Rate this book
An EMP has rendered the United States a country without power, communications, transportation, or basic infrastructure. Millions of Americans are left to fend for themselves, struggling to survive in the harsh elements of winter. But even more dangerous than the weather, or the terrorists roaming the country, could be each other. In a world without power, there are those that seek to take advantage of the situation, and those that fight to improve the situation of others. Captain Kate Holloway hopes that she finds the latter.

I loved it!

This story was full of hardship and terror followed by hope. Great characters that we're like real people. Just some average people struggling against a world gone wrong.

Enjoyable

All and all a pretty good read. I hated that Mark had to die and it was pretty obvious that the National Guard would show up to save the day. But it was a lot better than some I have read or started to read. Keep up the good work.

Obsessive and riveting!

From the very first page of the first of these books I was hooked. Constant tension and suspense and rich characters. Highly recommend! Start from the beginning (volume 0).

Stayed up late finishing this one

Very intense plot packed into a page turning quick read. Some parts felt a little bit far fetched, yet it didn't take away from how interested I was to find out what would happen next. I will look for more books by this author.

Books 1 & 2 Should Be All One Book

Combined, Books 1 & 2 form one complete story of courage, sacrifice, perseverance and eventual triumph of good over evil in a post-apocalyptic world. I was not pleased with the abrupt ending of Book 1 of this series, but found the story intriguing enough to take a chance on Book 2. I'm glad I did as Book 2 really pulled it all together. Neither Book 1 nor Book 2 can really stand alone as its own complete novel, and in my opinion should be reworked into a single book. My issues with the treatment of the ten foot blizzard in Book 1 continued to be irksome in Book 2. It feels as if the author has never personally dealt with large volumes of snow, leaving the time frames and descriptions of the effort required to deal with the snow feeling very off from reality. For example: digging down through ten feet of snow and then into the frozen ground to bury multiple people is a Herculean task, but the book makes it seem like it was no problem. Additionally, people are able to quickly dig themselves free of snow that is deeper than the doors they are escaping out of. Are they shoveling all the snow into the buildings? Do these buildings only have doors that open in? Also sometimes the writer writes as if the snow isn't ten feet deep at all. The inconsistency and inaccuracies were very distracting for me.

Book Three

While I greatly enjoyed the characters in this series, especially Rodney and his evolvement, in many ways I felt like this book somehow lacked that 'I can't wait to see what happens next" factor. I appreciate the way there were no loose ends and the way things ended was well done, I just felt there was a lack of intensity that seemed more prevalent in earlier books. Overall though a good series worth taking the time to read.

Great book

One of the great ones. I really felt the emotional pain Kate experienced in this book. That’s the sign of a great story teller. I’m looking forward to more from this author.

Almost there.

I enjoyed this series. For a starting author he did well. However James could benefit from some real world training in firearms and few other disciplines. Over all a good read.

A well written final book of the trilogy. The suspense was kept right to the end, especially focused around Dennis.
My only gripe (and it's a small one) was the lack of storyline around the terrorists. Would have liked that aspect to been explored. Still, a great read.

Good story

Good story. This boom finished up where the first one started. The characters are believable. I am glad this second book came out so soon after I finished the first one.

A great final book to the series. Plenty of action and a good bond to the characters, Rodney and Kate in particular.

Interesting idea and the characters held my interest. I enjoy disaster movies and this one filled the ticket.
