Set in the South of Italy in the 1980s, Inspector Visco is an honest Italian cop swimming against a tide of corruption and criminality. In this case, a simple murder throws up many suspects for Visco to sift through but only one has motive and enough hate to carry out this brutal stabbing. As always with a John Tallon Jones story, you are kept guessing until the very end and are introduced to a host of believable characters in a beautiful but sleazy world of cops, villains and victims. The Lady from Rome is part of the Inspector Visco series.

As a keen fan of this author’s previous work, I was eager to read his latest offering; I was not disappointed. From the first page I was transported to the atmosphere of Southern Italy where nothing much seems to happen on the sun-drenched streets in the relentless glare of the sun, but there’s plenty going on behind the closed doors and shuttered windows, including murder, lust, love and deception. I enjoyed the slow creep of this story where a whole cast of fascinating characters is gradually and skilfully introduced leading me to suspect each person in turn as the plot thickens. By the end of the book, I still hadn’t guessed who done it but I’d thoroughly enjoyed the journey. The Italian atmosphere was wonderful, the characters interesting, especially the indomitable Inspector Visco, and I would like to read more on this theme. Bring on the next Inspector Visco story.
Excellent read and one that will keep you guessing. Set in Italy, Visco is a rather unusual cop in the style of commissario Montalbano, ot Maigret. Classic read from a great author who always delivers
