A nice short read with some good ideas and it's very clearly working for them as a company but I just can't get past the "we're all a big family" thing 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Written by the CEO of The Physio Co, a company consistently recognised as one of the best places to work in Australia, White shares what it actually takes to build and nurture a great workplace culture.

The notions throughout the book are straightforward, but it's often those simple concepts that create the biggest impact and are easy to overlook. I especially love the vision (or obsession) framework, the focus on leading with empathy, and the reminder that core values should be the foundation for every decision.

I do find it fascinating that bosses who enforce a positive work culture usually do so using such simple methods. This book is an interesting read but doesn't offer much if you're not a business owner.

I liked Tristan’s approach of systemising culture. It is precise and practical. I also thought the ideas in the book reflect his values as a leader and his communication style - leaders who shares his values and personality, will resonate with his approach (others may find some ideas a bit off) . While overall the book covers key factors to build a great culture, it can be dangerous to over-simplify a complex phenomenon like ‘Culture’. The truth of the matter is we are incredibly complex as human beings - we have lots of layers to who we are - starting from our values, beliefs, identities and going deeper into our shadows, fears and unmet needs. Culture of an organisation is shaped by a number of factors - most importantly by the leaders who bring their unique selves (complex, messy, sometimes insecure, imperfect selves ) to work. Culture is also influenced by the systems, structures and habits of an organisation. I felt Tristan’s approach covers the latter quite well and not so much the former. I’d still recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the subject and learn best practice. Most of all, the success story of Physio Co and Tristan’s commitment to building a culture first organisation is commendable and sets the right example for others.

Really enjoyed reading this book, which is part autobiographical and part business case study. White founded The Physio Co (TPC), and was instrumental in guiding the growth of his company as well as achieving recognition as Australia’s Best Place to Work.

He emphasises the application of a system called “Culture is Everything”, which appears well-suited to services business (where people are your most important asset and where high quality customer interactions are paramount). His descriptions of the wide range of tools/approaches is both enlightening and practical.

Almost twenty years on from founding the business, Tristan White remains the CEO of TPC.

The writing is entertaining, and it is moving in parts. Some of the content is more relevant to start-ups and to smaller companies/businesses, but much of it can be generalised to larger/mature corporations and to government agencies.

I wanted to listen to this book because it was something completely different from the previous book I had read. I thought this book might help me sleep better at night. I did find it a bit yankie touchy-feely - let's-all-have-a-group-hug...ish and I am quintessentially too English for all that. It did make me think that I need to do more when it is others' special days and to recognise their achievements. These tokens of appreciation don't go unnoticed and people want to feel wanted, noticed and appreciated. I think we have a good team and have already got a positive culture.

This is such a simple, practical guide to creating a winning culture. It has a checklist that can help you achieve the culture of your dreams. It is written by the CEO of the company, who is passionate about the benefits that a great culture brings. Important point though if your CEO and senior team don’t get it, it will be an uphill battle. The checklist is great but you need buy in from the senior team in your organisation to make the culture change truly significant and noticeable.

Not sure I got much out of this 150 page piece of propaganda. This sounds like an exhausting place to work filled with toxic positivity.

Tip: if someone ever refers to work as a "family" run away as soon as possible.

Interesting, simple, straightforward principles. Not that useful for people who don't run their own business.

Simple principles that are not so simple to implement in your workplace if you're not senior/CEO. Wishing more leaders read and follow the advise in this book.
