A Vast and Gracious Tide

Rate this book
A murder on the tranquil beaches of the Outer Banks puts two strangers on a path to uncover the truth

Caden Wallis has suffered several devastating blows that have left him reeling. He’s lost friends and now his girlfriend to the ravages of war. He arrives on the Outer Banks for one final mission—to thank the woman who sent him a quilt while he was recuperating from his wounds at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

McKenna Dockery knows all about loss. She lost her mother at a young age, and her father has never been the same since he came home from his own war. She juggles the family business, her ailing father, and an aging grandmother. Much to Caden’s surprise, she is the quilter—not some elderly lady. The quilt was something she’d begun for her future husband but shipped to the military hospital after the tragic death of her fiancé.

When a man is found snared in a net and murdered on McKenna’s property, she and Caden must work together to bring the killer to justice. Each must learn to trust the other, or no one will be safe in the tangled web of conspiracy, greed, and deceit lurking in the tidal marshlands of the Outer Banks. A nor’easter, a sea turtle named Cecil, and a surf-crazy hound named Ginger conspire to bring these two searching hearts together through the vast and gracious tide of God’s love.

Major Squeeep Alert!!!! So major that my brain is a scramble of euphoric reader bliss so I'm giving you fair warning -- this review may end up being a bit of a fangirling ramble. Cue our stalwart hero, Caden Wallis. Excuse me while I clear my fainting couch because even writing a review about him creates havoc with my equilibrium.

Caden is in a dark place when he arrives on the Outer Banks. He takes brooding hero to a whole new level. He alternately broke my heart and made me spitting mad -- sometimes in the same sentence! What a complex man and the more Carter reveals about him the more complicated things get. Deliciously infuriating about sums him up.

Which keeps McKenna spinning in a vortex of emotional angst. These two together are exasperating perfection. Fair warning: you will want to have a pre-approved venting process in place before you begin reading. Otherwise you will be in danger of damaging the spine of your book from repeatedly throwing it against a wall out of sheer frustration. I found a stress-reducing yoga session or a brisk walk around the block to be tremendously helpful. :-)

This is the kind of book that takes days to read because you can't stand the thought of it being over while, at the same time, dying to reach the happily ever after you're hoping for. Trouble is, there are so many detours to that end that a genteel, emotionally fragile reader such as myself (no eye rolling) must take the time to pause and digest certain scenes. Perhaps even re-re-re-read particularly toe-curling ones (first kiss alert! thud!) All this takes time, so adjust your calendar accordingly.

I haven't said anything about McKenna yet...perhaps because, if I'm truthful, I'm a bit jealous. I mean, she did get her man in the end (no spoiler alert since this is the kind of romantic suspense that guarantees readers a HEA.) And while I enjoyed living vicariously through McKenna, it was kind of a let down when Caden turned to her, not me there at the end. I mean, couldn't he see how vested I was in him? How much I cared? And wasn't I completely and totally on his side (even when he was being his most obnoxious) right from the very first page? Humph -- I can tell you McKenna wasn't! She was her own kind of stubborn. And the wall she built around her heart? Well, only an ex Green Beret could break it down.

And then there's the suspense. A slow build, lots of twists and turns but I armchair sleuthed my way through with the best of them! In fact, not wanting to brag or anything, but I was a good clip ahead of Caden and McKenna as far as figuring things out. So much fun to feel validated at the end. I may have lost the hero, but I'm thinking of opening up my own Armchair Sleuthing agency. Well, with a friend who is also an excellent literary gumshoe.

A truly magnificent read!

PS...this really shouldn't be an afterthought but I did warn you how rambling I'd be. Lisa Carter has done a tremendous job with the inspirational thread in this novel -- from the title tie-in to the very real and raw struggle to find God in the midst of the impossible. Powerful and memorable.

Take a trip to North Carolina’s Outer Banks in Lisa Carter’s A Vast and Gracious Tide! With characters in need of healing and mysteries in need of solving, it’s a story with more ups and downs than the ocean waves crashing upon the island shores.

McKenna Dockery stumbles upon Caden Wallis, wounded in body and soul, on the beach and cannot resist her natural instinct to rescue him. Their connection is undeniable from the start, but his arrival suspiciously coincides with occurrences of murder and arson—with the threat of danger at every turn, the two must question who can truly be trusted.

I enjoyed A Vast and Gracious Tide so much. Every time I opened up the book to keep reading, I couldn’t help the smile that ended up on my face. I just fell in love with McKenna and Caden and kept rooting for them through their struggles, doubts, and dangerous interactions. Sure, Caden’s growth (or lack thereof) frustrated me many times, and I disliked McKenna’s indecision in her love triangle (even though her actions and responses make sense within context), but I cared about these characters and wanted the best for them, of course. Theirs is a fun, uplifting, sweet story to read.

So, if you’re looking for a contemporary book to read, full of mystery and romance, I recommend A Vast and Gracious Tide. It’s a good one—and perfect to take to the beach with you, too!

". . despite the ocean breezes, white sand, and gorgeous sunsets, death had come ashore."

McKenna Dockery looked death in the face twice in just one day; once as she gazed upon the countenance of a life-weary soldier and then again as she stumbled upon a water-bloated corpse bobbing along the shoreline of Hatteras Island. Neither were pretty, but at least one of them had a future, if he would just choose to take it.

Caden Willis arrives on Hatteras Island with just one goal; deliver the blanket to M. Dockery and then walk off the end of the pier; literally and figuratively. He could never have imagined how one chance encounter with a lovely seaside dancer would change his course of navigation. She just wouldn't let him go. As Caden cautiously approaches life as an islander, he is accused of being involved in a dangerous string of crimes, which many believe to be the handiwork of a international drug cartel. He certainly can't leave McKenna now, can he?

There were so many parts of this story that were easy to love, and then there were places where the reader, characters, and story line subtly diverged . . . . .. but it by no means ruined anything for, "Here is love, vast as the ocean, Lovingkindness as the flood, When the Prince of Life our Ransom, Shed for us His precious blood."

The author has given a story of survival, although there are times when we wonder who will.
A loss of a mother, a fiancé, a comrade, and a canine hero, and more, and the ravages of war bring us to Hatteras Island, a historical suspense that will keep you page turning.
While the story takes place in the present day we are transported back to WWII, and previously unknown facts are presented.
A very interesting story with a bit of romance, and then we are thrown into some murder mystery, along with finding out whom you can really trust.
Loved how the findings worked out for the betterment of all, and you won’t be able to leave this one!

This was an enjoyable romantic suspense where the suspense will keep you engaged and guessing till the end.

I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense part of the story.

Caden felt very realistic with his struggles to settle back home after the war.

The romance part did irritate me a bit with McKenna making wrong choices when their was clearly dinting between her and Caden.

All in all a good romantic suspense.

I was presented this book as a mystery and while there are mystery components in it I’d say the book is far more romance than mystery. This necessarily isn’t a bad thing and for the most part I enjoyed the novel. I thought the book was well written and it flowed really well. I thought the book did great with plot development and it kept me on my toes. I also have the praise the book on focusing on a character who obviously suffers from some PTSD and is a wounded vet. Not a lot of books have main characters with them in it and his struggle and triumph were very inspirational to me. I can’t speak to how realistic his plight was, but in my opinion it was written very well.

However, I did feel that the book had a bad case of “insta-love” and that the characters weren’t as developed as they could have been in my opinion. I also didn’t like the random jumps in time and I feel that the author didn’t focus on the mystery component as much as she did the romance, which would have worked better had I known more about Caden and McKenna.

Verdict: Overall, it’s a wonderful action-packed romance with a hint of mystery in it. I would recommend if you’re into romances or books that focus on military vets.

This is a Christian romantic suspense that has everything that I like in a Christian romantic suspense-lots of action, great scenery and cast of characters, romantic tension and a mystery to solve, including murder. Set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, we can envision the small town life that includes the ocean, surf and sand, breezes and the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. It has history that includes Blackbeard and Ocracoke Island as well as history that goes back to World War II and the Germans that were in the waters off the mainland. What does all the history have to with this story?
Caden Wallis lost a leg in Afghanistan along with his CO and his K-9 partner and a girlfriend, not interested in a cripple. He grew up in the foster system and never really felt loved. The Army meant everything to him. The only thing that he has left to live for- to return a quilt he received in Walter Reed Hospital to the person who made it-M. Dockery in Tuckahoe, NC. After that, he wants to die.
McKenna Dockery has worked in the family restaurant since her grandmother's hip surgery. She formerly was in a dance troupe. She was also engaged but her Navy fiance died in wreck a week before the wedding. When she stumbles upon Caden on the beach, she knew that he was on a bad tract and needed help. She takes him under her wing, against his wishes but when he is accused of murder and her grandmother hires an attorney, he has no choice but to work at the restaurant to make money to pay back Grandmother Lovey.
Someone is setting fires in the small town and killing people and it all appears to be tied to drugs or something illegal. Her police chief father Walt and her friend Bryce are kept busy investigating. As the danger gets close, Caden gets close to McKenna and other locals and does his best to keep an eye on McKenna and family. Bryce and Caden come to blows again and again. Bryce has an attachment to McKenna beyond friendship and Caden is too close.
This story is a great action packed mystery that goes beyond the danger, fires and murder and delves into faith-seeing ourselves as Christ does-worthy of His love and depending on Him.

A Vast And Gracious Tide by Lisa Carter is a Christian contemporary romantic suspense. It will have the reader enthralled from the start.
The novel is about loss and survivor's guilt. Our veterans went to war for us but on returning, a part of them is always left behind, wondering 'what if?' Bonds are formed with men and dogs in their units. It is unthinkable to leave anyone behind. Guilt consumes the survivors. "Guilt, even if undeserved, may be the hardest thing to overcome."
Loss eats up two of the characters. "Stuck between her life Before and an After she was afraid to embrace." We must face our past before we can move into our future.
The novel shows the importance of God. God is not a distant God. He is as close to us as we want Him to be. "He... didn't believe God believed in him." God believes in each and every one of us.
There are some wonderful unique and realistic characters portrayed. The reader can 'feel' the warmth of Lovey and 'understand' the protective nature of Walt. The openness and inclusiveness of McKenna was a breath of fresh air as she saw goodness in everyone.
Healing was a major theme. Some have visible scars, others are hidden but we know One who can heal us all.
An air of suspense and intrigue surrounds the novel. As the crimes and body count mounts up, see if you can guess the perpetrator.
Coming home is another theme. Sometimes home is a physical place. more often than not, home is to be found in a person and His Name is Jesus. There was a wonderful analogy with injured sea turtles. "Sometimes when they're injured, they get lost somewhere along the way. They need our help to make it home." We are all travelling through life and sometimes we need to come alongside others to help them come home.
A wonderful, entertaining tale with life lessons and godly wisdom for us all.

I have read most of Carter's novels and she remains one of my favorite romantic suspense authors. I like that she takes me to new locations where I learn about the history and culture of the area.

The location this time is the Outer Banks. The plot revolves around three issues: PTSD, the history of German submarines during WW II, and the area's current use by nefarious and dangerous characters. Carter has included an Author's Note so we know that U-boats were off the coast during the war and her historical aspects of the novel are a possibility. That the plot dealt with three major issues did mean that it was a bit complex. A more satisfying plot for me would have concentrated on just two issues.

I felt the major characters in the novel were a bit over dramatized. Caden struggled with meaning in life after loosing his leg to an IED. McKenna suffered from deep hurt caused by the death of her fiance. I liked many of McKenna's character traits but, like Caden's, felt they were larger than life. I thought the revealing of obstacles in their relationship and then getting over them was a bit repetitive. And the bad guy, well he was characterized to the point I knew who he was early on.

That being said, I did enjoy the novel and do recommend it to readers of Christian romantic suspense. There is a good presentation of the healing that comes from a relationship with the Lord. You'll learn about the culture and history of the Outer Banks, possible current illegal activities, and you'll be exposed to a good bit of suspense.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

While Lisa Carter has written several books, A Vast and Gracious Tide is my first introduction to this author. I was pulled into the story from the first page.

Filled with tension, a plethora of suspects, and memorable side characters, Carter reels readers in and keeps them on the hook until the final chapter. The setting became its own character, immersing me in the sea, sand and tight-knit community on the outer banks. Then there was the tiny bit of World War II history I was unaware of previously.

The push-and-pull Caden kept up with McKenna annoyed me a bit toward the end, but it did manage to highlight the importance of getting your heart right with God before you can accept the gifts He gives us in life. I had an inkling of the villain from pretty early on, but uncovering whether I was right and learning the motivation is expertly revealed over the course of the story.

Overall, an enjoyable romantic suspense, heavy on the romance. And I will be picking up more books authored by Carter in the future.

"Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review"
A good romantic suspense story with a cast of characters and a setting – Outer Banks, North Carolina - I loved.
Caden, the wounded veteran hero, is a broken, defeated man who slowly begins his journey from despair to healing in Tuckahoe.
The heroine is sweet yet determined to break Caden’s armour.
I didn’t get that interested in the suspense plot in the story, I felt it took away from having the romance more fleshed out and the villain twists seemed a bit far-fetched.
Caden’s initial (serious) issue was solved too easily and there were things I didn’t understand: his need to leave in the end seemed to some extent unjustified and delayed the narrative without bringing novelty.
I'm grateful to the publisher, Gilead Publishing, and NetGalley for providing a free copy

What a wonderful summer read-or any time! This one ticks all the boxes. Faith, romance, danger, flawed but redeemable characters, sand, surf, and salty sea air. A happily ever after doesn't hurt either.

This is the first book I’ve read by Lisa Carter and I’ve found another wonderful romantic suspense author (one of my favorite genres)! A Vast and Gracious Tide is a well-written novel with a nicely planned suspense plot, layered and multidimensional characters who are engaging and lovable, and a touching yet realistic thread of hope, faith, grace and forgiveness found in God. Anyone who enjoys contemporary romantic suspense will love this book.

Caden is a broken war veteran who has hit the bottom of life. He’s emotionally, physically, and spiritually battered yet is still full of integrity, commitment, honor, and loyalty. When he meets McKenna, he’s ready to throw in the towel but McKenna’s kindness, gentleness, goodness, generosity and unending faith in him pulls him back into this world and helps him see who he really is. There is fantastic dialogue between Caden and McKenna; their friendship and romance is slow, fraught with grief and guilt and delicious tension, and oh-so-satisfying when they both realize what they have with each other.

The story addresses several difficult issues, especially concerning our veterans. The suspense component and the mystery with whom the villain is are good but takes a backseat as the characterization and development of Caden and McKenna’s relationship takes front stage in the story.

I can’t wait to read more of Lisa Carter’s books!

A Vast and Glorious Tide
Lisa Carter

Have you ever picked up a book to begin reading and gotten hooked before you read one word of the first chapter? That is what happened to me with Lisa Carter’s A Vast and Gracious Tide.

I always begin a new read with the front cover; today’s graphics makes the front cover one of the first two things I notice about a novel, with the second being the author. In beginning A Vast and Glorious Tide, I quickly moved through the copyright page, to the dedication page and on to the map of the Outer Banks. A few more pages, including the lyrics of an old hymn, Here is Love, and I’ve reached the prologue. Bam, I’m hooked.

Two broken people; one is just living, the other ready to quit living at all.

Three years ago McKenna Dockery was engaged to the love of her life when wedding plans are abruptly halted due to the tragic death of her fiancé.. Grieving, McKenna moves back home to the Tuckahoe, a small island in the Outer Banks, to run the family restaurant. Having grown up in Tuckahoe, McKenna spends a lot of her time on the quiet shores of the island. In an opening scene McKenna has rowed to a neighboring island, Yaupon Island, despite her father’s strict reminders to stay away. Something spooks her on this visit, someone is watching her. She quickly returns to Tuckahoe, saying nothing about the experience, continuing with her work running the family restaurant and worrying over her father, the sherriff. She lives, going through the motions.

Caden Wallis is a broken man. He lost himself; his leg, and his girlfriend while overseas serving in the military. An IED exploded taking his leg; his military dog; the group leader, and his girlfriend in one horrible, life changing moment. After a stint at Walter Reed, Caden makes his way to the Outer Banks with one purpose; one thing he is determined to follow: quit living.

McKenna and Caden meet early one morning on a secluded beach on Tuckahoe. She is dancing, remembering the days when her plans included a husband and a top notch dance studio in the city. He is there to complete his journey. Caden spies McKenna, slowing down his activity to watch her graceful movements. Out of the corner of her eye, McKenna sees Caden and somehow she intuitively understands his purpose on the beach. They meet. They talk. Both understand without words that they each are deeply wounded. She offers him a short term cook position at the restaurant; he accepts. Each attempting to help the other.

A dead body is found on McKenna’s property and Caden, under suspicion as a newbie anyway, is arrested for murder, except he didn’t do it. Warned not to leave the island, Caden and McKenna are pulled into the investigation. Murder and arson. Stalking and booming. Notes and espionage.

Whew! This is no ordinary trip to the beach!

A Vast and Gracious Tide is my first book by Lisa Carter and she knocked my socks off! Which is fitting vernacular as this book is chock full of "Southernisms" like "for the love of sweet tea". So many of these expressions had me smiling and I felt at home right down to my southern roots.

The setting of Hatteras Island is one that's familiar, and I enjoyed the references to other landmarks like the lighthouse and Ocracoke ferry, even though the town of Tuckahoe is fictional. I could see it all in my mind's eye and feel the breeze off the ocean.

The characters of McKenna and Caden could not have been more realistic and believable. McKenna the eternal optimist, "She staked her life and heart on the fulfillment of that which she had yet to see. Choosing, despite the void, to trust while her dreams remained unfulfilled." And Caden the pessimist who had endured so much hardship growing up he expected nothing from life, "..he couldn't afford hope. He wouldn't survive it's loss. Because that's what always happened. In the end, hope left."
The chemistry between these two was so strong it felt like it was charged with an electrical current! One of my favorite lines, "That boy looks at you like you're a bowl of ice cream on a July day and he'd like to eat you with a spoon." Whew, only one of many intense moments!

The secondary characters of Earlene and Lovey, strong southern women, are as compelling as those of McKenna and Caden, and that's saying something as those two were hard to top. In fact, the entire cast of characters had such well-defined personalities, it felt as if they were all real people I had only to drive down to the Outer Banks to meet. Such vivid portrayals Carter has drawn!

As much as I enjoyed the setting and loved the characters, the mystery and suspense of the storyline was fantastic! It was like riding out a hurricane with all the nervousness and fear that goes with that. I don't know when I have read a romantic suspense that was as enthralling or as exciting as this book was! I was on the edge of my seat and holding my breath quite a few times.

The inspirational thread that reminds us all that God is the one who mends broken hearts and brings us to our true home in Him was very emotional and touching.

I can't recommend A Vast and Gracious Tide enough. This book has made my favorite list of 2018 and is one I won't soon forget. I appreciate Lisa Carter's terrific storytelling and Gilead Publishing for making a copy available for review.

A Vast and Gracious Tide by Lisa Cox Carter

A murder saved his life…

Caden had lost his leg in Afghanistan, lost his best friend to the same IED, lost his girlfriend as a result of his “deformity”, lost his ability to serve in the Army, lost his purpose in life, lost his hope. He had everything figured out and was on his way to drown the ocean of misery that was his existence in the waves of the sea.

As you can imagine, Caden underwent a significant spiritual journey and a complete change of mind about his life. His transformation from the gaunt (both physically and especially spiritually and mentally), hopeless man to one with purpose and, most importantly, a relationship with God unfolded in a most natural and beautiful way in this story.

A Vast and Gracious Tide is such a rich story, containing just the right mix of mystery, suspense, action, romance, spiritual lessons and even a touch of humor. It was so well written and was certainly a page-turner. The setting of the Outer Banks in North Carolina allowed for the plot elements of sunken ships and unauthorized entry into the country of undesirable elements and substances.

I loved the way McKenna seemed to instinctively know to allow Caden to do things for himself and not treat him like a cripple. Even from the very beginning, she didn’t try to help him up from the sand or coddle him in any way. They alternately fought and capitulated to the strong attraction between them, each one fearful of being hurt.

Though I had a premonition about who was responsible for the crimes around the island, the hints were quite subtle. There were details that I would never have dreamed up, which of course, made the story much better than if it was predictable.

Here are a few more of the things I really liked about the story:

McKenna’s grandmother, Lovely, calling Caden “Dear Heart” – for some reason this touched me greatly
The scene where he had to go to a beauty shop to get his hair cut – gasp!
Sea turtle rescue
The quilt that brought them together
McKenna dancing
Learning WWII history in the Outer Banks

This has been a great story to read. The author delivers a great cast of characters with intense drama and intrigue. I loved Caden right away. He has a lot to deal with since his accident while serving his country. His adjustment to a prosthetic leg has really been hard on him. He finds himself on Hatteras Island with a mission to complete. What does he need to give to someone?

McKenna is a person everyone loves. She has a big heart and is always rescuing animals and sometimes people. I loved how she reached out to Caden and helped him find a place to belong even if it's for a short period. He is determined to do what he set out to do and then leave. But where would he go? The author makes Hatteras sound like a picturesque place that I would love to visit.

The story takes on a mystery when bodies start piling up and drugs are being smuggled into the area. I wasn't surprised that Caden would be the first suspect. After all he is new to the community and there happens to be a certain person who wants him gone. I loved how the author talked about several issues that veterans have. PTSD is not easy to cope with and I liked how the author brought attention to it in the story. Caden's childhood was another interesting part of the story. I know what it's like to not have parents who love you and my heart went out to Caden. He is guarded with his emotions at times and that causes tension between him and McKenna.

The action heats up when buildings start burning in the town. Danger is just around the corner for McKenna when her life is in danger. Can Caden save her in time? Who is behind all this chaos going on in town? I am very pleased with the author's ability to write with such depth and intrigue. I was kept on my toes and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I loved watching Caden start to trust people and believe that he has a purpose in life.

The excitement builds when something from a different era brings danger to the town. What happens when rumors of a submarine from the 1940s start circulating in the town? Is there treasure on the submarine worth killing for? This is a powerful story about trust, redemption, self worth and love. The ending is wonderful and one you won't forget. We all belong somewhere but sometimes we have to let go of the past, to find our future.

" You have to grieve what you lost before you can embrace what you still have left."

Lisa Carter is a new-to-me author. I have seen her books for some time and have been anxious to read one since they look exactly like what I would love. I was right! A Vast And Gracious Tide is an outstanding novel. It has the right blend of romance and suspense with a good dose of a historical mystery. For fans of the romantic suspense genre, this book is highly recommended!

A Vast And Gracious Tide is set on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I have never been there, but Carter’s descriptions of quaint small towns, beautiful beaches, and historic lighthouses moved this bucket list destination up to the top. Carter filled the fictional town with quirky and lovable characters. Main characters McKenna and Caden are opposite in many ways. McKenna has clung to her faith throughout the dark times in her life, while Caden believes there is no way a God can or would want to heal his brokenness. I loved how they complimented each other as they grew in their relationship with each other and God. The chemistry between the two is sizzling sweet. Carter took her time in unfolding the love story and the mysterious goings on in Tuckahoe. But for those who love adrenaline-laced action, this book delivers. I was turning the pages at a furious pace as the danger increased. Caden was in the Army Special Forces, and his training came in handy when the two must confront the bad guys. I also loved how the author took historical facts from the WWII-era and blended them into a modern-day mystery. The faith thread is naturally woven throughout the story. Never preachy, it was, nevertheless, a moving part of the characters’ development. McKenna’s view of faith is revealed early on in the novel and defines it — She staked her life and her heart on the fulfillment of that which she had yet to see. Choosing, despite the empty void, to trust while her dreams remained unfulfilled. When the pain and loneliness were at their height. When, perhaps, faith meant the most. (p. 24.)

I really loved A Vast And Gracious Tide. It certainly makes me want to find more books by this talented author. It’s perfect for your beach getaway or staycation.

Highly Recommended.

Audience: adults.

McKenna is a young lady who has loved and lost--her fiance, that is. With Shawn's death, McKenna said goodbye also to her love of dancing. The joy of that went with the loss of Shawn. Instead, she throws herself into helping with the family restaurant and helping take care of her grandmother. A man named Bryce, a local policeman, decides to insert himself in McKenna's life. While she respects him and is fond of him, there's just no spark there.

Caden is a wounded veteran who is new in town. Caden has come to return a quilt that was given to him while he was in the hospital. When he and McKenna meet, Caden is drawn to her. However, being the newcomer, he is quickly blamed for a recent set of murders happening in the town. Bryce is the main one pointing a finger at Caden.

Author Lisa Carter did a nice job fleshing out Grandmother Lovey, and I specifically enjoyed the character Earlene--she was a dear. There is a scene in a beauty salon that I really enjoyed--lots of detail and humor in that scene.

I felt that the conflict between the two main characters was a bit forced at times. The sudden explosive tirades between them confused me a little--I would have liked to have seen a little more building tension prior to the tirades.

Lisa did a tremendous job of describing scenes. I could easily picture in my head what the area looked like. She clearly pays attention to detail!

A Vast and Gracious Tide was a bit too predictable, I felt. Maybe that was Lisa's idea--I'm not sure. It was early on in the story, though, that I knew who the problem was and what was going on with McKenna's father. However, recognizing the mystery didn't detract from enjoying the story. I do feel, though, that there could have been a little more mystery thrown in there.

A strong feeling of healing is interwoven into this story. The main characters both have their share of hurt, anger and trust issues. A gentle but effective (and gradual) transition into recovery and healing takes place between them.

If you enjoy clean mystery/suspense with some romance thrown into the mix, check out Lisa Carter's A Vast and Gracious Tide.

Much to Caden’s surprise, she is the quilter—not sTome elderly lady.

McKenna and Caden are both struggling with loss. McKenna the loss of her fiance and Caden the loss of his leg and his fiances rejection. Cade's solution will be very final. McKenna is just living one day at a time. The book was very enlightening about the effects of life altering changes and how the public react and how that effects the person it happened to. This was a very good story about love and redemption. I highly recommend it. I have never read a book by Lisa Carter. I look forward to reading her next one.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

Caden lost a leg in Afghanistan, and the phantom pain has become more than he can deal with. But he has one last thing to do before he takes a long walk on a short pier: to return a quilt he received in hospital to the maker. This quest brings him to Tuckahoe, and it is on the beach there that he meets McKenna - who challenges him in so many ways that he begins to take a new interest in life, and in her. But they each have their own issues to face - Caden his desertion by his long-time girlfriend after his injury and his childhood in and out of foster homes, McKenna the death of her fiance just before the wedding. And in the background, an arsonist and a murderer have been attacking those McKenna cares about - and she may be the next target. Will McKenna and her family make it out alive? And will Caden overcome his fear of loving others and decide to stay?

This story sounded interesting from the description, but was even more so in practice. It grabbed me from the first page, and held my attention throughout. With love and humour, tenderness, suspense and sorrow, this well-written story ticked all the boxes for me to thoroughly enjoy it. I'll definitely be looking out for more by the author.

Characters: Felt realistic, and I enjoyed watching them grow. A couple of background romances in addition to the main one, and all handled well.
Storyline: Well worked out, with a good, satisfying ending.
Content and language: Clean, with only a limited amount of non-graphic violence.
Message: Inspirational, McKenna has a relationship with God and encourages Caden, but it is in the background - no sermons or anything like that.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Sometimes you read a story that you think is very near perfection, and this is one of those. This clean, Christian romantic suspense novel by Lisa Carter is a well-written, emotional ride. We see most of this story through the viewpoints of the two main characters, Caden and McKenna. Although their situations are different, both are struggling with great loss and doubts about their futures. As their lives intersect, they have crucial decisions to make that will decide their next steps in life. The setting of the Outer Banks is essential to this story and I felt as if I’d actually been there through the author’s descriptions of the islands. I loved the supporting cast of characters and their interactions greatly added to the story.

The storyline is full of action and almost non-stop suspense. There is a physical battle in this book between good and evil forces, but the real underlying struggle is spiritual: Does God know us and care for us? Is His redemption for real and for everyone that will come to Him? The author does a great job exploring both of these crucial questions without ever once being “preachy”. The book’s title comes from a line in the sing “Here is Love” by William Rees: “Through the floodgates of God’s mercy flowed a vast and gracious tide”. As you read Caden and McKenna’s search for God’s love and grace, you’ll be encouraged to see that in your own life God is “Without measure, full and boundless, Drawing out my heart for Thee”.

There's just something about romantic suspense novels that keep me coming back for more. I am always on the lookout for a new author to enjoy in this genre, and I have definitely found one here. Lisa Carter is a fantastic writer who pulls who into the story line immediately. I'm going to be completely honest - I instantly liked Caden. I felt bad for him really, so it was more of a sympathy liking. But somewhere in the story he changed my mind about him. I started getting annoyed with him actually in the way he did things and handled things. Then near the end, we were back on good terms. I have to say that usually I like the hero from beginning to end, but I actually enjoyed this back and forth with Caden. To be honest, it kept me hooked into the story more to see if he was going to become the person I wanted him to be from the beginning.

The Outer Banks was the perfect setting for this suspenseful story. I typically hear about love stories set in the Outer Banks, so this was a welcome change for such a familiar setting. Lisa Carter kept the story line alive the whole time, adding powerful punches here and there just to make things interesting. I will say that it was no surprise who the true villain was, and I would have like there to have been some twist in the end about that. However, it did not stop me from enjoying the book and getting to know Caden and McKenna better! I think romantic suspense fans will fall in the love with the story.

This story shows the difficulty that an injured war vet faces when returning to civilian life. Caden comes to Tuckahoe with one mission in mind but meeting McKenna takes him on a journey he hadn’t planned for. McKenna is determined to help Caden even though he doesn’t want it. I really enjoyed following the relationship development between the two of them. McKenna is still getting over her fiancé that passed away 3 years ago, and struggles with the possibility of ever loving someone else. She has put her dreams on hold to protect her heart. She finds herself beginning to feel things for Caden that make her want to risk her heart but she fights this constantly. Each time Caden and McKenna began to take a step forward in a relationship between them some issue would surface and they were back to the beginning again. This began to feel a bit repetitive making it feel like they would never move forward.

On the suspense side, there were times that I found the historical facts to be a bit confusing to follow and found myself getting a bit lost with what was happening. I felt it was pretty obvious who the bad guy was fairly early into the story, and when his motive was revealed it felt a bit unbelievable.

I did enjoy that the story highlighted that true healing only comes from having a relationship with God. He will help us overcome anything. Caden realizes his need for God and begins to accept God’s plan for his life. McKenna learns to open her heart again and follow her dreams. I enjoyed the family feel of the diner and looked forward to the interactions between McKenna and Lovey. (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)

I haven't read a lot of Lisa Carter's romantic suspense, but A Vast and Gracious Tide sounded interesting, so I jumped at the chance to read it. With the fast pace of the suspense genre, I was hoping for a fast pace novel. At the beginning of the novel, the story does focus more on the developing relationship between wander Caden Wallis and McKenna Dockery than the introduction to the suspense. As the novel moved along, it started to show some suspense elements, but it wasn't up to the speed I was used to. Even though the plot and romance really didn't grasp my attention, the writing was top notch. Carter does a great job at inviting me into the Outer Banks and seeing and smelling the surroundings. Similarly, Carter does a marvelous job at intertwining the romance, the mystery, and a little bit of a historical mystery well. The story flowed without really any hesitation on her part. Caden, the hero, does transform and realize his need for God by the end of the novel, which is my favorite part of any novel while McKenna finally learns to open her heart again to love and maybe will be able to seek her dream of dancing again. I highly believe fans of Colleen Coble, Patricia Bradley, and Irene Hannon would devour this novel.

I discovered Lisa Carter’s books several years ago and have since made it a point not to miss her latest. I was blessed to have the opportunity to read and review a copy of A Vast and Gracious Tide for JustRead Publicity but would have definitely purchased a copy otherwise.

The setting and plot may be different than the previous novels but I can guarantee that the suspense and romance are still top notch with plenty of twists and surprises in store for the reader. In this wonderful story both McKenna and Caden are dealing with the loss in their lives in different ways. A chance meeting brings the pair together in ways that will change their own lives and that of others forever.

At times heartbreaking, the story eventually leads to hope and restoration for its characters. I liked how the author managed to convey the despair and hopelessness often experienced by our veterans of war. We lose too many of these young men to suicide yet so many are unaware of their desperation. I also loved how the words of the much loved song Here is Love were woven throughout this powerful story of the power of Christ to restore broken lives.

This is my first read by Lisa Carter. I really like her writing style. It flows smoothly and you want to just keep reading. She also writes secondary characters that you actually care about!

Caden is struggling. He has lost his friends and part of his leg to war. Then, his girlfriend dumps him. He’s not sure if he wants to live or not. Enter McKenna. In my opinion, she is a bit pushy and can be too outspoken. Normally, not the kind of personality I like to read. But, in this story, it works, because that is the only way to get through to Caden and help him heal both physically and mentally.

I liked Caden immediately. He was struggling at first, but once he got focused, he was a strong character and a great help to McKenna and her family. Due to his past, he was also struggling with God. I loved how the quilt tied into God’s plan for both McKenna and Caden.

What drug this story down a bit for me was sometimes McKenna acted based solely on her emotions, which led to some bad decisions. She also frustrated me with her reaction, or lack there of, when it came to Bryce.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

This is a book by a new-to-me author. I found this story to be quite attention grabbing, and filled with unexpected twists and turns.

The setting was great-Outer Banks--a place I've never been to, but want to go visit sometime. And I loved the characters. McKenna and Caden. At first they did nothing but antagonize each other, but you can sense the attraction immediately.

And then there's the ties into WWII stuff...I don't want to give any spoilers, but all of this was very intriguing.

And the murders. The arsons. McKenna seems to find herself close to being in the middle of everything that is happening. And she is in danger numerous times as she tries to figure out just what is going on.

If you like Christian mystery/suspense, I encourage you to try this one!
