I don't usually read books of the fantasy genre, but this was recommended. So I tried it and was really surprised. The lives of the dragons that live in Ethiolan are numbered, because the last of the Bluescales has died. Without a Bluescale the entire realm is doomed. This is number one in a series and I am looking forward to the next. Try it.

I throughly enjoyed this dragon fantasy. Great storyline, great characters and all manner of dragons. What's not to love! I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I enjoyed this first book in the series. It didn't quite stick the landing with the ending (I felt it was a little forced) and book could use some editing, but I liked the world-building and the mechanics of the shape-shifting dragons.

I got this a few years back at Tsubasacon and never got around to it. I'm being a bit generous in the star rating mostly because I feel like it had a good story but bad editing and I know it had some because she thanked them in the author's notes. So either the editor was bad or she didn't listen to them because that's the only way to explain this level of errors. Homonyms were not her friend, repeated uses of them suggesting that it wasn't a mere typo like hostel for hostile, vial for vile and sorcerous for sorceress (many times). If you didn't know this was self pubbed you would have from this.

The dragons in this world can shape shift into human forms and they're all under attack by a would-be dragon king. He is wiping out entire lines (divided by color bluescales, blackskins, yellowbacks etc) If he succeeds all of the dragon's world will fall and to stop him the heirs of bluescale were sent to the human realm and were raised human.

Zane, the heir of blackskin (and how I wish she called them blackscale) is betrothed to Lavender of the green dragons (naming in this really bothered me, seriously.) He's sort of the pinnacle of dragon kind and he's set to protect the two heirs of blue, Paige, the queen and her younger brother Dean. Things go awry. They're all nearly killed by a traitor.

In saving her (and her saving him) Zane is appointed protector (half appointed by himself). Paige and Dean, having suffered child abuse in the human realm (and hinted at sexual abuse) are wary but learn to trust him. He's also to smooth the way for his stepbrother Ryder to bond with her because it's imperative that she take a mate.

Of course there are many dangers in their path. There is forbidden romance. There is betrayal. Zane, Dean and Paige aren't bad characters. The rest of them aren't well developed enough and neither is the whole worldbuilding. It ends with an interesting twist and then ends in a cliffhanger which made me groan. I am not a fan. I'm not sure I'd hunt down book two to see how it shakes out. If this got reedited, it has a chance to being a good story instead of almost being there.

The Heir of Bluescale is a wonderful YA book for those looking for a new adventure and loves dragons. This is a well written story by Ms Duffin for her first published book and I enjoyed my stay in the world she created and I am looking forward to the second book in this new series to come out. I have already started to fall in love and dislike of the some of our main characters and I'm looking forward to seeing them get fleshed out even more as the series continues.
Zane is our main hero, the prince and future king of the Blackskin dragons, Lavender his fiancé from the Greenwing dragons. Enter the last two Bluescale heirs that had been well hidden on Earth until they were betrayed. We have Paige and her younger brother Dean who are attacked from the moment they are magically summoned from Earth to Ethiolan and the key to saving their realm. There are seven kingdoms in the dragon realm and we'll meet several characters from these other kingdoms. Characters are well written and there is lots of action, intrigue and betrayal to engage the readers mind. I had a hard time putting the book down at bedtime and often took it with me when I left the house on errands. It does end with a bit of a cliffhanger to defiantly whet your appetite for more books in the series.
The only thing I would have liked is a little glossary in the front of the book with some pronunciations and descriptions to help me acclimate to this new world.
I really enjoyed this book and can recommend it for both Young Adult and older readers alike.

The Heir of Bluescale , yes, Please!

I chose to give this 5 stars as the plot is great, the writing is descriptive withoutout being overly so. Dragons! I love 'em! You easily begin to get a feel for personalities but, keep reading because theres so much more to each character. There's a bit of action and it was easy to lose myself in the book. I'm a bit upset with myself for choosing such a good book that doesn't have part 2 yet but, I'm anxiously awaiting the next one in this series. Theres another book thats free when you finish if you sign in for updates. Ive only just started that one. It will have to tide me over. There's a lot of conflict as the story is set up. Not so much romance but, I didn't care. There's nothing raunchy in here if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

I want to say more but I don't want to spoil anything!

Interesting

Definite different play on dragons and the realms and how they intertwined as treachery is evident with the assassination attempts in royalty.

If I could give this book a higher rating I would. It was just so incredibly written. The world building is on point, the characters are well flushed out (even more so in the second book) and I while the first half is a little slow it really starts to pick up around the 40% mark.

Worth the read and I'm looking forward to what Erin Duffin has in store for us!

Awesome story, needs editing

I loved the story of the dragon world and the character and plot development were very good. However, this is a great example of using spell check when writing and/or editing a book. There are problems throughout the book with words that are a correct spelling, but are not the word that is needed. A few that stuck out were president instead of precedent, and suiter instead of suitor. Surprisingly, there were very few punctuation problems or grammatical issues.

If these problems were fixed, this would be a 4-5 star book, but as it stands, I can only give it 3 stars.
