Grant and Lee. The Virginia campaigns 1864-1865.

Rate this book
The third in the original classic trilogy, this book follows the path of the commanders during the final decisive campaigns of the Civil War. Like his first two books, it uses photographs taken during the campaign and analyzes them, comparing modern photos of the same sites.

This is an old book, but still first rate. Frassanito did an excellent job analyzing many Civil War photographs as to when and where the photos were made. It reads in some respects like a detective book.

The title is misleading. This is, in fact, a history of the photographic history of the principal campaigns in Virginia during 1864 and 1865. For hardcore buffs, the book will be fascinating. For those with a more casual interest in the war, the text will be at times tedious. For all, the photographs should be compelling. Minus one star for the misleading title.

The author was a tad egocentric, but a great book. Keep your magnifying glass handy!
