Murder by Design #3

Once Upon a Ghost

Rate this book
With Bailey Burke’s design and staging business booming- it turns out tangling with a serial killer is the best advertising ever- she has no time to lament her lack of love life, or wonder where her dead friend Ryan’s ghost has gone. She hasn’t seen him in months, but when she finds a body in a home she’s been hired to stage she’s hounded by the dead man’s ghost.

Having been a medium before, this guy is by far the most irritating ghost she’s ever met, with his constant need to talk over her and flick pennies at her head. Without Ryan to guide her, she’s on her own to figure out what the dead man needs from her. On top of all that, cop Jake Marner is back in her life, ostensibly to protect her, but mostly to confuse her as to whether they are dating or not.

Before she can say “Put It Where?” Bailey finds herself immersed in mob dealings, the secret world of male-only sweat baths, and double dealings. When another body turns up, there is no doubt that she’s in over her head… again.

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

“Sammy Salami?” That couldn’t be real. None of this could be real. Maybe Marner was right and I had lost my mind. Because no one should have a nickname that referenced processed meat.

I didn’t need to be insulted by a man with hair on his ears and a belly that rivaled a woman pregnant with triplets at full term.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief and finished my drive home singing along to the Backstreet Boys, a guilty pleasure that brought to mind awkward middle school dances where I had been sporting braces, a denim mini-skirt and Uggs. I hadn’t been a seductress then either.

She gave him a quick kiss and went back to work, giving a laugh that was throaty and mature and sexual. A laugh can sound that way, trust me. And only women over forty know how to do it. I wondered if at thirty-nine a switch would flip and I would magically understand how to be seductive, a genuine femme fatale.

My Review:

I giggle-snorted my way through this cleverly written and delightful amusing conclusion to the weak stomached Bailey’s ghostly murder-solving spree. With this installment, Bailey continued to receive occasional visitations from her friend Ryan but had also picked up the additional spirit of her new client who happened to be a freshly murdered rotund mobster named Cezar who had been unfortunately killed while in his swim trunks. Cezar tortured and blackmailed Bailey into helping him by loudly “caterwauling” off-key to his repertoire of pop divas like Brittany Spears until she finally caved and agreed to assist him in locating his missing body. Her romance with the stud muffin policeman, Jake Marner, was finally on track and he made for a sweet and perfect boyfriend. Jake currently resides on my list of sexy BBF. Written from the first person POV of Bailey, I greatly enjoyed her humorous inner musings and comical descriptions. Erin McCarthy has mad skills.

Once Upon a Ghost is as unique as Erin McCarthy. I'm still trying to figure her out as an author, but boy am I enjoying the experience. It takes a vivid imagination to come up with characters as eccentric as they are lovable. Where else would you find a designing ghost whisperer and her brand of over the top scenarios and haunting clients? Mysteries tend to get too serious and Ms. McCarthy delivers all the intrigue with a hint of light, crazy and fearless fun.

This one was a little better for me, but Bailey still bumbled around. At least she managed to convince Jake that she did indeed see ghosts and that they finally defined their relationship.

I thoroughly enjoyed this conclusion to McCarthy's Murder By Design Series. Bailey Burke is a spunky, likable heroine, and this book once again finds her seeing and interacting with ghosts. This book is fun, filled with quirky characters and plenty of action. This is a lighthearted cozy mystery with a touch of romance.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

this is such a fun book and series.

Bailey is a home stager who can see and talk to ghosts and in this one she is hounded by the man. I mean hounds her.Her snarky ghost BFF ryan is no where to be seen this time and now she really needs him. Too top it off with the cherry her and Jake are in a odd place are they or aren’t they together.

Bailey is fun and quirky just like the book and Erin McCarthy’s writing. The imagination of the author for this series is amazing. This one has a little more twist in it and is more eccentric that the others in this series. The shenanigans she gets into here are hysterical. The schvitz and storage unit are just to name a few.

Jake is a conundrum. He likes Bailey but is having a hard time with things. We do see him go out on the limb in this book. He is the one who tries to ground Bailey but isn’t having much luck.

This is a fun light hearted quirky book as you go on a whodunit with a quirky Bailey, serious Jake and ghosts galore that has you thoroughly entertained and wanting more. I wonder where the series will go now after all that was revealed and can’t to find out.

Another great read! These are just getting better for me. It helps that Bailey finally has someone in on her secret. I was absolutely hating that she had to be so tight lipped.

There was a particularly bothersome ghost that was always popping up at the most inopportune times. He was a jerk in life and an even worse guy in death, but Bailey set him straight and kicked him in the groin... although it did nothing to him.

Even though Bailey is naive, she managed to help solve another crime. I think the ghost in this book may appear a moment in book 4, "How the Ghost Stole Christmas."

I have loved every book in this series, but this one has got to be my favorite.

Bailey and the ghost that follow her have me laugh, hang on tight with fear and love (just with her best friends ghost not all the others), I am truly going to miss waiting for the next ghost to show up and turn Bailey's life upside down and inside out.

This final book in the series sees Bailey with a double crossing ghost following her around and with everything he does it makes me want to punch him in the face, and I could not wait for Bailey to figure out his story so that he would leave.

Book three also gives us Bailey and Jake Marner, which is what totally made this book perfect, I am just very sad that this will be the last book in the series.

Marner just can't get enough of his girl, “you’re lucky I’m hungry,” he said. “Or I’d drag your tempting little butt back to bed.” When his woman is out of it marner likes to bust her chops, “you just talked about how hot I am, how much you like my muscles.” This is the first book I've read by Erin that wasn't New Adult, it was alright I didn't hate it but I didn't love it as much as her other genre.

The third in the series. Is it sad to see Ryan go? He wasn’t around much in this edition. But the ghostly presence that took his place not so much fun. Jake and Bailey finally sort some things out. This continues to be a fun cozy paranormal mystery

Wow that Cezar!! I fluctuated between liking him to downright wanting him to be alive again so he could be turned ghostly again at the end 🤬🤬🤬

Nice progression in Jake and Bailey’s relationship, finally!!

Bailey Burke is back with a new ghost, a murder, her cop boyfriend and, of course, cute shoes.
This was another quick, easy read in the Murder by Design series and I could not put it down!

Erin McCarthy hit another one out of the ball park. I loved this. I loved the suspense of finding out who killed the ghosts. And something always happens to Bailey when she is investigating who did it.

Well I gave it three books but I’m officially done with Erin McCarthy’s Murder by Design series. I enjoyed the first book but the series went downhill from there. While I’ve previously liked Erin McCarthy’s books, I just feel like this series isn’t at the same level as her earlier books. Once again, Bailey is back as a house stager/ghost seer. This time, the ghost is the owner of the lake house she was supposed to staging. She sees his dead body in a chair outside and freaks and calls the cops. When the cops arrive, the body is gone and she realizes the body was actually a ghost. This ghost proceeds to force her by being annoying and singing 90’s pop songs into the world of the mob. Honestly, the mystery of the murder didn’t seem too developed and I couldn’t bring myself to care where or not Bailey figured it out.
On the other hand, at least her relationship with hot cop Jake Marner finally progressed. However, even that couldn’t save this book especially because that relationship wasn’t hashed out very well. The end of the book makes it seem like this is the last book in the series and I am totally okay with that. I felt throughout the series that McCarthy was attempting to write one of those cutesy, funny, mystery series with an inept heroine who manages to solve the mysteries. Bailey, unfortunately, just doesn’t have the humor or likeability of a character like Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson. Rather than read this series, I’d recommend Jones’ series for an enjoyable ghost-seeing book and McCarthy’s True Believers series for something that is more authentically her writing style.

Bailey Burke has managed to stumble her way into trouble again. Ever since Bailey saw the ghost of her best friend appear to her asking for help solving his murder, she has been called upon by others ghost to also help solve their murders. However after she was almost killed by a serial killer, her ghost radar has been dead. But her business has been booming. When she is called upon to stage a lake house to be sold, she finds a dead body in the backyard, only to discover that the ghost are back and Bailey is in trouble again. When her latest client and ghost is a murder crime boss. What kind of trouble will Bailey get into this time? And with Marner be there to save her or is he scared off by the ghosts in her life?

I love the Murder by Design series! I love Bailey's quirkiness and spunk! She is an unlikely hero but is one all the same. These books are well written and humorous. I am very sad to hear that this is the last one planned in the series! I really hope that Ms. McCarthy changes her mind and there are more in the future! I highly recommend that you read all three books in the series if you have not done so already.

Imagine walking into a backyard and seeing a heavyset dude with too much body hair, wearing only a pair of shorts and flip flops, with a hole in his chest and when you call the police? You find out that the person you saw is actually already dead and you're about to deal with your most annoying ghost "client" yet in your bizarre adventures as a reluctant spiritual medium and you will know how Bailey feels.

McCarthy does a great job of blending sarcasm, uptightness, romance, murder, and mystery into one funny book this go around. Ryan makes a short appearance here and there, but Cesar is the ghost du jour, and not a very nice one, either. In fact, I'd rather deal with Phil all over again.

I love the dynamic between Marner and Bailey, especially as he comes to understand that there's more to her than meets the eye. Alyssa cracks me up and I hope to see more of her in future installments in this series.

Steam Level is 1/5. Marner and Bailey take their relationship further, but do it off page.
Language Level is 2/5. There is cussing and some spicy talk, but it did not detract from the overall storyline.

Bailey Burke is back bigger than ever thanks to her stint with a psycho-killer that put her and her business on the front page of the news. Her latest home makeover has her coming face to face with another ghost. Unlike the ghosts of the past, this one is a royal pain in the rear and it hurts that Ryan has gone missing so she has to fend for herself. Will Ryan return? Erin McCarthy uses her trademark wit and humor to complete this series with these quirky yet lovable characters. For fans of Stephanie Plum, this is one series you should give a go as the two women seem to wind up in the oddest situations with their cop boyfriends just pondering how does this keep happening? This is the third book in the series and can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading them in order.
I volunteered to read an arc for a review.

Good grief, how can she be so oblivious to everything? I moved to Cleveland for school, and lived just up the hill from Little Italy. My car was stolen the next day, and my landlord was shocked, because the (alleged!) mobsters there didn't usually allow things like that to happen. I have no idea if that was true at all, but it was her first reaction; so surely someone who has lived her whole life in Cleveland has a vague awareness the Mafia is possibly around. How does this character have no idea?

How do you accidentally walk into a sauna? Or into a walk-in freezer? These doors don't look like regular doors; they are very obvious! And yet, apparently the main character did these things.

She is a sweet, not very bright, character; and I like this idea. But, maybe with a character who has a little more sense.

This is the third book in Erin McCarthy's Murder by Design series. I've really enjoyed reading this series. It is filled with murder, suspense, love and humor.
Bailey Burke doesn't know if her being able to see dead people the last few months is a blessing or a curse. It all started after her best friend Ryan was killed except he's been MIA lately while other ghosts have needed her help finding out what happened to them. All of this has caused her love life to come to a screeching halt since Jake Marner doesn't quite know how to process the fact that his girlfriend not only sees ghosts, but helps them find out how and why they died.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Mobster Ghost!

Not sure if this is the last book of this series - if so, I approve of the ending. However, I really enjoyed reading these books & would really be happy if there were more books to come. Main character Bailey Burke is gullible, yet charming. BF Detective Jake Marner is sexy, protective, but still accepts Bailey for who & what she is. Dead guy, mobster Cezar Wozniak is humorous but deadly creepy. He certainly has a unique way of “persuading “ Bailey to help him. My only question is how does Bailey afford to live? Her previous clients are either dead or killers so I assume they didn’t pay her. The reader doesn’t find out too much about her normal staging business. Again, I hope there are more stories to come.

Cute and quirky

All three books were a light fun read, I kind of thought it was heading to Ryan being her ghost partner in solving crimes and was disappointed when it wasn't. All three books left loose strings that weren't finished in an attempt to be mysterious, like the taxidermy professor who basically confessed to scare her but wasn't the killer or the hints that people didn't like her because Jake was in love with her and she was blind to it but no one said anything, and others. There was the hearing that went no where but was a set up to his escape?, release on a technicality? Even with these issues I enjoyed all three. I was disappointed that Ryan was a bit of a jerk, that almost lost me.

I honestly think this is the worst book of the series. Even if some of the characters are sassy, the story plot and ending lack an interesting plot. I didn't get the point of leaving her ghost friend Ryan in the story if his intervention was a going to be miniscule. Instead of being a nice mystery story, it centers on how the main character is emotionally struggling with the fact that she sees ghosts and to make things move and be "lively" the author always makes her be silly and make the worst choices on how to handle dangerous situations to get the character in trouble and get some action through all three books. I'm quite disappointed as this series had high rating and I thought it would pick up as you read the books but not the case.

Book 3 in the Murder by Design series brings Bailey face to face with another murder and, of course, another ghost. The events in this were a bit slower, but I still found myself laughing and snorting at Bailey's comments. It's good to go through life with humor chasing after you, especially since crime seems to be close by as well.
I am honestly hoping to see more of Bailey and Jake's relationship in the next volumes as I honestly really like them together and they seem to be a good fit.
This series is perfect to listen to for me while I am painting or puzzling. Time flies and I don't even realize when the audiobook is over. This makes me immediately fly to the next book in the series. Murder by Design is perfect if you are in a reading slump and what to get over it fast.

Fun fast read. Third book in the series I suspect is the final, to truly appreciate it you should read the previous books. Bailey's world was turned upside down with death of her friend Ryan, but he reappeared to her in the first book and thus began her seeing and talking to ghosts. In this installment, Bailey finds what she thinks is a dead guy at a house she is supposed to stage for selling and the adventure takes off from there. Marner is more prominent in this book, and we finally have romance with our murder mystery. Lots of humor, good fun, and all is not as it seems, even with the ghosts. Hopefully there might be a future story, or a novella around Bailey.

Eeeep! Another epic mystery paranormal romance that was edgy, funny, sexy, and full of surprises! Erin McCarthy is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. I never thought I could get into mystery romances but I am SO HOOKED on Once Upon A Ghost.

We get a lot of twists, adrenaline inducing action, SIZZLING HOT romance, and tons of mysteries to solve and danger to survive through. It has a good sense of humor and easily made me smile and gasp. Its a great story with a heck of a plot!

Once Upon A Ghost gets a STUPID GOOD FIVE SHOOTING STARS! I am loving these mysteries with romance that just sparks!

I was given this book in exchange for a fair review!
This is the 3rd book in the series. Bailey Burke has a unique gift she can see ghosts. It has gotten her into alot of trouble with her personal life. Bailey wants her budding relationship with Manners to grow but when she told him she can see ghosts especially his deceased partner Ryan its been a little difficult for him.
She thinks life is getting better it's been 3 weeks since she was a ghost until she starts a new job and calls the cops she found a dead man who looked to be murdered.
when the cops arrived and saw no body life got a little tricky.
I love this story and Bailey all the characters are easy to like. i hope this isn't the last one. Don't miss this one!

This is the third book in the series Murder by Design. For me it is the best of the three. I like the story line and the well written plot.
Bailey is a great character and well described. She has a lot going on and is a fun character. She develops nicely through the story. I like the supporting characters Jake and Ryan. They handled the situations when it comes to Bailey very good. Jake has a lot of patience with her.
I like this story because of the laughs it gave me. It is so well written. The mix of mystery, ghosts, quirkiness and humor makes this book an enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a good read for sure. I loved her reactions and how she's just enough of a priss that when she finds herself in situations she's uncomfortable with, she's coming up with stuff on the fly that actually gets her off the hook. This one is a bit different from the last two and I really enjoyed that. Yes, there's still a ghost bugging her, but this one really kept my attention and had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes at times. Great addition to the series. I'm voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book.

This is book 3 in the Murder by Design series and it features Bailey, Jake and Cezar Wozniak. Bailey and Jake are getting closer, which is fantastic! We see a sexier side of Marner, which adds a little bit of spicy angst to this book. Cezar, the ghost, is a real pain in the butt, as most of them are. There are a couple of unexpected twists and turns in this story line.

This series has been full of humor, quick witted people, unrequited feelings, irritating ghosts and finally love. Bravo Erin McCarthy! I loved it!

Once upon a Ghost (Murder by Design # 3) — Erin McCarthy; Narrator: Elizabeth Klett (13 chapters) Dec. 26-27, 2022

Bailey Burke is staging a home and comes across a dead guy…only when the cops show up, there is no guy there. Yep…it’s another ghost. And this one is a VERY BAD guy. And Jake Marner, Bailey’s boyfriend is starting to believe her when she says she can see ghosts.

Short and sweet: I am enjoying this series. The narrating is well done. Listened to at speed 1.8. It was easy to listen to this speed without following along with the book.

Three stars.
