Makoto Tateno is an extremely prolific mangaka, having created 30+ series of manga in both the shoujo and BL genres. However, she is probably most well known amongst English-speaking audiences for her yaoi series “Yellow,” published by DMP. She debuted in 1986 with the short story "Yuraete Tamago Boys," published by Hana to Yume.
Ein zusätzlicher Stern für Nostalgie. Ein paar Dinge funktionieren immer noch, ein paar fallen für mich mittlerweile flach... Netter Abschluss der Reihe.
At first Goh is devastated and angry that Taki left him after their only night together. Then realization comes to him that Taki is protecting him, and he’s determined to get Taki back.
this volume was good but nothing compared with the first three…. either way, the ending was great and now i can say that taki and goh’s love story is truly amazing!!!! i officially finished my first yaoi series omg 😳
I feel like a consistent three stars for this series is bordering on the generous side. I hoped that it would improve as the series went on, but it didn't. It had a few decent moments, a few moving moments, but on the whole it proved to be a bit of a disappointment, a bit anti-climactical with the moments of promise never really leading to anything very special. The three stars for the earlier volumes were given in the hope that things were going to get better, but in light of the fact that it didn't, or not significantly, I'd be more inclined to downgrade the ratings for the first two volumes to two stars. I found this fourth volume to be rather hard to follow in many places - I couldn't keep track of who was thinking or saying what, couldn't keep pace of what was meant to be going on exactly. Is it because I haven't mastered the art of reading manga? Or has something been lost in translation? Or is it poor story-telling and poor illustration? Often the illustrations puzzled me and I wasn't sure who was being depicted because it seemed like faces which looked identical were meant to be representing different people. If I ever buy any more books from this publisher it will probably be done so with very low expectations and only at very low prices.
The fourth book, and the conclusion. I wanted this books to go on a little longer, maybe see more of Goh and Taki's relationship over trivial things and how they got on after finally coming together. Alas, not to be, but it was still a good ending to the series. The art is beautiful, and for some reason I love my manga men to look all soft and feminine. All long lines and long hair too.
As I said in previous reviews, I actually finished these a few days ago before I left for the holidays so I've had plenty of time to think them over. I really like the story line here, which was what attracted me to my favorite manga of all time, "Fake". If you liked that one too, you will probably enjoy this one. The romance is well done and the story leaves you wanting more. Definite recommend, and four stars for this book and the series as a whole.
I can't believe I haven't added this one yet. My favorite yaoi series to date. Go and Taki are partners working for a borderline-legal black-ops organization. Go's in love with Taki, who's straight. Admittedly, some of the cases are almost incomprehensible, but Taki's backstory is compelling, the characters are layered and the art (of course, b/c it's Tateno) is amazing.
The most appealing thing to me, though, is that Tateno doesn't write these guys as the typical uke-seme relationship. There are no power imbalances here, no non-con head games or weird co-dependency; just two guys figuring out their relationship. In between getting kidnapped and having gun battles and ripping off the yakuza. It's awesome.
I liked that Goh is out-and-proud, but then I also liked that there was some ambiguity to things like gender and sexuality throughout the books.
Both Goh and Taki are confident, sexy and badass. Together? Even hotter, plus we get some vulnerability. The relationship builds really well over the four volumes. I found it hard to stop reading, because I wanted them to finally get together.
Pretty sure Mizuki is an odd psychopath of sorts. Interesting he'd focus on the "man" part of Taki's rejection, and not the "killer" part. Mizuki certainly doesn't come across as trans in any familiar sense, and I couldn't quite decide whether that made me uncomfortable. Michiru's gender bending was more believable to me (and quite touching).

Plot contrivance or no, the emotional stakes get very deep in this story. The two protagonists are apart and it’s obvious the separation is taking a drastic toll on the both of them. The plot shifts convincingly between Taki and Goh as they try to deal with the ruthless assassins Mizuki and Katsuro. Complications arise as other characters get involved and Taki and Goh’s past intertwine. The series comes to a spectacular conclusion with sex, face-offs, gunplay and dramatic reunions just too crazy to be believed. But it all plays out with tenderness and heart and a more-or-less convincing happy ending.
Compared to the climax of the plot, the ending of Yellow wasn't very spectacular. But I'm satisfied that Goh and Taki were okay in the end. I even forgot that the employer's daughter was still alive, so that was a nice surprise. It was a nicely wrapped ending, but not spectacular. Overall, the art is very lovely for this series, the story is neat, and the yaoi is tasteful. One of the best yaoi series out there, but no longer a favourite since I'm not into this genre anymore.
