“The weight of the crown sitting atop her head was heavier than she had anticipated.”

Dear Jennifer Anne Davis,

You are the reason I will fail my upcoming exams.Instead of studying,I spent the entire day reading your beautiful book and daydreaming about a brooding prince and swooning over a heartwarming romance and plotting to take back a kingdom. And after I finish this review,I'm going to read the last instalment of this wonderful series. You've destroyed me.

Sincerely,
A law student that doesn't study law

In case you're wondering why ЯED is way more interesting and engrossing than law textbooks, allow me to enlighten you:

The story
Rema was saved from execution by the rebels that threaten to overthrow the cruel king and his sons and restore the former royal line.Still unaware of her heritage, she learns how to defend herself and wonders whether she can trust these people who also keep secrets from her, while her heart aches from the belief that Darmik never cared about her.Meanwhile Darmik searches for the rebels' combound and fights an inner battle which will result in betraying his family or betraying his heart and his people. When Rema and Darmik cross paths again, when secrets finally come to light, everything will change.
“It's time to fix our wrongs and help this kingdom. You are the only hope we have.”

The characters
“Dreaming no longer held the escape it once did.Instead of beauty and adventure, the darkness was now filled with evil, violence and betrayal.”

While the first half of the book was rather slow,it was so full of character development that set the foundations for a thrilling second half!We witnessed Rema turning from a naive, helpless and trusting girl into a strong, proud woman who isn't afraid of speaking her mind and doesn't hesitate to use her power to accomplish her goals. She becomes politically aware, she embraces her destiny despite being scared and although everyone had been lying to her she didn't hold a grudge and we were spared the unnecessary drama. But war also raged inside of Darmik. He was torn between what he had to do and what he wanted to do,he was sick of killing without a reason and he knew that his family was not suitable to rule, but he couldn't ignore that they shared the same blood.Even though he wasn't certain of Rema's intentions,he was guided by a genuine need to protect her and eventually he stopped fighting his feelings for her and embraced them.I loved him in the first book, but now I can say for sure that my heart belongs to him unconditionally. There were also strong friendships,Neco's loyalty was touching and so was Rema's devotion to Vesha.Lennek was still a sick, sick bastard and (I never thought I'd say this but) this guy

has some very creative ideas I'd want to apply on the horrible prince. The was also Savenek (for a few pages I was terrified we'd be introduced to a love triangle and God help me those pages were excruciating) who could not face rejection with dignity and he made me so angry that this

would be my reaction if I ever met him.You selfish, pathetic little brat!

The romance
“All Darmik's aches and pains vanished, and all he could see, smell, and think of was Rema.”

Despite the time they spent apart and the doubts,Rema and Darmik found their way back to each other, they healed their wounds and put their trust in their powerful and consuming love that defied friends, family and enemies.Their scenes were so emotional, sweet and heated that I could barely breathe and the smile now plastered on my face is their doing.Even though it killed me to back off Darmik (because we all know he would pick me),I ship them with all my heart!

Conclusion
I didn't focus on the plot because you'll have to find out what happened for yourselves, but rest assured that since Rema learned the truth the story became fast-paced and breath-taking and I couldn't help but bite my nails and gasp with shock at the end because there is a horrible cliffhanger!True Reign is a series that definitely deserves more attention and if you decide to give it a try,you will not regret it!

This is the second book in the True Reign series.

Book 1 left off on a good cliffy. I was excited to get into this one and jump into all the action. However it took me a good 50% of the book before I got into anything. It took me about three weeks to read the first half of the book.

The first half was really boring, drawn out and very detailed. I was questioning the reason for everything. I get it. Rema has to get to know her area and Darmik has to find Rema, but I think it could have all been explained within the first 30% of the book.

It’s a pet peeve of mine when the two main characters are separated in the second book of any series, because it happens a lot.

The book gets way better when a new interests comes to play and I found the story line very cute. I still have my concerns with Darmik. The guy left Rema in the dungeon for crying out loud. I’m not sure if he’s redeemable, let’s just say he has to try mega hard.

The second half of the book is awesome. There’s action, romantic, drama and plenty of angst. I liked reading all of this. I liked the rebels getting ready for battle and I’m prepared for the King to get what’s coming to him!

I really enjoy this series and I’m ready to dive into the final book.

What another amazing book by Davis!! I love this series to pieces and am so glad I decided to pick up the first book. It captivated me and took my breath away. Davis's writing and even pacing was spectacular and such a thrilling ride of ups and downs!

The characters were so awesome, I instantly connected with Rema from the first book. And I really don't know why because in she wasn't my normal protagonist. In the first book she wasn't a bad-ass chick on a mission, she was a big sweet softy. Naive and unaware of the reality of the world around her, but yet still a feisty, determined, strong willed, and all around good person. So I guess all those qualities allowed me see the fierce fighter inside Rema.

But in this book, Rema was the opposite of her soft demeanor from book one. She was a girl who went through something that changed her. Unwilling to be the trusting, sweet, naive girl she once was, but still unsure of what her role is and where her life was heading, and if she ultimately had it within her to fight back. But by the end of this book she built herself up to the understanding of what she needed to be: A girl on a mission, with a vendetta to seek justice for her family and all the ones in her kingdom who have been wronged and suffered at the hands of the king and is evil son Prince Lennek. And I loved watching her tremendous character growth from book one. And how she took the injustice done on herself, and turned it into a beacon of will and determination to see all the wrongs done to those on the island righted, and as a path to reclaiming the kingdom and ending all the suffering!

And Darmik was another great character that I just loved! Like Rema, I instantly connected with him also. And though he was the son of the evil king, and also the commander ruling the kings army, and leader of the ones causing the people suffering, I still seen that he was a good person underneath his preside. But was just mislead by his desires of wanting to be apart of his family that he's always been neglected from. And I think that blindsided him to the actual wrongs he was inflicting on his people by doing the kings bidding. But in this book Darmik was battling with what was right and what was wrong, and Rema was the turning point for him. An eye opener for all the wrongs that he's been causing on the Island for a long time. And he ultimately turned his allegiances to the rebels to fight against his father. And that just further proved I was right for putting my faith into his character. ;)

THE PLOT

REMA:

Barely escaped her public execution, Rema is now coping and trying to understand who saved her and why. She was rescued by rebel forces, the same rebel forces that king Barjon and the man she's come to care for, Prince Darmik are hunting down and eliminating one by one. Unsure of what's going on and who can be trusted, Rema has no choice but to remain at the rebels fortress, because she's now a wanted woman all over the Kingdom, and their out for blood—her blood.

Crown Prince Lennek and the evil king want the noose around Rema's neck so badly she can taste it. But thanks to the rebels who rescued her, she was able to escape with her life, at least for the time being. But the question still remains why did these rebels help her, and what do they ultimately want from her?

Allied with the rebels, Rema trains daily, building her strength and learning the skill to protect herself when the kings army closes-in. But within the rebel fortress, Rema finds answers she didn't even know their were questions too. She was saved for a reason, a very good reason at that. And the rebels want her to commit to their cause not because she's another able body, but because she is The Key to the corrupt kingdoms undoing. She's the only one able to bring the kingdom to it's knees, and then rebuild it beyond it's once glory...

DARMIK:

Shunned by his father, the King of Greenwood Island, tortured by his brother, the Crown Prince, and betrayed by the girl he's fallen in love with. All that and Darmik is barley holding onto his sanity. But one thing that he does have above all else is his army. Commander and loyal leader to his solders, Darmik must find the rebels responsible for inciting the spark of rebellion in the hearts of his people. He must find the ones he secretly appreciates for saving Rema from her demise that fateful day of her failed execution. But most important, he must find the truth of Rema's true heritage, and if she knows who she really is, and how much power she holds, if she chooses to wield it...

But one things for certain, Darmik knows his people have been mistreated. He knows his father is turning him into a monster—making him do evil things to his kingdom. He knows when his brother Lennek becomes ruler of Greenwood Island, he will become even more vindictive and evil then his father, and he will make everyone under his rule pay, simply because he can. And Darmik knows he cannot let that happen, but is uncertain what he should do about it...

But finding Rema will come at the ultimate price...

His father and brother want Rema's head on a stick, but even worse, the Emperor has gotten news of Rema's heritage, and has sent in his own reinforcements, and their hunting for the kill. He knows Rema betrayed him by not telling him who she really was, but is that betrayal really worth standing by and watching her be murdered? But the more he digs deeper, the more he starts to think that maybe she hasn't betrayed him, maybe she's unaware of who's blood pulses through her veins. And then the realization that he may of just lost everything he loves, for nothing.

So now the question remains...

Is Darmik willing to fight for Rema, and by fighting for her, is he willing to take on her cause—a cause that just may bring the end of the king's tyranny, and the kingdom to it's rightful place?

Yes, YES, YESSSSS!!!! The RED was a fantastic sequel that I just loved! With action and adventure, twist and turns, allegiances and betrayals, obedience and rebellion, evil and benevolent, and a romance so bitter sweet, that it will literally be the last hope of saving a kingdom...

Overall, RED was so awesome, with just the right amount of everything I love! This series has quickly become one of my all time favorites, and these characters will always hold a dear place in my heart! And the author is writing a spin-off series with Rema and Darmik's daughter, the future empress as the main protagonist. And I CAN'T WAIT to jump back into this EPIC world. If you enjoy this type of genre with an awesome cast of charters, and plenty of action and adventure, with betrayals and defiance, and a romance so sweet, then you should definitely check out this series!

In the every changing world of young adult literature, it is truly refreshing to read a book that is meant for the YA audience in content being clean, appropriate and highly entertaining, yet it is a fantastic read for adults as well. So often I read a so called YA book and I exclude it from my own children's shelf (ages 17, 15 and 12), but with The Key and Red, there was no need for censorship. Jennifer Anne Davis creates a chivalrous world of intrigue, deception and a rebellious uprising surrounding a tumultuous monarchy ensconced on an island. If that wasn't enough, the mountainous rebel "complex" is the kind of literary landscape I wish were real so I could put it on my travel intinerary.

The story of Rema and Darmick continues right where The Key left off; in other words, my heart was pounding out of my chest with the conclusion to the dramatic cliff hanger I've been waiting for. I love the relationship between Rema and Darmick, but I also liked the complexity of Savenick and I think he adds a lot to the story, certainly he adds some excitement. I must say, the drama didn't end with the opening scene, but continues with a page turning thrill ride until the conclusion...another cliffhanger? Yes! I. for one, love them and Davis is a master at leaving the reader grinning with satisfaction one second and gasping in shock the next. A pretty perfection combination, I think, which is why I'll be first in line to buy book three AND I'll be recommending this series to all of my friends, young and old alike.

I am loving this series!

Rema is miraculously saved from execution. The rebels cart her off to their secret fortress to recover from her injuries. Darmik is busy tracking them, and her. He is conflicted between his obligations to his family to find the rebels and destroy them and his love for Rema.

This series has surprised me. There is no magic or superpowers or supernatural beings. It's just a story about a girl living in a dystopian society that could make things better by just embracing who she is. I am really enjoying it.

This series is mindblowingly good.

Okay, so Red picks up right where The Key left off. Just so you know I was praying to baby jesus about that damn cliffhanger until I got to this book. OMG I'm so happy with the beginning though. It was so freaking intense that I was sweating so much from being nervous.

The one thing that I'm not happy with is Rema. Like why did it take her so long for her to figure out who the hell she was?!? Well, she didn't even figure it out.. someone had to spell it out for her. It was driving me nuts and I was so frustrated with her not piecing the clues together. Then to just frustrate me more, she just automatically accepts her new position and lifestyle. I'm sorry - but what? First it takes you like 84 years to learn about this whole thing.. and then like .25 milliseconds to just accept it?

Other than that, I loved this book. I loved it so freaking much that I can't wait to read the third book. The romance part was so good - even though it "tried" to hint at a damn love triangle. This book definitely had some flaws but it was easily enjoyable and definitely a page turner.

RED is an outstanding sequel to The Key where we delve deeper into the mystery, lay claim to the heart of love, and step forward into a destiny birthed from dreams. We not only see Rema transform into the captivating princess that she was born to be, but we also begin to catch glimpses of the strong and compassionate queen that her people so desperately need. Prince Darmik continues to prove why he is worthy to hold Rema’s heart and her hand as he bravely stands against his family in order to put her on the throne. Granting us further admission into her deadly and beautiful world, Jennifer Anne Davis continues to weave this breathtaking epic adventure of quiet strength, undying hope, and relentless love.

Rema has become so much more than just a simple merchant’s niece. She has proven that she has an inner strength that even she was not aware of which has helped her to overcome horrendous circumstances. Even amidst her doubts, she knows that she has found a tender and passionately love with Darmik, and in trying to keep her heart alive, she holds onto a tiny hope that what they briefly shared is still alive and will come back to her. Her life has become something that is far beyond even her own dreams could create. Pushing ever onward, she searches for where she belongs while desperately wondering what her future holds in store.

I continue to marvel at the woman that Rema is becoming. She finds a strength that has yet to fail her, a determination that knows no bounds, and a heart that longs to hold and care for her people. As she learns of the real plight of her people, she feels an impending revelation of who she really is. Her heart will not allow her to become anything less than who she was born to be. She feels the heavy mantel of her destiny as it begins to fall upon her small shoulders, and she draws strength from her newfound friends to help her carry this majestic burden. This amazing character is just beginning to blossom before our eyes, and I eagerly await the presentation of the full bloom of this wild rose.

Darmik continues to surprise me as he begins to allow himself to finally see his people and his kingdom through the eyes of his heart. Almost too late, he realizes the pain and turmoil that his people are forced to endure in the name of comfort and indulgence for his father and brother. His determination to do whatever he can to right all of the terrible wrongs that he has seen and done forces him to seek out Rema and the rebels to join with them. After his heart and mind have given up their fight, he gives in and allows himself to completely open his heart to Rema proclaiming his love and devotion to her. He knows that time and victory may not be on their side, and he desires to embrace the sweet and tender love that they share before he loses this last ray of hope in his life.

This story just keeps getting better and better, and I love absolutely everything about it! Fantasy has always had a special place in my heart because in those stories you can truly follow your heart and there is no limit to the possibilities. I enjoy the fantastic rush of hope that surges through the pages of this story even when it is being beat down and smothered. It will not easily die because where there is still life there is hope. The hope that lives in our heart far longer than it should is not logical for the heart is not controlled by the mind. The mind has no power over it, and so it will continue to live and flourish of its own will. I pray that you allow the hope in your heart to flourish no matter what you are going through. Your circumstances do not define who you you. Only you can define who you are.

I liked this book, but not a lot. I give it a low 4 stars.

I really liked all of the chances for commentary I had with this book though. I don't think I've ever added so many updates. I kind of wish I was buddy reading this with someone, because this series would be so fun to talk about with someone else. But my reading habits are way too weird for that at the moment.

Anyways, I think that's all I had to say. I'll be starting the final book in the series next, and I'm hoping that the story improves!

It was a very, very good book, but I pretty much knocked off a whole star because of Savenek.

1) It was an annoying love triangle.
2) Savenek went from totally ignoring Rema to being like OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MARRY ME.
3) Then two minutes later he turned into a sexist pig, being all like, "Rema can't be queen! She's just a woman! She doesn't know anything! ...oh, but Rema, I still love you... will you still marry me?" Fuck right off, Savenek.

I think it mostly annoyed me that Rema never seemed that bothered by Savenek's annoying, horrible attitude with regards to her being queen. I wanted her to call him out, tell him to STFU or else. She just let him talk shit about her right in front of her face and deliberately ignore her orders.

Dare I say it? I just love Jennifer Anne Davis. Her books are just so much fun, action packed, fast paced with bedazzling romances and wonderful characters. Having said that, this series feels slightly less mature than the Knights of the Realm series.

Plot:
Sentenced to be executed.

Betrayed. Alone.

Hanged on the gallows.

Rema thought her life was over, but she was wrong.

Saved by a rebel force she’d only ever heard rumors about, Rema finds herself in a forbidden place. She is finally safe—free from the king and Prince Lennek. But not everything is as it seems at the rebel fortress. Secrets are whispered, and loyalties are tested. Once Rema uncovers the truth of her heritage, will she flee? Or will she ascend to the throne, taking on the responsibility of an entire kingdom?

Now that Darmik knows Rema’s true identity, he’s on a quest to save her. But when an Emperion assassin arrives on Greenwood Island, Darmik knows he doesn’t have very long to find her. In a deadly game with high stakes, will Darmik remain loyal to his family? Or will he break away and join the rebels?

Kingdoms rise and fall.

Heroes are born and made.

But one thing remains the same—love conquers all.

This book especially had the feel of a teenage drama at times. I felt that too much attention went to the romances and not enough to the actual plot at times. Don't get me wrong, I still loved. Dialogues and chemistry between characters are flawless in this book even though at times certain events happening between characters felt petty and childish. I would've loved a more mature approach but I get that it might not be fitting for this series seeing as the characters are almost all so young.

At times the book felt a little slow and at times it felt rushed and hurried. The balance was a little off but I really enjoyed this plot. The author has such a nice way of telling a story, she gives you details so you can create your own vision of the world she has built but she doesn't overwhelm you nor does it become tedious. I fell in love with Darmik just as I did with Dexter in her other series. Jennifer makes her male love interests just so swoon worthy. I'm looking forward to see what happens in the third book and in the series that follow.

I did not expect that when I got book 1, I’d be downloading the rest of the series. I really like Rema, I really like Darmik. I did struggle in the middle a bit, nothing was really happening and I wanted it to move along faster.
I cannot stand Savenek. What an arrogant dick. He has zero personality and is disrespectful to Rema but the suddenly is in love with her?? He knows NOTHING about her. He calls her a stupid woman, he freaks out when he discovers she is the heir and it’s not a male. He refuses to bow or acknowledge her as his sovereign. Honestly he’s a brat. It’s unbelievable that he is a Captain given his low degree of maturity.

But I still enjoy this story and I need to know how this all ends!

I want to preface this by saying that YA is not my go-to genre, BUT if more authors pieced together YA series the way Jennifer Anne Davis has pieced together the True Reign series, then YA would be my genre of choice all day every day.

This book was exciting, intense, sweet, and powerful. It was the perfect follow up to the cliff that The Key left us hanging from.

The beginning was slightly slow but as a reader I was thankful for the start because it picks up in a BIG way about half way through. I absolutely could NOT put this book down. We are talking staying up til 4:30 am reading know in very well that I had a 7 am wakeup call. I feel like the book would have been almost too intense if it didn't start out the way it did.

Rema did not disappoint. If anything, I fell in love with her sassy, strong, and resilient attitude even more. She is quite possibly my favorite female lead ever. I absolutely LOVE her and Darmik together.

One important note about this series is that it is really one really long book broken up into three parts. So what does that mean for book two? You betcha! A huge ass cliffhanger. This cliffhanger is all kinds of "OMG I NEED BOOK 3 NOW!!!!!!" It will have you cursing and praising a Jennifer Anne Davis at the same time.

This series is an absolute must read for all ages YA and above. I honestly think the story would appeal to all different kinds of people and ages.

And seriously, this series needs to be made into a movie!!!!!!!! The world needs some Darmik on the big screen!!

Note: I was provided an ARC in return for an honest review. And I honestly LOVED this book!!!!

This was really an enjoyable book. I liked the first book and liked this one even more. Great characters and the development of them. I enjoyed Sylvenek ( I know I didn't spell that right, I'll just call him S from now on) a lot but his character is inconsistent in this book but Davis doesn't quite pull it off. He is getting borderline annoying now. I liked his strong silent brooding self and I cannot reconcile myself to his whiney self. I really like the development of Rema's character. She has come a long way from Horse breeder's niece. I dislike Lennick's character with a passion, which I think that Davis must have done a good job if I hate him. He is horrible!
Glad that Darmik and Rema got to finally be together for more than 5 seconds. *spoiler* I really don't like the "I love you" so soon. They didn't spend that much time together in the first book and even less time in the second. I like you a lot or I want to love you.....insta love makes me gag!

That all being said I would rate this a strong 4 maybe a 4.5. I really did love this book, it was great! Look forward to reading more and I hope to see more of Neco and Ellie.

More development on basically every front, with some fun twists.

More engaging writing.

More time spent with these fantastic characters, new ones included.

More intrigue and politics.

In general, it can still be a bit predictable and I still feel that sometimes there's a bit of balance missing regarding the development of certain story-line elements (some things are really well developed, whereas other things could've faired with a bit more development, you know?), but the good in this book definitely outweigh those lesser developed things, by a lot!

Conclusion:

Me = happy with this 2nd installment and I can't get enough of these books!
On to book 3!

I finished this book yesterday and have started the last one in the series. If I thought I hated King Barjon and his heir in the last book multiply that times 100. The king threatens Darmik in this book to find Rema or he is removed from his duty as commander. He is never really treated as a son so no loss there. The funny thing is he let Rema go when he had the opportunity to catch her because she is bleeding from the fall she took during her escape from the noose. Darmik also had his knife lifted ready to free her himself before the rebels jumped in and did it for him.

The worst thing is the king is impatient and scared that evidence will be found out about the deaths of the royal family so he can't afford to have Rema free or Trell. Trell was the commander during the original battle and he lives with disgust and guilt for what took place. He wants to fix his wrong by bringing the queen to her rightful place. He has covered up the fact that the queen lived so that someday the rebels would come back to restore order. A bet is made and if Lennek and the Captain (assassin) find Rema 1st than Lennek is free to do whatever he wants with her before she is executed but if Darmik finds her 1st than she will just get the execution... decisions, decisions. It doesn't matter because Darmik has no intention of turning her over and finally decides to fight for the right team. Along side him is his best friend and most trusted soldier Neco. Together they find the royal fortress and pledge their loyalty to the queen.

Rema awakes to a strange new prison of sorts and meets her savior Mako . She is still not filled in on her identity instead she is filled in on the city she is now in and told that is time for her to begin her training. Mako's commander Savenek has specific orders to teach her all he knows. Savenek was raised by Mako as his son and the two have a profound respect for one another. Savenek is a fierce fighter and other than training shows no interest in anything else. This changes once he begins his training with Rema. The two quarrel repeatedly and Rema even manages to put him in his place a few times but for all their fights and harsh words Savenek confesses his true feelings for her complete with a marriage proposal.

There are several things I've left out and other characters that I did not even mention that are important to the story but each one has got there own part they contribute to the story and to introduce them would simply take too long. The main things are King and heir are still alive but are beginning to turn on the other, Rema lives and still loves Darmik who now has a rival in Sevenek. Through most of this book Rema and Darmik are kept apart but I think that was important because both characters had to grow and learn about themselves. They are brought back together and it is Darmik who tells Rema that she is Princess Amer.

Again this is a clean book with only a few indiscretions by Lennek being mentioned or walked in on. The anticipation for how it's all going to end is there and I am patiently waiting to see the fall of the King and his heir. I have a feeling the king will be killed by Lennek but it is just a feeling at this point and it ends with another cliffhanger.

*****SPOILERS AHEAD TRED CAREFULLY*****
In comparison to the first novel, The Key, I found this book disappointing. Red begins in a way so similar to the first novel – Rema being held in a new place, her true identity still a mystery to her. At first glance, I was okay with the beginning of the book, but as the story continued, and the plot felt very similar to that of the first novel, I began to lose interest in the story.
Moreover, I felt like there were many unnecessary conflicts caused by one simple issue, perhaps my biggest bookish pet peeve – a lack of communication. I can see for logistical reasons why Davis waited so long to have Mako and Darmik to tell Rema of her true identity as queen Amer, as the book would be so much shorter if they had told her right away, which made the plot drag on. However, I felt as though Mako and Darmik’s waiting to tell Rema did nothing to benefit the plot or the characters. Yes, it did give Rema time to train, but she could have trained with that goal of become queen in mind. I just could not comprehend why they did not tell her the moment she was brought to the rebel camp.
In the first book, I liked Darmik’s character, but in this book I did not like where his storyline headed in that his one goal in this novel was to save and protect Rema. I would have liked to see his character develop more and become more complex, instead of merely being the protective love interest. In the first book, I loved how he had multiple goals – not only to save Rema, but also to learn to step away from his father and brother and stand for what is right – but I felt like after he had that revelation, he did no other character development which was quite frustrating from a reader’s perspective.
One of my other issues with this book was the love triangle. I was not expecting Savenek to become a love interest when he and Rema first met, and I was disappointed when their relationship quickly spiraled into one. I could not see how it benefited the plot other than making situations and relationships more awkward between Rema and other characters.
Despite these issues, I did enjoy how Rema began to train and become a stronger person. My favorite scene was when she beat Savenek at the horse race.

This series is just amazing. The writing delivered from Jennifer is nearly flawless and so refreshingly original. And while I do not normally enjoy the first person narrative switching back and forth between two people, I have to say that I actually enjoyed being inside both Rema's and Darmik's heads. It really helps to understand exactly what is going on in two different places, and the sacrifices that have to be made by Darmik.

I also feel that I need to address the elephant in the room... The cliff hanger. Yes, I know. They are horrible and the bane of everyone's existences. Authors write them into their stories just to break our hearts right when they start to feel full of love and a happily ever after. I have to admit, though, that I have never read a story with a better written cliff hanger. It isn't horrible, there is just enough closure that you aren't wondering if someone's life is hanging in the balance (coughthefirstbookcough), but you finish the last sentence and just long for one more chapter. Just one! This one was almost heart wrenching. Something amazing is going to happen, and right when the perfect moment strikes something happens to prevent it. Well, it is an uprising/revolution so there is always something waiting to step in and ruin a perfectly good moment. But I digress, had it ended differently with a pretty little bow on top it would not have had the same effect; and that, my friends, is good writing.

Needless to say Jennifer Davis has delivered an amazing story, once again, and I am aching in my chest to get more. You end up emotionally invested in the lives of her characters, they are your closest friends, they are your brothers and sisters, they are you. When something happens to them you can feel their pain in your gut. Fantastic job. Now we just have to wait for the last book. Sigh.

As soon as I finished The Key I went and purchased Red on my tablet so that I could read it as soon as possible. This book is just as captivating as the first. The stakes are higher and war is on the horizon. Rema faces new dangers and threats and finally learns who she really is and what she is destined for. Darmik, on the other hand, is torn between his duty to his family and his feelings for Rema. He has to make a decision and soon. Their romance is so sweet and heartwarming. I can't wait to read more of the two of them together. The both of them together will be a force to be reckoned with! We also get some new characters. I liked most of the new characters, except one. Those of you who read this book probably know who that one person is. And of course, Lenneck. That sick and twisted prince! I hope he gets what's coming to him soon. I can't stand him! Overall, this book was fantastic. I read this book in one sitting and was dreading to have it end. Now I have to wait for the next book to come out, and it's killing me! Especially with that cliffhanger!

The first book made me lose sleep due to an incident. I hoped that this one wasn’t as horrid and I could sleep at night.

A slow start… In my last trilogy, all the books had over 500 pages and it seemed like that went by extremely fast. This one on the other hand seems to take forever. And so far the books are under 300 pages. I don’t get it. When it seemed like I made progress and I felt like I was halfway through the book, turned out I wasn’t even close. UGH! But then once I made it to halfway it went by really fast. At least with this book it did.

Rema is in the rebel base. They don’t really treat her as the person she is supposed to be to them. Also don’t know if this is a plot hole or what, but why didn’t Rema grow up in the Fortress instead of being put with a family in the very southern region? The royal family had no idea the Fortress existed so… WHY WASN’T REMA RAISED THERE INSTEAD?

Anyway, I hate when there is a triangle and both men are equal. At first, I shipped Savenek and Rema hard. They had this haters-to-lovers thing going on. But then it fizzled out fast when Savenek found out about Rema’s true identity. After that, he became a brat who didn’t get his way. Then when he found out about Darmik, he became an even bigger cry baby. At least to say, I don’t ship Savenek anymore and Darmik redeemed himself. Though I’m not a fan of Savenek’s hot and cold, I’m really not a fan of the fighting over Rema.

The ending was okay. It did end on another cliffhanger. Though it’s not one that made me want to just dive straight into the final book. I do have the final book and I plan on reading it.

I loved the second installment of this series. Action packed, angst and a swoon-worthy forbidden love. This series keeps getting better. I love the characters; main & secondary and I hope nothing bad happens to some of my favorites in book three, especially after that huge cliffhanger!! 4.5 Stars!

I felt the first book was a slow starter but this second book and the third one (War) were fast reads that had me on the edge of my seat.

There is no bad language
no sex but intense feelings of love
lots of fighting and some executions

As per usual, I found something I didn't like about the book. Unlike usual, it was so inconsequential that it barely deserves a mention.

Red was a far different animal from its predecessor. In a very good way. There was so much depth to the characters and the writing was still as engaging and page-turning as before. It brought everything into a much more dramatic light.

The one thing I really feel the need to say though, is that I connected more with the supporting cast. Though Rema and Darmik both overcome much and grow into the people they need to be--for the most part--I still feel like the best development occurred in the lower levels.

Especially when it came to Savenek. Maybe I'm just reading more into him than anyone else because he seriously suffers from a case of literary bi-polar disorder, but he seemed to be the most complicated person in the entire book. And I loved him for it. He's focused yet confused, brilliant yet a total idiot, hotheaded and overdramatic… His addition to the story was invaluable. Well … mostly.

Of course, of all the characters, I think my favorite will always be Neco. There's something about his personality, even though he doesn't say much, that just exudes this cool, smooth exterior. It's the kind of aura where you just know he's tactically brilliant, skilled, and deadly dangerous. All with this sexy little smirk on his face because his wit is even more entrancing. And because Ellie is in his life, I DEMAND they get a happy ending because they both really deserve it!

There were, of course, other characters who stole my heart a couple of times, but I digress. Rest assured, the ability to get to know them all was well worth sacrificing sleep over.

Now onto the plot:

It is exactly what you would expect from the blurb. The ante is up and things have gotten a lot more dangerous. Though, at times, the pacing of the book doesn't seem to convey this, the writing makes it awfully clear that there is very much to lose by the end of this. I wish I'd felt more of this, but at the same time, I'm glad that I didn't. Because for me to feel more, it would have required Darmik to feel more. But some things are more precious than others, and I certainly felt THAT when it came time for him to make his decisions.

To be honest, there are not a lot of curve balls here--if any. From the blurb, it was obvious how things would play out. This book just describes how the characters reacted to those foreseen circumstances. That's not a bad thing. It did it's job with skill and imagery. Just as you would expect.

There really was only one thing about the entire book that irritated me to absolutely no end. If you really want to see my reaction, click the spoiler tab. You are forewarned: it IS a spoiler.

There's not much else to say. The writing was engaging and entrancing, just as I've come to expect, and kept me flipping pages all night long. (Where I then may or may not have yelled at the author for leaving me, once again, with a torturous cliffhanger…)

This book is definitely a much greater follow-up to "The Key", in my opinion. Now I just have to wait for the third installment… Oi
