Elizabeth Noble writes a beautiful and glorious novel of a contemporary family and friends drama of hope, loss, family secrets, unexpected surprises, rifts and relationships. Tess is in a relationship with her boyfriend, Sean, when she learns of her unplanned for pregnancy. It takes her a while to come to terms with this, and in the meantime, her beloved grandmother, Iris's health has steadily declined, suffering from dementia, unable to look after herself as she is taken to hospital. Tess has been much closer to Iris than her mother, Donna, with whom she barely knows. Iris ensured that Tess had a wonderful childhood, showered with love, engaging in numerous activities, and memorable trips. Now it is up to Tess to organise a home that will deliver the end of life care that Iris deserves and for her to be with Iris to ensure that her last few months of life are peaceful and surrounded by love. Midwife Gigi is the rock in her family, and the one who supports her grown up children, Christopher, Oliver and Megan. She is feeling unappreciated, and her husband, Richard, has been taking her for granted, not pulling his weight and barely even sees her as a person.
Sean is over the moon when he learns that he has landed a much wanted job opportunity in New York and wants Tess to go with him. Tess's pregnancy is not on the agenda, his raw but truthful response that he does not want a baby at the present time, is one that Tess finds unforgivable. This leads to Tess moving into Donna's home whilst her mother is in India. However, this precipitates the return of Donna, and the beginnings of a relationship where the two of them begin to understand and reach out to each other. Gigi's experience of breast cancer and Richard's inability to support her as usual has her questioning her marriage and whether she is willing to bear the loneliness and unhappiness for the rest of her life. To change the course of her life by separating from Richard will be tortuous, emotionally draining and bound to lead to family conflict. In the end, Gigi, feels she has no choice but to embark on a new life, where for the first time in decades she can put herself first. She is supported by her son, Oliver, even though he is struggling in his personal life and Emily. As Tess learns there is much more to Iris than she ever knew when she discovers hidden letters, and her life connects with that of Gigi in a way that is fortuitous and impacts Tess's future for the better.
This is a warm exploration of life's complexities and the unexpected directions and surprises that life throws at people. At the centre of it are strong female characters such as Iris, Tess, her bestfriend, Holly, Gigi, and her daughter in law, Emily. New life comes as Iris draws to the end of hers, relationships come to an end and begin, there is grief, heartbreak, pain, hurt, joy and the wonder of supportive friends when life goes to pieces. This is a fabulous and enthralling read, I found myself caught up with the characters and their predicaments, wanting to know what life had in store for them. Fantastic book! Many thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph for an ARC.

This book revolves round two families who met when they were visiting elderly relatives in a nursing home. Tess's relationship with her Grandmother had been a strong one, but with her Mother, it's strained. Gigi is married to Richard but she is unhappy in their relationship. Letters to Iris refers to the war, her parents and her brother, Tom, but she never shared secrets from that life. This is a beautifully written story about secrets, acceptance of other people's wishes and of course, love. I suspect when the prologue is read. Like me, many readers will shed a rear or two.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph and the author Elizabeth Noble for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tess has discovered that her life is about to change in ways she did not expect. She cannot tell her mother, Donna, as they don’t get along. She can tell her grandmother, Iris. But Iris may not even remember what she is told, as Iris has dementia. Sometimes she doesn’t even know who her beloved granddaughter is. And yet they have shared much of their lives together. In many way Iris has been more of a mother to Tess than Donna has. A suitcase filled with letters helps Tess understand more of her grandmother’s life and issues she had no idea about. When Tess meets Gigi, they form an unlikely friendship. Gigi is having her own relationship issues with her husband of many years. While Tess is preparing for changes in her life, Gigi puts into action changes in her own life. One her three adult children may struggle to understand. The story is told from alternating chapters with Tess and Gigi, so the reader gets to know the characters and their situations well. Nobody handles family relationships and conflicts better than Elizabeth Noble. Even while not always agreeing with some of the character’s decisions, they were made so plausible and understandable. I loved the family dynamics and the way they were handled with Gigi and her family and Tess and her family. I was thoroughly involved at all times. I really liked Gigi and Tess. Oliver, Gigi’s second son is an absolute gem and so was Gigi’s daughter in law Emily. The relationship between them was beautiful to see. It was interesting to see how dynamics with families changed over time. Families, friendships, choices and their consequences as well the heartbreak of dementia are all handled deftly. There were moments of joy and smiles but also of tears. Particularly towards the end the tears came, so keep the tissues handy. If you like family stories that focus on the everyday problems and issues that many of us face throughout life, you should enjoy this one. A highly recommended character driven read, I adored it from start to finish.
Tess has a secret, a baby-shaped secret that will be making its entrance in nine short months. But that isn't the only thing keeping her awake at night; her beloved grandmother Iris is slipping away just when Tess needs her most. Unexpectedly alone, Tess strikes up a friendship with Gigi, a friendly face from Iris's nursing home.
Then Tess discovers Iris had a secret of her own. Did she really know her grandmother at all?
My thoughts
If there was a phrase to sum up this book, it would be 'Live, Laugh, Love'. In fact, I'd be very surprised if the author did not have that phrase framed above her writing desk. They closely relate to each other, in that that phrase doesn't really mean anything; this book doesn't really say anything.
The blurb promised more than this novel gave. I thought that the letters to Iris of titling fame would be more of a feature, but they barely feature. They are a decorative sunset behind the 'Live, Laugh, Love'. I really feel like this story could have been so much more; for example, it could've jumped between Iris's past and Tess's present. It could've explored the reasons behind Iris's silence, and why what happened happened. To be honest, the title hardly relates to the story within.
I did like how the novel put the female characters front and centre, and how they weren't (exclusively) young bouncy types with great hair. On a side note, why do women in these kinds of novels always seem to work in HR or PR or media? Why can't they be scientists or bankers or analysts? If there are any examples of women's literature (for want of a better phrase) with these kinds of characters, send them my way. I could do with them. Anyway, I did like how the story explored how life doesn't end for women after kids, and we have feelings too, dammit. But it kind of skimmed the surface, and there seemed to be little depth of feeling involved. For example, when Tess's boyfriend leaves her (spoiler alert: he's a shit, but a well-meaning one), the heartache is of the pin-prick variety. I don't care how little she's in love with him, the end of a relationship hurts more than a paper cut.
So there. I read it all, but it was like reading pink wafers; insubstantial. The Amazon tag line calls it "the most uplifting book you will read this year" and that isn't really accurate.
Would I recommend it?
No, I wouldn't. Jojo Moyes does this stuff better, and she doesn't shy away from the gory details.
I received a free digital copy of this book from the publishers/author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When Tess finds herself unexpectantly pregnant and single, she feels very much alone until she meets Gigi, a relative of a man in the same nursing home as Tess’s grandmother. As Tess continues her pregnancy, the two women battle their own personal troubles but also end up becoming unlikely friends.
This was a lovely read, and one I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for that snuggly couch read, or a book you could bring on holidays and get stuck into on the plane, or by a pool. I immediately felt warm to Tess and Gigi - the both of them were lovely characters, and I really enjoyed the different family dynamics they had from Tess’s relationship to her mother and grandmother to Gigi’s strained marriage and her close relationship to her sons. I also loved a healthy, close bond being represented between a mother and daughter-in-law as sometimes this is a relationship that tends to get a reputation as always being strained and rival-like. Gigi is definitely the kind of person I’d want as a mother-in-law, I definitely wanted a Gigi hug and pep talk throughout this book.
Tess’s story was lovely, despite the occasional dips of sadness with Iris’s illness and then her tragic backstory with her brother. I thought the romance with Ollie was predictable but perfectly lovely and I couldn’t help myself but root for it (while finding it completely unbelievable seeing as Tess was heavily pregnant with another man’s child). I had some problems with some of the language used in Tess’s passages to her unborn child, more so just the earlier ones when she was only about four weeks pregnant and there seemed to be this huge emphasis on the foetus being a person rather than just a foetus, and I feel like this could be damaging to women reading who could be pregnant and may have to choose a termination for reasons personal to them. I am overly sensitive to this kind of thing at the moment thought because of current political climate in Ireland, so this is something others probably wouldn’t pick up on.
The ending was nice and safe and warm. It more or less all came together exactly how I thought it would be. This book is nothing grand or spectacular, just an enjoyable read.
As one life comes to its end, another one begins - and the generations move on. What may seem like an ordinary story of the mother-daughter bond takes on an extra poignancy with the detailing of every stage of a baby's growth in the womb, as a pregnant mum addresses letters to her unborn child. Elizabeth Noble has written a very moving paean to the maternal instinct and a reminder of the precarious everyday miracle of birth.
Oh dear. Another book that I had to read for book group. We were all unanimous in our opinion of it. TRASH! It wasn't so much about letters to Iris but about a blow by blow mushy account of a pregnancy and impausible and cringy family relationships. Yuk.
I am still not sure why I bought this book, given that it's been around 14/15 years since I last read a book by Noble. The ones I read, Things I Want My Daughters to Know and The Girl Next Door, were pretty enjoyable, but I can't recall much about them.
Nevertheless, since this book has been on my shelf for 3 years, I decided maybe it's time to revisit Noble.
This book is a heartwarming read. The characters are well-crafted, each with unique struggles and growth throughout the story. It delves into complex family dynamics, showcasing the power of love and forgiveness.
Noble's prose is beautifully written, evoking a range of emotions that kept me engaged. She skillfully weaves past and present, providing glimpses into the characters' histories and how they shaped their current lives.
The only highlight of the book was Ted's letters, as they sure were emotional. But it just ended there. The whole time I was hoping for more captivating moments to match the emotional impact they brought. The rest of the book didn't quite live up to the same level of impact, leaving me with mixed feelings about the overall experience.
I did this as an audiobook narrated by Gabrielle Glaister. She added a delightful touch to the story, bringing the characters to life with her expressive voice and engaging tone.
This book was an easy and enjoyable reading experience, perfect for those seeking a light and heartwarming story. While it touches upon themes of love, resilience, and the power of family bonds, it doesn't delve too deeply into complex plotlines. The pacing was slow, and some parts dragged on, so not sure if I'd recommend this.
I expected something and it turned out to be something else. And I can't decide whether it's a good thing or bad. Often the prologue is a part from the later part of the story, But we didn't come to that part. Also, since the title is Letters to Iris, I think the spotlight on senior Iris was not as much as it I was expecting. Gigi's part, though a good read but was not required, the senior and junior Iris would do. I wanted more on Iris and Tom since Tom seemed to be playing a role in the prologue.
In short, I'm confused whether I should be pleased with the book or not. Whatever I read was a good, thoughtful read, though
I absolutely adored this multi layered, family centred tale and was totally enthralled by the vivid, three dimensional characters, the myriad challenges that life has a habit of posing and how they dealt with them in a realistic and apt way.
Focusing initially on Tess, her partner,Sean, her quasi relationship with a largely absentee mother, Donna, and Iris,an ailing grandmother, lost in the fog of Alzheimer's, we are soon enraptured with how they confront the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that Fate had decreed is their lot in life.
Sharing the delightful limelight in this wonderful story is Gigi and her extended family. Under the careful eye of this author an emotionally and deeply compelling tale is embroidered, involving some in a romantic, meandering dance, freeing others to make life changing and hopefully life affirming decisions.
This is a truly heartwarming, positive and reality based story, one that provided much food for the soul.
One point that I must make is that while I loved this tale, when I first picked up the book and read its premise,I was expecting something very different to what was actually revealed. The letters to Iris, while important, only played a small part in the overall web of intricate details in the characters' lives and Iris's secret was something I wasn't expecting.
Overall, this was a fantastic read, one that I'd recommend, while noting that the premise is perhaps a little misleading.
The blurb spoke about love in all its forms and this is perfectly true of this story. The main thread is the immense affection and love that Tess has for her grandmother Iris who was the mainstay of her life in the absence of her mother and father and they were a mutual admiration society for each other. Until now. Iris has early onset dementia and moving her into a home is the only option available.
On top of it all Tess's own relationship with Sean is on the rocks with an unexpected pregnancy and going back to mother is a reluctant option considering their strained relationship over the years.
This is the beginning of the story. Unraveling further we have other characters coming into the story inter twining with the main character Tess and bringing with it parallel love stories of differing kinds. A marriage on the rocks after forty years, the difficulty of getting into a new relationship, the beautiful relationship unexpected and not often found between a mother in law and her daughter in law and the late blossoming of love and respect between an estranged daughter and mother.
It was a story with a very happy ending which was expected but it was not silly or fatuous. It made for a story well told.
This book is simply beautiful and I loved every moment of it. For someone who has just lost their grandmother. This book was exactly what I needed at the moment. It had me reaching for the tissues on multiple occasions and I absolutely loved it. Elizabeth is a master crafts woman and she has wrote one heck of a beautiful novel. 😍😍❤️❤️
A brilliant book, I could not put it down. The story is filled with ups and downs, laughter and tears like any family. The end was a bit rushed I felt and not really true to life but still a 5 star read.
Η νεαρή πρωταγωνίστρια της Νομπλ, η Τες, κρατάει μέσα της ένα μυστικό που θα αλλάξει τις ζωές πολλών ανθρώπων και ο μόνος που μπορεί να το εκμυστηρευτεί τη συγκεκριμένη χρονική στιγμή είναι η γιαγιά της η Άϊρις. Και τις πιο όμορφες αναμνήσεις η Τες τις έχει με τη γιαγιά της. Όμως η Άϊρις γλιστρά ολοένα και περισσότερο στη λήθη οπότε πως να μιλήσεις σε κάποιον για το μέλλον όταν δεν θυμάται το παρελθόν;
Family-drama/romance Think Danielle Steel with a bit more story. A beautiful, at time heart-breaking, story of love, loss, family, secrets, promises and most importantly hope. A little slow to start but by halfway I could not put it down (despite the predictability). An amazing cast of female characters. A memorable read (great for a holiday read too). Lovely.
This beautiful gentle book revolves around two families who meet while visiting their elderly relatives in a nursing home.
Tess is visiting her beloved grandmother Iris. Her relationship with her grandmother is strong and her discovery of her old letters with secrets unfolded is central to the story. Tess is somewhat estranged from her mother and although in a relationship things change with her discovery of her unplanned pregnancy.
Gigi is married to Richard and a loving mother to three grown up children but her marriage has become routine and she wants more. Her decision to leave her husband has many repercussions on her family.
Ginas son Oliver meets Tess and this provides a lovely feel good factor in the book.
This book explores love, self discovery marriage and secrets. I loved the central theme of a grandmothers love something I could relate to as I was very close to my own granny. I read this with a few tears and smiles in equal measures. Masterful storytelling from Elizabeth Noble I will be on the lookout for more of her books
I feel incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to read this beautiful book. It’s one of those books that simply gets under your skin, that you can’t stop thinking about even when you’ve put it down at the end of the day.
It’s a story of love, friendship, family and motherhood. Of four women who are at very different stages of their lives, but who I found I could relate to on a personal level I would not have expected. From Tess who is at the very beginning of her journey, to Donna who has made many mistakes along the way, to Gigi who is the closest to my own stage of life, right through to Iris who is coming to the end of hers.
Beautifully written, moving and poignant, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. A simply unforgettable 5 star read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing and memorable book. Pure perfection.
I was left completely in tears by this book. From the start, I was drawn into Tess's life as she watches her grandmother's decline. Then I was intrigued by Gigi's story wondering how the two would intertwine. Their stories will touch you on every level as between them they deal with facing pregnancy alone, dementia, motherhood and the relationship between mother and child, marriage and what happens when you realise you are only living a half-life? I found I could relate to all of these but found Iris's life to be the most touching. The author has a real talent for story-telling as well as for creating characters that are so real I found myself wanting to leave them messages of support or just give them a hug. I am now emotionally drained but this is one of my favourite reads so far this year.
This book started off well, the writing is good and the characters believable. I particularly liked Gigi’s moment with a turkey! It had potential to be deeper and I thought it was going there... dealing with Iris and James who both have dementia, it was sensitively being handled, however the book slides into Rom-com nonsense! Predictable to the last page, although the final letter had me weeping into my cornflakes! A good escape of a book, with romance more alive than it is in reality!!
''Γράμματα στην Άιρις'' όπως προείπα ο τίτλος του βιβλίου καί αμέσως γεννήθηκαν πολλά ερωτήματα στο μυαλό μου. Ποιά ήταν αυτή η Άιρις; Τί περιείχαν αυτά τα γράμματα; Από ποιόν εστάλησαν; Καί γιατί μπορεί να είχαν τόσο μεγάλη αξία για εκείνη καί τα κράτησε όλα αυτά τα χρόνια καί δεν τα αποχωρίστηκε ποτέ; Ήθελα να ανοίξω με λαχτάρα καί να διαβάσω αυτά τα γράμματα που απευθύνονταν στην Άιρις. Να την γνωρίσω καί να έρθω κοντά της νιώθοντάς την μία καλή μου φίλη. Να μοιραστεί μαζί μου αυτό το βάρος που μπορεί να σήκωνε μόνη της όλο αυτόν τον καιρό. Να τη βοηθήσω να απαλλαγεί από πιθανά φαντάσματα του παρελθόντος καί να ατενίσει το μέλλον με ελπίδα...
''Οι ευτυχισμένες παιδικές αναμνήσεις της Τες είναι συνδεδεμένες κυρίως με τη γιαγιά της, την Άιρις, που βοήθησε στο μεγάλωμά της. Και τώρα η Τες έχει ένα μυστικό ‒κάτι που θα φέρει τα πάνω κάτω στη ζωή πολλών ανθρώπων‒ και ο μόνος άνθρωπος στον οποίο μπορεί να το εξομολογηθεί είναι η αγαπημένη της γιαγιά. Όμως πώς μπορείς να μιλήσεις για το μέλλον σου σε κάποια που δεν θυμάται το παρελθόν της; Η Άιρις γλιστράει μέσα στη λήθη όλο και περισσότερο, μέρα με τη μέρα… Ώσπου η μοίρα φέρνει την Τζίτζι στη ζωή της Τες. Η Τζίτζι νιώθει μεγάλη συμπάθεια για την Τες, μιας και ξέρει και η ίδια τι σημαίνει μοναξιά. Είναι αποφασισμένη να δείξει στην κοπέλα πως κάθε αναποδιά στη ζωή έχει και μια θετική ανάγνωση. Καθώς η απροσδόκητη φιλία των δύο γυναικών γίνεται όλο και πιο βαθιά, η Τες αισθάνεται την παρόρμηση να ανοιχτεί και να εμπιστευτεί τη φίλη της. Mέχρι που η Τες ανακαλύπτει ότι η γιαγιά της, η Άιρις, έχει κι αυτή το δικό της μυστικό. Μια βαλίτσα με γράμματα από άλλη εποχή – τα χαμένα κομμάτια μιας ζωής για τα οποία ποτέ δεν μίλησε σε κανέναν. Θα μπορούσαν αυτά τα γράμματα να κρύβουν τις απαντήσεις που η Τες θεωρούσε χαμένες για πάντα;" (Περίληψη οπισθοφύλλου)
Η νόσος Αλτσχάιμερ καί η γεροντική άνοια,δυστυχώς,φθείρουν το μυαλό των αγαπημένων μας ανθρώπων καί καθημερινά τους/τις παρατηρούμε να φεύγουν από δίπλα μας ενώ είναι ακόμη εν ζωή. Μάταια,προσπαθούν κι εκείνοι/ες μαζί με εμάς να ''κρατηθούν'' καί να μην υποκύψουν στη λήθη... Είναι αντικειμενικά μία δύσκολη κι άνιση μάχη εξ αρχής,αλλά το ''παλεύουν'' μέχρι το τέλος. Άραγε,τί απομένει όταν πλέον έχουν ξεχάσει τα πάντα,μαζί με εμάς; Υπάρχουν πρόσωπα που η ανάμνησή τους να τους γεννά καλά,ή,άσχημα συναισθήματα; Υπάρχουν πράγματα που δεν γνωρίζουμε για εκείνους/ες; Κι αν τυχόν τα ανακαλύψουμε,έστω καί τυχαία,πώς θα αντιδράσουμε; Θα αλλάξουμε την όποια γνώμη έχουμε γι'αυτούς/ες επηρεασμένοι/ες από όσα μάθαμε; Ή θα παραμείνουμε ακλώνητοι/ες στην αρχική μας πεποίθηση καί σκέψη;
Tess thinks she is happy in her relationship; she goes along with whatever he says; moves into his flat, goes to dreary functions where she is decoration; and one day she realises this. She also realises she is pregnant. Unsure of how she feels she hesitates before confiding in anyone and stops to take stock. What does she want – not sure; and the weeks pass? Then he springs two surprises on her over Christmas – the first he has been offered promotion (in New York) and the second is his proposal. At last she reveals the pregnancy and he says it is the wrong time.
Tess is somewhat estranged from her mother but has a strong, emotional relationship with her grandmother, Iris, who is suffering from dementia and lives in a care home, and it is to Iris she reveals her secret pregnancy.
Gigi is married to Richard and is sad when she realises that she is unhappy in their relationship. She loves her eldest son and his wife and child, and her daughter away at university. But the light of her life is her younger son. Gigi is a busy midwife but has an extremely close relationship with her father-in-law, James, who is also a resident at the care home where Iris is a resident.
What follows is a beautifully told tale with secrets at the heart of it. Letters to Iris refer to the war and her parents and her brother Tom but she never shared her secrets about that life. Why was Tess’s mother so distant with Tess; she never explained. Tess confesses her feelings in her own letters to her growing baby.
This is a beautifully written story of secrets, but more importantly, of love and self-discovery: acceptance of others wishes and different perspectives. I loved it, it made me cry. The plot was well constructed and the characters finely drawn. I loved Gigi and her youngest son, Oliver and can only agree with her assessment of her daughter-in-law – a true treasure. Tess, thankfully, woke-up and found what she wanted and needed. Gigi’s husband, Richard – bless him. I did worry about him for he was not a bad man, just got it a bit wrong. Actually, upon reflection, no baddies in this book. However, there are an awful lot of good things that will make your heart warm and your eye weep.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
I did so enjoy this book. Gigi and Richard have been married for a long time and their three children have now grown up. Tess, 35, discovers that she is pregnant but stalls telling her boyfriend as she is unsure what his reaction will be. She and Sean have been together for over 2 years but starting a family is not something that they had planned.
Out of the blue, he is offered a job in New York and has no qualms about accepting it. He and everyone else assumes that she will go with him.
This enthralling sago kept me guessing all the way through. The author shows great compassion for these two ladies and paints a picture of kindness behind both of their motives. They meet at the home that Tess's grandmother is in, and Gigi's father-in-law resides. They immediately form a strong bond of friendship and mutual respect.
Iris has always played a major part in Tess's life. Her own mother is somewhat of a free spirit and always seemed to be worn down by the responsibility of being a mother. Iris would spend valuable time with Tess and was the constant in her life. They are very close, but Tess realises that time is not on their side because of Iris's age.
The author depicts a mostly happy family life for Gigi, but she begins to wonder if there is more to life than the empty nest that she is experiencing. Richard cannot accept that things are changing.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to NetGalley for this opportunity.
Tess has a successful job in Human Resources at a City firm but is finding it difficult to focus, because her ninety-five-year-old grandmother, Iris, is in the hospital; Tess feels responsible for taking care of her, as Iris looked after Tess when her mother, Donna, was distracted and distant. She has also just found out that she is pregnant which definitely wasn’t planned and hasn’t gone down well with her boyfriend, Sean.
Gigi is an empty nester with a boring husband, three grown-up children and granddaughter, baby Ava. We meet Gigi on Christmas day, deciding whether to throw the turkey at the wall or to simply scream at the mundanity of her life.
The two women meet at the Clearview nursing home when Iris is admitted there after her hospital stay; they seem to hit it off when they bump into each other at visiting times.
What follows is a charming account of life ‘as it is lived’ with all its ups and downs, as well as a detailed ‘diary’ of Tess’s relationship with the child growing inside her. The title refers to letters Tess finds at her grandmother’s house whilst she is clearing it, and these give her a window into the past when Iris was young.
It is interesting to see both women take control of their lives and whilst the ending is comfortably predictable, this is a warm and enjoyable read about real women’s concerns, and it happily doesn’t descend into the frivolous ‘chick lit’.

It is wonderful to have a new book by Elizabeth Noble!
Letters to Iris is about modern day life, with all its stresses, strains, expectations, and "doing the right thing".
The narrative weaves together the lives of two very different families interspersed with letters to an unborn child. We see love in all its forms, and complications, yet the story questions whether love needs to be complicated.
The characters are all fully fleshed with backstories detailing how they came to this stage in their lives.
Although Tessa is a believable, and lovely, character, Gigi is the one who resonates with me, probably because of my age....yes, I too, have felt like flinging the Christmas turkey at the wall, for the very same reasons!
We follow these two women as they deal with everything life throws at them, sometimes overthinking things, at other times simply reacting.
There is poignancy as the story continues. Both families have to deal with dementia, the curse of the 21st century. This difficult subject is handled with care, and empathy.
If the story has a moral it is that love is the simplest, and most important, thing in life.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book via Netgalley.
I read this a few months ago. Elizabeth Noble is one of my favorite authors and this story did not disappoint. Iris is elderly and slipping away into dementia and as her granddaughter comes to terms with it we learn more Iris as a young girl and more about the other characters in the story. It is filled with love and drama and emotions. A very good read.
