Author Kelsey Atkins does a wonderful job of pulling you into this story of good versus evil. Follow along as Kiya learns of her destiny and powers she only dreamt of before as her fate unravels. This book had me quickly turning pages in suspense of what is to come and in shock of what the prophecy revealed. You don't want to miss this book!
This is a very good YA story with a great lead character, Kiya, and an excellent theme around light and darkness. Kiya is a teenager who’s a little different who meets an unusual older teenager, Zac who shares a secret with her by taking her to a new world dimension where a group of teenagers and younger boys mount an offence against the creatures of the darkness.
This is the first in a series and reads like it so it’s spends time building up for what will be a longer story. Kiya has a special gift of being able to use ‘light’ to do all sorts of good things which is a powerful analogy for the power of the Holy Spirit within us.
Once the story is set and Kiya makes a decision to explore her gifting more, the pace lifts and races to the inevitable conflict between the light and dark but with a somewhat surprising ending.
Kiya is a great character: gutsy, a bit of a loner but strong and independent with some typical teenage girl hopes and dreams. She perhaps was a little ‘mature’ in some of her responses about the unusualness of her situation but she is well developed and I look forward to seeing how Atkins develops her in the next instalment.
There’s a good interplay between Zac and Atticus, the two leaders of the “Lord of the Flies’ camp and the conflict the latter creates is well managed with a good rationale behind his brooding negativity towards Kiya. Her two side-kicks, Gabe and Cas, are fun and I liked how Atkins was able to show a solid friendship between a boy and a girl without sexual overtones.
The light and darkness theme was well thought out and presented through the story. My only question was the fact that I didn’t sense any great connection with God by any of the characters that made me question its sincerity a little. I hope we see this further explored in the next story.
YA fantasy readers will enjoy this story and I’m looking forward to reading book 2.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Finding the Light by Kelsey Atkins. As this is the first book in a series, there is a lot of character development that takes place, which is great because the author does an excellent job showing you who these people are through experiences in the story rather than overtly telling us.
The plot captures your attention as you find yourself being pulled into this otherworldly experience of Kiya, which I found to be tangible and palpable throughout. The author is smart in how she does this by exposing the reader to a series of contrasting themes that are embedded into the fabric of the plot. Most apparent is the light vs dark dichotomy, which the reader gets intimately acquainted with through the juxtaposition of Kiya’s experiences in the banal world of high school against the fantastic and heavy experiences of Zac’s world. As you get deeper into the story, you find yourself caught up in witnessing an epic battle between opposing ethereal forces but experience it as if you are right there with Kiya as she wrestles with the all-to-familiar struggle between doing what is easy and doing what is right.
You will find yourself captivated by the story through the final chapter, and will need to read it in order to fully understand, but the ending will definitely leave you wanting to read the next book in the series. I eagerly look forward to the continuation of Kiya’s story in the world of Finding the Light.

I haven't read a fantastic book like this since the Percy Jackson series, and I loved that series! It was wonderful to escape into this adventure with such a brave, stubborn, and compassionate female main character. Kiya discovers that she is a Light Keeper, with a power unlike any that her friends have ever seen. And it's that power that is drawing the attention of the darkness to threaten them all. Atkins creates an intriguing world that the young adventurer in our hearts longs to be apart of! Light vs dark and good vs evil. You won't want to miss reading this book. And when you finish it, you will be ready for the next one!
So many great things about this book! I love the strong female protagonist who steps into her legacy unwillingly at first but throughout the course of the story becoming heroic. Atkins very skillfully sets an intense and suspenseful theme that leaves you guessing about what's going to happen next. I wish it wouldn't have ended when it did because I want more NOW! I'm looking forward to more, more, more from this author. If you like YA fiction with heart, brains, and soul, then look no further!
