fotbal în Europa, pentru a câştiga bani, pentru a reuşi să construiască în Kenya şi să-şi ajute familiile.
Interviurile Corinnei te incită să mergi acolo, să vezi cum acei oameni s-au ridicat din mizerie, să-i ajuţi pentru a contribui la educaţia şi cultura lor.
Cel mai aşteptat moment este întâlnirea masaiului Lketinga cu fiica sa, Napirai, după aproape 20 de ani. Schimbul de gânduri, de vise, de întrebări şi de emoţii colorează tabloul familiei africane. James, fratele mai mic al lui Lketinga doreşte să construiască o casă albă în Barsaloi, pentru a-şi aminti mereu de ajutorul Corinnei. Napirai se bucură de fiecare minut petrecut în compania bunicii, a rudelor şi a copiilor din Barsaloi care aleargă după ea, pentru a primi dulciuri.
Napirai dezvăluie despre călătoria sa în Africa:
,,Sunt atât de bucuroasă să am o familie atât de caldă. Această vizită mi-a depăşit toate aşteptările. Întâlnirea cu tatăl meu a fost unul dintre cele mai importante momente din viaţa mea şi sunt foarte recunoscătoare pentru ea. Nu ştiu ce va aduce viitorul, dar ştiu că această călătorie m-a făcut foarte puternică. Şi ştiu acum ce oameni iubitori am în spate.”
Această carte nu este o poveste de iubire, de curaj sau de călătorii. Are şi un scop umanitar, deoarece prin cumpărarea ei putem oferi un mic sprijin Asociaţiei Kenya Masai albă.
Sunt fericită să pot sprijini aceste proiecte, deoarece am cumpărat mai multe cărţi pe care să le dăruiesc prietenilor, în semn de apreciere. Mă bucur pentru că au lăsat un comentariu la recenziile scrise şi vor contribui la plantarea copăceilor în Mediaş.

The first half of the book comprises of interviews of slum-dwellers of Kibera, Nairobi, collated by Hofmann from her solo trip to Kenya. These were impressive & triumphant stories, but often felt like padding/ space-fillers. The second half details Naparai's first ever meeting with her dad. I enjoyed reading Naparai's thoughts on her experiences, but they were all, unfortunately, brief, stiff, distant & guarded. Brother-in-Law James's letter detailing his dream of opening a White Masai themed motel/museum was lovely & touching, as was Letinkga's pride & joy at meeting his Swiss daughter. It was nice to see how well-adjusted he's become, now a remarried shop-owner with three kids. Particular interesting (& creepy) was the Masai mens' attempts to take Naparai as their bride. Overall a solid account that draws to a close, the life story of this fascinating woman.

Zece ani de „Masai albă” sunt suficienți, credeam eu. Ultima mea lectură a avut loc în 25 octombrie 2008, în fața publicului încântat din micul oraș Lauchhammer, din Brandenburg. Cu un ochi care plânge și unul care râde, am părăsit scena în aplauze îndelungi, pentru a mă așeza pentru ultima oară la o masă mică, de autografe. Mulți dintre cei aproximativ 300 de ascultători și ascultătoare își doreau să mă mai vadă o dată și să-și ia rămas bun cu o strângere de mână. Auzeam tot timpul:
― Doamna Hofmann, vă rugăm, trebuie să continuați să scrieți. Viața dumneavoastră este atât de interesantă. Am vrea, vă rugăm, să aflăm cum îi merge familiei dumneavoastră africane și să ne povestiți când fiica dumneavoastră își vizitează tatăl. Ah, totul ne interesează, scrieți atât de frumos.
Astfel de lucruri sau unele asemănătoare am auzit preț de o oră, înainte de a-mi pune ultima semnătură pe una dintre cărțile mele.
Mi-au plăcut foarte mult aceste evenimente, dar în acest moment mă gândesc că trebuie să existe o viață și fără Africa și fără îndrăgostită de un Masai.
La doar două săptămâni după acest eveniment am pornit, cu o prietenă dragă și foarte interesantă, într-o călătorie de patru săptămâni prin India, căci îmi dorisem de mult să cunosc cultura acestei țări. Firește că patru săptămâni nu înseamnă mult, dar era totuși un început și am hotărât să vizitez în special nordul țării.
Prima oprire a fost la Delhi, un oraș uriaș, în care ești permanent înconjurat de mase imense de oameni. Am închiriat o mașină cu șofer și el ne-a plimbat cu iscusință printre ricșe și taxiuri cu trei roți, spre diferite obiective turistice. Totul mi se părea interesant, dar în scurt timp am observat că pe parcursul acestui tip de călătorie îmi lipsește contactul cu elementul autohton.
Când am trecut pe lângă piață, l-am rugat pe șofer să oprească, pentru a putea vizita împrejurimile pe jos. Trebuia să miros, să simt și să gust, altfel nu aveam senzația că am ajuns într-o țară nouă. Șoferul nu s-a arătat prea încântat și ne-a spus:
― Aici nici măcar eu, ca indian, nu am mers pe jos.
Totuși noi am coborât și m-am simțit dintr-odată mai bine, deși eram fixate de sute de perechi de ochi.
― Doamna Hofmann, vă rugăm, trebuie să continuați să scrieți. Viața dumneavoastră este atât de interesantă. Am vrea, vă rugăm, să aflăm cum îi merge familiei dumneavoastră africane și să ne povestiți când fiica dumneavoastră își vizitează tatăl. Ah, totul ne interesează, scrieți atât de frumos.

Deci nu m-am putut abține să nu termin in concediu seria ce aduce in prim plan povestea lui Corinne, elvețiană căsătorită cu un masai.
A fost plăcut să văd că într-un final Naiprai a luat decizia să își viziteze și să își cunoască familia din Kenya și mi-a plăcut faptul că această s-a apropiat repede de frații vitregi și de bunica cu toate că nu le vorbea limba . Revederea lui Corinne cu Priscilla a fost emoționanta și sper din suflet că au păstrat legătura și protagonista își ajută prietena din Kenya .

Mă refer la faptul că au fost prea multe pagini pe aceasta parte pentru gustul meu .
Pe de altă parte ce am apreciat în toate cărțile lui Corinne a fost faptul că nu a încercat să prezinte cultura samburu și cea keninana într-o lumină proasta , ci dimpotrivă tot timpul a subliniat faptul că continentul negru va avea un loc special în inima ei. Drept urmare recomand și aceasta carte.

Dit boek heb ik uitgekozen omdat de schrijfster een lange voettocht door Namibië heeft gemaakt en deze beschreven. Zelf heb ik recent een reis door het prachtige Namibië achter de rug, dus ik vond dat gedeelte heerlijk en herkenbaar om te lezen.
Het gedeelte van het boek dat begint met de terugreis naar Kenia, om haar dochter kennis te laten maken met haar Afrikaanse roots en familie daar vond ik ook mooi en intrigerend om te lezen.
Het middenstuk van het boek beschrijft de werk bezoeken aan verschillende humanitaire organisaties en hun mensen. Op de een of andere manier kon dit me als lezer niet voldoende betrekken en heb ik er scannend door heen gebladerd. Ondanks de persoonlijke verhalen van mensen wiens leven positief is beïnvloed door deze initiatieven. Wellicht is het toch de schrijfstijl die hier invloed op heeft.

Once again I’m swept up in Frau Hoffman’s story, her life, & her experiences in Africa. This time, also learning about some amazing Kenyan people she meets. I’m sad this is the last book! I’d love to hear more. She is so fascinating!

it was not as immersive as corrine's other books and i think trying to cover so many varied experiences led to a vague experience for me, it wasn't bad and i think it's a worthwhile read still!

Memoir set in Namibia and Kenya (“a memoir of tremendous courage or tremendous naivety?”)
This book is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel. The original, written almost 30 years ago, was called “The White Masai” and told the story of the author, a woman of either tremendous courage or tremendous naivety depending on your point of view, who decided that she loved a Masai tribesman. The upshot was that she married him and went to live with him in his village. The reader will not be surprised to learn that the marriage ended acrimoniously after a few years, and the self-styled “White Masai” fled Kenya with the couple’s infant daughter in order to resume her comfortable life in Switzerland. This first book was a tremendous success, which sold millions and was made into a film. In the years since then Corinne Hofmann has published two other books, Back from Africa, and Reunion in Barsaloi, both written to capitalize on the success of the first.
Africa, My Passion is a very strange book as it’s divided into a number of parts which appear to have little to do with each other. However, all the elements are interesting in their ways. First, there’s the expedition she joins after seeing an advert in a travel magazine, which involves a couple of months walking in northern Namibia. This is moderately adventurous but despite the author being in her late forties, it’s more gap year than Livingstone. Then there’s the description of her visit to Nairobi which furnishes her with inspiring stories from the slums. This is the stuff of Sunday supplements; feel-good but not ground-breaking. Then finally there’s the story which forms the core of the book, the trip the author and her daughter make to Kenya.
I have to confess that I hadn’t read any of her earlier works so I came to this narrative quite unprepared. To my mind, this book provides a wonderful opportunity to get inside the head of one of the most exasperating women you can possibly imagine, without having to meet her yourself. As far as I can see, she is interested in other places and people only in so far as these encounters reflect favorably on her, and in real life I doubt I could spend an hour in her company without giving her a sharp slap out of sheer exasperation.
In the end, the author’s meeting with her ex-husband is an anti-climax and there is no discernable feeling on her part or his. The daughter’ diary entries are wooden and as she returns to Switzerland to resume her hairdressing course, she baldly concludes that she’s had a good time and will return one day. I bet her African family can hardly wait.
I enjoyed reading about Kenya and Namibia, but what will remain with me is a question unrelated to Africa; how can a person arrive at middle-age without learning any of the lessons life offers along the way? Despite her extensive travels and encounters with people from other cultures, time has brought Corinne Hofmann little self-knowledge, humility or wisdom. Her passion is reserved for herself rather than for Africa.

This book turned out to be a splendid read. I've neither read The White Masai nor the two sequels, but watched the motion picture. Hence, wasn't entirely convinced I would relish this third sequel. The book starts slow, but picks up speed a third way through as Corinne returns to Kenya and spends time in Kibera, a vast slum in the outskirts of Nairobi. There she meets and interviews numerous slum dwellers, each with increasingly compelling story of survival against seemingly insurmountable odds. Corrine does a good job capturing and carrying the voices of some courageous residents of Kibera. The journey back to Samburu country with daughter Napirai is poignant. The reunion with her Samburu clan is the most touching part of the book. Even Samburu warrior Lketinga finds some redemption.

I read and very much enjoyed Hofmann’s previous books, “The White Masai,” “Reunion in Barsaloi,” and “Back From Africa.” So I was looking forward to reading about her next adventures.
The first portion of the book focuses on Hofmann’s trips to Kenya on a walking trek with camels and another return trip where she interviews several Nairobi slum dwellers.
In the second half, Hofmann travels with her daughter, Napirai, to meet her father and his family.
Hofmann’s story is unusual and enlightening. She’s uniquely qualified and able to inform her readers about the Himba people and their ways of life from an insider’s view.

I read the English version, the White Masai, but cannot find it on Goodreads. This book SO irritated me. I cannot believe how rich Corinne has got by selling her books and movie scripts. Seriously, I would rather believe in father xmas being a go go dancer than to believe that you see a Masai warrior on a ferry and then just leave everything behind in Switzerland to marry this man. Even the masai warrior was adamant, that this could not work, but STILL she went through all that trauma. No prize for everyone guessing the right answer to how this story ends ...

Dit boek heb ik in de papieren Nederlandse editie gelezen. Opnieuw een boeiend verhaal over Afrika. Op sommige punten wat al te uitgebreid. Zo heb ik het verhaal over de voetbalclub maar overgeslagen. Bijzonder om te lezen dat de dochter van Corinne Hofmann zo ontzettend welkom is bij het familiebezoek. De titel heb ik niet kunnen verklaren. 'Mijn droom van Afrika' is een beschrijving van de levens van mensen in Kenia en de gevoelens van Corinne. Maar wat nu precies haar droom is?

I actually enjoyed this book more than the White Masai. Corinne Hoffman's writing has matured since her first book. While she's no Shakespeare, her subject matter is interesting enough to hold your attention. Her affection for the Kenyan people comes through and she is much less self righteous than her first book.
