Stone Creek, Michigan, April, 1901 — Maggie Galloway and Thomas Harper clash after their sons collide in a fistfight. Both widowed, they’re each doing their best as single-parents. Outgoing Maggie has dreams for a home of her own and a business to provide for her son as she searches for God’s path for her life as a widow. Reserved Thomas struggles to establish his new pharmacy and take care of his four rambunctious children, while wondering how a loving God could take his beloved wife. When Thomas becomes deathly ill, Maggie is recruited to nurse him back to health. Taking the children in hand, as well, is more than she bargained for, but she is drawn to help the grieving family. Both nurse and patient find themselves drawn to each other but promptly deny their feelings. A baking contest sponsored by the Silver Leaf Flour Company brings former beau, Giles Prescott, back into Maggie’s life. When Giles offers Maggie a position at their test kitchen in Chicago, he hints that, along with assuring her a good job, it will allow them to possibly rekindle their relationship. But then a charlatan comes to town, and tragedy soon follows. Maggie and Thomas discover the miracle potions he hawks aren’t so harmless when an epidemic hits Stone Creek. Thomas and Maggie realize they must work together to save lives. Maggie finds herself caught up in battles within and without—the battle to help the townsfolk in the midst of illness and chicanery, and the battle to know which man—Thomas or Giles—deserves to win her heart. I was excited to read Secrets and Wishes, knowing especially that it was a sequel to Rumors and Promises, which I enjoyed. Secrets and Wishes was just as great! I grinned at Maggie being headstrong--really appropriate since she needed to be to move forward in life--and nodded at Thomas's caring dad role. One thing I can always count on with a Kathleen Rouser novel is slipping back into time and staying there for the duration of the whole novel--she's an author who adores history.

Secrets and Wishes by Kathleen Rouser tells the sweet story of a widow and widower who dance around the preposterous idea of falling in love with each other. Yet they have what the other needs. Maggie Galloway’s first husband was a pharmacist and she has the organizational skills that will make Thomas Harper’s new apothecary shine. Plus, she can be a great new mother for Thomas’s three orphaned and out of control children. Thomas can fill the lonely spot in her heart and be the father Maggie’s son needs. Yet their unique personalities and Maggie’s encounter with an old flame threaten to keep a relationship from ever happening.

Secrets and Wishes proves a book doesn’t have to be filled with one catastrophe after another to be a compelling read. I enjoyed the description of the simple life of the early 1900’s and simple problems like winners of cookie baking contests, unruly children, and extravagant inappropriate gifts. This was a delightful read. My only confusion – and maybe it’s me – I didn’t understand the connection of the title to the story!

Kathleen Rouser created an absolutely overwhelming and heartfelt read with Secrets and Wishes, sequel to Rumors and Promises. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and was right in the moment throughout this astonishing story. The research Rouser did for the early 1900’s apothecary and medicines being peddled by traveling shows, that caused harm at times, shined through.

The hero and heroine were three dimensional with true to life issues during the setting. My emotions were right there whether it was the grief Maggie and Thomas felt for their deceased spouse, providing for the children who missed their other parent, the award for Maggie’s entry in a baking contest, the community events that were not always pleasant to deal with or the prayers being offered to gain clarity for decisions to be made. The scenes and dialogues were vivid that kept me turning the pages and connecting with all that was happening. There was never a dull moment in the action with unanticipated twists and turns from the primary and secondary characters. It was nice to reconnect with Ian and Sophie McCormick and others from book one in this series. I appreciate the underlying message of God’s faithfulness, love, and second chances that Rouser interwove into this story. As I read the last line and closed the book, I was savoring the beauty of this heartwarming story.

I look forward to reading more books by Kathleen Rouser. I’m really hoping she’ll have another story set in Stone Creek, Michigan with these lovable community residents to see what is transpiring in their lives.

First, I loved the cover on this book, and the word pictures as I read, drew me in.
I enjoyed this read, and see individuals here hurting after losing their spouse, and having a hard time moving on. The story takes place in 1901 Michigan, and a different time, prior to drug regulations, and the aftermath of a charlatan.
Another part of this story is a woman who has lost her beloved husband, and a man who has lost his dear wife, and while both are grieving, he is having a hard time coping with his life and taking care of his three children. One could almost laugh when you see what his sons do to his housekeeper, but they are a handful but you will find a chuckle or so.
As I was reading I discovered that there was a previous book, but facts were brought forth and I was not at all lost.
You can see Maggie leaning towards an old boyfriend, but found myself rooting for Thomas, but she is a woman of faith, and you will wonder to the end whom she will end up with.

I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.

I love historical romance and Kathleen Rouser has a way with words. This sequel to Rumors and Promises does not disappoint. Secrets & Wishes is set in the early 1900s when aspirin was replacing some herbal remedies and the horseless carriage were considered dangerous contraptions. Medicine shows and other superstitions still plagued doctors and pharmacies alike. Descriptions of the town and the new-fangled pharmacy give the readers a you-are-there feeling. Something, I as a reader love.
This romance isn’t easily tied up with a ribbon. Maggie, a baker and Thomas, the new pharmacist in town, both widowed with children must navigate many misunderstandings to even become friends. Romantic intensions bubble to the surface as illness and saving the town from a charlatan forces them to take a second look at each other. Secondary characters full of superstition are a good foil to Thomas’ more educated viewpoints and Maggie’s practical ministrations. Wonderful read. I finished this in a single weekend because the plot is so compelling.

While this is the second book in a series (and my first introduction to Kathleen Rouser), I didn’t feel at all like I was coming into the middle of a story. Secrets and Wishes definitely stands on its own.

To me, this book felt very episodic which, to be fair, is how the description reads. For my personal taste, the overarching conflict just wasn’t enough to really engage me in the story. I did, however, enjoy spending time with Thomas, Maggie, their children, and some of the residents of Stone Creek, Michigan as well as the information and knowledge Thomas and Maggie have about medicine and other healing remedies, adding a unique angle to the story.

Rouser takes readers to a small town and introduces them to many of the blessings and challenges of the small town in 1901. There are also the dangers that threaten their way of life (and in one case their actual lives) through the introduction of outsiders.

Kathleen Rouser writes an endearing Christian historical fiction romance from the early 1900's. This was the first book that I have read by this author. I did not realize that it was a squeal. When I read the last page of Secrets and Wishes, I had to go on Amazon and purchase Rumors and Promises. I can not wait to start it. Even though I will be reading them out of sequence, I am sure I will enjoy both. Secrets and Wishes worked fine as a stand alone book.

Her characters are so well crafted, you will find yourself caring for each of them. She has an ability to make a sitting or location come to life. I found the information and details of the apothecary from that era interesting, especially some of the herbs used. The names are familiar to me through essential oils and the uses have not changed. This time period was very hard, with epidemics of measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough. Towns were lucky to have their own doctor. When the doctor was out to deliver a baby or to a farm area, the pharmacist would be called on for advise, dispensing medicine, or sometimes stitching a wound. You can tell Ms. Rouser enjoys history and has done an excellent job in her research.

I loved the heroine Maggie Galloway. Being a widow, raising her son by herself, she had to be a strong woman and she was. At first, I had a hard time with Thomas Harper, he seemed weak and a complainer at first. Thomas too had lost his spouse, but he was raising four children and trying to run the apothecary by himself. Even though Thomas and Maggie did not see eye to eye on many things, they found they had a lot in common after all.

I always love when an author is able to weave a faith based message in their story. I found Ms. Rousers story to be a delightful read and I would recommend it.

This is a nice story about a woman who loses her husband and is left to support her child by herself. In this time period it was hard to find a job for a woman. Maggie does have a gift of baking and it pays off win she wins a prize in a baking contest. I love the time period and how the author makes the story come alive.

I thought it was interesting to read about the 1900s and especially about the new pharmacy in town. Maggie's husband used to be a pharmacist so she knows a lot about medicine. She clashes with the new pharmacist in town when her son and Thomas's son have a fight. It was funny that the boys were fighting over whose dad was the best pharmacist. It is hard to imagine that during this time period, aspirin and other drugs were just being introduced. Some people, like Maggie were skeptical of this new medicine practice.

Thomas sure has his hands full with a houseful of kids and a new pharmacy to open. When he becomes very ill, Maggie is thrown into caring for him. Oh my that was an adventure just having her try to be civil to him and try to control his unruly bunch of kids. Having lost his wife has been hard on all of them. The author gives us some great characters who try to outdo Maggie in the baking department and it leads to some sharp words and fun moments.

There are a few surprises and a new person in town that stirs up trouble that makes the story enjoyable. The town faces tragedy while Maggie and Thomas try to work together to overcome the crisis. The new man in town was my least favorite character because he was arrogant and pushy. does make friction between people wherever he goes and kinda thinks he is better than others. Overall a nice story from a time period where new discoveries in medicine were happening and a woman with a dream that she hopes to see happen.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

This was my first time reading a Kathleen Rouser book. I didn't realize "Secrets and Wishes" was the second book in the series. The first book is "Rumors and Promises."

"Secrets and Wishes" is Romantic Christian historical fiction. It takes place in the early 1900s located in a small town in Michigan. Maggie Galloway is a widow trying to raise her son by herself. She is a strong outspoken woman and also a lady. During that time period, it was a man's world so she had to be an outspoken as well as a ladylike too.

Thomas Harper also lost his spouse and is raising four children all while trying to run the apothecary by himself. Thomas and Maggie disagreed on a lot of things, but they also found a lot of things in common. Throughout the novel, Rouser did a great job of weaving in faith base messages without sounding preachy.

Throughout the book, we are taken into the life of Maggie and Thomas and all the events going on in the small town such as a baking contest. There is never a dull moment and unanticipated twists.

I love her writing style. I was never bored or confused. She definitely did her research. It was fun reading a story taken place in Michigan when I live in Michigan. I would love to meet Kathleen Rouser because it would be so much fun writing a script adaption on her story for Hallmark because her locations came to life, the details of the apothecary from that era were incredibly on the nose and interesting. I am fascinated with historical fictions especially when the time period is the 1940s or older. In the 1900s they had to deal with so many epidemics and inventions. In the early 1900s apothecary and medicines being peddled by traveling shows that caused harm at times. I can tell Rouser also loves her history because of the details throughout the book.

I would highly recommend reading this heartwarming series. I look forward to reading more stories set in Stone Creek, Michigan with all the wonderful people in the town.

This story follows the lives of Maggie and Thomas. Maggie, a widow, is raising her son in a cottage on the property of a dear friend. She is opinionated with a short fuse when it comes to things she feels others are being absurd about. Thomas, a recent widower, is raising his four children and trying to start his business in a new town. When their boys get into a fight, Thomas and Maggie face each other for the first time. Their short fuses and heart ache causing an argument to erupt. The story follows as their relationship grows and dwindles as well as all the drama that follows in a small town. When a rich, past boyfriend comes to town Maggie's whole world is turned upside down.

This book had a very sweet ending and very vivid characterization. As a reader, I was able to identify each character very easily. The town was painted in vivid detail. I appreciated the use of old English terms in order to help the reader really identify where the characters were in time. I loved the details used to describe friends, such as Ian and Dr. Moore. The use of dialogue and an omniscient narration really helped me dive in with these characters.

However, the story was completely predictable. There was no suspense or character arc. It wasn't until the final few chapters that Thomas made any change and Maggie's character didn't develop at all. I felt that any foreshadowing or context clues that were given gave away what would happen instead of just adding to the suspense of the story.

I will say, I did love the scenes with the medicine man and his troupe. This was probably the part of the book where I was finally drawn in. I loved reading as Thomas' passion develop and grow until he had an outburst. I enjoyed watching Thomas and Maggie's relationship develop from that point on. Thomas' ability to get out of his comfort zone and help save the town helped to save this book.

Maggie Harper is a well respected widow in Stone Creek and is thrilled to learn that she has earn a place in the Silver Leaf Baking Company’s cookbook with her prize winning cookies. Thomas Harper has just moved to Stone Creek to open a pharmacy, alone in a new town with his four children he finds himself missing his late wife more than ever. When Maggie meets Thomas she is immediately put off by the fact that he does not operate his pharmacy the same way that her late husband ran his. Can Maggie put aside her reservations and help Thomas when tragedy strikes and how will a former love interest play into the entire situation.

Secrets and Wishes is the sequel to Rumors and Promises. It is one of the wonderful books were I feel like I am going back to visit old friends. Maggie is a character I came to love in Rumors and Promises. If you are able to go back to read it , please do. If you cannot then Secrets and Wishes works well as a stand alone novel. Maggie is so easy to love and understand. I can’t say the same thing for all of the men in the novel.Kathleen Rouser, ,the author has done wonderful job bring the world of pharmacy in the early 1900’s to the pages. I love historical novels and this is and great one to read with topics that you don’t see often in Christian Fiction.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Kathleen Rouser is one of my favorite Christian Fiction Authors, so I was excited to be able to read another new book by Kathleen. Secrets and Wishes is the sequel to Rumors and Promises.

Secrets and Wishes has 3 main characters, Maggie Galloway, Thomas Harper and Giles Prescott. Maggie and Thomas are both widows and singled parents living in Michigan. They begin a friendship when their sons are in a fistfight with each other. The friendship flourishes when Maggie has to take care of Thomas when he becomes deathly ill. Maggie is also trying to support herself with a baking business. Along comes a old boyfriend who wants her to come to Chicago to work in his Test Kitchen. All that sounds good to Maggie, but she feels drawn to stay in Michigan with Thomas. What will she decide? How will the love story end? I cannot spoil the ending, as the book is soo good it is a must read!

I really like the time period that this love story took place, in the early 1900's! The way health care was in that time is quite interesting. Also, the fact that when Maggie became a widow she had to be creative in how she would support her family due to the fact that women had a difficult time gaining employment during that time.

Secrets and Wishes is a GREAT stand alone book and I HIGHLY recommend it. Kathleen Rouser is a wonderful author and she proves it once again in this FABULOUS book!

Secrets and wishes is a sequel to Rumors and Promises. While there were times when reading Secrets and Wishes that I wondered what had happened in the lives of the characters before the story took place, I did not feel like I was missing necessary to understand the story.

Maggie is a widow - her husband was a pharmacist and she had helped him in his practice. Thomas is a widower and a pharmacist. When they meet it is like oil and water - they do not get along at all. Yet circumstances push them together. She has a son who is well behaved. He has a daughter and three sons who are undisciplined.

Kathleen Rouser researched the pharmacy field in the early 1900s to ensure the accuracy of the information in the book. She even includes an author’s note at the end to share her research. The ending is not unexpected, however there are twists and turns that make you wonder if you really can guess the ending. Several of the characters grow in their faith as the story progresses.

The book is appropriate for high school and up. I would not hesitate to add it to my k-12 Christian school library.

I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complimentary e- copy of Secrets and Wishes.

Secrets and Wishes is the second book in the Stone Creek Brides series by Kathleen Rouser. It is a nice easy to read historical fiction with touches of clean romance. This is a nice story of widower Thomas, the newly widowed pharmacist that has recently moved to town, widow Maggie and their children. When Thomas needs constant attention, the doctor and minister turn to Maggie for help. The story takes place when aspirin was new and traveling shows were roaming the country selling their medicines.
This is an enjoyable story to read. I enjoyed seeing how Maggie was so devoted to Thomas even when she really did not want to be there. She left her son in the care of others while she cared for Thomas and his children. It was also fun to see the change that came over the children toward Maggie. It was interesting to see how Thomas went about trying to get control of his unruly children and how Maggie felt about it. It was also interesting to read of the changes that took place with the pharmacy field.
This is a fun story to read that I received a complimentary copy of. This is my honest review.

Secrets and Wishes is the second installment in the Stone Creek Brides series. Written by author Kathleen Rouser it may easily be ready as a standalone. This Christian historical romance was entertaining as well as interesting and inspiring.

Set in early 1900s, this is the story of Maggie Galloway. She is a spirited widow raising a young son. It is also the story of Thomas Harper. He is a widower with four children. They both live in the charming little town of Stone Creek, Michigan.

The author has a captivating way of telling a story. It kept me turning page after page until I had finished the novel. Each character is unique and believable, right down to the children. The struggles faced by Maggie and Thomas were realistic. My heart went out to both of them. The author threw in a few twists and turns. Those always make a story fun. I appreciated the strong Christian message.

I highly recommend this beautiful novel. It had me invested within the first few pages. All lovers of historical, Christian, or romance fiction will love stepping back in time into Stone Creek. I give this book a 5 star rating. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but this is my honest opinion.

Secrets and Wishes by Kathleen Rouser is a heartfelt and heart tugging story. It has characters who are fully developed both their good and sometimes their shortcoming too. Still this made them believable and easier the like then if they were simply perfect. Still they relied on the Lord which made them even mor admirable. This romance has a greater plot then the romance that begins to grow between widow Maggie Galloway and widower Thomas Harper. A woman needing to work, disparaging first impressions, single parents, and charlatan medicine sellers.

A true to the times drama and romance with a strong emphasis on trusting in the Lord. Much research I am sure went was done before this book was written. Interesting story with great characters with a natural building up of a romance. A sure pleaser for any reader but especially those of Christian historical fiction.

The publisher Wild Hearts Books provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

A widow, a widower and children are featured in this novel. Both Maggie and Thomas have buried their spouses and in spite of moving to a new location are still grieving. Maggie is raising her son alone and Thomas is raising a daughter and three sons alone. They “cross swords” a few times but also have more in common than either realize. Enter former beau Giles Prescott that tries his best to woo Maggie with his prestige, money and job offer.
1901 is the year and old medicine and medicine shows are the norm. Thomas being a pharmacist is fighting all of this dangerous “medicine”. Whooping cough is overtaking their community. Why must Thomas fight an uphill battle?
It was very easy for me to like these characters, especially Maggie. Given another time and place I think we could’ve been good friends.
My time was not wasted reading this book. I throughly enjoyed it!

Book 2 in author Kathleen Rouser’s Stone Creek Brides series, Secrets and Wishes can be read as a stand alone but reading book one, Rumors and Promises, would help.

Both Maggie and Thomas are widowed parents and we see the struggles that came with that. Secrets and Wishes has several twists and turns, including a tragedy that affects the town’s children. But there is always hope. Both main characters are well developed and seem as if they are real people. I need that in a story!

Rouser gives us a great look into what things could have been like during this time period. Her attention to historical detail made this book quite interesting. And if you enjoy a clean romance then you’ll love Secrets and Wishes. Give it a read!

Kathleen Rouser's Secrets and Wishes takes place at the dawn of the twentieth century. It’s a tender story of two adults dealing with the grief of losing spouses and raising children on their own, a situation not uncommon in any generation.

Maggie Galloway, a baker, and Thomas Harper, a pharmacist, are each searching for a fresh start. While Thomas is the new pharmacist in Stone Creek, MI, Maggie is considering leaving town. These two get off to a rough start and find the road to friendship anything but smooth.

The author has developed multi-dimensional characters and has thoroughly researched of the period in terms of the social norms and medical practices. While it is identified as the sequel to Rumors and Promises. the story stands alone and is as enjoyable as the first book.

Secrets and wishes

This is a historical set in 1901. Maggie is a widow and Thomas is a widower. When they first meet they have a lot of disagreements. She has one son and he has four children. Thomas is trying to make go of it being a pharmacist. So much different in those days.

There is lot of sickness going around and Thomas ends up being one of the worst. Maggie turns out the one caring for him.

One part I loved in the book was the mention of the Kickapoo Indian tribe. That is one that is not mentioned much.

I found the book very enjoyable and entertaining. I need to read more from the author since I definitely enjoyed the writing.

Now that Maggie's brother is married, she is no longer needed to help him manage his household. She is ready to take the next step in her life. Should she explore a new love, rekindle an old flame, or move away and start over entirely? As she ponders her decision, she is involved in the community, helping where she is needed. I enjoyed getting to know feisty, hardworking Maggie. The story was paced well, with believable characters. Fans of historical romance will enjoy their visit to Stone Creek, Michigan, at the turn of the century.

Secrets and Wishes is a sequel to Rumors and Promises, but reads well as a stand-alone novel.

I received an ARC of this book from the author, and a digital version through Celebrate Lit. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser is a really wonderful story of a widow and a widower trying to survive and raise their children. The sparks fly between the two because of differences of how to raise children and how to run a business.

"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser is a fun read.

I recommend"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser if you like clean love stories with a little bit of history mixed in.

How can Maggie found out what God's will is for her, should she nurse Thomas back to health and is her winning the baking contest, a second chance at love with an old beau?

Thomas struggles with how a supposedly loving God could take his wife and leave him with four children.

I received a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Kathleen Rouser has once again written a superb, thought-provoking story which has a strong spiritual theme woven throughout. In Secrets and Wishes, she follows the developing romance of Maggie Galloway and Thomas Harper, an apothecary in 1901 Stone Creek, Michigan, while at the same time keeping you guessing as to the outcome. Historically accurate, the story carries the reader back to a time when the roles of the apothecary included stitching up wounds and handing out minor prescriptions without a doctor's signature. I found the herbs and remedies used at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century intriguing. I was privileged to read an advanced copy of Secrets and Wishes.

Historical Fiction is one of my top favorite genres to read. This book deserves a descent spot on the shelf. Set in the early 1900’s when the old ways and the new modern ways are intermingling together.

Well written tale of second chance romance between a widow/widower both single parents and the healing of grief and finding love again. I loved the characters and how they all got along with each other.

A slow moving story, but sweet romance with a satisfying ending.

How do the each deal with their children..what happens when an old flame come to town and upsets everyone's life in the small community..if you are interested to find out. Read this fun story that will keep you wondering. I enjoyed this story and was given this as a gift. All the words are strictly my own..

Not for me

This story just did not work for me. When I started the book , I did not realize it was a sequel. I did enjoy the first book, so really surprised when I struggled to read this. I didn't think Maggie and Thomas had any chemistry at all. I think the fact that they decided they were " in love", contrived at best. I found myself skimming jus t to get through it.

Kathleen Rouser did a great job bringing two single parents together through difficulties as they struggle with what is best for their children. Also her research proved to be a vital part of the story as she revealed the dangers in the early 19th century of uncontrolled medicines. Interesting read.

A slow moving historical fiction. Plenty of characters with interesting personalities. There were enough twists and turns to keep the listener involved.

The narration was ok, but not exceptional. Lynn Carnefix narrated.
