She teams up with her favorite NYPD sergeant, Michael Ryan Kelley, and pulls back the curtain to discover unlikely connections amongst the cast and crew. Her pursuit of the truth takes her deep into the Bronx and on a flight to the southernmost tip of the Americas as she confronts a web of evil that crosses the globe. Will the trip reveal a bright golden haze on the meadow, will the farmers and the cowmen learn to be friends, or will it be all ’er nothin’ for this high femme, intuitive investigator?
Yes, I'm afraid so. This book is extremely well-written and flawlessly edited. This story has mystery, a love connection, sparkling repartee, a curse, and some humor, but it is something else that sets it above so many other books. It educates!! I adore learning new things and Oklahoma Hex serves it right up. Oh, and even more surprising is that it has God/Spirit as well. WAIT... this does not mean it's a preachy tale. But the author is not afraid to have a character who is actively evolving. How refreshing! If you can only read one book this year, you cannot go wrong reading this one. ENJOY!!!
Enjoyable mystery set in the world of NYC/Broadway theater - what could be better!? This was an enjoyable, easy read. Coning from a musical theater family, I really appreciated the setting and the mostly realistic/accurate details on living in a theatrical world. The characters were interesting, and the story line intriguing, even if a bit unbelievable at times (but hey, it's fiction! No worse than Angels & Demons and other like ilk!). I was drawn into the story and wanted to keep reading. Now I am looking forward to checking out other books by Susan Corso.
Gave up reading. I was wanting to read a mystery/crime focused book. My problem wasn’t with many of the characters being lesbian or gay; although, I did think it was a little stereotyping that they were all in theater work. I hated how the main character was continually having contact with “ex-lovers”/one-night-stands.
A friend recommended that I read Susan Corso's novel OKLAHOMA! HEX, the first book in a series of mysteries each tied to a musical. Although I like (but do not love) who-dunnit books, I'm a huge fan of Broadway, so I decided to give the book a try. From the first few pages, I was addicted.
Corso has created a delightful protagonist in New York City resident and recovering alcoholic Mex Stone. Mex may share the same vocation with the Ellery Queens, Sam Spades and Sherlock Holmes of the world, but in her jewel-colored jackets and short black skirts, she's nothing like those male detectives. When Mex Stone walks into a room, heads turn.
She's also got an ace in the hole that trumps the mere deductive powers of most literary sleuths -- her intuition, which appears in the book as a character called "Spirit" who whispers into Mex Stone's inner ear clues about how to solve the mystery, as well as important life lessons and words of wisdom. Mex describes it this way:
"I suppose I ought to explain about Spirit. She's the energy that qualifies me as an intuitive investigator and she also guides my life. Spirit, her name, is of no import. Everyone has an unadulterated center within themselves that knows. I call mine Spirit, but Hephzibah would work just as easily."
It's a device that caught me by surprise at first, but one that works well. By the third chapter, I already looked forward to anytime Spirit popped into the storyline.
Corso writes great dialogue and descriptions, fully pulling me into Mex's world in such a way that I soon felt like was eavesdropping among the show producers, accomplished actors and Hell's Kitchen cops. The personalities are vibrant -- and real. The author also deftly handles plot twists and turns and has created a mystery in this book which made me want to read quickly to find out what happened next.
I give OKLAHOMA! HEX my highest recommendation.*
*The author of Oklahoma! Hex is a friend, but I'd say the same things in this review even if we'd never met.
