One last chance to get things right. Too old for Hollywood at age 29, Lisa Chance leaves her failed acting career and a cheating boyfriend in LA and goes home to Moss Creek, Arizona. The Folly, a stately 1870s mansion in the middle of her hometown, has always drawn Lisa like a magnet. She thought she was done with that place, but now she has the chance to turn it into the coffee shop of her dreams. But when a dead body turns up on the property, she’s the prime suspect in the murder. Can Lisa figure out whodunit, or will she lose her last chance at happiness?
Giving up on her dream of making it big in Hollywood and leaving behind a cheating boyfriend, Lisa returns to her hometown to plan the next phase of her life. Before she has a chance to put her new business in motion, a corpse gets in the way and she's back to square one.
While I was entertained by this book, there was (as always) a few things that didn't flow for me. Many of the relationships contained a tremendous amount of negativity and were hard to take. Her mother, in particular, was completely unsupportive and concerned herself more with her self-image than her only child. Additionally, Lisa ran around like a headless chicken when faced with new woes and didn't resort to appropriate measures to combat the countless problems she encountered. Also, isn't Hollywood over the whole "women have to be in their twenties or else" thing? I did love the manor house, however, and I completely understand Lisa's obsession with it.
In a nutshell, I'd be happy to give book 2 a chance (not a pun!) because there was a lot to like in the introduction to the series.
Although I did enjoy this one, I felt like it was a little simple. Most of the situations seemed a little odd, and the explanations for them were off. There were some good things, but essentially Lisa kind of fumbles around and hits an extraordinary lucky break to clear her name and get what she wants. Like, how did they not think of them earlier?
But there is a cat, and simple Mo is pretty cute. It IS different from other cozies. I'll have to see where this goes, but it's a promising start that might grow better. Three stars.
It's 457 miles from Hollywood, California to Moss Creek, Arizona.
Lisa Chance comes home to Moss Creek after her acting career fails and her boyfriend cheats on her. Upon learning that a historic house is for sale, Lisa decides to pursue her dream of owning a coffeehouse. Things fall apart when she learns that not only was she scammed, but the con man is dead and she is the number one suspect.
This was an enjoyable start to the series. I liked the small town and Lisa's cousin (and partner in crime). Her mom was a bit hard to get to know. She is such a perfectionist and constantly brings up Lisa's downfalls. One of which was spending time in jail for trespassing in the house she just bought. I didn't understand why a teenager would get six months of jail time for trespassing.
The characters are well presented and believable. I particularly liked the town vet. I foresee a bit of romance for Lisa there. The feral cat with kittens was a nice addition.
The victim was not very well liked and numerous people could have killed him. The culprit caught my attention early on but I needed more information for the reason.
I enjoyed this enough that I will revisit Moss Creek to see how Lisa fares with her coffeehouse.
Lisa has returned to her Arizona home town. She had gone to Los Angeles to become an actress. She had traveled with her high school boyfriend, the love of her life. She only got one job as an actress. It was a commercial for an embarrassing prescription. Worst of all, she came home to find the love of her life in bed with her agent.
Now she has come home to the hoped for comfort of her parents and friends. That does not work out as she expected either.
This mystery is a quick read. There is a conman who is murdered and apparently Lisa is the most likely suspect.
I liked this book, but I felt there were things which were not very well defined. For me there was not much question about the villain. I did not understand the mother character. She went from being kind to being cold and distant to her only child. What happened to $50,000 cash? And why were there so many threads to the story?
In short, this is a fun and humorous book. But, for me there were things left dangling.
I have not read any other books by Ms Richards. She creates interesting and entertaining characters. She provides humor in the story. Those are always good things.
I haven't read cozy mysteries for a while, but this one is set in my home state of Arizona, so I thought it was worth checking out. It's about a woman who is in love with a very old house. Okay, so that's maybe not how most people would describe the story, but that's the part that resonated with me.
Lisa Chance has just been betrayed by her long-term boyfriend and her agent, a betrayal that precipitated Lisa's quitting the acting business and L.A. to return to her parents in the town she grew up in. Richards captures the small town vibe very well (I'm guessing, not having lived in a small town myself) where everyone seems to know everyone else's business and keeping up appearances is a very important matter.
Like most cozy mysteries, this one leans heavily on the setting and the secondary characters. Lisa isn't just another pretty face. She's dealing with the repercussions of betrayal and trying to embark on a new dream. She's also trying to come to terms with the fact that her parents aren't the happy couple she wanted them to be. Everyone in this story has a life outside their scene. Even the barn cat has a couple of secrets. There's also a romance aspect to it, not just with Lisa, but with other people in town as well. Like most cozy mysteries, the murders are presented merely as an interesting puzzle, and Richards doesn't dwell on the actual deaths. In fact, one of the dead men's cause of death wasn't even really mentioned, I don't think. Don't expect a detailed paragraph on exactly what the crushed skull looked like. This isn't that sort of murder mystery. If Agatha Christie is as cozy as a tweed coat, this is as cozy as a full-body microfiber snuggie. The author spends more time describing pastries and coffee than she does on the cause of death. It's a good book for those who are allergic to ick.
While it was a charming book, I'm not giving it a full five stars because it didn't go as deeply as I would have liked. If it were maybe 20% longer we would have had more time to develop a relationship between Lisa and Mo, and the cat's secret past could have been hinted at earlier so it didn't seem so random. Some of the plot points happened quickly and were told by the characters instead of being revealed gradually, which makes it easy to read and easy to understand, but not as satisfying. Also, while endemic to this sub-genre, the conceit of "I have to find out who the real murderer is to clear my name" bugs me, since I've read too many real-life police cases to have any confidence that such an undertaking would turn out so well for the would-be investigator. I also prefer a bit more gritty realism. But I suppose if my major complaints are that this was too light-hearted and fast-paced, that will tell you if this book is your cup of tea or not.
Lisa and Dylan left Moss Creek with stars in their eyes, hoping to become celebrities in show business, but like many who dream the dream, reality strikes and Lisa spent most of her time working as a barista in a coffee shop, sometimes serving up coffee for the famous crowd that she hopes to join. That was until she caught her boyfriend Dylan cheating on her. Returning to Moss Creek to nurse a broken heart and to try to start anew, Lisa decided that the one thing she enjoyed and was good at was making coffee and Moss Creek could certainly do with a decent coffee shop.
Putting all her money together with her aunt, Olivia, Lisa puts in an offer to buy The Folly, a large empty house in the middle of town, which she hoped to change into her cafe. It all seemed wonderful until the man who sold it to her turns up dead, right in the drive.
A good start to a new series. This mystery had a good plot and enough red herrings to keep me guessing as to who dunnit. I enjoyed Lisa and her parents as well as the friends who were there to help her. There were also several laugh out loud moments and some cringe worthy ones when her Mum tries to set her up with nice young men.
It's great to discover a new cozy mystery series especially when it ends up being one of your favorites. Estelle Richards' Lisa Chance Cozy Mystery series was a really nice surprise. Lisa Chance leaves her cheating ex-fiance Dylan and goes home to Moss Creek, Arizona. Her best friend from high school, Carly and her husband Gideon live there. Her parents Penny and Lou, Aunt Olivia Baldwin, and cousin Tony the cop live there too. Lisa wants to buy the old Folly building and start a coffee shop. She has money from a tv commercial she stared in and a real estate agent to help her--Brett Lord. But things don't go quite as she planned. She discovered she's been conned, finds a dead man, and then becomes a suspect. Lisa has a suspect list of her own and she begins to do a little investigating. (I loved the cat and kittens that Lisa finds!) This book has a few surprises and interesting characters. I plan on reading future books in this series!
This is my first book to read by this writer and I loved it. Kept your interest from page one. I love Estelle's writing style. Lisa Chance leaves Hollywood behind and an ex and heads home to Moss Creek, Arizona to decided what she wants to do. The Folly mansion is available so she decides to buy it and open up a coffee shop but between being swindled and finding a dead body things aren't going the way she had hoped they would. And on top of all that she is their number one suspect. The book is full of different characters with different stories but it all blends together so well but the murder is still top priority with the writer. Can't wait until the next book comes out in January (can't believe I have to wait that long). With the weather getting colder this is the perfect book to curl up in front of a fireplace with a cup of tea. Happy reading!!
Despite the predictable plot and murder solution, I enjoyed the characters in the first book of a cozy murder mystery series.
SPOILERS AHEAD:Lisa Chance returns to her Arizona hometown after not making it as an actress in Hollywood and after her high school sweetheart cheated on her. It doesn’t take long for her to decide that what makes her happy is brewing coffee, so she’s determined to open a café – in the same old mansion where she was caught trespassing as a kid. And then the man she buys it from is found dead – by her. She has two love interests, a feuding mother and aunt, and a very pregnant feral cat to deal with. A nice change from the other books I’ve been reading. Quick read.
This is the first novel in the Last Chance Mysteries. Last Chance for Murder is the first book in a new cozy mystery series, a series with no graphic sex or violence and no strong language. Lisa Chance has given up on stardom in LA and returned home to Arizona, only to find herself charged with murder. Will she be able to figure out who the guilty person is before she spends the rest of her days locked away? "This is a brilliant read ... well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with and wonderful world building. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation
This is my first book by the author and I liked it.
After catching her douche ex-fiance in bed with her agent, she moves back home from LA. With the money earned from her one commercial going national, she decides to purchase an old, historic building on main street, the Folly. With her Aunt as a business partner, she plans to open a coffee shop, but gets derailed when she finds the seller dead on her new driveway. After learning he is a conman who stole her money, and she isn't the proud owner of her dream building, she also learns she is the main suspect in the murder. Her new goal is to solve the murder, clear her name, and if she is lucky, recover her investment money. All without getting herself killed in the process.
Last Chance For Murder is well-written with few grammatical errors to distract one from the story. Lisa is very immature for being 29 years old and having lived and worked in the Hollywood scene, but that’s just the way she is, and we have to take her as she is. After leaving Hollywood, Lisa returns to her home town, only to discover a murder and then have to solve the crime in order to clear her name as a suspect. There were a few quirks in the story that made me ask myself, “Wait... what happened here?” However, overlooking the quirks, I enjoyed this book and would recommend this to all as a comfortable cozy mystery.
Lisa Chance has given up on trying to break into Hollywood as an actress so she returns to her home town with her tail between her legs.
She had worked for many years as a barista in Los Angeles and so she decides to start up her own cafe shop. In Los Angeles she had made ONE commercial for which she was receiving royalties. So Lisa decides to use that money to open up her own cafe in the old homestead of one of the founding families of that town.
Turns out that man who supposedly sold Lisa that old house was a con man and when he was later found dead, Lisa is the only suspect. So she sets out to prove her innocence and to maybe get her money back.
Lisa and her fiancé broke up so she has come back home. She is suspected in a murder because she is the one who found the body and has no alibi. She begins her own investigation to clear herself.
Lisa has dreams of buying The Folly and turn it into a coffee shop. She partners with her Aunt Olivia and is happy until trouble hits her from multiple directions. Lisa is determined to find out who the killer is. There are plenty of suspects but they claim to have alibis leaving Lisa as the only one.
This book has lots of twists and turns which keeps Lisa on her toes and kept me reading to find out who the culprit was.
Poor Lisa Chance comes home to Moss Creek to her mom and dads house after finding her fiance in bed with their agent. She is kind of at loose ends and doesn't know what she is going to do with herself until the ex calls to tell her she has a BIG check from doing a commercial and her dream of opening a coffee shop in her favorite place called "The Folly" occurs. Problems start when the man she bought the place from is found dead in front of the house. Things continue to go even worse for her until the end of the story. This was a type of story to read when you are having a hard day and then yours doesn't look so bad.
Lisa’s life is in shambles. Her career, her relationship… and now she finds herself back in her home town with her hard-to-please mother. Just when things seem to take shape, Lisa finds a dead body. And Lisa is the main suspect! It was a good mystery. An intriguing case. And a little bit of romance! Pleasant to read. Some quirky bits of humor in there. I loved it! Only thing:
***minor spoiler alert***
why the lawyer? I can think of a reason, but it’s nice to have that in the book instead of just in my head. And I would love the recipe for the Good Morning Muffins!
Fun set up for a cozy series with coffee shop. Lisa comes home after years in LA chasing the acting dream. Now she just wants to put that behind her and open a coffee shop that makes everyone feel at home. Too bad the conman sho sold her the building ended up dead on the grounds.
In order to clear her name Lisa must become reacquainted with her home town before the killer comes after her.
Not bad for a first in series. Definitely enough to interest me to continue on. Solid cozy.
There were a few things that bothered me in the plot. Really? would a teenager get 6 months in jail for trespass? and her 'friends' let her take the rap? There was a timeline issue - a recovery meeting between 11pm - 1am used as an alibi. Must have been a rocking good meeting going that late. The whole sale transaction was iffy and I find it incomprehensible that such a deal would go through. And why did real estate agent mother not check it? Received as a complimentary copy from the author in return for an honest review.
I liked Lisa and her family, especially how different it is. I loved the cat and her kittens who were enchanting. Lisa returns home after spending years trying to make it as a film actress. This was after finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. Lisa has sworn off men and wants to open a coffee shop. Murder rears it's ugly head and Lisa is plunged into trouble. I'm looking forward to following Lisa's further adventures.
Last Chance for Murder(Lisa Chance Cozy Mysteries Book 1)
Cute mystery with a touch of everything in it. You get involved in Lisa's life and hope everything works out for her and her business. You can see the personal problems she has trying to please everyone and still try to get her business off the ground while trying to prove she didn't kill the conman who took her money. Nice story
This is a very cool cozy mystery. You might guess who the perp is right off the bat. But maybe not. There are a few good clues for a person who reads a lot of cozy mysteries. What I did like about the ending was that the book didn't end when you found out who did the killing. The author finished the story without leaving you wondering what happened to Lisa. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
I truly enjoyed reading Last Chance for Murder! It had some great characters and the fact that it was a clean mystery made it that much better! I’ve enjoyed mysteries since I was a kid but it can be so hard to find adult mysteries that aren’t full of a bunch of garbage. Thank you Estelle Richards for writing a fun, cozy, clean mystery. I can’t wait to read more!
I received this book as a freebie in return for an honest review. I enjoyed the story in this book, but at times got a bit frustrated. I thought that the main character, Lisa, was very likeable, but at times quite annoying. I'm glad the story worked out in the end. I had hoped that some characters would be explained a little bit more eg the lawyer - was he bogus or just dodgy? Anyway, overall I did enjoy the story and will read more of the in the future.
I really this book. I always try to read a book that looks like it might have a cat 🐱in it and this one didn't disappoint. This was my first book by this author but I know it won't be my last. I enjoyed all the characters and am hoping this is a series that continues for a while.
I have recently begun reading cozyies, and this one is a winner!
With our current trying situation here in America I just don't have the stomach for grittier (or dystopian) reads. This book was perfectly keyed for my need for interesting characters, a good plot, kittens, and a fast paced story. I have already purchased the second book in this series.
Ridiculous story with over the top cartoon characters, so exaggerated as to be humorous. Maybe a 10 year old might like it, if they want to read something with no depth or qualify. I skimmed the last half just to find out who the killer was and then deleted it from my library.
The book is well written and character developent is good. But I thought Lisa was a little dense when figuring out she was being conned. Actually I thought most people would have figured out quite a few things if they were In her shoes. All in all I did enjoy the story. The writer has great potential.
