After facing impossible odds and reclaiming Excalibur, Winnie Durham seeks the Lady of the Lake to return the talisman. But the Lady has other plans.

“Rise, Guinevere, Queen of Avalon, and take back your blade,” the Lady said. “The time has not yet come for you to return Excalibur. There is more to be done, more for you to do.”

Book 4 in the series starts with the Rebel Faction, led by Winnie, thinking that they have outed Nils Kane, and have a potential victory for the Chanter community. Initially things seem to be going well, with protests, interviews in which Winnie provides evidence of how Kane is a Chanter, and tried to kill her, all whilst building her own movement.
However, they could not be further from the truth, as Kane has been preparing for this exact predicament for some time, and we see the introduction of General Couch. The General has been strategically placed by Kane so that he can take control of all of the military assets, and through Kane all of the Red Legs as well, then, using these, the General quickly takes control of key assets, power, water, communications, so that Kane controls not only everything that is seen and heard, but all of the city’s major needs as well.
Whilst Winnie is giving an interview, her most damning one yet, Kane strikes, and cities across the Eastern seaboard are all taken over by Kane’s forces in a matter of hours.
Winnie and the Rebels begin what is a long and hard rebellion against Kane, to try and remove him from power, but what they don’t understand is that Kane is in league with a darker power, one that has been around for as long as the Fae. Kane is directly in league with the Fell, and is drawing on its powers, as well as the abilities it can provide.
As the rebellion heats up, and Kane’s forces are getting outwitted, and outplayed, Kane starts to unleash the power of the Fell, and he starts to create and push Garbarians, creatures of dark magic, that have taken a human and warped them into a hideous monster of unspeakable power.
Stolen Destiny is an intriguing story, as it sees Kane, who believes that Winnie has stolen his ‘Destiny’ throwing everything he can against her, and slowly sinking further into darkness, whilst at the same time, Winnie, who is trying to fight against Kane, is in a way, avoiding her ‘Destiny’, and is rallying those of the light around her. It is fascinating from the Arthurian Legend point of view just all the little easter eggs that are in this story, and provides a wonderful additional edge to the story as it unfolds. This series has a wonderful streak of Arthurian Legend running through it, with references to the Fae, the Lady of the Lake, Excalibur, Merlin, and the Knights of the round table just for starters, but as stated, there are some great easter eggs for fans.
The true power of this story though comes from its Characters, not just Winnie and Kane, but those around them as well. General Couch is brilliant as the loyal military man, initially believing he is doing the right thing and standing by ‘The Director’ against those he sees as a security threat, but as things happen, you can see him starting to realise that he is trapped, more and more uneasy with the decisions being made. Surrounding Winnie are an incredible array of characters, Victor, her loyal Knight, Tris, her friend, Danny who has stuck with her since the start, and the addition of Cricket, Kripke, Garraldi, Maria as well as the children Jacob and Fiona. One of the really intriguing people in Stolen Destiny is Elaine, Winnie’s Mum though, having gone from the arthritis ridden person who couldn’t cope without medication, to someone who is now able to cast, and being a valuable confident to Winnie, not to mention, an incredible teacher to other Chanters.
I don’t want to give spoilers away, but I will say, that as events unfold, this book becomes a vicious conflict between Kane’s forces and Winnie’s Rebels as the victory that Winnie thought she had won in Book 3 quickly evaporates into all out war. This is a book in which you don’t want to get attached to any main characters, as it becomes beyond brutal, but I will say, that that the final chapter of this book is one of the few books I have read that has given me chills at it was so well written, so good, I went back, and read it again.
The world-building has been exceptional in this series, but in this book, Davis steps it up to a whole new level, as you not only feel each blow of the conflict, but the repercussions that it is having on those involved and the land they live on. Again, the descriptive detail in the final chapter of the book is so stunning, it sends shivers down your spine and leaves you breathless. Stolen Destiny is by far the best in what has been an Epic Series (I’m still in awe at of this book, and it isn’t even the last book??) and I can’t wait to read book 5!) If you love Urban Fantasy, especially with a good twist of Arthurian Legend, then this is something not to be missed!!

We are starting to approach the last book in this series (I think there are going to be five), but this is the fourth book in the series and pretty much starts where the previous one ended. Winnie has the artifact, but she doesn’t know what to do with it. The things she can do with magic are increasing, but Kane’s is increasing as well. In between trying to keep from being captured and trying to get Kane, she has to move all her compatriots to a more secure location. But, how will she evade someone who has a new partner more evil than anyone realizes? I can’t believe how each book gets better and better. Winnie is getting so much more mature, and I made no secret of the fact that her immaturity bothered me a little, and I love how her character has grown. Kane has become even more evil than he started, and the reason for that is fascinating. I love how the plot is getting more complex and interesting. To intrigue readers, events at the end of the book were heart-breaking, and the very end was shocking; who saw that coming?!? As before, but even more, I can’t wait to see what the author has planned next. Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.

“Rise, Guinevere, Queen of Avalon, and take back your blade,” the Lady said. “The time has not yet come for you to return Excalibur. There is more to be done, more for you to do.”

With a hook like that in the kindle blurb you just know this book was going to be hard to resist. I didn't even try, and am happy I didn't. We get to see lead Winnie nature even more both emotionally (thank Heaven) and in her magical abilities. Bad guy Kane is growing too and his motivations are becoming increasingly clear. You do need to have read the prior books in the series before this one but doing so will be oh so very worthwhile.

Highly recommended.

The story has a strong tension throughout the whole book. When you'd think it's over, a new turn comes. Very exciting from the beginning till the end. Winnie and Kane grow into new directions, a lot of is at stake. The ending makes you curious, what more can follow.

I received the book as an ARC for an honest review.
