Recently divorced and out, David is done pining after the unattainable Julian. He’s ready to learn the ropes of the gay dating scene – but he doesn’t know where to start. Making changes in his life, he joins a new karate class while he’s at it.

A rising MMA star, Hunter has been traveling from dojo to dojo, both learning new fighting skills and earning his keep by making guest instructor appearances. But his recent Alexandria, Virginia post is turning tits-up. He’s in the way of his host’s cramped family, sleeping in the truck is uncomfortable, and his new MMA buddies still don’t know his name. When he discovers that he knows one of his karate students, David, from middle school, he doesn’t think life could get more awkward.

Hunter is chasing a sense of permanence. David is hunting Hunter. If they face their attraction as well as their complex histories, theirs might be a match for life.

SIDEKICK is a gay romance full of drunken idiocy, cage-fighting grit, and sizzling, explicit attraction, and adds up to a happy ending.

The first half was rough to get through. I liked the second half better. But this still was just an OK read for me.

David seemed to be younger than his years and sometimes reminded me of an over excited puppy. He was nice and likable though. He's newly divorced and new to the world of being out and proud. He isn't the hook-up kinda guy and is interested in finding himself a boyfriend and learning to the ropes of dating by his friend Julian and his boyfriend.

Hunter was a likable character as well. He had family drama surrounding him that kept him from going home. He was what my mother would call a wonderer. He roamed around taking jobs with sensei's helping teach classes why he trained for the MMA.

I wish there was more relationship development and it wasn't so rushed. I also would like more MMA in the book.

Side characters were good. Story was OK. Characters were likable. The romance was sweet and a bit insta. Not great, but good. Give it a go if your in the mood for something sweet with no drama.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Side Kick is a cute friends-to-lovers story by Devyn Morgan. I liked the characters both David and Hunter were likable and had great chemistry. I liked the storyline but the execution could have been a little better. The story kind of jumped around a bit for me and had me asking a couple of times, how did we get here? or What are they talking about? And searching back through the story going what did I miss only to realize that I didn't miss anything. There were also a couple of instances where Hunter and David's names got mixed up. Overall not a bad story just could have been done a little better. I did still enjoy reading it. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

4.5 Stars This is a beautiful story for David and Hunter as they connect or maybe reconnect again ;) It includes sizzling hot scenes and a well written story of MMA fighters and karate subjects. A great read I liked to read heaps. Well done with this one Mr Morgan.
David is free and single after a divorce he's now out of the closet. His crush on his friend Julian who tries his hardest to get him out and experience the scene and indicates a trip to a gay club. Deciding to do another sport he tries Karate..
Hunter is a traveling marshal arts instructor who's won competitions. Hunter's next township is.. yip you guessed it. Hunter and David meet.. see what happens next.. A great book to read.. I gotta go back a previous book and read "Cherry Blossoms" where David started.

Ugh. Okay, I confess, I didn’t finish this. I’m only human after all. Let me see. Guy in his 30’s, realizes he’s gay. Gets divorced, has almost no gay friends. Doesn’t want to just hook up but wants a deeper relationship. Meets his friend from grade school. They work through their physical attraction, fall in love and live HEA. Well, that plot has only been used a million times or so. Nothing makes this special. It’s boring and predictable.

A winner!

Being in the right place at the right time worked for David and Hunter. They found themselves re- establishing a childhood friendship which grew into a comfortable and easy love with one another. They both won their match!!

I love David and Hunter. I felt bad for David in Cherry Blossoms and I'm so glad he gets his story. The way the author showed David's feelings as he goes from a lonely divorced and out man to someone in a great relationship was beautiful. Showing how a strong MMA fighter that Hunter is can have insecurities and doubts was perfect. I was given a free advanced reader copy and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. I have enjoyed reading all of this author's books and highly recommend them. They are sweet sexy romances with just the right balance of angst.

This is an interesting book! I've never read anything about MMA before but the plot was fascinating, the interspersion of wrestling, karate and other martial arts, along with the entire way of life of a MMA fighter, was all new to me. The added interest of the main characters' developing feelings for each other add another aspect to the story.

Very cohesive plot. Wonderful characters in a sweet romance. An overall wonderful read.

A really enjoyable story about unexpected love

David is newly out after his marriage is a crushing failure. Trying a new way of exercising, he goes to a MMA gym. There he meets Hunter an MMA fighter training and teaching around the country. Their attraction leads to getting to know each other better.
Low angst, this is a story about 2 genuine nice guys

Cute enough story. Both MC's were likable and the story flowed quickly and without long drawn out drama.
Just one little note though.....if you're going to write about something as specific as MMA, please do your research. A round in MMA fighting DOES NOT GO FIFTEEN MINUTES. Non-title fights are three five minute rounds and a title fight is five five minute rounds. I'm a huge MMA fan and this really bugged me when I read it. So.....there's that.
Otherwise, it was an okay read.
