I was going to use this as my cozy bingo read, but I can't finish it. I cannot take 400 plus pages of this.

You would think it would be good. It almost sounds a witchy version of Golden Girls meets Murder, She Wrote. But nope.

I mean, I knew I was in trouble when I started - take for instance

". . . a sudden, fierce gust of wind whipped at the newly budded tree branches and sent a spray of gavel dust up into the air, exfoliating the front of the three-story Victorian and the back end of the old jalopy parked in the dirt driveway" (1)

or

"The pale, wrinkled skin on her outstretched arms sagged from just below her elbows to her armpits, her short elastic sleeves doing little to carry the burden of the excess baggage" (1)

or

"Arched white trellises covered in pink and purple clematis and lavender-shaded wisteria anchor themselves centrally" (2)

or

"With her nose still point to the clouds, Kat opened her eyes and ever so slowly dropped her chin." (3)

(I'm not sure how the nose stays pointed at the sky the, to be honest).

or

"She had only a few minutes to get out of the garden before the magic fertilizer with the rain coming down." (3).

There also are the following questions - if the majority of people in the town are okay with witches, then how is saying you went to witch school a conversation killer? How can never being married means you have no family or friends? If the funeral director let you leave the funeral with a woman's ashes, you should not be surprised when you discover that she named you in her will. If you had to leave town for years, why did you run a diner there? I mean, how could you do that? If you leave in the town for, say, 40 years, and then left for a few years, say 5, shouldn't you know at least the old stories?

The Golden Girls as witches. The story is funny and fun. The plot is a bit contrived but the characters are delightful. I enjoyed the situations and the mystery. I liked the potential romance and the ending. I will read the next in this series.

I do not see how so many people can give this book such high ratings. The interactive behaviors are unrealistic and repetitive, the attempts at humor are never funny, the plot bogs down constantly, the characters are shallow. I found reading it to be exhaustive and thought how much better it would be to watch golf on tv--something I find numbing and dull. That is how bad this is.

Okay, we have five old lady witches who went to witch school together. They have been fighting for years and don't talk to each other, two against two with the fifth one dying in her garden during a storm, which triggers a reunion of the other four. The way years of hate are put aside is unrealistic and the lack of blaming anyone or feeling any ill will is odd. To get back to five women they introduce into their coven Hazel, the wisecracking mother of one of the witches, who attempts I think to be like Sophia on The Golden Girls but fails miserably, often in a crass manner.

These witches don't use their magic very often and spend a lot of time preparing to meet for coffee, arguing about meeting for coffee, meeting for coffee, and then interacting with waitresses taking orders. It is so boring! The magic is introduced inconsistently. I understand who this book is trying to target, I just don't believe people I know in that demographic would be entertained by such insipid vacuity. This book needs some magic to make it better!

Let me tell you, I had the most interesting and bewitchingly funny week reading That Old Witch by MZ Andrews. Each day that I read about the five elderly witches who were trying to “sleuth” their way to discover who murdered their long-time friend, I can’t stop myself from grinning and laughing so hard. This coven is giving a whole new meaning to the adage, “Age is just a number”.

Hazel Prescott may be the oldest among the group, but she’s the liveliest, loudest and funnest of them all. Yes, she’s so much fun to be around, wreaking havoc to the village and causing misery to her daughter, Gwynnie. Speaking of the witch, Gwyn is the exact opposite of her mom – she’s so uptight, a little prude and in control. Next favorite of mine is Loni Hodges, most hysterically mysterious and paranoid among the five. Her disguises had me laughing all the way down to Aspen Falls and her affinity to cats made me love her even more. Phyllis Habernackle and Charlotte Bailey, they’re a cute tandem, both have families of their own and a cat to boot, but I still have yet to discover more about them.

So far, so good, really. Their little coffee coven got me up and hooting three nights in a row; if not for work or for my kids, I could have finished reading the whole book in one night. I really love the antics and the misadventures that these old witches had been through. Imagine a very old grandmother hot-wiring a car in the middle of the night while her companions are on a stakeout – now that’s really something, right?

Will be spending the next few days reading about Hazel and her “trip” to Las Vegas, so hang on tight, witches!

Fun through and through

If you like your witches snarky and the mystery not too easy to solve, you'll love this book. The coven's witches may be a little older than some, but they're all the more hilarious for it. Hidden in the fun are wonderful portraits of friendship and loyalty that will warm your heart.

Liked the story and the characters from the start and actually didn't have the mystery figured out until near the end of the book, which was a nice surprise. I'm intrigued now to read more from this author.

That Old Witch:The Coffee Coven's Cozy Caper

This was a FUN book to read. I actually laughed out loud at times. These five witches seem to either cause trouble or be in trouble most of the time. How they get out of trouble and right the wrongs that have been done keeps it interesting. Hazel, the oldest of the coven, will crack you up!! I gave it a five star rating. I find it one of the best and most fun cozy that I have read in quite some time. I recommend it to be read by young and mature adults because of Hazel's mouth!!

Not the worst book I've ever read but far from the best too.

I tried, I really did try to like this book. I lost track of how many times a character " barked" or "bellowed". There are several sub plots that don't seem to add to the story but appear to be there to fill space. I have only made it halfway through the book and am having difficulty trying to force myself to continue. I don't have a clue as to why the grandchildren of one character call her by her first name though it is alluded to but she "doesn't have time to get into it now". There is one character who is convinced the FBI is spying on her. She keeps accusing another character of wearing a wire, she hates the color blue to the point of demanding people remove articles of clothing and has various other irritating quirks. I could go on for some time trying to list more convoluted issues but will settle for barking that this is a difficult book to follow and bellow that I doubt I will be able to finish it.

As a reader of the Witch Squad series, I expected to be enthused about this new series that features the grandma generation of the Witch Squad girls. Somehow it fell short of expectations in my opinion. While I enjoyed the mystery aspect about the deaths of 2 witches, what I didn't like was the "personalities" and "conversations" the older witches had throughout the book. They seemed mean to one another and disrespectful of the person's feelings. Loni and Hazel received the brunt of this verbal nastiness, but everyone called each other out in unpleasant words. For a group of friends, they seemed about as friendly as a pet snake. I prefer a little more kindness towards friends in life and in reading.

Nice read.

I read this book over the past 2 days. The characters, except for being witches, are entirely believable. Hazel reminds of of my own mother who passed a little less than a year ago. She too was feisty right to the end and always spoke her mind. Can’t wait to read next book.

Old witches never die

Not true....someone is killing them in Aspen Falls. The first to die was a friend of theirs and they start out as enemies but come together once they discover their missing book. Sleuthing and witchcraft don’t come naturally for them, thus mayhem and mishaps occur. Easy reading.

I just finished reading That Old Witch! by MZ Andrews. It's the first installment in the "Coffee Coven's Capers" mystery series, featuring senior sleuths (and witches!) Phyllis, Char, Loni, Gwyn, and Gwyn's mother, Hazel. It's set in the same universe as the author's "Witch Squad" series, and some familiar characters pop up.

After the untimely death of Katherine "Kat" Lynde, her four BFFs from the Paranormal Institute for Witches are called together for the reading of Kat's will. Unfortunately, the friends suffered a falling out years ago. Phyllis and Char are no longer on speaking terms with Gwyn and Loni. Forced together by Kat's will, the four of them discover that what they've been feuding about all these years--the "theft" of the spellbook the five of them were meant to share--was not what they were led to believe. Turns out, Kat had the spellbook all along, and kept telling the others that this witch or that witch refused to relinquish it.

Once they have tentatively reconciled, the four friends, along with Gwyn's mother Hazel, learn that Katherine was murdered and that her killer stole the spellbook. Determined now to get the book back as well as get justice for Kat, the four of them team up to solve the mystery. When another local witch is murdered, and Hazel later disappears, the pressure is on to find a killer before Hazel becomes the next victim.

The book was charming. I enjoyed meeting the characters, including Char's husband, Vic, who has been turned into a Chihuahua. Loni was a recluse, refusing the leave her home for fear the FBI would find her, but no explanation was given to why. It was obvious she was a few fries short of a Happy Meal, but it would have been nice to know why she believed the FBI was after her. In addition, Hazel was a bit over the top, in my opinion. I enjoy reading about feisty senior citizens, but Hazel went beyond feisty and into the realm of toddlerhood, complete with temper tantrums. At that point, her behavior was no longer amusing.

The best thing about this book is the cast of characters. They are kooky, fun, and have a myriad of issues! That being said, there were a lot of plot problems with this book.

For starters, the whole premise is based on a group of old witches who for some unknown reason suddenly stopped using their magic after they graduated? No logical reason for this. The powers that they have would have been used by anyone on a daily basis! Then, you have the ridiculous notion that a group of 4 fairly intelligent women would be completely bamboozled by their friend Kat, who lied to each of them in turn about who had the spell book they were supposed to be sharing. Did not ONE of these women think to ask that person DIRECTLY for their turn with the book when Kat told them who had it? Come on, women talk to each other so I don’t buy that at all. It was a good idea, it just doesn’t make sense in this scenario.

Then there was the investigation itself. The witches’ powers seem to only come into use when it’s super convenient. I mean, why didn’t the premonitions show up earlier in the book? Why were these witches so bad at magic that they didn’t know simple spells for conjuring water, but they did know one for easing a panic attack or healing rather serious injuries? While funny in places because of their rusty magic skills, it just lacked the believability that needs to be present for a book containing magic and witches. The suspension of disbelief was absent in a lot of ways.

The whole book moved a bit slowly for my taste. I considered not finishing it at several intervals but I wanted to see what happened. There was one good misdirection in the plot but in general the women seemed to mostly stumble onto clues accidentally or suddenly have a premonition rather than legitimately investigating the murders. Overall, there were just so many issues with the plot and premise of the book that I will not be reading the next one.

I loved this book. I am a big fan of the authors Witch Squad series so jumped at the chance to listen to a new series. So glad I did I loved it. Just like the witch squad series but older (kind of like the adult version, in both the characters and in the jokes) and it contained a lot of the characters from the series too. You don't need to have heard about the witch squad to enjoy this book but I think it helps add a smile to your face when a character you know is mentioned. This book also contains some great and whacky characters that you just can't help but for in love with. It is a nice mix of personalities from worry wort Gwen, to handful Hazel, to loony Loni and all have there own individual powers , that make them such a great team and coven. The mystery is also good and keeps you guessing as to who the killer is, the use of magic is fun and gets them into trouble just like the teenagers. Definitely want the author to write more books in this series because I just want get enough of this fun and quirky group of friends.
With the death of Cat can four witches put aside there differences and find the friendship they once had? Aspen Falls is about to find out. Cat has left the four warring college friends her house with instructions that they are not allowed to sell it. Finally altogether for the first time since there college days the four ladies begin to unravel secrets that have been keeping them apart and one thing helping them reunite is the idea that there beloved friend was murdered and there is a killer roaming around Aspen falls killing witches. Can they find there friendship and there love of magic to help them stop a killer before he strikes again?
I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job giving each character there own unique and distinctive voice.

Laugh out loud, witchy cozy mystery.

I enjoyed reading every bit of this book. The author created the most lovable and quirky characters.

The story doesn't start on a high note. Kat's death opens the door to reunited friendships and a mystery. Priscilla, Char, Loni and Gwyn come together to solve the case of Kat's murder before it's too late. The years apart have definitely come with baggage for each of the ladies. For Gwyn that's her grumpy, opinionated mother, Hazel. As another another witch is found dead, the race begins to catch the killer before he strikes again.

Each of the "old witches" adds to the humor of the story. It makes it an enjoyable page turning story. My rating for this book is 5 stars because it's a light read. The characters are relatable and funny. It's a story that caters to lovers of the supernatural and mysteries. In the end you become invested in finding out more about these ladies lives.

A quick read about a group of friends who are witches:

“Gwyn and I were roommates. And then it was Char Adams and Kat Lynde together, and Phyllis
Habernackle and Auggie Stone.”

“If you can’t trust your friends, who can you trust?”

“Did she want to hold that grudge for the rest of her days?”

“Wrinkles are like underwear. They creep up on you when you least expect it.”

“Saying you’re only having one tequila shot is like saying you’re only going to eat one M&M.”

“I want to be buried facedown and naked, so anyone who didn’t like me can kiss my ass.”

“Didn’t your mother ever tell you that you are what you eat?” “Of course she told me that. Why do you
think I eat French fries? I wouldn’t mind being tall, thin, and French”

Still laughing!

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Oh my goodness! What a laugh this book is. Think witchy Golden Girls. The characters are definitely memorable, especially Hazel. She's a woman who says whatever she wants & apologizes to no one. She will have you smiling and laughing through the book.

4 old friends have been angry with each other for years. Old grudges are brought up after the death of another friend. Witches are being murdered. It's up to the Coffee Coven to find & stop the witch killer.

Recommended for those who enjoy cozy mystery books and great humor.

Seniors with magical stopping powers pull on the pants of SuperSleuth

A great start to a new series. Similar to the Witch Squad but with seniors in the main role and much better plot. The characters are diverse and go from the outright cantankerous to paranoid and doormat. All however are witches and when faced with what appears to be a witch serial killer join forces to out the culprit. Some great dialogue and situations lead to an entertaining read that will have you guessing until the end. A terrific read.

Paranormal geriatric sleuths

Gotta love quirky old witches who solve mysteries. These old gals have fun and stay one step ahead of the reader. This author knows how to spin a good yarn. I could not put it down. Characters and situations are fresh and believable. I love the mother/daughter conflicts and the richness of the relationships within the story. Witches are being killed. Why and by whom is up to our aged coven to discover. Come along for the ride. It’s worth your time.

This book is one to listen to if you want escapism. It is silly, funny... actually very very funny in parts, and light hearted. I enjoyed it. I likened it to The Golden Girls in a form of older witches. It had me laugh out loud in places and it was great. The characters are brilliant and so well described that you clearly picture them in your mind! This is superb writing and is a skill! Looking forward to the next!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I have provided this voluntary review.

That Old Witch! by M.Z.Andrews is the first book in the Coffee Coven's Capers series. After falling out over ownership of a spell book, four old friends are reunited when their friend dies and they learn that they had been swindles. As they hunt for the book they learn that their friend had been murdered for it and they set out to find the killer. An interesting mystery but I felt it was way too drawn out and I did not particularly like any of the characters. Hazel particularly was just rude and obnoxious. It read more like a childrens book.

Witches on a mission

Entertaining cozy mystery with older characters. The group of witches all went to school together and one of the group died. They discovered she was murdered and now they are in the hunt for the killer. Hazel is Gwyn's Mom and she is a hoot. Lonnie is the crazy one with all of her disguises. There is some reminiscing from when they were in school together and catching up since they haven't been together for many years. Love the older characters and eccentric personalities.

Good friends good witches

Really enjoyed this story. The town has more than its share of witches and someone doesn’t like it. When Kat is found dead and her will is read four friend must come together for the reading. What did Kat do—they haven’t spoken in years. This is a great story of family and friendship. I recommend this book—the author calls it a caper but I call it a friendship story.

Suspenseful. Funny!

This story has everything!! Wonderful characters you can't help but love. Suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat. A mystery that makes you want to fiercely protect your lowest friends. Heartwarming moments that make you smile. And funny parts that will make you laugh so hard you'll not be able to read for a few moments! Looking forward to reading the next in the series!

A witch of a read!

Wasn't sure I was going to like the book as it took me a while to engage with the characters. Not sure why but I kept flashing to the Golden Girls as "Thank you for being a friend" sang in the back ground. All in all, a very enjoyable read. Truly loved watching as old friendships reformed after many years apart. Hope to discover in the future books why Kat lied to all of the others and kept the spellbook for herself.

I like this book, the women are funny and crazy. Phyllis, Char, Gwyn and Loni were friends in college but all lost touch after a lie was told to each of them that tore them apart. They are bought together by Kat dying from a supposed accident, but clues pile up and the ladies thing foul play was involved. All the characters are funny and I enjoyed this adventure with them.
