The Last Serpent #1

Serpent's Touch

Rate this book
The thing about fairy tales is, there's usually a catch. This one was no exception.

The day I, Lilith Palmer, stopped being the Hot Topic girl and became something else started as any other, but ended in the car of a devilishly handsome man whose net-worth was probably higher than the entire neighborhood I lived in; not my usual Tuesday night. That, however, was only the start of the weird path I was about to set off on; a path that would take me to a place where reality collides with magic, where I find out everything I knew about the world I lived in was a lie, and where I'm the only woman present.

There are five of them - five of the most interesting, sexy, and probably dangerous men I have ever met. They live in a mansion in the middle of rural Germany, a mansion protected by magic. And they tell me not only do they have supernatural abilities, but that I have them too, and they're here to help pull them out of me. Sounds like a dream, until that catch comes up.

Supernaturals are being hunted down for the energy they possess, myself especially, and if they don't act fast to bring me into the fold, a fate worse than death awaits all of us.

But triggering my supernatural side to come out won't be easy, not before I'm ready, and when the hunters step up their game and the window starts to close, it'll take everything I have in me just to stay alive; no matter how many men would put their lives on the line to protect me.

Serpent's Touch is the first book in a brand new paranormal REVERSE HAREM series by Tansey Morgan. If you love the paranormal romance and urban fantasy genres, and want to read something that not only straddles the line between both, but introduces not one, but five love interests, then this is the book for you.

Disclaimer: this book is part of a continuing series of novels, all which will follow the same arc over many books, but each which will tease into the next - expect to be left with questions at the end. As a reverse harem urban fantasy, you can expect there to be action, magic, intrigue, and multiple primary love interests. Sexual content will also form a part of this series, as will swearing and violence. If you're happy with all of this, then...

Intriguing

Lilith is just a normal girl working at Hot Topic when she is suddenly attacked one night by something strange. Enter Dante who saved her only to whisk her off to a school for supernaturals to keep her safe. What follows is quite mind blowing and fascinating as the story developments. I felt like Alice falling down the rabbit hole as each new twist was revealed. This book has some incredible world building and we'll developed characters that really keep you guessing. I highly recommend it to fans of the genre. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

I thought the book was okey. For the most part, I liked the plot and how the story developed.

Lilith was minding her own business, leaving work when she's suddenly attacked by two vampires and then just as suddenly saved by some mysterious Dante, who says that Lilith is a supernatural and needs to come with him.
The thing that was unclear to me is whether or not Lilith knew that she was a sup. I mean, she did not act all that surprised when Dante said it and even hinted at some strange things happening to her before, but she also acted as if she didn't know any of this. So, which is it?
I liked the characters, even though we didn't get to spend a lot of time with them, but there is always a next book.
The writing was good and I practically flew through the story. I liked that if some facts were explained, they were explained in an easy to understand manner.

The thing that bugs me (there is always something) is the ending. So, I finished the chapter, turn the page and then I'm like "Um.. where is my second half of the book?".
There was no conclusion or even a cliffhanger or anything of the sorts to make me somewhat satisfied with how it ended, or to even relies that it did, in fact, ended.

Interesting Idea Not Developed Fully

I've been on a reverse harem kick lately and decided to read this even though I rarely enjoy short stories. Unfortunately, like most novellas and serials there was almost no character development. It was especially disappointing because the author writes well, technically. The premis was interesting but through most of the book I was bored because I wasn't invested. Most of the time I didn't know the emotion of the characters until it was told because there was almost no showing through actions. If the author were to develop the characters and provide more descriptive details regarding the surroundings, characters, actions etc this could be a great story.

Lilith is living a normal life just trying to get by. Until a strange man walks into her store and changes everything. No longer able to deny the strange things happening, she has no choice but to take Dante up on his offer. Thrown into a whole new world, Lilith seems to actually be taking things pretty well. She's met her super hot new housemates and started settling in. Outside forces aren't done with her yet though. Being the only female in the house, the guys all promise to protect her. Can they figure out from what before it's too late? Who's going to protect them from her? In a world full of supernatural creatures, you never know what's lurking around the corner.

This is the first book by Tansey and I think she did a good job on introducing us to this new series. Lilith is an easy to like character. Even though she finds herself in a position of needing to be protected, she's no helpless heroine by any means. The guys are all different and also easy to like. Just as you would suspect in the supernatural world they are mysterious and have some secrets.

This was a quicker read but it still held a lot of information. You get a sense of the new world and it sets up nicely for what to expect in the series. There are no sexy times in this book but we do have 5 potential suitors and there's definitely some chemistry happening between some of them.

All in all I enjoyed this book and I'll definitely be reading the next one when it comes out.

If you are looking for a story that is fresh and new, and action packed with paranormal beings in it then I would suggest this book to you.

This book was great! I was so happy to see how new and different this story was from others. I was able to fall into this book world completely and found myself up late just to finish this book. This book definitely kept me entertained and everytime life cut in I found myself just sneaking a couple more pages in between everything else. This book had plenty of action and quite a great story too it as well while never having a dull moment; however one thing this book did do was have me on the edge of my seat quite often.

This book picks up quick, and Lilith finds some strange things out that she never knew to be possible but it also seems as if plenty of the paranormal community is out to either get her or protect her. While this book is a reverse harem it seems to tease on the idea of reverse harem which I am guessing is because Lilith is just trying to find her other half which would be her paranormal self first.

OMG what a great start to a new series! Lilith works in Hot Topic, very unassuming and minding her own business when a hot guy comes in and shakes her up. Next thing she knows she is getting attacked in the garage and ends up accepting the help of the hot guy and Lilliths world then suddenly changes

With action and adventure from the outset it mia a well written and very exciting storyline, I was gripped from the start and disappointed when it ends as I was thoroughly enjoying it, I am anxiously awaiting the next book in what promises to be a fabulous series

So so

Serpent's Touch was an okay start to what looks like a promising series. It did move a little slow and had a bit of a repetitive feel at times... But the story one looks to be quite interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Very short read but it kept my attention the whole time. I really enjoyed hearing of their powers and finding out what the Heroine's was. I wouldn't exactly say this was a reverse harem, but I can understand if some feel it is. Over all, this book was a interesting read; leaving me wanting more.

Cicada tells the story of a hardworking little cicada who is completely unappreciated for what he does. But in the end, just when you think he's given up, he makes a transformation into something ineffably beautiful.

It took me forever to finish this book

I am one of those people that like to finish every book I start. And I usually can finish a book quickly. But this one took me days to complete. I couldn’t start another book and I had no motivation to finish this one.

The beginning and middle of the book were slow and not very interesting. It was only at the end that things got better. But I just don’t know if it’s enough to make me buy the next book. I think I am going to pass and find another series to get wrapped up in.

I think the author was trying to be mysterious and slowly reveal one fact after slowly revealing another fact. But I just couldn’t appreciate it.

Good luck to all you readers out there if you choose to embark on this journey.

Serpent’s Touch by Tansey Morgan is a reverse harem novel and book one in The Last Serpent. In Serpent’s Touch we are introduced to Lilith Palmer. Lilith is just a girl working at Hot Topic. Her night is going normal as usual as she winds down and begins to lock up the store. What she doesn’t expect is for a handsome man to show up and stick out like a sore thumb. Lilith’s sixth sense goes off and alerts her that trouble looms, but little does she know how much trouble is really coming. What she is told leaves her feeling more than a little skeptical but the proof is there and so she decides to take that first step that will begin to change her life forever. She goes from living alone with her cat to living in a mansion with five sexy, interesting and potentially very dangerous men. She’s told that she has supernatural abilities and that she must bring them out or forever be in danger and unable to defend herself. This won’t be an easy thing but really what choice does she have?
Serpent’s Touch is the first book by Tansey Morgan that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. This book is written in the first person format. Lilith has been through a lot in her life. Despite all of this she is a strong character. She is put into more than one dangerous situation but I’m glad to see that she doesn’t fall apart and act like a maiden in distress. She handles things as best that she can. For me, her character is overall pretty realistic and believable. Lilith is faced with a situation that is far from ideal. She’s told that she’s a supernatural and that she must bring out that other side. The catch is that to attempt to pull it out before its ready could make it an epic fail. But failure is not an option because should they fail she will be defenseless but still hunted. Talk about having your work cut out for you. Add in that female supernaturals are rare and being targeted and it just seems like they can’t catch a break.
I enjoyed reading this book a lot. The author does such a good job engaging the reader from the beginning and keeping them engaged throughout. Some parts of this story are predictable but it’s easy to look past that. The story is short and leaves you wanting so much more. There are so many different elements, and of course I have my favorite guy character.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I am impatiently waiting the next book in this series. I want to know more about what is going to happen with Lilith and the five sexy men that she is now living with. This story really will stick with you and have you wanting to know what happens next.

Wow! That was good! No, that's not right. That was great! An intense, page-turner of a story! From page one you feel like you have to read more! I WANT to read more! Now! Ack! When's the next one out again?

Ok. So Lilith has always been pretty normal. Average job at Hot Topic. Pays her rent and bills. Even has a dick of an ex boyfriend. But she has always had this intuition of other things. This - she quickly realizes - is because she's supernatural. After being attacked, she sets off to discover just what exactly she really is. She meets up with a few, not-so-bad-looking guys to help her figure out what's going on. The problem is, she's not what anyone expects, and no one is sure how to handle that.

This is the first book in The Last Serpent series. The series is a reverse harem genre, but this book only touches on the sexual tensions to begin with. There isn't a lot of steamy scenes, but the sexual vibes are all there. Personally, with the book being shorter, I find it a good thing. It isn't just smut on paper, so to speak. (Not that that's a bad thing if that's what your looking for; I just prefer storyline with sizzle.) The book has a real storyline, and it's clear this is just the beginning. Plus it's an intriguing tale with rich characters and room for so much development as the story unfolds, to include more steaminess. 😉 Honestly, had the sexual vibes gone any deeper (*snort* totally unintended, maybe) it wouldn't have felt natural to the progression of the story. Morgan did an excellent job adding in the sexy without just shoving it in your face (heheh... sorry, not sorry). It flowed so smoothly and effortlessly. The whole book did! I can't wait to get the next book and see where it goes!

Lilith is a normal girl working at the mall one moment, being attacked by monsters, and saved by a drool-worthy man, Dante, the next. And that's only the beginning of the new direction her life is going in. Lilith is not exactly human. She is offered a spot in a school where she will be identified and trained, but she must leave her life behind. Lilith doesn't want to jump at this opportunity, but as her life is in danger, she takes Dante up on the offer. The very next day, she is flown to remote Germany, her new home, and her new classmates, 4 guys, Vik, Rafa, Aiden, and Liam with supernatural abilities. Unfortunately, the efforts to kill Lilith do not stop once she reaches the school, so a ceremony is performed to force her supernatural side to surface. When it does, it's shocking and scary. Now maybe everyone should be scared of her.

This book was okay; nothing really stood out about it. Lilith took her life-changing very matter-of-factly. She handled the attempts on her life like a pro. I really didn't have any issue with her, but I never truly connected with her. Plus, the atmosphere of the house and the guys seemed off to me. One minute they were worried and promising to protect her, but then they would leave her alone?? It seemed a little disjointed to me. Dante and the Keeper are largely unknown factors. I also didn't pick up on the attraction between her and the guys like I wanted to. I need more of everything. More world-building, more character development, more attractions/connections. I did think that the ending was good, so maybe book 2 will be more appealing to me.

This is a short read that sets up a new series about supernaturals. The story sets out at a pace right from the beginning and the action doesn't stop. The writing is good and the story flows well. The main characters are introduced though we get very little in the way of back story for any of them but I am sure that we learn all about them as the series progresses. I like the descriptive way Tansey writes and I was especially impressed with the part of story where Lilith finds the supernatural part of herself. The five supernatural men are intriguing and Lilith is very interesting so I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I also enjoyed it because it is different from other urban fantasy books I have read.
I was dithering between three stars and four stars because it was so short and the characters were not fleshed out much but decided to give it four because of the potential for this to be a great series.
I received an ARC but have voluntarily decided to write a review and this is my own opinion.

Decent start

This was a decent start to the series. The girl is a bit dense. As soon as I unheard hex, I suspected how it was happening. Free is never free and she of all people should have known that. Her not screaming when she's attacked is again one of those bonehead moves I hate in a 'heroine'. When you have a group of guys with more knowledge and strength than you, you scream when being attacked. Especially, when you are that close to them. That whole, I won't give them the pleasure of hearing me scream is just ridiculous. You don't sound brave, you sound tstl. Oh and lastly describing a guys head as blocky just takes away any attractiveness from him. I just keep seeing a mine craft head when he's in a scene now!

Interesting

I’m a little late to the game on this series, but better late than Never, eh? This RH is unique, taking the theme of an academy novel but twisting it and morphing the sub genre in its own, individual way. You don’t have a school full of dynamic students - you have 5, and just 5. All are different, supernatural and special.... and all are eager to meet the newest addition to their school in Germany.

Pros:
- Stand apart from others in the genre.
- Foreshadowing.
- She doesn’t just roll over and accept this new reality, girl has some spunk and fight in her.

Cons:
- Little Slow in places.
- She questions everything, but the ONE thing she should question, or at least mention.... she doesn’t?

This is a very short story that would have been better being a little more fleshed out.

Not suitable for non adults due to NSFW content.

We don't get to spend much time getting to know the main characters it's just a series of fast paced events happening to the main character that don't have much story or explanation behind it.

I like the idea of it I'm just hoping that it'll be a bit more meaty in the next story not like eating only a third of a meal.

The monsters in this arn't quite the usual stereotypes which surprised me but I can work with it.

Serial

It would have been nice if the author included that little fact before reading this. I don't like serials, I choose not to read them because they frustrate me. So to find out that this is a serial after the fact bothers me. There was also no world building and no character development, the reader is expected to empathize with the MC for no reason and we're expected to understand a supernatural world that is never explained. Ms. Morgan should be ashamed at calling herself an author.

It’s a no from me

This book had a lot of plot holes. The main character wasn’t someone you could connect with, nor were her potential live interest. There wasn’t really any chemistry that felt real between her and her male consorts. It was all very rushed and in my opinion not good. I have absolutely no desire to read the next book because it was that forgettable. The writing wasn’t horrible, but the world building needed work, the characters were two deminsional, and the plot sequence was just bad.

I'm hooked and already looking for the next in this series. It introduces us to Lilith and the very unique arcane world she now inhabits. A world where no one understands her powers but they all just might kill her because of them. There are lots of sparks flying here, between Lilith and many of the school's residents. The ending is a bit of a soft cliff-hanger that definitely leaves you wanting to know "what happens next?"

Pepper spray ought to do it

Of course Lilith needs protection. I don't understand the point she's trying to make by refusing. It's not like she was a ninja working at Hot Topic before she became fully Supernatural. The description of her world was good but I don't really get a feel for the different personalities. I just know, British, Australian, Spanish, American... and whatever Dante is. Hopefully the next book shows them more in-depth as individuals. Nice short read.

I am liking the start to this series. This story tells you some things without telling you everything. We learn a bit about each character to understand their personality some what but still left us curious about their backgrounds. I am interested in learning more about the what the Supernatural world works in this story and how each of the different supernaturals place in their society. Overall I will continue reading this series and look forward to the next book.

Not really sure about

This story. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the new take on supernatural beings, but felt like the author was throwing a lot of information at me without explaining things. She gave me a lot of terms without giving me her definition so I could only go off my preconceived notions. Since I got this via Kindle Unlimited, I'll continue the series and see where it goes.

Good story but far too short.

I really loved the potential of this book, I just think that the length is really off putting. It’s frustrating because it felt like we only really got a little peek of a look at the world and the characters. The connection that was building between me and the heroine was shut off quickly by the unexpected end, it all felt like it had been cut off too soon.

Great Read!

I'm not sure if this is Tansey Morgan's first book, but it's the first book of hers I've read and I'm very happy I decided to give it a try. Lilith is an amazing character who is independent, strong, sassy and funny. Serpent's Touch is an amazing start to this story, I can't wait to read what comes next. Hopefully not too long of a wait.
