Five teenage girls from a small town in Oregon disappear without a trace.

Were they kidnapped, or have the five friends perpetrated a massive hoax? Nine hundred miles away in Las Vegas, a woman with a dark secret vanishes on her way to meet friends for dinner.

Those friends are Del Honeycutt and bestselling mystery author Sabrina Spencer, in Las Vegas for a book convention. As Del and Sabrina investigate their friend's disappearance, they are convinced that she has been abducted, and they begin to uncover the secrets that might have triggered her abduction, secrets that now put Del and Sabrina's lives in jeopardy.

When clues indicate that the five missing girls might also be in Las Vegas, the situation takes a new turn, directly into the unthinkable.

Once again, Del and Sabrina find themselves in deep trouble and marked for death, and they only have a few hours to solve the case or their friend and the five young girls will be gone forever.

This series is very consistently entertaining. I enjoy the main characters and their adventures. The scrapes they get into are stomach churning and frightening. I can’t imagine the terror of being abducted and sold into sex slavery. This is an engaging and entertaining story that also forces us to examine human trafficking and the impact it has on its survivors.

When a friend’s partner goes missing while she’s at a conference in Las Vegas, Del and Sabrina get involved in an effort to help and it’s a good thing because local law enforcement is initially reluctant to see this as anything other than an adult taking a little “me” time. They begin to learn about the darkness in Peep’s background that might have something to do with her disappearance but the choices they make in following leads put them in dangerous positions. Meanwhile, five teen girls have been abducted in Oregon and it’s possible the kidnappings are linked in some way to Peep’s disappearance.

Hands down, my favorite character is Emma, the one teen with the smarts and the gumption to try to escape, and the tension of wondering what would ultimately happen drew me in. As for Del and Sabrina, they are not exactly the brightest bulbs in the box and that’s surprising, at least regarding Sabrina. She’s a best-selling mystery author and makes her living working out the details of investigations so you’d think she’d be a little better at this in real life, wouldn’t you? Also, implausibilities and inconsistencies were a bit too rife but I did enjoy the story on the whole.

Narrator Greg Hernandez does a credible job but I thought he was a little lacking in two ways. First, I couldn’t hear much difference in his characters’ voices and sometimes had to listen for a while to figure out who it was. Second, I didn’t hear much emotion, much interpretation. Still, he has a very clear voice and is easy to understand, a big plus for me.

February 29, 2024 Reading this series again with all the books available (and now on Kindle Unlimited) and love it just as much or even more this time as I did a couple of years ago. Can't recommend Cunningham highly enough to friends and family...

An interesting, fast-paced tale that gets you involved emotionally right out of the box. Book #3 of a series, this one stands alone very well, but I don't think I even ate between the start and finish. I thoroughly enjoyed Del and Sabrina and found their methods of investigation interesting. We know from the git-go they will find the five missing girls, but there are times you have to wonder. These protagonists are sympathetic, quirky, and interesting. I am wanting to read the whole series, now. Thank you FussyLibrarian for sharing Andrew Cunningham with me. He is an author I will follow.

This book is a bit off the norm for Del and Sabrina like other books they get themselves into deep trouble and again possibly murder. Again they get themselves out of and save the day. The twist in this story is not about any of Dels family it is a story were their neighbor Moe's girlfriend disappears and at the sametime 5 teenage girls disappears from Oregon to be sold to the highest bidder overseas. Del and Sabrina needs to go Los Vegas so she can attend a book conference when they arrive the girlfriend of the neighbor named Peep disappears and now the fun starts. You meet drug dealers, child prostitution, sex slaves and maybe a dirty cop and his captian. You a ride of what the teenage girls went thru to survive. As usual you enjoy watching bumbling Del and Moe and Sabrina who always looking and ready for action and always finds it.

Although this one didn't have really many twists, I liked it more than the first two. This book expanded on a little more background of "Peep". Lots of action and at least the main 2 characters didn't always escape free of harm. It was more believable with this book. Good plat, good characters, and a good ending.

The first time I read this, my rating & review didn’t show up

Deception comes back to haunt the teller of lies; Del finds himself more and more a man of action and daring.

All’s well that ends well. For the nonce, at least.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW. VEGAS LIES is the third book in the Lies series by Andrew Cunningham, and I’ve listened to the audios of all three of the books pretty much back-to-back. In VEGAS LIES, as with all of the books so far, readers can count on getting a multi-layered mystery with unexpected plot twists and lots of action. Not only are the stories multi-layered, there are typically multiple plot lines that weave in and out of the books and each story that tie the books together. VEGAS LIES stands alone, but I think it will be better enjoyed if read in sequence, as part of the series.

This third book has a ripped-from-the-headlines disturbing premise to grab the reader's attention. While I had a little trouble suspending my disbelief with some aspects, others are horribly feasible. Author Andrew Cunningham initially has this plot piece moving parallel to another, but of course, the two lines start veering towards each other and ultimately, there is a creative connection of the parts.

Readers see more growth from main character Sabrina, and in VEGAS LIES, we learn more about an interesting side character from previous books, Mo, who could carry a story on her own. The women in this book take charge and provide the muscle and some of the cleverest problem-solving. Men are mostly depicted as base, crass, and piggish – and not the smartest of creatures. This bordered on being overdone even though logically, the men involved in the crimes would have at least half those characteristics. Main character Del is mostly the exception, but some of his choices and his self-deprecating humor cast him as the weak link in the relationship. I’d like to see more balance between Del and Sabrina if the series continues; right now, though the two clearly are deeply in love and passionate about each other, I am not sure they are an intellectual or physical match for the long term.

The strength of VEGAS LIES is in its main characters and the menagerie of secondary characters to love or loathe. The weakness in this book is that the author relies too heavily on summarizing to tell readers who is doing what, where, and why. And the epilogue focuses too much on the characters who won’t likely be returning when readers will surely want more about those who likely would. Faults aside, if another book is forthcoming, I will definitely give it a listen as the promise of intricate and high-interest plots are enticing.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: Greg Hernandez is back to narrate this third book in the series, and he has become the voice of main character Del. He consistently voices all the characters and with each of these books, he is moving further from reading and more into performing. There is a subtle infusion of emotion in his narration, and it fits well with Del’s personality, but it's too subtle for some of the others. His even pacing and delivery allowed me to listen at regular speed, which is always a plus.

Thank you to Audiobookworm Promotions and Mr. Hernandez for providing me an audio download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. This full review and more special features on Hall Ways Blog.

Note: While this is Book 3 in the series, it works fine as a stand alone novel.

So far, this is the best of the series. The first 2 books I was luke warm on, though Book 2 was better than Book 1. The setting is Las Vegas, always a great location for a tale of villainy. Sabrina Spencer is there for a book event, even though she rather be home hammering out the next murder mystery. Alas, she’s having to deal with her fame in Vegas. But she has her trusty sidekick, Del.

My favorite part was the missing teenagers. They were realistic and brave. In fact, I felt their characters were better written than the main characters. However, I do recognize we only see them in small slices. Del and Sabrina get pulled into this mess because their friend Peep (Mo’s girlfriend) has been abducted.

The story starts off smart and sharp but quickly draws itself out diluting the tension. The plot got too big and wonky. Too many crimes were crushed into one tale. Drugs, human trafficking, murder, etc. Still, I love a desert setting. I especially liked the underground facility. It was a little tricky for Del to rush in and save the day but he soldiered on with the few clues he had.

All together, the tale was OK. There’s still plenty of lucky moments where clues are dropped, tripped over, or easily given up allowing our heroes to look a little smarter. Emma, one of the kidnapped Oregon girls, really shined, being brave and a key person in the ultimate rescue. Often the tale is told very plainly, like a news report. Ultimately, I felt it needed a bit of polishing. 3.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Greg Hernandez is great as Del Honeycut. He captures Del’s humor and emotions well. Hernandez’s female voices are nearly non-existent. Hernandez does toss in a few regional accents which helped with keeping all the characters straight. For chunks of the book, the narration is a bit plain, like a news report, but I have to say sometimes the writing is that way too. The pacing is good & there were no technical issues with the recording. 3.5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Greg Hernandez. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Vegas Lies - Book 3 - Review by Martha A. Cheves

Emma began to cry. Lucy nuzzled up against her in an effort to comfort her friend, but there was no comfort, just abject fear. If his hand being there had been so unpleasant, what would the other thing be like? Slowly the crying subsided, only to be replaced with anger. No, she wasn't going to let that happen to her. It would be far worse than death. She was going to find a way to escape, and if she couldn't, she was going to die.

Five young teenage girls from the small town of Vista, Oregon disappeared in the same night. At first it was thought that the five friends, who were coming home from a movie, had run away together, escaping the stifling atmosphere of small-town America. But once it was determined that they were all reasonably happy, fairly well-adjusted young people, the focus shifted to the unthinkable.

Peep was Mo's partner. Even though they didn't live together, they had been a couple for about five years. Peep was in Las Vegas for a trade show. Sabrina and Del are on their way to Las Vegas for a BookExpo. Sabrina, a best selling mystery author, hates the publicity that follows her but had agreed to take the trip and had also promised Mo that she and Del would meet Peep for dinner the night of their arrival. For some reason Peep never showed up.

As Author Andrew Cunningham combines the stories of the missing teenagers as well as the disappearance of Peep, the tension grows. Where is the connection between the missing girls and Peep? Can they all be found before it's too late? And who is behind the disappearances? These, plus many more questions popped into my head as I read, yet another, suspense filled book in this series.

So, if you enjoy a good page turner, full of twists and turns, don't miss out on this book. It's one that kept me up late at night reading just to see what happens next.

( Format : Audiobook )
"Sheesh, Mr. No Name, that's me."
In Las Vegas for a book convention, Del and his best selling author girl friend, Sabrina become concerned when their dinner date friend doesn't arrive. When her partner Mo, joins them, it becomes obvious that Pricilla's ex husband had abducted her: there was a lot of bad feeling there and the man had been thought to have died years before. The three friends had to find her. At the same time, five teenage girls had gone missing from small town Vista, in Oregon, vanishing without trace.

This book is simply written with fairly brief sentences. There is little depth of characterisation although all of the characters come over as fairly stupid, with the exception of one of the girls. In the two woman one man team of Del, Sabrina and Mo, it is refreshing that it is the female team with the physical fighting attributes, the male being the less than aggressive partner ( though no brighter intellectually, sadly). The very incompetence I'd all of the protagonists makes the story almost plausible but is rather irritating. The narration by Greg Hernandez perfectly mirrors the entire tale, well read but subdued emotional imput: it has the feel of an old detective series in which 'only the names have been changed to protect the innocent'.

I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Vegas Lies by the rights holder, at my request. Thank you. It was a quick and easy read, despite the switching between first person present to third person, and not many protagonists to remember. This is the third in a series but completely stand alone - this is the first that I have read - and I doubt I will read any others. It was fine but just rather bland despite the horrifying subject matter, so suitable for even an easily disturbed consciousness.

VEGAS LIES is the third book in the Lies series. Though each mystery will stand on its own, the series is a continuing relationship between Sabrina and Del. I strongly recommend reading the series in the order of release.

This review could be written in one word: abso-flippin-amazing! (It is so a word!!)

There are two plot lines that seem to be running parallel to one another, with only a disturbingly twisted connection in the mind…. Until those two roads converge. Beautifully done!

The strength in this book lies in the characters, especially the very strong women. When I lived in South Carolina, my two best friends were both black belts; I was the “Del” when we went out. LOL (Don’t worry; I was training.) Though Del is continuously self-deprecating, I loved that by the end of this book he was showing his strength as well.

Narration: I am fully indoctrinated into the Greg Hernandez reading style. While he is not a “voice actor” in the manner to which my fiancé teaches, his method of reading is comfortable and enjoyable. I have one more book in this series to enjoy this week and truly wish I had more.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy via Audiobookworm Promotions Adopt-an-Audiobook, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

This third book in Andrew Cunningham’s Lies series brings us back to Del and Sabrina, who stumble smack into the middle of another mystery. This time, they’re in Las Vegas, and we have a couple of mysteries, although our amateur sleuths don’t realize it at first, and of course, the two will intertwine to bring everything together.
I would say that Del and Sabrina are more lucky than good in their crime fighting, except they aren’t usually very lucky when it comes to avoiding danger and trouble. Nope, these two fall right into the thick of things, whether they want to or not. Bumbling or not, and Del certainly does his fair share of bumbling, this pair is certainly fun to read. Cunningham tempers the danger and tension with well-timed wit and sarcasm that is perfectly delivered by narrator, Greg Hernandez.
Speaking of our narrator, Greg Hernandez has been the voice of Del since book one in the series, and at this point, I can’t imagine anyone else doing it. In my mind, that’s what Del sounds like, and it works very well for the character. Hernandez isn’t flamboyant with the story, and it doesn’t feel like a performance. Instead, it feels like Del is telling us the story as it unfolds, and for this series, it works wonderfully.
All in all, Vegas Lies is a solid addition to the Lies series. I don’t know if future Del and Sabrina books are planned, but I do hope to see more of this witty duo.

I love this series!

The way these stories go, it seems like Del Cunningham is talking to me. Just telling me what's been happening in his life. The fact that the events are sooo unusual is countered by the consistency of the characters, the details of the story, and the sense of humor that threads thru Del's accounts. Great characters, great ideas, excellent story telling, and surprising new twists with each new book. Each twist is odder than the last, but somehow, soon, I'm thinking 'ok. this is going to be good.'
I started with the 'Yesteryear' story (not part of this series) and loved it so much that I started this series hoping that it would be as good. It is.
Even when I can't imagine how a situation can end well, the author manages to craft a creative, believable (to me, at least), detailed solution that connects all the dots. Also unusual, at least to me, he has me laughing out loud at times. I love the characters' sense of humor that pokes thru every now & then ... the kind that keeps you sane when the world seems to be going g crazy.
I wish this series could go on forever. I'm on to the next book, and already thinking 'oh, no, how am I going to find a anything interesting enough to read after this?'

Another Good Read

Chaos and mayhem seem to follow Sabrina and Del wherever they go. This book sees them visiting Vegas where Sabrina, very reluctantly, agreed to give a talk to fans. Whilst there they're supposed to meet Mo's partner Peep for dinner. She fails to show up and has vanished after an argument with a man at the trade show. Has Peep's disappearance got any connection to the 5 young girls who've also gone missing?

The search for Peep pits them against ruthless thugs who deal in drugs, prostitution and people trafficking and they will stop at nothing to protect their enterprise. Not sure if they can trust local law enforcement puts them in even greater danger and the deeper they dig into Peep's past, the more they realise how little they know her.

Can Sabrina, Del and Mo get Peep and the young girls away from their captors in time to save them from a fate worse than death.

Great story, with engaging characters. Its a fast paced, well thought out plot that keeps you engaged throughout. Would definitely recommend this book, and the others in the series.

A dark and disturbing subject matter is tackled head-on in this episode of the Lies series. Sex trafficking, slavery, prostitution, kidnapping, murder, pedophilia, and parricide - these are all everyday light subjects! Our dynamic crime-solving duo becomes a threesome in this disturbing plot as Mo joins the gang, bringing her martial arts skills to the party. I was half expecting Liam Neeson to drop by and lend a hand because he has experience in this type of work.

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are very particular skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you." —Liam Neeson, "Taken"

Overall, putting aside the subject matter, it is a fast-paced, exciting mystery thriller.

While this is another excellent adventure novel for Del and his girlfriend, Sabrina, the subject matter is darker than the previous two novels in the series. It doesn’t detract from the exciting pace, plot twists and wisecracking I’ve come to enjoy in these stories.

In this third entry in the series, Del and Sabrina are in Vegas for a literary convention when the friend they’re meant to meet for dinner disappears. This triggers a hunt that leads our intrepid duo, ably assisted by housemate, Mo, who gets a bigger part and uses it to great effect. From here the plot twists and turns, delivering some clever surprises and keeping the tension high to the dramatic finale.

This is pure escapism of the best kind – fun, entertaining and driven by great characters. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series already.

This is definitely the best book of the series so far, even though it had a short story feel to it. Del and Sabrina were in Las Vegas for a book convention. Suddenly realising a friend was missing and with big connections to Del’s friend Mo, what does the missing friend and Las Vegas have in common? This was one of those stories were it was a matter of life and death. Love the fact that we see more of Mo’s side and the way it was written was slightly different as well, with connection to a disappearance in Oregon as well. Really pleased with the book, great job 🙂

Sabrina and Del are in Vegas. They’re meant to be meeting Peep for dinner but when she doesn’t show alarm bells start ringing. Can they uncover a past full of lies to find her? And what does her disappearance have to do with the kidnapping of 5 teenage girls?

This was a little different in as much as it all took place in Vegas and there was no travelling around the country but still the same premise- Sabrina and Del are caught up in a mystery they try to solve. It was a fun quick read full of drama.

This is #3 of a series of books about a mystery writer and friends. Starts with 5 very young teenagers disappearing from a small town.
The 2 main character Del & Sabrina are in Las Vegas for a book tour and that is where the stories starts to intertwine. Now add a couple of characters from a previous book and the craziness really gets wound together.

Creepy family, strange ex's and more.

Will keep you entertained.

I enjoy these books. Will be looking for the next one

As a parent of a young girl, this is actually a horror for me. I finished reading this in the fastest possible time and still dream about it. I am scared to death imagining what if similar thing happens to my girl. I have taught her stranger danger but that was not enough for the girls in this book. The book, the plot, the narrative all have certainly left a mark on me.

The book has two stories going on at one time which I personally like. The two stories are world apart and then touch each other at the most appropriate time very casually. In the beginning you can not even imagine the two worlds coming together but they do. The writer has apparently the end on his mind already when he started writing. The book is read front to back but to me the ending gelled so well, it seems as if the writer wrote the ending first and then went backwards.

Del Honeycutt Saves the Day

A trilling yarn about kidnapping, the sex trade and the drug trade in Las Vegas. It is the third book in the “Lies” Mystery Triller Series. Unlike the first two books in the series, Del Honeycutt is the pivotal character in the ultimate rescue of his love, Sabrina, Mo and the four kidnapped teenage girls.
I couldn’t put it down having finished it in about three days

Man, I am loving this series! I had never heard of Andrew Cunningham until I read Book 2; now I've read the first three and can hardly wait for more. There was a little language in this one that I don't recall from the previous books, but I'm still willing to risk another. I just adore Del and Sabrina (and Mo, who is prominently featured in this one)!

I'm not sure how he does it, but each book is better than the one I just finished. I finished this and within a couple of days I have finished # 4 and am halfway through # 5 in the lies series. I will be so sad when I finish this book and have to wait for the next to come out in this series. I would recommend this to anyone who even thinks they dont enjoy reading. They would changed forever!

The books are getting better and better

I enjoyed book one and two had some great twist. This was another level. I am glad to except that the two are in love without having to hear about it quite so much. (Sorry old and cynical). This mystery was more believable. Good job. I can’t wait to keep reading on.

Once more, Del and Sabrina find themselves — slightly over their heads — in a dangerous mystery. This time, the hunt for a friend involves them in the more sinister crime of missing girls. The plot is lightened with humor, the general idiocy of henchmen, and the quick thinking of a brave 14-year-old.

Another great story

I have to hand it to Andrew Cunningham, his novels grab you at the outset and don’t let go until the last page. Whether it’s the chemistry of the characters, the humor in the prose or just the fact that each page leaves you wanting to turn to the next, his novels are a heck of a lot of fun.

(Received free for review - audio book/ narrator Greg Hernandaz - not a voice actor, and thankfully doesn't pretend to be; simply reads the book- though the audio book could probably be improved with a different narrator)

[this book could have certain upsetting triggers for some readers.]
While this is a stand-alone contemporary story, the first book in the series should be read to understand the main characters better.
Once again (creeping close to middle age average guy and reluctant hero) Del and (former prisoner turned author) Sabrina are thrown into a life and death mystery. This time the mystery is closer to home and involves Del and Sabrinia's neighbour Mo and her girlfriend Peep.
