Guinevere Forever

Rate this book
Guinevere thought that her life was over, that she would spend the rest of her days in a convent or hidden away in Avalon, but she was wrong. Cursed by Morgan LeFay, Queen Guinevere is banished from Avalon and must face the ages alone, hiding in the shadows as a vampire. Through the centuries, she's watched Arthur return again and again, but her love and respect for her husband and king has kept her away. Until now. Morgan LeFay has returned with an ominous threat, and once again Guinevere is forced to make an impossible choice, but one she cannot avoid. Supernatural forces are arrayed against the once-powerful queen...can she overcome them and settle an ancient score?

This book was okay, but it felt a little hollow and cut short. A twist on Camelot lore by adding a supernatural element (vampires and werewolves) in modern time. It reminded me a bit of the tv series ‘Once Upon A Time’.

⎯» POV: Multiple—First Person

“Perhaps it is not Arthur who needs to remember what once was, but you. You, Queen Guinevere, the Undead Queen and the Keeper of Excalibur.”

BBC’s Merlin was my introduction to Arthurian legends. Since then, I’ve read multiple retellings, each with their own unique twist. The twist in this story is that: in the wake of King Arthur’s death, overcome with grief, Queen Guinevere drinks from a vial who’s contents were promised to kill her—which they did—unknowing playing into Morgana’s plan, as the vial actually contained the blood of shee. The blood brought Guinevere back to life, but as an undead—a vampire.

❖ Pro:

➢ I was able to read all three books (the entire trilogy) in half a day, as they weren’t very lengthy.

❖ Con:

➢ Character development was rushed, as were storylines.

❖ Pro:

➢ M.L. Bullock included/covered a vast amount of Arthurian legend in this trilogy.

❖ Con:

➢ By cramming as many characters and details from Arthurian legend as she could within three books, there wasn’t enough time to really enjoy them. We were moving from one story line to the next so quickly, that it was a mimicry of a high turnover rate. It felt like a case of quantity over quality.

❖ Pro:

➢ M.L. Bullock paid homage to the Once and Future King prophecy, through time-travel, reincarnation, and multi-dimensions.

❖ Con:

➢ These three plot-devices are the foundation on which the entire trilogy is built upon. And the only way I can describe it is with this Doctor Who quote, “it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.” Essentially, I found almost all of it mind-boggling.

I did find the trilogy enjoyable enough, but for me, the Arthurian spirit—which I’ve encountered in other retellings—was missing.

Arthur's queen was cursed by Morgan le Fay to spend eternity as an immortal. Seven centuries after, Guinevere is living in the modern world as a vampire who shuns the daylight and avoids humans as much as possible except when she needs to feed. But now Morgan has returned and she wants Excalibur so she can take over her brother's realm. Start of a trilogy of novellas that sees an undead Guinevere strive to reunite with a reincarnated Arthur and reclaim her former glory. It's a promising beginning to the series and a fab take on the old legend.

I greatly enjoyed the Guinevere perspective chapters, they continued to draw me into the story, however, all other perspectives failed to captivate.

Liked this take on Guinevere being a Vampire. I enjoyed the flashback scenes of Arthur and Guinevere when they were together. Overall an easy read as it’s only over 100 pages and will be reading the next book in the series.
