The Hallowed

Rate this book
A beautiful woman. A handsome man. A secluded manor, and a family with wealth and intrigue. But it only sounds like a fairy tale...

Celia wakes up to a room she doesn’t remember, in a house she cannot recall. Suffering from amnesia, she doesn’t even recognize her own face.

Her circumstances only get stranger from there.

She meets the LaCroix family, who took her into their home after an accident that left her unconscious and confused, but there is something unsettling about them. Irving, the head of the house, is more than hospitable. His wife, Anjessica, pale and pregnant, seems to grow sicker by the day. Baltus, an elderly gentleman, looks at Celia with an interest that disturbs her. The youngest member of the family, Maynard, stares at the floor and hardly says a word. Twin maids keep watch over the house with hard stares.

Then there is Adam.

Celia doesn’t remember him, but they share a common bond: they were in the same accident. Somehow, he doesn’t remember her either. They must rediscover each other to unlock the past, but the attraction between them is so strong that neither wants to complain. They are invited to stay as long as they’d like while they recover their memories, but it doesn’t take long for Celia and Adam to decide that they don’t want to stay in the sprawling mountainside chateau.

All around them, doors are locked. Someone is always watching. Celia and Adam must rely on one another as they plan for a means of escape – and try to uncover the secret of why the family will not let them go.

Lani Lenore is a writer of gothic horror and dark fantasy. In addition to rewriting well-known fairy tales with a twist, she also writes original stories in a style she calls ‘dark fairy tale’, which uses fantasy elements to build horror stories. Most of her tales, though horrific at times, have a subplot of romance. She loves to keep readers on the edge of their seat and immerse them in worlds of beauty and terror.

That last line though. ;) You'll experience it soon enough.

I love it when my own books leave me smiling! (Evilly, of course)

I was freaking amazed by how awesome this book was. At te beginning your are already asking questions. What? Who?
Celia wakes up with no memory and the peeps that "saved" her let her know "hey, you ok. Wait it out and chill". First you're like "oh, they are nice and all" then shit started getting weird.
You keep telling Celia, "oh no girl, they are creepy assf, get out!"
Then she find out she's not the only one "saved". More and more the peeps start getting creepy and creepier. People die and "things" come out into the light.
Finally when you get to the end and find out what was going on and why Celia and Adam (other "saved" peep) are connect, you're just left WTFing the whole chapter. And that ending!! Ohmyshieet. I was actually smiling 😈😈😈the detail of the gruesome scene, just 😘😘
Seriously. I will read more from the author ❤️

As a fan of Lani Lenore, I couldn't wait to read this novel! I was not disappointed! This is probably her most macabre and creepy novel to date. I deeply enjoyed it and I couldn't put it down!

What a strange, and quick, read. Though the story had good pacing and the reveal was a surprise, I had hoped for more character development along the way.

I truthfully enjoyed this book! The mistery and the suspence around the LaCroix family with their strange behaviour and the curiosity about the forgotten identities of two main characters kept me on the edge for most part of the book.
It was a true horror story: in the beginning, mainly for the dark atmosphere and the creepy acts of almost every member of the family; while, near the end, the author shows you what perversions the human mind can conceive. I wasn't disappointed!

Creepy, creepy book. Great commentary on cults and playing god. Not a book I would have ever picked up if I hadn't been specifically looking for something outside my normal reading genre.

The story unfolded in a manner that strung the reader along with the main characters. It gave and eerie feel to the whole story, by not knowing who to trust, and which person in the house was telling the truth.

The ending was perfection. A great wrap up to a creepy tale. My only complaint is the authors lack of use of the dialogue tag 'said'. The constant emotes were distracting at times.
