The 90s: The decade of AOL, Grunge music, the Gulf War, OJ Simpson trial, Friends, Seinfeld, Britney and Christina, tattoos and belly button piercings, Monica Lewinsky, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Tarantino movies. It was a decade of polarities and hilarity.
Those who reached adulthood in the Nineties were branded Generation X, and were labeled apathetic slackers and cynics. But, ultimately, this generation was called on to bridge the gap between old ideals and new technologies and ways of living.
These new adults had to find jobs, find themselves, and find love amidst rapidly changing landscapes online and off.
TEN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT YOU is a collection of ten contemporary romance, new adult, stand-alone stories set in the 1990s.
The title of each love story will be a hit song from the year that the novella represents, and are written, respectively, by award-winning and bestselling authors.

A top 11 Amazon Bestselling author, LA Fiore, wife, mom, identical twin, hybrid author, and extraterrestrial, is a fan of the fermented grape and a dabbler in storytelling. She believes in a happily ever after, but she likes to make her readers work for it. When she's not writing, she can usually be found in the garden or hanging on the deck with her family and friends. She lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and their four fur babies.
"For all the 90's kids who still fall in love when the DJ plays their song."
These stories are so nostalgic for me. They are "my" years. I turned 14 in 1990 and I was 24 for Y2K. Before cellphones, listening to AOL dialup, "Be Kind Rewind" stickers on VHS tapes and the music... It was all so much fun to revisit. I'm not sure if there's a better generation, IMO. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nothing Compares 2 U by Michele G Miller + Mindy Hayes 5* One of the best second chance stories I've read! Hannah and Dane were so cute together. Adorable. Their secret high school romance was exactly what we all wanted/hoped for. As soon as they meet again years later their chemistry flew off the pages. I LOVED them!
More Than Words by Christina Benjamin 2* Nope. If this had been a full length novel I would've dnf it. The story and the writing were fine but I NEVER liked the MC. She was trying to find the next great band...like Nirvana and Soundgarden. The best part was when they watch an up and comer band named Shrub or 'Bush'. They thought they were just ok. Yeah right! In the story it's funny but Do I need to remind everyone how 🔥🔥🔥 Gavin Rossdale was in the 90's? Yes, I think it's my duty.... You Are Welcome!
Jump by Micalea Smeltzer 5* Every time I think I've got my favorite story I find a new one. This was about Jenna, a girl so involved in school that she doesn't know how to have fun and Caleb, a boy that wants her to see she can have both. After graduating high school they go on a road trip to experience life. Obviously, they fall in love. It was a beautiful story!
Can't Help Falling In Love by L.A. Fiore 5* Super sexy mechanic named Caleb. A runaway bride...and groom? Pouring $10 worth of change into the payphone to talk to your bf. ZIMA. These things make a great 90's story!!
The Sign by Carey Heywood 3* I picked this story first to read only because I really loved this song at the time. Actually I still love it if I hear it on the radio! Anyway, the story about two friends who start seeing each other as more was simply okay. A lot of readers will like it. For me, it was too cutesy. The music on the mix tape, bc we ALL made them, was very cool.
Who Will Save Your Soul by Skye Warren 4* This one is the darkest story by far! Mobsters and thieves and blood diamonds. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like it but halfway through I really got into it and bumped it up to four stars!
Always Be My Baby by Mary Ting 5* SO good! I think this was the longest story but it FELT short because how good it was. Cammy catches her bf sorta kissing another girl and dumps him. He wants her back but she doesn't know if she should or if she deserves someone better. In walks Grayson who happens to be perfect. I've never heard of Mary Ting but I'm planning to look up her other books now!
Lovefool by Katy M John 3* A music reporter in London gets her dream job and meets potentially Mr. Right. This was ok. It took me too long to actually like the characters to enjoy the story. I DID end up liking it just not like the others.
My Heart Will Go On by Tia Silverthorne Bach 4* What is it about music that transports us back? Knowing what movie this song comes from I had a feeling it was going to be heartbreaking which is why I saved it to read last. I was correct. It was sad but also a very special story moving moving on after losing your first great love.
Genie In A Bottle by Elise Kova 5* ~Jeez, did this song really come out in 1999?!? NINETEEN YEARS AGO? NOW I feel old! ~ This was SO GOOD! I actually thought I'd like this one least only because of the title though, but I think it may be my favorite. "Isn't it ironic? Don't ya think?" It IS about a genie but it was done in such an amazing way. I fell completely in love. The ending... I loved it but also hated it because it was the 'right' ending. ❤
MOST FAVORITE: Nothing Compares 2 U LEAST FAVORITE: More Than Words
This was a brilliant anthology with glimpses of '9os nostalgia that really gave a pitter patter to my heart. Every story had a unique feel and I loved starting each new one just to find out where the author would lead me and what piece of the '90s they would bring into it. Such a great book!
There were 2 stories that stood out to me as stories that I wanted A LOT More of, and I hope the authors decide to continue with these characters. The first one is My Heart Will Go On by Tia Silverthorne Bach, a contemporary romance. Lucy melted my heart from the very beginning. The tragedy she had to endure and her strength to continue really drew me to her. I wanted so badly to fix her and see her find true joy. What a beautiful character and the story...omg so touching. The author definitely gave me the feels. Please Ms. Bach I WANT MORE!
The second story Genie in a Bottle by Elise Kova, a paranormal romance. This was such a cool story! Imagine buying a used N64 game and finding you have a genie that comes out to grant you 3 wishes AND he's smoking hot! Sold, right? This story knocked me on my butt. When I got to the end I was seriously yelling and I wanted to throw my iPad across the room, BUT what an ending.
Whether you like contemporary or paranormal, this anthology will have something for you. Plus a percentage of sales goes to the National Kidney Foundation. It's a win/win.
NOTE: This is a huge anthology, and so I haven't read every single novella in it yet, but I plan to work through them in my own time. I will add reviews for each novella I read below!
Genie in a Bottle, Elise Kova (1999): 4 Stars.
I predominantly purchased this anthology to read Elise Kova's contribution and I have no regrets now that I've read it (and I can totally see how it inspired her Society of Wishes series with Lynn Larsh!).
Overall, I found Genie in a Bottle to be a great, quick read. Erin was a fascinating MC, the plot was complex enough to be compelling, but progressed quickly enough that it never felt bogged down. The mythology gave me enough to know what was happening whilst at the same time leaving me curious to find out more (tell me more Elise Kova, tell me more!). The ending was super bittersweet and totally leaves the door open for more (which, obviously, I'm fully on board for!). So far, off to a good start with this anthology and looking forward to diving back into another novella when I want another quick, fun read!
When I first heard of this piece, I was excited. Being a 90s kid, of course I wanted to read it. Then I saw that it had a pretty good list of authors. Some that I have heard of, some I have read, and some that were completely new to me. This just intrigued me even more.
So, I have been reading a story from this book between other books that I have read. I am over halfway through the anthology and am simply blown away by the talent that was put into these stories. I have not been bored or read a story that I haven't liked.
In fact, I usually wait until I am 100% done with a book before I review it, but this book has been so amazing, I just couldn't wait any longer and wanted to share with everyone else.
I highly recommend this anthology! It is perfect for anyone who is from the 90s, anyone who loves short stories, or anyone who loves to read in general! I promise you will not even be close to disappointed!
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and the different stories. I also liked that I read writing by authors I have yet to read before, it gave me an example of what to expect in their books. Some of the stories were slow in the beginning, which made it hard for me to push through but I was determined to finish this book in its entirety-and I did!
