I liked Tristan’s approach of systemising culture. It is precise and practical. I also thought the ideas in the book reflect his values as a leader and his communication style - leaders who shares his values and personality, will resonate with his approach (others may find some ideas a bit off) . While overall the book covers key factors to build a great culture, it can be dangerous to over-simplify a complex phenomenon like ‘Culture’. The truth of the matter is we are incredibly complex as human beings - we have lots of layers to who we are - starting from our values, beliefs, identities and going deeper into our shadows, fears and unmet needs. Culture of an organisation is shaped by a number of factors - most importantly by the leaders who bring their unique selves (complex, messy, sometimes insecure, imperfect selves ) to work. Culture is also influenced by the systems, structures and habits of an organisation. I felt Tristan’s approach covers the latter quite well and not so much the former. I’d still recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the subject and learn best practice. Most of all, the success story of Physio Co and Tristan’s commitment to building a culture first organisation is commendable and sets the right example for others.
