Riddles that Kill

Rate this book
The Cannibal Giants are feared by the Shoshone Indians because of their habit of tearing humans apart limb by limb before eating them in caves. That, however, is the least of Maria’s worries.

FRESH OFF THEIR vacation-turned-disaster, Rod and Maria return to the red hills of southern Utah to discover a kidnapper is on the loose in their small town. After an abrupt falling out with Rod, Maria must bury her raw emotions to focus on saving the son of her best friend—all while solving clues to a modern-day riddle that points to a chest of valuable artifacts somehow connected to the abduction.  As she and Rod struggle to regain what they once had, Maria risks her life by trusting her unproven power of Sight in a wilderness haunted by legends of a monster. Will she find the boy still alive or will she die looking?

This is a book in a series and it halos if you have read the previous books, but is not a must to understand this story. Maria is the police chief in Kanab. The area is surrounded by Indian burial grounds. She is watching her friend Beth's children for the weekend and runs into trouble at the Creek. Unfortunately the kids have to watch Maria fight a man that holds the oldest boy hostage with a knife to his next. Maria and Rod have been through a lot with Rod's ex-wife and his ex-best friend. They haven't been as close since they are back in Kanab. Rod takes her hiking and when they get to the bid red K, Rod tells her doesn't want to see her anymore. Maria is heartbroken and makes Rod leave her on the mountain where she falls asleep and has usual nightmares of when she was in the CIA and lost her team. She still blames herself.

Maria has the Sight (she can see dead Indian ghosts among other things) and doesn't understand why she has it. There is a protest at the new reservoir that that is being built as an Indian skeleton was spotted. Jim, Maria's Indian friend has her put her hand in the water along with him, and an Indian Skelton floats to where their hands were. Later that night, Justin, the oldest boy she was watching that weekend was kidnapped from his bed and they only wanted to talk to Maria. They lest a message which is an old riddle that Steven Vein put out which says if you can solve it, you will find two million dollars. The kidnapped said that if she solves the riddle in seven days, the boy won't be killed. Maria is upset and blames herself as she thinks she brings bad luck to anyone around her.

This is a very good and exciting book. There is the kidnapping happening, riddles to be solve, love to be reclaimed, forgiveness among other. I couldn't understand why Rod broke up with Maria, but the mystery is solved later. I felt bad that Maria felt like she brought bad things to people she loved. She was a good woman and detective. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

This book has a lovely mixture of modern thriller and ancient Indian tribal lore. The story moves on at a good pace and keeps your interest the whole time.

You have a couple of different threads of events and suspects to tangle up the story along with spirits of the dead who have been disturbed by modern mans wish to expand no matter what and also a hunt for hidden treasure !

The main character is a female Chief of Police, ex CIA, living in a small town. She has demons chasing her from her past that she still struggles to overcome.

Mix in the treasure hunt - based in a riddle - hence the title - with a missing child and a tribal burial ground being disturbed - means lots of interest and it carries you along at a fantastic pace - I read this in less than a day !

The only part I didn’t really like was the pieces of factual information at the start of chapters - I didn’t feel they really altered or helped my reading of the story - just interfered - this could maybe have been put in an epilogue at the end of the book

Glad to have been introduced to this author via her newsletter and received an ARC copy for free - which I have given my own opinion of freely

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

An exciting read with a puzzle to solve; a former CIA agent, now a sheriff; a handsome lover; hidden treasure and ghosts. What more could you want in a book? Maria, the sheriff in a small town is threatened with the death of her best friend’s son if she does not solve a riddle that describes where a vast hidden treasure is located.

With the help of an unlikely group of women Maria is on her way to the area where the treasure is hidden. The only problem is that it covers over one hundred thousand acres. Where to start? Maria has help. She can speak to ghosts. As she begins her search she is kidnapped by two men intent on getting the treasure. They are the ones that are holding her friend’s son. Now they have her and are forcing her to help them. Can she find some help out there in the Arizona desert? Will Maria find the exact location?

Ms Brpwn’s tale of hidden treasure, criminals and ghosts is exciting, well-written and great characters

I received a copy of Riddles that Kill by Lois D. Brown in exchange for an honest review.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
This is the third book starring police chief Maria and lawyer friend Rod. Having finally admitted to herself and a sleeping Rod that she loved him Maria is blown away when Rod tells her he wants to leave Kanab and breakup with her. But nothing is ever as it seems around Maria: she has the “sight” and it’s up to her to figure out the truth and solve the puzzles before it’s too late. Angry spirits, missing children, missing treasures, and vengeful humans keep the pace fast and furious is this latest installment. And you won’t believe how it ends!

This author is still delivering on this paranormal mystery series. In this third book, we follow Maria as she solves historical mysteries and risks all to save someone close to her, while trying to banish her own demons. There were only a few plot points that didn't make sense to me, but everything worked out in the end in the multiple plot threads. I appreciate that Lois Brown leaves us with a hint of what might be to come in the next book, but with no cliff hangers. Thanks for another good one!

The Legends of Treasure series are something different. I don't think you would peg us for the sort of readers who enjoy crime thrillers featuring ex-CIA agents. However, these have a lot of paranormal activity, a (mostly) satisfying romance, plus hidden treasures. And Lois D. Brown's storytelling is SO engaging! Read our full review at http://wp.me/p5s62b-YQ

This was a delightful read, as always from this series. It gets a low rating due to easy resolve; however. It was nice to see Maria and Rod's relationship progress here. As I always say, the series should be read in order. I must end emphasizing that I eagerly await the sequel. Happy reading!
