ഒടിയൻ എന്ന വാക്ക് ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായിട്ട് കേൾക്കുന്നത് മോഹൻലാലിന്റെ പുതിയ ചിത്രത്തെ കുറിച്ച് ഫേസ്ബുക്കിൽ കണ്ടപ്പോളാണ്. അതിനെ തുടർന്ന് കുറച്ചു നാളുകൾക്കു മുൻപ് ഒരു ഫേസ്ബുക്ക് പോസ്റ്റ് കാണാൻ ഇടയായി ആ പോസ്റ്റ് ആരാണ് ഒടിയൻ എന്ന് വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അങ്ങനെ തിരയുന്നിതിന് ഇടയിൽ ആണ് ഈ നോവൽ എന്റെ കൈയിൽ കിട്ടുന്നത്. വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ കഥയും ആവിഷ്കരണവും. എന്നെ വല്ലാതെ ആകർഷിച്ചു.

*പറയർ മരിക്കുമ്പോൾ മരിച്ചു എന്നല്ല ചത്തു എന്നാണ് പറയുക. ആ ജന്മങ്ങൾ മൃഗസമാനമാണ് എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിൽ.
പറയനായ, നാട്ടിലെ ഒരേയൊരു ഒടിയനായ കരിമാണ്ടി, ഒരു വലിയപ്പന്റെ മരണ വാർത്ത പറയാൻ തന്റെ വീട്ടിലെത്തിയ ബന്ധുവായ വേലന് കള്ളു കൊടുത്ത് സൽക്കരിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അതിനായി കള്ളു മോഷ്ടിക്കാൻ ഉള്ള ശ്രമത്തിനിടയിൽ പനയിൽ നിന്ന് വീണു ജീവച്ഛവം പോലെ ആകുന്നു. ഭാര്യയായ പറക്കാടത്തി ആ തന്റെ വയറ്റിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു കുട്ടിയെ പ്രസവിക്കുകയും, അതിനെ വളർത്താൻ കഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും, പല ജോലികളിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മരണം മുൻകൂട്ടി കാണാനുള്ള കഴിവ് പതിനാറാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ അവളുടെ മകനായ വെള്ളമായൻ നേടുന്നു. ഇത് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ നാട്ടുകാർ അവനെ ആക്രമിക്കാനും അപായപ്പെടുത്താനും ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു.

വായനയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ എനിക്ക് മടുപ് തോന്നുകയും, പതുകെ താല്പര്യം ആകുകയും, അവസാനം ആയപ്പോൾ വളരെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.

I loved the way the novel presented the supernatural and how it resembles a folktale at places, but I am a bit disappointed with the latter part of the story where Vellamayan comes to predict death instead of being an Odiyan as I didn't exactly understand the significance of this with regard to the story. I also felt that the poverty of the Nair families in the novel are shown to be just as bad as that of Vellamayan's family, (or maybe even worse as the internal monologues of Lakshmyemma and Malinyemma suggest) eventhough in reality it wouldn't be the same. Would love to see a different perspective on the myth of Odiyan.

A rare story centred on a small village in Palakkad district where rigid social structures, customs of untouchability and hierarchy of caste was embedded in the DNA of people. As several writers have brought their native villages to limelight through their stories (For example: Mukundan-Mahe, U A Khader-Trikkottoor, Thakazhi-Kuttanad) Kannankutty brought Paruthipully village to the limelight.
The story begins with the unforeseen fall of Karimandi a ‘paraya’and the local odiyan from a Palmyra tree while on a mission to steal a little toddy to serve to a guest. He miraculously recovers and remains in a vegetable state while his wife Kada struggles to feed him and the child growing in her womb. Her boy at the age of sixteen acquires the capacity to see death of people in advance and to escape the wrath of villagers learns to practice ‘Odi’ without anybody’s help. His mother helped him to regain his original form by performing the secret ritual she learned from her mother in law. At the time when Kada was on her death bed, she requests her son to appear in the form of a black cat which he does. Kada dies without transforming her son to human form.
The narrative is very crisp, with a judicious mix of very short, short and medium sentences having clinical precision and impact. The vocabulary and slangs of the communities were depicted loud and clear giving a real-time experience of the unique dialect.

As the author P Kannankutty explains in this video, he does not know any odiyan. This book is based on hearsay accounts and imagination.
Kannankutty says that odiyans, who are from the Paraya community, change into the shape of animals, such as cats, bulls, snakes, etc. The animal they turn into may have some imperfection, by which they can be recognized. For example, the bull they turn into may not have a tail.
They also perform odi, a form of black magic, but never for personal reasons. Instead, they use it to help others, largely to settle personal scores. However, according to Kannankutty, odiyans were not villainous or negative characters. They were a part of society.
The book's story is set at a time when people lived in caste-based settlements or ‘tharas’. Although they are supposed to be valued for their role in society, the two odiyans in this book are sad, cursed characters because of their unique circumstances and the effect of changing times.
The other characters too do not have much joy in their respective lives. I prefer books with some sort of triumph or happiness for at least some of them, if not all. That being said, I liked this book despite its overwhelming sadness.
I have heard many tales about odiyans from my mother and grandparents. So, the premise of this book was not new to me. I am also conversant with many customs, rituals, and ways of living mentioned in the book.
Moreover, I could see shades of familiar faces in many of the characters. The descriptions of the land, the rituals, and the general milieu also reminded me of my ancestral home and its surroundings.

Odiyan is a must read. It is of the dark fantasy genre. The premise is a village in Kerala that is replete with many forms and manifestations of the occult and how the people try to tackle it. Do not have the impression that this is the story of the movie Odiyan, both are vastly different. The author has successfully chronicled the setting of a specific age in Palakkad when the roots of modernism is going deeper and the old ways are failing and being discarded.

The Author have portrayed the old Palakadan Culture clearly. It's said to be real even nowadays but according to literature its Magical Realism.
Best part is that the author have wrote the dialogues as it is used in the period of happening, and showed the difference of classes( cast systems) through the language they have used.
Its a great book in one word.

It’s a gem of a book, which nicely portrays and visualise native culture and hearsays …
Author Kannankutty has intertwined the story and the folklore with an tragic climax which really showcases the end of a lifestyle.

Story is narrated well...i can feel a MT style in the narration. One story of odiyan and mantravadi was told to me by my father...looks like the author also heard it from the folklore. The places ate very close to my native keralassery and hence i found the story interesting...

March 2019 Read - This novel talks about the life of people in Paruthippulli village of Palakkadu. Karimandi, Parakkadathi, Vellamayan, Kuppelan, Maliniyamma, Kannan, Kunhikkavamma, Chanthan are few characters in this Novel. Overall good read

നല്ലതിനോ ചീത്തതിനോവായി അന്യംനിന്നുപോയ സംസ്കാരങ്ങൾ ഏറെയുള്ള നാടാണ് നമ്മുടേത്. അത്തരമൊരു സംസ്കൃതിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും ഒടുവിലത്തെ കണ്ണികൾ ഊതിക്കാച്ചിവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതാണ് പി.കണ്ണൻകുട്ടിയുടെ ഒടിയൻ. അതിന്റെ തിളക്കവും പകിട്ടും ആ കണ്ണികളുടെ സൗന്ദര്യാസ്വാദനത്തെ ഏറെ സഹായിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്.

ബുക്ക് കയ്യിലെടുത്തപ്പോൾ ആദ്യം ഓർത്തത് ഒടിയൻ മാണിക്യന്റെ കഥയാണോ എന്നാണ്. എന്നാൽ എന്റെ ആ തോന്നലിന് യാതൊരു സാധ്യതയുമില്ലെന്ന് ആദ്യപേജിൽ തന്നെ മനസ്സിലായി.
120 പേജിൽ പറഞ്ഞ ഈ കഥ പരുത്തിപ്പുള്ളി എന്ന ഒരു കൊച്ചുഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളറകളിലേക്ക് നമ്മെ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു. അയിത്തവും തൊട്ടുകൂടായ്മയും അതിന്റെ പരമോന്നതിയിൽ നിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലത്ത് നിന്ന് ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന കഥ അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോൾ കാലം കുറെയേറെ പുരോഗമിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരു കൂട്ടം ആളുകളുടെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളിലേക്കും അന്ധവിശ്വാസങ്ങളിലേക്കും ദാരിദ്ര്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും സമ്പന്നതയിലേക്കും തന്റെ ആഖ്യാനശൈലികൊണ്ട് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നമ്മളെ ആവാഹിക്കുകയാണെന്ന് തോന്നും. അത്രയ്ക്കും നല്ല എഴുത്ത്. നല്ല ഭാഷ.
നാഴി ഇടങ്ങഴി കണക്കുകൾ ഗ്രാമും കിലോഗ്രാമും ആയപ്പോൾ പകച്ചു നിന്നവർക്ക് തന്റെ കണക്കുകൾ പിഴയ്ക്കുന്നതായി തോന്നി. തീണ്ടാപ്പാടകലെ നിന്നവർ പുതിയ അറ കെട്ടി ധാന്യങ്ങൾ സൂക്ഷിക്കാൻ ആരംഭിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഒരുകാലത്ത് നിലവറയും പത്തായപ്പുരയും കവിഞ്ഞ് നിന്നിരുന്ന മേൽജാതിക്കാർ മറുതുണിക്ക് പോലും വലയുന്ന കാഴ്ച ഖേദകരമായിരുന്നു.

120 പേജിൽ പറഞ്ഞ ഈ കഥ പരുത്തിപ്പുള്ളി എന്ന ഒരു കൊച്ചുഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളറകളിലേക്ക് നമ്മെ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു. അയിത്തവും തൊട്ടുകൂടായ്മയും അതിന്റെ പരമോന്നതിയിൽ നിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലത്ത് നിന്ന് ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന കഥ അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോൾ കാലം കുറെയേറെ പുരോഗമിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരു കൂട്ടം ആളുകളുടെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളിലേക്കും അന്ധവിശ്വാസങ്ങളിലേക്കും ദാരിദ്ര്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും സമ്പന്നതയിലേക്കും തന്റെ ആഖ്യാനശൈലികൊണ്ട് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നമ്മളെ ആവാഹിക്കുകയാണെന്ന് തോന്നും. അത്രയ്ക്കും നല്ല എഴുത്ത്. നല്ല ഭാഷ.
നാഴി ഇടങ്ങഴി കണക്കുകൾ ഗ്രാമും കിലോഗ്രാമും ആയപ്പോൾ പകച്ചു നിന്നവർക്ക് തന്റെ കണക്കുകൾ പിഴയ്ക്കുന്നതായി തോന്നി. തീണ്ടാപ്പാടകലെ നിന്നവർ പുതിയ അറ കെട്ടി ധാന്യങ്ങൾ സൂക്ഷിക്കാൻ ആരംഭിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഒരുകാലത്ത് നിലവറയും പത്തായപ്പുരയും കവിഞ്ഞ് നിന്നിരുന്ന മേൽജാതിക്കാർ മറുതുണിക്ക് പോലും വലയുന്ന കാഴ്ച ഖേദകരമായിരുന്നു.

Great book about the subaltern life of inner palakkad ....the book tells the story of deities and Gods....rituals....all about the miserable life of poor......the writing style follows the classic novel style in Malayalam literature.....
