As a child, the author dreamt of action, adventure, and foreign travel. At the age of 20, he took the first tentative steps towards achieving those goals; he joined Her Majesty’s Royal Navy as an Artificer Apprentice. Beyond the Waves follows his progress from a naive recruit at HMS Raleigh, to a Petty Officer Weapons Engineer in charge of his own section aboard the aircraft-carrier, HMS Invincible. Join him as he travels the world from the frozen Arctic Circle, to the blistering heat of the Sahara; from the tranquil Caribbean Islands, to the mysteries of Oriental Japan. Share his adventures as he encounters typhoons in the South China Seas, conducts Pirate Patrols, and has a close-call with an IRA terrorist. Experience the excitement as he chases drug-smuggling ships, gets attacked by fruit bats, and patrols the Persian Gulf. This is a story of fun and excitement, and of voyages to foreign shores. Often humorous, it is the true story of Royal Navy life in the 80’s and 90’s. It is the story of my Navy Years... Beyond the Waves is the first book in “The Memoir Series.”
Andrew Heasman was born in London, but has always had the travel-bug. Having joined the Royal Navy at the age of 20, he travelled the world, rising through the ranks to become a Petty Officer aboard the aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible. His next career path saw him become a police officer in rural Lincolnshire, and finally, he gave it all up to become a SCUBA diving instructor, following the sun as he worked his way around the globe. Currently living in Staffordshire, he has put his experiences down in writing. I too was an Artificer of the Marine Engineering type though, I therefore found this book both interesting and informative, we share similar experiences with Far East deployments. The book follows the career path and lifestyle of a section of the Royal Navy now long gone, the Artificer, well written and although dealing with a life outside the RN I look forward to the next instalment.
The cover isn’t bad but I think it would be impactful if there was one of the warships, Invincible on the cover. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about the training program the Royal Navy puts its trainees through. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Mr. Heasman does an excellent job detailing his duties and shore leave during his seven years with the Royal Navy. Unlike other bios from servicemen, he doesn’t dwell on any one topic. He tells it like it is and that was very enjoyable. I loved learning about the weapon systems he was in charge of and how they operated. Very interesting. And then his detail of shore leave could be turned into a travel guide for tourists. The descriptions are that good. I will agree with him about being discharged, the Navy shafted him just as he was about to be eligible for retirement benefits. That was wrong! Who will like this? Anyone interested in finding what life in the Navy is all about. Found zero grammatical issues which was very refreshing. So much of the material being released today is not polished by any means. This one is! Thank Mr. Heasman. Four stars.
