Interlude: First Noel

Rate this book
Before Ethan returns to DC…
Before he becomes Jack’s first gentleman…
Jack and Ethan share their first Christmas together.

Step back to Jack and Ethan’s first Christmas season and the tentative early months of their relationship under the world’s spotlight.

Three months into Ethan’s transfer-in-exile in Des Moines, Iowa, the pressures of dating Jack, the president of the United States, start to wear Ethan down. His weeks are measured by the days he works in Iowa, chasing counterfeiters and financial crimes, and the weekends he manages to steal with Jack back in DC. The media stalks his every move, he’s isolated by his coworkers, and loneliness hammers at his heart.

In DC, Jack tries to piece together a global alliance to take down the Caliphate, while the world seems focused on tearing apart his personal life. Hostility surrounds him from all corners of the globe, but a surprise offer from President Sergey Puchkov may pave the way for a tentative alliance…and perhaps the beginning of a friendship.

As Ethan finds himself in the middle of an investigation that rubs too deeply against his soul and Jack tries to balance leading the free world and keeping his and Ethan’s relationship going, the two men must face what their love has become…and where they are heading together.

The book answers the following crucial question:
How a man (with burning passion and love) can survive the facts that
1. he has a long distance relationship and
2. his boyfriend is the President of the United States.

Well, Ethan is in trouble for sure in this book.
After the events of “Enemies of the State”, he has been transferred to Des Moines, Iowa chasing counterfeiters and financial crimes.
The press is after him, his coworkers are avoiding him, and his new boss makes his life miserable – although he is the most experienced agent.
Jack is in Washington, far far away. Skype, phone calls and texts are the only ways of communication.

The thing is that I was really, truly wondering what Ethan is doing in Iowa. He is obviously depressed and he is not having fun. His cases are given to other agents, because the publicity has to be avoided. His friends are in DC, his love of his life is there. And Ethan keeps going back to this hole in the middle of nowhere because he does not want to be treated differently and he has the sense of duty.

When Shepherd, his boss tells him:

“Why do you even bother coming in? Why do you put up the pretense of being an agent? You’d make it easier for everyone if you just stop pretending!”

Adding

“I don’t give a shit what you do. Come to work. Don’t come to work. Go on vacation for the entire month of December. Run away with the president and get drunk on some beach. I don’t give a shit. Just stop wasting my time, okay?”...

...I think he is just honest, not mean. He really does not know what to do with Ethan.

Of course Ethan has to be treated differently. He is the President’s partner. Everybody knows that - even if they don’t like it. His home is with Jack. He has to be protected every step of the way. He is not like the other agents. He is not like the other civilians.
Thankfully Ethan will realize it in the next book.

Moreover, Ethan seems to be the most unsure about their common future and their relationship. He does not feel he is good enough for Jack. He does not want to ruin Jack’s career. Maybe Jack will forget Ethan now that he works that far away and they only meet during weekends. Maybe Jack wants family and children.

The main issue is that the book to the greatest extent shows Ethan’s point of view. Jack obviously has similar insecurities but they don’t show that strongly.

On the bright side, it is Christmas. Time for holidays. Ethan and Jack exchange heartwarming gifts and they exist in their sweet love bubble. The world and its problems fade away and they literally live one on top of the other for every available second.

“J, all my hours and all my minutes now belong to you.”
(Deep sigh by me…)

Finally, Jack and Ethan express their love in front of the cameras and they go public. They dance together, they touch each other, they kiss and hug without feeling embarrassed.

This book definitely smooths a lot the beginning of the “Enemy of my Enemy”, when Ethan suddenly decides to join Jack in the While House.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Interlude: First Noel tells us what happens with the fallout and repercussions of Jack’s admission of love for Ethan. At the end of Enemies of the State, Ethan is demoted and shipped to a small field office in Des Moines, Iowa. Not only is he dealing with a boss that hates him, he also has to live with the press constantly hounding him. He counts down the days until he can be with Jack again, and that is what keeps him going.

President Jack Spiers also has to deal with world leaders that turned their backs on him because of his love for Ethan. That doesn’t deter him from trying to save the world. He is also struggling trying to make decision that will change the world, without Ethan’s calming voice by his side.

When they are celebrating their first Christmas together, le sigh!!! Their gifts to each other are so sweet and heartfelt, I had a goofy smile on my face. I adore these two together!!

I highly recommend this book, especially if you have read book 2 in the series because you get to see more of them as a couple. The problem is, now I am chomping on the bit waiting for book 3 to come out.

reread 1: Nov 8-9, 2022
This book is the heart of Ethan and Jack. Love this so much, it's the only pb I bought. (I might change my mind later on)

💕 reread 1: May 1-4, 2023 (paperback)
Ethan, the love of my life, kept me sane and alive during finals week and I can't thank him enough. (3Q-1Y)

Ethan had never loved anyone like he loved Jack. And he’d never been loved by anyone the way Jack loved him

Loved this, love it so so SO MUCH.

My heart melted, my emo inner sadist cried, I gushed, I giggled and my cheeks hurt by the end of this book.

“There are some days,” Jack began, sighing, “that I wish I’d never run for president. But being president brought me to you, and I wouldn’t trade us for anything.”

I love the underlying message of how you would do anything short of everything for the person you love. “The Hard Kind of Love” where harder choices are made and sacrifices are dished and through it all, there's not a single thing you would change.

“And this is what you do when you love the hard way. Make those kind of choices that no one else can make.”

Loved how much, how far and dedication and devoted Ethan showed and expressed his love for Jack. It was a love to be envied. It was something magical and my heart broke seeing him try to power through the tough times.

Ethan pressed kisses to Jack’s ear, light and delicate. “I’m okay, Jack,” he said softly. “Really. This―” Smiling, he squeezed Jack’s shoulders. Pressed his forehead to Jack’s. “This is what matters most to me. Right here.”

He’d endure just about anything to keep what he’d found with Jack. Keep their relationship strong and vibrant. Keep what they’d discovered together―were still discovering together. A love that had redefined his whole world. His whole life. For that? He’d endure it all.

And man, this world needs a president like Jack. How safe would the world be then? This man was the comfort of compassion and it was humbling to read him and see his actions and damn me but Tal always has my entire existence take a step back and enjoy the power of his characters.

“Hard choices require hard love. The kind of love that sometimes hurts, it runs so deep. You have that kind of love for the world, Jack. And for everybody.” Ethan’s voice had dropped, rougher and deeper. “You are a good man.”

And everyone was trying to shove Jack into a place he didn’t belong.
He wasn’t stepping out of a closet. He wasn’t admitting that he’d always desired men, had kept something hidden his whole life. That wasn’t what he felt. And he wasn’t trying to change the world. He just wanted to love Ethan, and no one seemed to accept that. Everyone wanted something from him, some kind of statement or stance or public commitment. Something that tried to politicize his personal life, and his love.
Jack sighed. “You caught me.” He grinned. “I’m sorry. I am so attracted to you.”
And there was the full flush, staining Ethan’s cheeks and chest crimson as he looked down. “I’m…uh…really attracted to you, too.”
It was sweet, the way they were flirting. Like they didn’t devour each other every weekend they could. Like it was still new and fragile.

There's only one regret.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I have so many deadlines to finish, I need to finish them before book 2 and I am actually acting petulant like an actual kid and sobbing! Someone wack me!

“I’m here, Jack,” he murmured. “I’m here with you. I’m with you all the way.”

I swear...I am hooked. Hooked I tell ya! These two melt my heart and I want more and more! I still can't believe I'm reading a series with politics. I guess Christmas miracles do happen.

I feel so bad for Ethan and all he is going through with his job. But, he says many times, it is worth it. Worth it to be with his love, Jack. And my heart hurts for Jack and the decisions he has to make as the president. He is such a good man. These two deserve each other's love more than anything.

Gah! And my all time favorite thing...Kissing.

******* Original Review *******

After their affair’s exposure, this novella gives an early insight into how Jack and Ethan navigate their relationship, whilst trying to maintain a low profile for the sake of Jack’s presidency/Ethan’s career. At first, I felt gutted for Ethan, what with the constant media intrusion, a demotion in exile, and continually being treated a social pariah by his peers. I thought he had picked the short straw but then you see Jack not only struggling with prejudice from fellow world leaders but also on the home front too and the absence of Ethan’s presence/support in a testing political era made it all the more harder. Both men quietly worry whether the other will decide it wasn’t worth it. Despite this, they still love each other FIERCELY and I was so happy and relieved when they got to be together. Their scenes made it all the worthwhile, from not having to hide in front of friends, their first Xmas to just reconnecting, not to mention some very hot sexy times 😍. I melted just a tad when Jack didn’t hide his affection for Ethan in the spotlight. The ILYs were a little gushy but given everything that’s being thrown at them, I didn’t mind the fluffiness. These two really needed that confirmation from one another. I cannot wait to read the next in the series.
“I want to be with you,” Jack whispered. “Really with you, Ethan. Like this isn’t a scandal. I want you by my side in those photos I just had to take. I don’t want you hanging out in the corners. I don’t want you to be my dirty little secret.”

More adventures with Jack and Ethan! This one is love and comfort and fluffy, fluffy, fluffy! These two are too fucking cute! Their love story is sappy and cheesy and leaves me stupid-happy. This is romance at its best.

Ethan had never loved anyone like he loved Jack. And he’d never been loved by anyone the way Jack loved him. It was still new, just six months old, but that love had remade Ethan’s entire world. So far, he’d put up with anything. Everything. As long as Jack kept looking at him like that. Kept loving him like that.

Interlude falls right in between Enemies of the State and Enemy of my Enemy. Ethan is still plugging away in Iowa, trying to get his career as a Secret Service Agent back on track.

Ethan is flying to DC every weekend to be with Jack, but the long distances between them are starting to take their toll and stress each other out.

So, Christmas vacation! Ethan visits DC for a holiday filled with love, unflinching happiness and plenty of good sex.

This is a perfect interlude to the adrenaline rush that are books one and two. These boys need time to cuddle and love on each other before the shit start hitting the fan again.

Highly recommended!

Interlude: First Noel is just what I needed to satisfy (for now) my craving for more Jack and Ethan! I love them! And Interlude: First Noel is so much more about them than it is about war and intrigue. And it was beautiful. Jack and Ethan's first Christmas as a couple. *swoon*

And, though I think that Interlude: First Noel can be read before Enemy of My Enemy, since it takes place between books Enemies of the State and Enemy of My Enemy, I found myself actually paying attention to certain characters more because of events that happen in Enemy of My Enemy and I tell you what, it's hard to trust anyone. But! There are no traitors brought to light in Interlude: First Noel. Nope, Interlude: First Noel is a gorgeously fluffy and sexy Christmas story.

We get so much Jack and Ethan in Interlude: First Noel. So much! We get their silly texts, their sexy talk, their deliciously dirty sexytimes a plenty, and Jack and Ethan making plans for the future. And their Christmas gifts for each other actually made me tear up a bit. Plus dancing together at the Christmas Ball, and Jack's very public display of affection.

And threaded through the story is Ethan's current case and Jack's planning a war, and while we get some meat there, the real focus is the dessert. And that dessert is so delicious, I might just go back for seconds.

So, if you're a fan of this series, do not miss Interlude: First Noel!. You'll love it, I promise.

Recommended!

Chock-full of romance and Christmastime cheer, this story serves as a special glimpse into the first holiday President Jack Spiers spends with new boyfriend and prior lead secret service agent Ethan Reichenbach.

Amongst all the delicious romance and swoon worthy moments that melted my heart, this story also shows us more of Jack’s growing alliance with Russian President Sergey Puchkov and gives us a little bit more insight into Ethan’s time in Iowa when in exile.

This point-five story was actually over 200 pages and felt more like another novel in the series than a tasty like extra for fans of the couple. I’m not complaining though, because at this point, I think I’d happily keep reading about Jack and Ethan to the end of days—they’re that wonderful!

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

They gazed into each other’s eyes as they kept dancing, their foreheads resting together, and traded soft kisses in between smiles and gentle giggles.

I started this one nearly immediately after Enemies of the State, and finished it really fast. It’s a smaller book, but gives a lovely insight into what it was like for Jack and Ethan to be in a long distance relationship for a while. It was a little heartbreaking to see how lonely Ethan was in particular, but equally lovely to see how supportive of each other they were. I love these MCs so much already, and I’m worried about the angst coming up in the second book. Oh well. I will survive.

“I want to be with you,” Jack whispered. “Really with you, Ethan. Like this isn’t a scandal. I want you by my side in those photos I just had to take. I don’t want you hanging out in the corners. I don’t want you to be my dirty little secret.”

This was also such a great setup for book two, and I can’t wait to get started. I don’t think Tal could every write something I wouldn’t love. The way he tells a story is like no one else I know about. I adore everything I read by this author.

Once, Ethan had seen a movie that spoke about four great kisses in the history of the world. Step aside, he thought. This is the kiss of the ages.

A literal interlude that expands on the extended epilogue form Enemies of the State.

The convos, the texts, the interactions between Ethan and Jack are seriously top notch swoon, and it really did warm my cold heart.

Again, impressive romance between these two and where this series shines. I look forward to more love and action with no fear that these two will conquer their enemy in the end.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Seems to be getting better*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

This was strangely better than the first book in the series. I do believe that the reason for that is that this one focused more on president Jack Spiers (45) and Special Agent Ethan Reichenbach (36? 38? In his forties?)'s romance. On getting their relationship stronger, more fitted and grounded. Overall, I liked it. Wasn't the best read, but an enjoyable one. I hope book 2 will be even better. Fingers crossed!

It's weird going back with Jack and Ethan to see their first Christmas together after the story had moved on in time at the end of book one.

But it's also a really sweet insight into how they made their long distance relationship work after Ethan got banished to Iowa.

There's also a nice little side plot with an investigation into counterfeiting which takes a sideways turn into an FBI murder case while Ethan deals with his local chief not wanting him there.

Their actual Christmas together is seriously sweet and emotionally satisfying.

To call this a novella would be one of the hugest understatements ever.
'Interlude: First Noel' has amazing depth, incredible writing, a whole murder investigation, a fateful UN meeting and lots and lots and lots of Jack and Ethan.
*dreamy sigh* (that's for the last point, just in case you were not sure. *g*)

I love it when a skillful author like Tal Bauer packs so much in so 'little'.
So how did Jack and Ethan fare after their big revelation in book 1? That was a question I asked myself at the time. And they were all answered here. One thing is blatantly clear: Neither man is having an easy time.

Jack feels lonely and misses Ethan's support and closeness. He needs to decompress at times and longs for human companionship and the man he loves. This gets worse when his job keeps them apart for longer stretches of time.

Ethan has to put up with a tonful of prejudice and all the gossip the media put about. Strangely the FBI doesn't see him as the hero who saved the President and most likely the world, but as someone who didn't stick to the rules and will cause only trouble for any investigation. My heart went out for him because he can't even go and get food without being hounded by the media.

Both men fear that the other might realize that what they are doing might not be 'worth it' because there are the homophobic smears, the slide remarks of colleagues and superiors and most of all the long term separation they are facing.

The thing is that their love just SHINES. Jack and Ethan are one of the most romantic couples ever. Their texts are just adorable (sorry for that), the way they miss each other had me oooh- and aaahing, their explosive desire when they meet up - argh! I just kept bouncing up and down in joy with the biggest grin on my face.

And then there are the Christmas presents. Tal, you were killing me there!

If you haven't read this interlude between book 1 and 2 I highly, highly recommend you do. It sheds a lot more light on Jack and Etan's relationship and was simply PERFECT.

What happens when the world finds out the widowed previously straight president now has a gay lover who happens to be his very own secret service team leader?
Mayhem!
World leaders in an uproar.
Government/White House employees quitting left and right.
Fellow Secret Service shunning poor Ethan for breaking all the rules of engagement with a protectee.
Ambushed by media.
The talk of the world.
Man, Tal Bauer makes Ethan and Jack suffer. But at the same time their love is so strong, so beautiful, so damn magical and epic. 😍
I really loved that even though this was an interlude it's full length at 200 pages. So satisfying.

Loved this, I skipped it the last time I read this series too impatient to jump into book 2. I have to say, I should have read it. It would have made it much easier to cope with the inevitable pain that will surface in Book 2.

Having a boyfriend who is also the President of the United States has to suck, but it's even worse when it's a long distance relationship. Jack is stuck in Washington, and Ethan has been transferred to Iowa. Ethan is racking up those frequent flyer miles, flying to Washington every Friday night and flying back to Iowa every Sunday night.

Jack continues to struggle with the pressures of his office, when he just wants to be a man in love.
He wasn’t trying to change the world. He just wanted to love Ethan, and no one seemed to accept that. Everyone wanted something from him, some kind of statement or stance or public commitment. Something that tried to politicize his personal life, and his love.
Even though this is a novella, it's jampacked with romance, a little angst, and suspense. While it's not necessary to read this book in between one and two, it's highly recommended because it's really good!

"Interlude" was another wonderful addition to Jack/Nathan life. This one takes place before Nathan becomes Jack's first gentlemen and goes to live with him at the Whitehouse.
description
Well, again these guys had me swooning their love going strong as ever, it didn't even matter the distance they had to endure. With Nathan being transfer in exile to Iowa it made it hard for them, but not impossible. That actually was my favorite part, no matter the distance they found ways to always stay in touch either via text, Skype, phone calls or their weekly visits. Man, and when they saw each other it was on, sexy and passionate as only Jack/Nathan are.

description

Loved the action this books to always seem to have with Nathan having to solve the counterfeit money and the mystery around it. It definitely was difficult to see how the other agents treated Nathan, it pissed me off to no end. He didn't deserved it, he only wanted to be the best at his job and be with the man he loved. And of course Jack had to deal with his own problems, people's opinions of his sexuality and getting ready to go to war with the caliphate.
description
But with all the chaos they have been through and the war that seems to be brewing it was adorable seeing Jack/Nathan spent their first Christmas together. I'm a nerves wreck can't wait to see what's next for my guys.❤

Hello,

I was informed that there was a problem with the Amazon Kindle version of Interlude on release day, 12/19/16.

Amazon released a corrupted version of Interlude to all pre-order customers and to some who purchased the book on 12/19/16. My publisher and I were made aware of this and took immediate steps to rectify the situation.

If you have Interlude on your Kindle, please check the Dedication Page. It should say that this book is for you, for all the readers. If you see this, you're golden! You have the correct, uncorrupted file! Happy reading!

If the Dedication Page is blank, you have the corrupted version. Please, stop reading.

Amazon has replaced the corrupted file with the correct file, and all you need to do to get the correct book file is re-sync your Kindle. The correct file will automatically download and replace the corrupted file.

Voila! Check the dedication page, confirm it's the correct version, and you're good to go! Happy Reading!

My deepest apologies to everyone. I am working on figuring out what happened to cause this. I'm mortified, and this is absolutely not the reader experience that I want to bring to everyone.

I am very sorry for this situation.

Please let me know if you have any problems with obtaining the uncorrupted version of Interlude. I will do whatever it takes to take care of my readers.

Yes! This was great from the get go! I know it was much shorter than book one, but, frankly, I thought it was by far the better story overall! :D

Now, I just have to wait and see how book two plays out... Enemy of My Enemy is one long book... I hope it is action packed from page one... I am not sure how I would react if I have to go through half of the book to get to the story, again! ;p

I enjoyed this one more than book 1 but still not a full win and again it's not really the book. This takes place a few chapter before the end of book 1 so it's better to read it after book 1
the relationship : Ethan and Jack are 😍😍🥰😍😍. That was the best aspect of the book even if it got a bit too sugary, even for me, after a while. The 3stars are for them. You could feel the longing and love come through.
the suspens plots : Ethan is investigating counterfeiting linked to murders. I did not like the way it was resolved. The way he was treated by his colleagues was unfair but also implausible, I'll get back to that. Jack is trying to get a coalition with Russia to wage war. This did not work for me either because we, again, got the impression that the President can do what he wants on his own and that everything goes fast. Without a triggering event such as 9/11, and even then it took more than 2years, things would not move that fast. Why do we never see Congress people weighing in? Why is Jack never trying to sell his plan to the nation? His plan should also have resulted in way more internal conflict than we got. Jack's political philosophy really is non-existent and he did not weigh several options before doing what he does... He speaks in abstract concepts "I want to save the world" "I want peace" that does not make a political philosophy.
the flawed premise IMHO the premise for the book was flawed. The relationship is known to the public but Ethan is allowed to keep a job and visit Jack every weekend at the WH. They want to keep their relationship private but it's WAY too late for that especially because Ethan is constantly harassed by paparazzis. At his job no one wants him because he is a liability (no shit, he should have lost his job) but he keeps working. The relationship has more adverse consequences for Ethan than for Jack which makes no sense to me. I really love Ethan so I was sorry for him. Through the book they broadcast their relationship more and more and Ethan keeps working and living on his own. I really did not buy it and felt that not enough was not to protect my Ethan: in terms of physical security and from harassment from paparazzis. We have brief mentions that a few politicians are not happy with Jack but the backlash is not that bad and I did not buy it. Full disclosure I've started book 2 so I know the backlash is coming but I don't get why it was delayed by 6 months.
Onto book 2 😊

Part of a series, not to be read as a standalone.
As the blurb says, after Jack, President of the US and Ethan, his Secret Service detail revealed under unwanted circumstances their loving relationship, they both make the best of the circumstances : Ethan being demoted to the Financial crime unit in Des Moines and Jack, trying to build an international alliance to fight terrorist attacks while being shunned by some heads of States.

Jack and Ethan prove here that their relationship is strong and unfaltering. Let’s not mention very, very hot too. And so much worth all the obstacles they had to face and will have to face in book 2. This Christmassy interlude is all about them and it’s swooning, sexy and sappy as hell.

Now, Tal Bauer, bring it on : I’m sooo ready for book 3

Oh I loved being back with Jack & Ethan ... the angst between these two was palpable- short visits then long days of distance between them. The challenge of love !
Even though I got a crappy copy of the book ( the pre order with edits etc ) I still loved it... can't wait for more❤

I received an ARC as a gift from the author, without expectation of a review. I am offering my honest opinion.

As usual with a Tal Bauer story, I'm a squishy, squidgy, teary-eyed mess. Just like with Enemies of the State and Enemy of My Enemy, I fell in love with Ethan and Jack even more. Well, I'm still kind of miffed with Jack but that's another story...heh. Tal has a way of bringing their characters to life and I've become fully invested in their saga! This story relates the events between the two books and how Ethan and Jack struggled through their long distance, part-time relationship. It's definitely a lighter touch than its book siblings. The highlight is the way Jack and Ethan strengthen and deepen their love and connection. These two are sooo good together. Tal also upped the smexy factor big time! It was the perfect story to include it in, since it's mostly focused on the growing romance.

Ethan is being dogged by rumor and speculation from the press and being judged harshly by his new coworkers. He's involved in a complex case and is forced into the background to minimize any conflict of interest, as well as trying to build a rapport with his new partner, Becker. It's lonely for him but he's committed to doing anything to ease any additional burden for Jack. Jack is neck deep in coalition building and forging a new alliance with Sergey and Russia, and the members of the UN Security Council. He compelled to deal with the realities of homophobia, something he's never had to face before and it's on a world stage to boot. He's still figuring things out about himself and so far, is only certain he's Ethan-sexual! Their Skype sessions, texting and stolen moments together are just freaking adorable. Jacks moments of introspection and self-doubt are soothed by his love for Ethan. Heartwarming and heart wrenching moments fill their dialogue.

In the midst of it all, it's Christmas in the White House! Tal shows us the whole spectacle of the season in our nation's capital as well as the details of how the White House extravaganza of holiday decor comes about. Of course it's done with their usual deft touch, woven into the characters dynamics. Our stalwart SS agents, Scott and Daniels are Jack and Ethan's steadfast friends and facilitators. There are generous helpings of Christmas cheer and holiday romance mixed with the very realistic backgrounds of the characters. Never a dull moment.

Yes, I'm fangirling all over my review and it's very well deserved. I gush over only a few authors but Tal is at the top of my fountain of superlatives. If you haven't read these yet, you are missing out on a fantastic experience.

**Gah! I knew I should give it five stars before I even read it! I'll review in the AM. So freaking awesome
