A Soldier’s Farewell… Septimus is sent to Canada in response to murderous raids across the border by uncontrolled American irregulars who are using the War of 1812 as an excuse for banditry. With the prospect of Bonaparte returning to France, he is called back and sent to the Low Countries to command Dutch-Belgic forces whose mission is to secure the coastal routes should the French seek to reconquer their lost territories. Andrew Wareham writes the best historical British military fiction that I've found on Kindle. This series has been particularly entertaining, providing interesting detail about many of the battles of the era with humor and historical accuracy.
What an enjoyable series with the development of some interesting characters in Napoleonic times. I really want a 7th book to see how people develope. Thankyou
The series has had plenty of action, and I like that. However, what I like most is the anachronistic introduction of modern leadership by the hero. Well ahead of his time, but I liked it. Like the old ‘Duffer’s Drift’ tutorial pamphlet that has taught tactical lessons to uncounted young Army cadets, this book teaches about identifying missions, prioritizing efforts, mission-type orders, and how to appropriately supervise without taking execution away from subordinates. And all of this within a good storyline that provides some tension and excitement. Also, provides political context for the action. The hero isn’t perfect, but you understand why. Worth the time.
