If there was a yearbook for the Ramone's Rock 'N' Roll High School, Breda Perlin's L.A. Punk Snapshots would be it. Packed with great black & white photos of punks--both musicians and fans alike--these images are full of nostalgia, energy, and emotion. Adorning the iconic photos are quips, quotes, and memories from a variety of contributors (including the author), filling the white spaces like your favorite punk-rock yearbook notes. Along with pictures of her punk friends, Ms. Perlin features candid photos of punk legends like Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie Sioux, The Damned, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, John Lydon, T.S.O.L. and more. A fantastic time-capsule of LA's punk era. And the conversion from paperback to eBook looks fantastic! A must-have addition to my digital collection.

L.A. Punk Snapshots has been available for a while as a paperback but I was delighted to see it released as an eBook and having enjoyed Punk Rocker and L.A. Punk Rocker I was keen to download and read.

I liked the format for this book. It is photo and illustration heavy, each picture alternating with a short paragraph, or two, about the punk music scene during the 1980’s. Many are written by Perlin herself but there are also several from friends as well as quotes from some members of the bands themselves.

It would be difficult for today’s youngsters to imagine a time when we didn’t all carry a camera with us wherever we go. They won’t appreciate this authors efforts when as a sixteen-year-old she became a punk rocker and, preferring to be behind the lens, spent her time recording the people and bands she saw. There was no taking many shots until you got the perfect one or being able to view them there and then and delete the ones that didn’t work. You wouldn’t know what you had got until they were developed. There was no digital uploading then either and no saving your photos securely in a cloud. This collection has been kept safe in a box for over thirty years, and cherished, which shows how important they were to this author.

This book is an interesting collection which even if you were not involved in that scene brings many reminders of the way people looked and dressed then. It is made more personal by the addition of so many insights from people around at the time and would be enjoyed by anyone who grew up in the 1980’s or who is interested in music history.

Every page of LA Punk Snapshots is a visual nostalgic walk down memory lane with the iconic legends of Punk rock. The book is packed with original photographs as well as cool trivia. As an added bonus, the author gives us her own take on her journey into that era in several passages, which adds such a great personal touch. Picture yourself looking at family pictures with the author. She enthusiastically tells you a little about each photo and reveals her own teenage vulnerability with each story. Through her passionate prose, it's evident that Punk rock is like family to Ms. Perlin. Veteran Punk rockers as well as those who love good music trivia will savor each page. I'm wondering if the book is available in hardback, because it would make an awesome coffee table book, sure to incite good conversation.

***Making musical history with pictures ***

Brenda Perlin has an eye for talent, and nothing demonstrates this more clearly than her photographs. Her pictures straddle the serene to the intense. Above all, they capture the mood and important figures of the punk era.

I was not a punk rocker, but Perlin’s vignettes and pictures made me wish I had been part of that scene. Living through freedom and excess meant you came out on the other side feeling more alive and connected. It was, without a doubt, an outrageously creative time.

Perlin’s book is a testament to a snippet in musical history that burned bright for a short time, but, oh… what a time it was.

This book made me wish I’d taken more photographs as a teenager and also wish I’d grown up in L.A. Punk looks so good in colour, stuff from the page just pops out at you; pink hair, a tartan scarf, red guitars and lipstick, Siouxsie Sioux dressed in blue, Captain Sensible’s red beret. You could use this book for style inspiration. I bought this book in black and white when it was first available and the colour version has an added dimension of realness and immediacy. I’d love to step into some of these pictures!

If a photo is worth a thousand words, then this is the longest book I've ever read!

This book gives the reader a very personal insight into a time and place that I'll never be able to visit. The photos are amazing and seem to perfectly capture the feeling, taking me there momentarily - perfect for the commute to work!

The title says Snapshots but this book was so much more. I absolutely loved the little detailed notes between the pictures. It was both like getting a peek of the author's diary and getting a reminder of what the Punk Rock was all about.

Highly recommended!

This is one of those books where, if you lived through the punk era (as I did), you are going to want to keep it handy so you can dip into it whenever you feel a tug of nostalgia. It's a great kaleidoscope of images and thoughts of those times. Put on your bin bag and grab a copy.
