Stephen Edger - not an author I was familiar with, but how on earth I've missed him I don't know! If 'Dying Day' is anything to go by then I've been missing a treat.
'Dying Day' refers to the day a year ago when young detective Amy, was killed whilst working undercover trying to lure a serial killer, who'd been targeting young women. DI Kate Matthews was head of the investigation team, and she just can't forgive herself for Amy's death, she feels she failed her, and of course it will bring her great pleasure to bring this particular killer to justice.
A year on and another girl is found murdered in much the same way as those earlier victims, and the investigation is given fresh impetus. Detectives now look at the murders anew. Kate however, has been told to stay well clear after her failure to catch the killer previously, but we know she's not going to take any notice of that, not when she has a second chance to avenge Amy's death.
Well my oh my! This was such a gripping storyline, where, (much like a magician) sleight of hand was used in an attempt to divert attention elsewhere, whilst the answer was right there before your very eyes!
I haven't read the first book in the series, but that wasn't a problem as it read perfectly well as a standalone. I actually guessed who the killer was, but it wasn't blindingly obvious, and it didn't spoil the journey one little bit, because right up until the end I could have been wrong, and there was always a slight niggling doubt. If you enjoy a well written, fast paced thriller that's hard to put down, then 'Dying Day' will fulfil all your wishes!

EXCERPT: He pulled back the sheet and for a few cold heartbeats Kate was back in the South London mortuary, and she was staring down at the body of Amy Spencer. She shook her head, and the new victim's face returned to the table. The pale skin clung to the slender frame, save for the patches of yellow and purple bruising around her torso. She couldn't have been much older than twenty-two; such a tragic waste of life.
THE BLURB: Her dark skin looks almost grey; the effect of the elements and death’s touch. Her limp body left pressed against a wire fence like trash. I make a silent promise that I will do everything I can to catch the person who did this to her…
Exactly a year ago, Amy, a young detective on Detective Kate Matthews’ team, was killed when she was sent undercover to catch a serial killer targeting young girls.
Kate never forgave herself for letting the killer slip through her fingers…
As the case is reopened and the campaign to find the culprit begins again, Kate is told to stay well away, and for good reason: another girl’s body has been found.
Kate is determined to connect new evidence to the old to catch this monster before more innocent lives are taken. The trail runs cold when her prime suspect is found dead. But then why is the body count still rising?
The answer is more terrible than Kate could possibly have imagined, and the killer so much closer than she thinks…
MY THOUGHTS: I read Dying Day by Stephen Edger basically in one sitting.
This is a great example of the British crime genre.
The story is told over two timelines and points of view. Amy's starts prior to her death, twelve months earlier, and counts down towards the event. Kate's story is in the present, twelve months after Amy's death, which she is haunted by, her guilt a driving force and coloring all her decisions.
Kate is a very strong character, following her own path irrespective of the restrictions placed upon her by her superiors. But it seems that no matter what she does, the solution to the riddle of Amy's death remains just out of reach.
Dying Day is full of twists and turns, and although I had my suspicions as to the identity of Amy's killer, I had no idea of the motive nor the means, and my suspicions were not confirmed until right at the end.
Fast paced and action filled, Dying Day is a solid ☆☆☆☆ read.

I have not read the 1st book in this series but it can be read as a standalone (though I will get myself a copy). Kate is a strong character and won't let anything stand in her way. She does not always follow procedure and it has often got her into with her superiors. This is a well written, fast paced, gripping read. There are a few curve balls thrown in to keep you guessing. I never saw the final curve ball and it was good we got closure at the end.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Stephen Edger for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book by Stephen Edger that I’ve read. It’s one more police procedural with a damaged DI. Kate Matthews has been unable to get over the loss of her DC, Amy Spencer, a year ago. Amy was involved in an undercover procedure that went wrong. Kate moves from London to Southampton after being blamed for Amy’s death.
Kate is driven and follows her gut and instincts rather than her bosses. She is convinced that the serial killer that took Amy’s life is now targeting girls in Southampton. Despite recovering from a bad car crash, she refuses to take any time off even when ordered to do so. I just couldn’t get into her. I kept expecting her to use a little common sense. Or treat those that care for her decently. She places her job above everyone and everything in her personal life. She is a mother of a young daughter and barely has visitation rights. She says she wants to be more active in her daughter’s life but does nothing to prove it.
The book also offers flashbacks to Amy’s life leading up to her death, told from her POV. They mostly involve the investigation and search for the serial killer of young single women whose only connection seems to be their use of dating websites.
This is an ok mystery but nothing special. I wasn’t torn to drop everything to read it. I didn’t particularly buy into the premise. I had sussed out part of the ending but there were lots of twists at the end I hadn’t seen coming. Unfortunately, several scenes in the end just didn’t come across as believable.
My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
Wow! I did not see that ending coming at all. I loved this book so much. I really enjoyed the first DI Kate Matthews book but this one manged to top it. I loved that we learn about the case from her past that brought her to the team that she is with now. I love that she never gives up and goes with her instinct. I love that she is strong female character and I can't wait to see what Stephen Edger had in store for her in book 3. A big thank you to the author and Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book to read and review.
Flipping heck I just loved Dying Day it’s much darker and than the first book in the series, and do you know what? that’s just the way I like a crime thriller to be, make of that what you will! Dying Day is the second book in the Detective Kate Matthews series, personally I think this book could be read as a standalone, but if like me you prefer starting a series at the beginning it’s definitely worth reading Dead To Me first. Stephen Edger draws the reader in with a prologue that leaves you desperate to learn more and keeps you in his clutches until you reach the “OMG I never saw that coming” conclusion.
Dying Day has an extremely spine tingling premise, Young women brutally murdered and left naked, exposed, in public places. As the body count rises Detective Kate Matthews is determined to connect the killer to past crimes which resulted in Amy a young Detective being killed whilst under cover hunting down the killer. If I’m honest, I disliked Kate’s character in Dead To Me but I was surprised to find she’s actually growing on me. Burdened by guilt over the death of Amy, she is determined to seek justice for her by hook or by crook. Her feelings of guilt give her a sense of vulnerability that was lacking in the previous book.
I love the way the author has written this book alternating chapters that move between the current investigation and the POV of Amy before her death, the two threads work well and there’s a constant sense of unease reading about Amy, and the chapters around the police investigation add a sense of urgency to the plot. Perfectly paced, the author misdirects the reader at every opportunity which I just love in a crime thriller. I don’t know about you, but I’m left feeling slightly miffed when I guess the killer early in a book! Crime series are two a penny so for me to continue to invest in a series, each book has to be better than the last, and I’m thrilled to report Dying Day is a worthy addition to this series and I’m excited to see where the author goes from here.
DYING DAY is the second book in the Detective Kate Matthews Series by Stephen Edger. After reading and enjoying the first book in the series, *DEAD TO ME”, I was very eager to start the next book in the series, “DYING DAY”, and see where it would take me.
'Dying Day', a police procedural thriller, follows a young detective Amy, who one year ago was killed working undercover trying to trap a serial killer, who'd been targeting young women. DI Kate Matthews had been head of the investigation team, at that time and couldn’t forgive herself for Amy's death, and letting the killer get away. Kate vows to not rest until the killer has been caught! Kate moved from London to Southampton after being blamed for Amy’s death.
When the body of a young woman is found in the boot of an abandoned car near the Southampton Docks, Detective Kate Matthews is ordered to stay well away from the scene.
When another girl’s body is uncovered days later with similar bruising around the neck, Kate starts an investigation of her own, determined to connect new evidence to catch this monster before more innocent lives are taken…
Then mysterious sympathy cards left with the families of the victims finally lead Kate to the twisted individual from her past.
The book also presents flashbacks from Amy’s life leading up to her death, told from her POV. They help with filling in the gaps and providing more clues on the status of the investigation.
This is a well-written gripping crime-thriller that will have you racing to the end to reveal the identity of the killer. Did I guess right? No, but the evidence was all there to piece together this jigsaw puzzle.
My thanks to Bookouture via Netgalley for my copy. Now plan to start reading “Cold Heart”, the third book in the Detective Kate Matthews story.
Fast paced, a read with anticipation, emotionally charged thriller, police procedure.
Just imagine a colleague of yours who was killed pursuing a serial killer. Part of your team? Would you maybe rightly or wrongly feel some guilt? Would you want justice?
So when this case is reopened Detective Kate was told to stay well away. Remembering Amy who was killed at the hands of this perpetrator, could, or rather.....would she obey orders.
Kate does thing sometimes her way and not always the orthodox way.
I really enjoyed this read. I read it quickly as it was really a page turner where you are eager to see what’s going to happen next for sure.
Having not read book 1 this didn’t make any impact on my not reading it, so I’m guessing it’s equally as good as a stand-alone.
If this book is anything to go by, I’m sure going to follow what he writes next. I’m on it.
The first Kate Matthews novel was a bit of a mixed bag for me, but when I started Dying Day I instantly became gripped to the story and couldn’t read quick enough. Unfortunately after about the 50% mark my interest waned because I could clearly see where the story was going to go.
Kate Matthews is still haunted by the unsolved murder of her colleague Amy. She is full of blame for Amy’s death, and her determination to solve the case seemingly knows no bounds. Kate is a complicated character. I love the renegade detective that goes against their superiors but there’s just something about Kate that makes me feel uncomfortable. She’s almost unstable in how she behaves, she can’t see past solving Amy’s murder and allows it to affect her personal life. After the events of the first novel she wants to see her daughter more, yet she’s only mentioned in passing here once and Kate is constantly making reckless and dangerous decisions. Stephen Edger does go some way to explaining some of Kate’s thought processes and all of this aside she is a character that I enjoy reading about but her unpredictability made me feel uneasy at times.
All of that said I felt the plot was strong. Despite the over-recklessness, it was easy to understand why Kate became so determined to ignore her superiors because it seemed like they were just unwilling to listen to any of her ideas, believing her to be too close to the case to think coherently enough to solve it. I enjoyed the investigative element of Kate going off from place to place attempting to solve present day murders that were eerily similar to those that occurred in London when Kate worked there. I enjoyed the resolution to one of these murders because I didn’t see it coming. We also follow along with Amy in the days before she died and I enjoyed those chapters. It was a bit spooky reading about her knowing she was going to die, and it helped me to understand the relationship between her and Kate more and to know just why Kate was so fiercely protective of her.
Now, I don’t know why this keeps happening. I’m not trying to call myself some kind of super crime fiction detective where I work out the plot chapters in advance, but the fact is it’s happened with quite a few books that I have read recently. Here in Dying Day we meet a character and just straightaway I got this vibe from them that they were the killer. I didn’t work out the whole of the plot involving this character but the majority of it I did and I was disappointed because of how obvious it was to me and how once again it resulted in another cliched ending. These fictional detectives are fantastic until it gets to the end of the novel and they finally meet the culprit and have to fight for their lives. Ultimately I did enjoy the book but was let down by the ending, other than that I was gripped to the rest of the story and would thoroughly recommend this series to crime fans. I can only personally rate a book on the enjoyment I took from a story and working out who the killer was at the halfway point lessens that enjoyment.
I read and enjoyed the first Kate Matthews which left me keen to follow her journey in this next book in the series. I know some people didn’t take to Kate straight away first time round due to her personal circumstances but I really felt I understood her so I was interested to see how she developed further here. And I have to say that although I liked the first book in the series, Dying Day seemed to work even better for me! I loved it!
Kate is still a risk taking, workaholic with a fierce commitment to solving the crimes she’s assigned to (or NOT assigned to as seen with the case here!!). She takes extreme actions, making every step of her investigation part of her own very personal quest to hunt down the truth. Here we are also able to watch the somewhat voyeuristic lead up to Amy’s murder from her own point of view which I actually found quite a harrowing and emotional journey especially as it also added another dimension to Kate, seeing her through another’s eyes and bringing a further understanding of why she does what she does.
This is a fast paced murder enquiry that never quite went the way I was expecting it to go! Just when things seemed to be coming together the direction abruptly changed with a twist I hadn’t seen coming! Stephen Edgar really does love to keep his readers on their toes! The gripping fast paced narrative grabbed me from the start with a storyline that flowed dramatically towards its shocking climax! It suited Kate’s personality perfectly and really brought out her instincts so I think that anyone who didn’t like her so much the first time around will definitely have a change of heart here! I love the way her flaws have now become her strengths making her a much more relatable and likeable character. She’s certainly fought her way onto my favourite female detective list after her gritty and determined battle to bring a serial killer to justice and avenge one of her own team.
Stephen Edger has delivered a top notch crime thriller here that literally had me gasping out loud at one point! He really has outdone himself this time and written a book that became unputdownable with the perfect case for Kate so he could really show what she’s capable of. It worked perfectly for me and it is definitely one I will be recommending! I can’t wait to see what Kate does next!!
So our Kate is most definitely haunted. Haunted by the case that got away, the one she couldn’t solve, the one where she let one of her constables get killed.
After reading Dead to Me, the first Kate Matthews book, I was desperate to find out what had happened to her back in the big smoke of London and forced her move south. So when I read the synopsis for Dying Day, my hopes were lifted that I would find out what happened. Would Kate finally put her ghosts to rest and solve this elusive case?
I really enjoy Stephen Edger’s writing. He writes a complex crime story and in this case he interweaves multiple threads seamlessly. Throw in some clues and red herrings and what you are left with is one cracking crime thriller. Even though this is the second in the Kate Matthews series, I personally don’t think you need to read Dead To Me first however that too is a cracking crime thriller, so I do recommend you get your hands on it as well!
My heartiest of thanks to Bookouture for my copy of Dying Day.
When the trail grows cold and the killer might never be found...
DI Kate Matthews is driven. She has a serial murderer on the loose and no one believes her. After she's put on suspension, she's the only one still convinced that there are links between the murders in London and in Southhampton. Young women, brutally murdered and left naked, exposed, in public places. Kate has ideas, but is running out of time and people who want to help her. Thank heavens that the brother of one of the dead girls, Finn, is willing to get involved.
This is fast paced, intriguing and a suspenseful police procedural. I missed the first in the series but could easily identify the character of Kate as she is a protagonist very common in the genre. She doesn't play by the rules and is often on the outs with her superiors. She's reckless and pretty much a hot mess, but her intentions are genuine. Kate has good instincts, but in this case, she's thrown for a loop with a surprise twist that some will see coming. I enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-book ARC to read and review. This publishing company has become my "go to" for new books in this category!
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers, Bookouture for this review copy, given in exchange for an honest review. Also thank you Kim and Noelle for organising this blog tour!
This is book number 2 in the Detective Kate Matthews series. It can be read as a standalone, but obviously to understand the story it does make sense to read the books in order.
Detective Kate Matthews is still after the person who killed Amy, a young undercover detective, one year ago. She’s also on the pursuit of another killer who is killing women in a similar way. After Kate is told to stay away from the investigations and suspended, there is no one else who believes that the murders are all the work of one person. She carries on investigating behind her superior’s back, with help from fellow detective Laura, and Amy’s brother Finn. Can she find the killer?
This is, ashamedly, my first Stephen Edger book. I have yet to read book number one, but will definitely be going back to read it. Not just to see if it’s as good as this one, but also to understand the story behind Kate Matthews. You either love her or hate her. She gives no thought to rules and regulations, she drinks, is ruthless and stubborn, is obsessed with her previous cases to the point of pinning paperwork up all over the walls of her home, she lets her young daughter down and finds it hard to maintain a relationship. But….she’s also dedicated to the point of doing anything in her power to make sure the bad guys are caught, and she doesn’t listen to anyone who disagrees with her. Right or wrong, she gets the job done, which in my book can’t be all bad!
The story is fast faced, switching between the two different killing sprees just over one year apart. Also added is Amy’s story from one year ago, leading up the day when she was killed, and the reveal as to who murdered her. I honestly didn’t get the twist until it happened and really didn’t see it coming!
A great thriller which kept the pages turning right to the very end!
It's great being back with Detective Kate Matthews, in this, the second book in the series. I really enjoyed book one, so was eager to get started with book 2. It's great having another series to follow as I love a good detective series. Kate is a great character, flaws, problems, ruthless but doesn't give in, if she wants to do something she doesn't always listen to others opinions first. I can see this becoming one hell of a great series. But I think Kate needs to start thinking of others around her and what she is doing to them. Kate feels responsible for the death of a fellow officer last year. She is determined to try and put things right in where she feels she failed her. Even though she's kicked off the case, she can't help but get involved. She's certainly determined I'll say that much. But why won't people take her seriously, if only they would listen to her, then she wouldn't have to go behind the bosses back. A very well written and well put together book, it will certainly grip you, and it's easy one of those books that you just need to finish this page, then just need to finish the chapter, before you know you're half way through the book. This book had a great start and ended just brilliantly. I need more and I want it now. l
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Kate Matthews is back! She has a difficult case to solve and this is made more difficult by her personal ties to the case. It is a challenging investigation with very few leads, but when things start happening, they happen fast! This an excellent, twisty serial killer book.
I was not very impressed with Kate Matthews' character in the first book in the series. She has grown leaps and bounds since that first book and has matured considerably especially when it comes to her relationship with her daughter. This looks like it will be a really good series, I am very excited to see what Stephen Edger has in store for us in the next instalment. Cannot wait to read the next one!
Detective Kate Matthews has not forgotten young police officer Amy who died at the hands of a vicious killer a year ago. She vows to get vengeance, and to catch every criminal she can.
She is involved in a car chase that ends up putting her in the hospital. She’s supposed to be taking time off while an investigation is going on regarding the car chase. She comes to work anyway on crutches.
Okay, here I have to comment. Kate id stubborn, pigheaded and won’t listen to her superiors. How she has lasted this long in the police department is beyond me. I couldn’t stomach her at all. I did not finish this book.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this book to read.
Senior Investigating Officer Kate Matthews loses her position in London after a young protege of hers loses her life being the bait in a serial killer case.
So Kate moves to Southampton and is now a Detective Inspector, trying to prove herself again. And she's soon on the trail of another serial killer.
To me this was an okay story but I felt the characters were rather stilted and for me there weren't many surprises throughout the book. It was good. It was readable. It wasn't great and that's too bad.
I received this book from Bookouture through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
Now it's safe to say that our introduction to Kate Matthews was a memorable one. It certainly made me rethink my breakfast choices that's for sure. I'll still be having porridge all of next week, I'm not put off my food that easily, but still ... Porridge aside, it also gave us a little insight into Kate's background and the reasons that she transferred to Southampton from a good job in the Met Police, reasons which come to the fore in blinding fashion in Dying Day.
The discovery of a body of a young woman bears all the hallmarks of a case from Kate's past, the one which led to her transfer. A serial killer had been plaguing London, murdering young women with no clear motive or connection. One of her young DC's is sent undercover to try to snare the killer, a decision which costs her life. Faced with the prospect of this being the same killer, and with the anniversary of Amy's death looming, Kate is determined to find the killer before he strikes again.
Almost from the very beginning of this book you are caught up in fast paced, highly emotionally driven drama. From the discovery of the body in the boot, through to the shocking, almost heart-stopping, edge of the seat tension of the ending, Stephen Edger succeeds in taking the reader on one hell of a rollercoaster ride where the stakes, especially for Kate, have never been higher. I don't want to talk much about the plot, as I think you need to read and connect all the dots for yourself with this one, but believe me, it's a cracker and with so many twists, drops, loops and turns that it will keep you guessing right until the very end. Talk about adrenalin pumping. Alton Towers eat your heart out.
Being book two in a series, we already have a history with Kate and her team. I have to be honest and say that I wasn't entirely sure about Kate and her methods in the last book. She is a complete maverick and it puts people in jeopardy. And yet there is definitely something about her and I think after this story she is definitely on my top Detectives list. She is determined, feisty, willing to go it alone if needs be but ultimately a really good copper with an instinctive nature. Her relationships are difficult, but there is a great camaraderie with DC Laura Trotter, who is perhaps her strongest ally on the team, and a really loving partnership developing with Ben, even if they don't always see eye to eye. They are characters I can really get behind and am eager to see more from.
Structurally this is an interesting novel. Mostly told in the present day as the investigation moves from the initial discovery through to its conclusion, there are also passages told from the point of view of DC Amy Spencer in the days running up to her murder. It compliments the action, which includes reopening the investigation into her death, and drip feeds in key witness testimony alongside the disclosure and discovery made by Kate. Not only that, but it serves to humanize Kate and highlight the truth of what happened back in London. Amy is a woman not unlike Kate, but her absolute awe of her boss is clear through this particular narrative. In many ways she is similar to Laura and it is clear that Kate is respected by both women for more than just her rank.
I absolutely loved every minute of this book and surprised myself by racing through it in one evening. It really is that kind of book. So if you are looking for heart-thumping, adrenalin pumping action, tension which is at times off the charts, and a great cast of characters who make you both frustrated and happy in equal measure, give this book a go. I'm certainly glad I did and I can't wait for book three.
So the thriller kick continues and after reading the first book in this series, Dead to Me, I couldn't wait to dive into this one. Stephen Edger was a new to me author and I saw the first book of this series on my twitter feed and couldn't help but pick it up. UK crime series are one of my favourites and add in the serial killer aspect that DI Kate Matthews seems to attract and I was totally sold.
This book continues some of the same plot lines as Dead to Me while also a fresh case is presented. As I said before, Kate is a maverick and trusts her gut rather than strictly follow the rules. Kate always puts herself in danger and the fact that she is in and out of the hospital on a regular basis is both a show of her courage and stupidity, but you cannot help but want her to succeed and prove herself.
This book didn't give me the back story on Kate's story that I craved in book one, but this one is on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I did not see the big twist coming, but did have inklings towards the others, but Stephen Edger totally had me sideswiped at the end.
As I said with Dead to Me, I appreciate this authors writing style and am glad to see that continued. Not overly gruesome, but with enough included to bring the reader into the story, the story was succinct with no unnecessary stuffing which kept the plot fast paced and action packed. I cannot wait for March and Cold Heart.
‘You said yourself: desperate people are capable of so much more.’
I loved this book and will definitely read more of this series. Detective Kate Matthews has a strained relationship with her superiors but she’s determined to find the murderer responsible for her colleague’s death. Despite being told to stay out of the investigation she refuses to listen and throws herself headlong into the case and steps on a few toes! More women are being murdered and Kate is certain they are linked so continues to investigate. I was really surprised at the identity of the killer and loved the ending of this book. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me a copy to read and review.
I absolutely adore Stephen Edger's writing and was eagerly awaiting this book. And wow! It is an absolute masterpiece. Pacy, tense, edgy and thrilling, this is crime writing at its absolute best! Every page gripping, the writing spare and purposeful. I loved this book, I am a great fan of this author and I cannot wait for more from him!
Dying Day by Stephen Edger is the second instalment in the Detective Kate Matthews series. A body of a woman is found in an abandoned car near the docks, but Detective Matthews is ordered to stay away, leaving her to begin an investigation of her own. 4 stars
Dying Day is the 2nd book in the Detective Kate Matthews series. I did not read the first book and this book could easily be read as a stand-alone. However, I recommend reading the first book before reading this one since this is a continuation. One year ago, Detective Kate Matthews was on a serial killer case who already killed 4 women. Even though there was no evidence linking the victims, Kate was adamant it was the same killer. The last victim was a junior detective, Amy, that Kate had taken under her wings and mentored. Present day, in another city, Detective Matthews is still on the hunt for the killer and she will not quit until she finds him. With 2 new murders, Kate has no doubt that it is the same killer.
I had a problem with Kate's character right from the beginning. She's disobedient and rebellious. She's in a high-speed chase and her superior is telling her to back down before she kills someone. However, she ignores the order and pushes her car to 90mph instead. Her superior tells her to go home and rest and instead she commandeers a murder case. She has a junior detective helping her while going behind her boss' back. And there was one point she was leading the witness. I wanted to stop reading right then. And yes she solved some cases, but it was more by chance when she was making wrong judgement calls. She should have been fired for her misconduct.
There were some twists in the story but I was able to figure out Amy's killer early on in the book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Stephen Edger for a copy of "Dying Day" in exchange of an honest review.
This is the second book in the series featurng Detective Kate Matthews. It can be read as a standalone but I think the book can be enjoyed better if you know the background to the characters. Kate is moving on from the events in the last book and is now in Southampton. She was transferred there following the murder of her younger colleague and Kate is still feeling responsible for her death, as she let DC Amy Spence go undercover whilst trying to solve a series of murders. The main thing that is eating away at Kate is that the case was never solved and she in convinced that all the deaths are connected. The book is written mainly in the present time but there are also chapters going back six months previous written by the dead Detective and leading up to her death. This book was a fantastic read, there were so many twists and turns that keep you guessing right until the end and what a surprise that is! I gave Stephen Edger’s first book in the series, Dead to Me, five stars and would give this book more if possible. Do not miss reading Dying Day, just leave yourself plenty of time as you won’t be able to put it down. Can’t wait for the next one in the series. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book..
Book 2 in the Detective Kate Matthews series, Book 1 was fantastic book 2 blew book 1 out of the water and into space! Dying Day refers to the day one year ago when a young detective Amy Spencer was killed while working an undercover operation that went very wrong. The killer was never caught and Kate Matthews blames herself. As ever, Stephen Edger keeps you on the edger (sorry not sorry) of your seat. This is a very fast paced twisty book that was much much darker than the first instalment. I cannot wait for book 3
Simply, Wow! I did not expect that ending at all. I really enjoyed the first book, and was eager to get started with the second book and it didn't disappoint. It's great having another series to follow as I love a good detective/police procedural series. I loved the characters, the storyline and the authors style of writing.
Took me a whopping 6 days to read, so clearly not overly keen. Tried to emulate DIs Kim Stone and Geraldine Steele but can't pull off the badassery. Still, the end was a surprise.
