To tell a good tale.

It’s a simple and valid answer when the question pops up, “Why do you write?”

At the end of the day, it is to tell a good tale.

Vince Milam has lived all over the world, traipsing through the Amazon, Congo, and Papua New Guinea—all the while demonstrating bourbon has medicinal qualities. Raised in Texas, he lives in the mountainous West where he proves—annually—that God doesn’t want us driving on snow. He relishes great reads, fine trout streams, family, old friends, and—especially—writing fast-paced thrillers that keep you up at night.

A former Delta operator goes to Suriname to waste wimps.

Took a long time to get going for one of these types of novels.

What happens to Delta Operators when their tours are over..

I read this story after reading the second story, wanting to see how things were with the 'blood brothers' after leaving the force. This interesting novel shows the love and loyalty of people who have to work together in scary moments. Things you go through can not be spoken, but your teammates become life long family.
Case Lee is one of the team. After jumping into the retired life, with a fiancee and wonderful life, he now works cases for those found on the dark web. His fiancee was murdered, and with that , after realizing that he had a bounty on his head, he remains alone. He lives on a boat, has his Mom and sister living near, and still has contacts with his Delta Force teammates.
A good story with military skills and experiences used to keep all safe.

Case Lee, a retired Delta operator, becomes targeted for assassination by unknown parties for unclear reasons. Case enlists the support of his retired former team mates to even the odds in this originally plotted thriller. The story might sound familiar but it's apparent the author tried hard to avoid writing another "me too" thriller. I liked it and hope to see Case Lee and his associates in subsequent books of a must-read series.

This book wants to be clever but it's only YA level clever.

The protagonist is so full of himself. He is a warrior, he has his blood brothers, the two of them together they can handle 30 bounty hunters if needed. When he talks to someone he describes it as"we were doing the dance, two professionals" even though none of them acted as professionals.

He was spying around, he had his cover stories... my 6 year old daughter wouldn't have bought them.

The author wanted the protagonist to be more than just a tough guy. So now he irritates the hell out of the reader with all his thoughts and feelings and doubts. And his recurring phrases like love and wonder and magic and here & now and joy etc. He loves his blood brothers and they say it to each other all the time. Get a room!

And the Suriname part. The Suriname episode doesn't have a lot to do with the plot. It's just an excuse. When he comes home, that's when the shit happens although the shit is pretty boring. There's a 100 pages about fishing and hunting. I kid you not, I learned a lot about baits and rivers and throwing techniques and hunter dog types. Come on!

If you want a guy who gets the job done like a pro but you don't want to listen to him going on about how tough and professional he is, go for Mitch Rapp or even better: Evan Smoak.

It started with such promise. The premise, the allure of international intrigue, the first-person PoV pulling back the layers of an expert "operator."

But then the preamble dragged on far longer than it should, Suriname nothing more than a brief blip in the plot, dialogue that had me scratching my head at times, and too much reiterated introspective.

Parts of the story were really well done, particularly the Suriname part. They offered a detailed glimpse into an unknown world. Things like exit strategies and what to do when bullets are being fired on the street below. The author clearly knows what he is talking about and has done significant research to fill in any gaps. Unfortunately, the detail came at the expense of plot and pace.

I'd like to give the next book in the series a try because there is certainly potential here.

Okay

Plot is pretty bad, totally unconvincing. Most dialogues are so fake that I couldn't read them. Not sure about Delta but normal people don't talk like that. Book showed some signs of talent but it was very rare. I would recommend reading it if you have absolutely no other choice, and this is one above "forget it". No good but with some skipping it might barely reach two stars

Enjoyed it

Good, but not great. A little too much tangential description for my tastes. I'll read another to check that further.

It’s a fine day when I discover one of my favorite authors has branched out with a new series that is every bit as good as his current one. Though I have to admit, when I ordered book one in Vince Milam’s new series staring Case Lee, retired Special Operations team member and a man with a bounty on his head, I wondered if Milam could plow new fields with the same intelligent writing and superbly entertaining story lines as I’ve come to love with his Challenged World Series. Well, he does. The Suriname Job is classic. The story is swiftly told—no wasted words—and populated by the most interesting characters I’ve come across in a while. Much of the story takes place up and down the Intracoastal Waterway, from Savannah to Virginia, and Milam’s sense of place is as sharp as the mid-day sun on the waters that carry Case Lee to his appointment with destiny. Several of the most memorable scenes pivot around his old team member Bo, who lives off the grid in The Great Dismal Swamp—which by the way, is an actual place straddling the border between North Carolina and Virginia. Bo is definitely a one-off! And if that weren’t enough, Case’s ride is an old boat christened, The Ace of Spades, and his Achilles heel and link to humanity, his sister CC, has a dog named, Tinker Juarez. You have to love a story with a dog named, Tinker Juarez! I highly recommend The Suriname Job.

This is Book 1 in a "Case Lee" series, about a former Delta operator. As is often the case in the first of a series, perhaps too often, there is a LOT of character building for Case and others that I assume will be in at least some of the series. Normally, I'm not a fan of a lot of chit-chat and philosophizing [life and death and taking a life, mainly] in novels of the thriller/spy/special operations genre, but it seldom seemed a burden here. And when the action comes, it's top drawer. Milam is a solid writer, something I"ve had trouble finding in Amazon Unlimited books, and I'll definitely read Book 2. A solid 4 stars. I do recommend it to fans of this genre.

Note: I've just finished Book 2 of the series, The New Guinea Job, and gave it a weak 4 stars. I like the main character, Case Lee, a lot. He's definitely different than the usual alfa male warrior in this genre, but TOO MUCH TALKING AND PHILOSOPHIZING! "How high is the sky" and "how deep is the ocean" gets burdensome! I do recommend it, but not with as much enthusiasm as Book 1. I'll try Book 3 because so far, I like Case so much.

A little different from other books about indestructible tragic military dudes. More background, more emotions, but definitely not enough action.

Excellent adventure story.

The book is good reading. Full of military and spy craft, the story is almost overflowing with angst on the part of the main character. Case Lee lives in a kill or be killed world of assassination, secret marketing, and government deniability. The problem is he and his fellow former military buddies have a price on their heads and bounty hunters trying to collect keep showing up. The guys want to have regular lives but can't with that hanging over their heads.

The author is very successful in drawing a picture that is dark and dangerous but with bright patches that tired warriors can rest in. I will be looking for more of his to read.

New author for me

I bought this book because of its title "Suriname".
The counter used to be part of the Netherlands Kingdom, but opted for its independence in 1975.
The description of Paramaribo does not represent its current status. But all that is not the reason of my low score.
The author's plot is thin and the storyline part of the book is extremely short. The rest of the book are all long drawn out stories of the swamp, Montana, fly fishing and how to make "roux".
Simply said: not my cup of tea.

‘Reflections, unwanted, drifted in. Rae. My wife. Gone four years, now. Murdered.’

Idaho author Vince Milam retains as much mystery about his background as he imbues in his supernatural mystery thrillers. From his resume, only the following offers a few facts: ` I live in the Intermountain West where soaring mountains and vast high deserts give a person plenty of room to think. I've lived and worked in over twenty-five countries around the globe, am a certified Wellness Coach, have a coterie of dear friends and family that provide succor and support, and have an old dog that is also a best buddy. I have an affinity for characters of all stripes, and strive to bring out the uniqueness of my literary protagonists.'

Vince states `All in all, life is a joy and I am so very lucky to be a part of this world we live in' and yet his second novel continues along the path of his series he titles The Challenged World! The three books began with THE UNKNOWN ELEMENT, then PRETTY LITTLE CREATURES and Book 3 GATHER THE SEEKERS. The question arises, `can a man so positive in this manner of approaching life grasp the darkness of evil?' Now Vince enters a new series – the Case Lee Novels of which this is Book 1 THE SURINAME JOB and the answer, fortunately for his readers, is an `absolutely Yes'. Vince ‘s manner of conducting a suspense filled thriller with overtones of Spirituality is refreshing to say the least. His language grows more eloquent with each new book and his ability to retain memories of the early books of the series enhances this story – but the book is quite easily a stand alone novel, so well crafted has Vince made the plot.

The story is condensed as follows: ‘When a mysterious client asks former Delta Force operator Case Lee to investigate a rebellion in South America, he uncovers an incredible global conspiracy. Welcome to revolution, murder, and behind-the-curtains intrigue. As events unfold, the spies and mercenaries come to a hard realization. You may mess with a lot on this good earth, but you don’t mess with Case Lee.’

But the eloquence of the prose is immediately evident as he opens this new series- ‘I carried a price on my head. A million bucks. The source of the bounty unknown. A Yemeni sheik, perhaps. Somalian warlord, Malaccan pirate, Taliban mullah— all possibilities. I’d trade my situation in a heartbeat for more mundane burdens. A failed marriage. Money issues. But that wasn’t my reality. I toted early retirement for the conductor of my violent demise. A quick scan of the small bar— a clockwork affectation to identify threats— ensured the cast of patrons hadn’t changed. The older couple at a corner table. He rubbed her back, absorbed. Her eyes bright, telling a tale. Both still in love. The man at the end of the bar opposite me in a gimme T-shirt. He rolled his own smokes and sipped his drink, stretching it. A bum hip caused him to adjust on the barstool. A middle-aged woman, divorced— no ring evident— sat with her grown son, having a beer. She radiated pride and love as only a mother could do as he talked of a new job, full of excitement. She bathed in his youthful exuberance, smiled, nodded. She lived in the moment and set aside life’s knocks she’d encountered. Knocks and bumps and disasters guaranteed to strike her son, and all of us. A cluster of young people in a corner, laughing and arguing. A solid cast. Good people. No bounty hunters. “ Another one, Case?” Jonas asked. I’d known the bar owner for several years. He met all my expectations for a good barkeep. Served legitimate drinks, did a flyby when my glass showed lonely, and otherwise kept to himself. “You bet.” Jonas poured stiff four-dollar drinks with good booze— Grey Goose, in my case. The lone bar in Joiner, North Carolina, sat on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway. Its small dock offered a regular stop for my boat, the Ace of Spades. A quiet bar, where a man could hole up and find a small crevice of peace and protection.’ And it just gets better.

Vince Milam is now recognized as one of the major writers of suspenseful novels writing today. Polished to a fare-thee-well, this novel is his best yet.

The Suriname Job is one of those books…..one that either you like it or just dd not finish it.
The book is slow and has a lot of prose like dialogues and a lot of details. Weirdly, I like it!
The story and plot is like most spy/espionage book but Case Lee isn’t running around assassinating anyone. He gathers and exchanges informations. Yes, there are action and shooting and killing, of course but they are not his main job. I still don’t know exactly what his real talent is, though I suspect his quick and lethal use of his handling with just his hand and fingers….well, we’ll see because I intend to continue. Vince Milan’s details on Suriname just make me want to know more about the place. Truthfully….there’s some boring part that I felt like skipping but then Cece, his kid sister, appears and Case’s interaction with her put a smile on my face and I forgave those yawning moment. If you expect a Mitch Rapp or Court Gentry action spy thriller….just pass this one by, though.

Excellent series! More Case Lee please. Very interesting and fun! Not extravagant or to much slimey sex scenes. Love the clubhouse bit, especially the Jules character. The info broker but is a great the in between the jobs. The shadowy Swiss connection is also a winner! Do it again! Can't wait for the next one of the Case Lee stories! Hard to write a review with so many words. I'm old and deflicted and usually quit before now! I am trying to see how long it takes for the submit thing to light up! Ain't waiting much longer! This is the beginning of the Case Lee series of books. Case is an ex Delta-Force turned private eye for a shadowy organization similar to John Wick’s organization. It is written noir style with very few sentences longer than five words. This includes every single person Case speaks to. The story is weak, and the writing is poor. I am in disbelief that there are eleven books in the series. At least when a book is this bad, it saves me from reading 10 others in the series.

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

If for whatever reason, I go back and reread a good book, I will change the rating to five-star because I read it again.

Review of The Suriname Job

First time reading a book by this author and he created an interesting character( Case Lee). Lee is a retired ex Special Forces Operator and his old profession cost him the love of his life. Lee and his former partners in his unit have a Million Dollar Bonus on their heads , unfortunately the group completed so many missions they don't know who authorized the job. The author understands the psyche of men like this who have a "License to Kill". The ex commanding officer and everyone in the unit except Lee and No have assimilated into normal everyday life. No lives in the swamp like a hermit, while Lee after his wife s murder lives in a boat down south. The storyline was very interesting, I look who the next book in the series.

Ex-Delta Force operator, Case Lee, uses his skills to find, confirm and report information that his clients seek, generally in developing nations or troubled spots throughout the world.
Sent to Suriname in South America to check out the status of Hezbollah insertion into the area, Case, kicks a hornet’s nest to life when he crosses a Russian agent.

Before reading this book I knew little of Delta Force and the author didn’t really go into detail, he was more concentrated on the emotional health(?) of the operator. Which made for a fascinating story with firestorms, escapes, and friendships. If you enjoy a tale of espionage, murder, and things that go bang in the night it is a great read.

Engaging stuff

Interesting agent/operator thriller. Buddy buddy element-ex-delta force team mates. Information -gathering venture in Suriname followed by aftermath in Southern USA and Wyoming. Distinctive minimalistic prose gives distinctive and original feel. Results in definite compulsion to purchase the next Case Lee novel. Message to Vince Milam: title does not do the work justice. This has been in my kindle for a few years unread, I think because the title was uninspiring. Potential readers note: this novel is much better and more original than the title may suggest!

The first thing you see about Case Lee, is that he is one laid back dude. He cruises up and down the east coast in his boat, and likes it. The second thing is, he is a trained killer and doesn't like killing. People that want him dead should take heed to that, because once it becomes necessary, their time is up. As a former Delta, he does contract jobs. Go, assess the situation and report back. He and his Delta buddies have a $1 million bounty on their head- each. Makes things quite interesting. His current contract sends him to South America where he is to find out if the Russians have their hands in cookie jar that isn't theirs, or if it might be CIA.

Solid spy thriller stuff. In this volume you are introduced to Case Lee, former spec forces soldier and now a specialist who works for hire, sort of a mercenary, but mostly an information gatherer. A very capable and skilled, dangerous man, Case is a complex person dealing with past tragedies and not the sort to shoot someone and fire off a witty quip.

The supporting cast are interesting and diverse, particularly his information broker. This book goes a lot of places you probably won't expect, and along the way you're riding in Case's mind as he deals with the events and tries to stay sane and a relatively good person in the process.

I think the story rambles. There is a lot of self analysing, more in the order of making the reader part of the story, becoming a physiologist analysing what is going on. Not my type of read. I'm going to try book two but, if is more of the same I won't finish it.

Always a winner read.

1. Milam isn't afraid to use the God word or refer to belief in something spiritual. Bravo.
2. His books (Milam's, not God's) are never tedious nor predictable.
3. His characters have depth, are not shallow.
4. Women, as well as men, can enjoy them.
5. He researches the geography and the cultural/social aspects of his sites.
6. I assume the moral stances of his major characters are ones he also holds. Maybe wistful hoping but........

Now on to his next book.

Enjoyed the writing, but so many technical errors that research could have avoided. Most glaring: there are no gators in northern North Carolina. 2: constant referral to “assault rifle” - this is meaningless. Just tell us the make and model. 3. Talking about “finger on trigger” - no, no, no. No operator puts his finger on the trigger until target acquired and ready to shoot.

Sorry to be that guy, and even as I read to edit, I hate myself for nit picking. But these are just a few of the errors that jumped off the page of an otherwise enjoyable read. Will certainly continue the series.

Vince Milam has put out another great thriller! The author does a great job of fleshing out his characters and taking the reader to new locales. I really enjoyed his ex-Delta Force (maybe they are, maybe they aren't) guys. They are shown to be superhuman, but also super flawed. The pace is fast and furious, with a lot of geo-political intrigue. I hope this is the start of a series, I liked these characters so much, I hope to get to know them more.

His Family

Case Lee was Delta Force and forged a brotherhood with the men he served with. One of the brothers went bad and the others joined together to combat him and his minions. Vince Milam fills his books with adventure, mystery, love of family and the love the men in special forces have for those they serve with. The Case Lee series is an exceptional set of military novels.

As action thrillers go this one is better than average. Enough events other than body count to keep the reader interested. Grouse hunting, fly fishing, people trying to fix Case up with his 'one true love'. :-)

The ending makes it obvious that there is another novel to follow as there is no closure to who and why someone has placed a bounty on the head of Case.

Will probably read the second in the series if/when available.

5 vs. 50, doesn't matter when Delta is involved!

Case, Bo, Marcus, Catch & Angel, five Delta brothers now retired from the service but when needed they are still on the job. Except there's a small problem. What happens if one of them goes rogue? Lots of action and thought provoking drama. Let Vince Milam's Case books open up small places in the world from small countries to small internal battles that you will enjoy reading about. Some of them may be your battles too.
