Fate of the Drowned

Rate this book
The Empire is shattered. From the northern ice fields to the storm-battered coast, chasms gash the landscape. Hordes of twisted beasts ravage towns and cities, and still, the people riot.

But the prophecies bespeak hope. Bolstered by the newfound, if fragile, peace with Stormshard, Emperor Kostan begins to fortify his rule. Savra, torn between her desire to learn her family’s fate and the duty she feels to her Emperor, delves deeper into her magic in hopes she can answer both calls.

At the heart of the Empire, an ancient seal will soon fail. But Savra and Kostan will fight to the end--and there lies the Empire’s last hope for salvation.

Wow, this series is just epic. I had a feeling I was going to love this installment just as much as the previous installments but boy, I had no idea. This book is such a great conclusion, every time when I think ‘this is the best’ it gets even better. The build-up, the suspence, the details and all, it’s well thought-out and just plain works. To me this feels like such epic fantasy that you know will be epic on screen as well so I do hope these series will get the attention it clearly deserves and hopefully one day be adapted on screen.
If you love epic fantasy this is one for you.
It’s written in chapters that each have a pov, Savra and Kostan being the lead characters but this third book follows more side-characters as well. These chapters all start with a clear notion of the character and the location of said character. This, to me, is a great way of knowing where and when the story develops, with some extra details that could not be told if only Savra and Kostan were to tell the story. And by telling those chapters in the 3rd person, it doesn’t confuse the reader too much, since you know when it’s written in 1st pov, you’re reading either Kostan or Savra’s story. 3rd person pov includes some characters that are a nice addition to the story. So this might be redundant but yeah, I like this story and do recommend these, of course, start with the first book because you won’t be able to follow otherwise.

This will be a spoiler free review.

I enjoyed this finale, let me start there. Overall, this was a good book, a good completion to the trilogy as a whole. I did have a few issues though…well one and it’s kind of an issue I have with a lot of high fantasy/journey books.

The ending never feels truly satisfying.

I often find that in YA/NA fantasy trilogies that the final battle never truly has the emotional weight it’s supposed to. Either the final battle is lackluster and over much too quickly, or its peace talked away.

I can count on one hand how many trilogies that haven’t left me feeling let down, my hopes dashed upon the rocks. Unfortunately, Fate of the Drowned left me feeling a bit dejected. Its Epilogue was a saving grace, in my opinion, and without it I would have been very mad at how it ended. I also feel like the book should have been longer. The whole trilogy came to a close in the last 20ish pages, which is another thing YA/NA fantasy book tend to do. It drives me nuts, honestly. I get anxious and terrified when there’s still so much left unresolved and there are like 20ish pages left in the book. Ya’ll that’s not enough time.

I also think that the long break I took between book 2 and book 3 didn’t help matters, because it was a bit of a struggle to get back into the story and feel those emotional weights that were already in place.

We’re thrown right back into Savra’s and Kostan’s fight to save their world, and everything looks super bleak. The odds are stacked against them, and they’re basically racing against a clock. The world needs to believe that Kostan will fight for them, that he sees them, and they need to know that he’s one of them. When all hope seems lost, what will they do to save the world.

Again, overall, I liked this book and enjoyed it. I was reminded of why I’ve fallen in love with Carrie’s writing. She’s so good at it, and making the world come to life in your mind. She’s so good at creating these wonderfully flawed human characters that make you feel. I’m already anticipating what book of hers I’m going to read next, there are so many to choose from. If you’re interested, you can check out my reviews for Heart of the Empire and Rise of the Storm as well as this Spotlight Post on Carrie. The Broken Lands series is out in whole, so you can pick it up whenever and I encourage you to do so!

This book was a gift from the author. This review is my thank you to her.
This third book picks up from the end of the last book.
The world is in turmoil. Earthquakes and huge rifts have desolated the land everywhere. Out of the rips in the earth spill the riftspawn. Unnatural creatures too terrifying to behold. They are very aggressive and beast like. No one has any idea how to defeat the horrific riftspawn and return them to the void where they belong. These creatures hound and devour humans without pity.

The damage the upheavals caused is extensive and had only just begun when more of the demon spawn attacked the city, of Jalis. Now it is descovered that literally thousands more are on the march, under the control of a powerful mage turned by the Hunger, into the new leader of each of the beast like spawn. On their way to the city, the horde of foul creatures are set upon the locals, killing them without remorse. Now it has become known that they are on the march, the inhabitants must flee if they are to have any hope of survival.

Kostan the Emperor, is a young man who has had leadership thrust upon him at a young age. Not even 20 and in charge of all his people, he struggles to help them against a terrible future he can see coming. A future filled with death if they don't all pull together.

Sacra the spiritist does her best to aid Kostan. She can see with her spiritist sight, the auras of the evil horde and can help warn others whilst the threat is still some distance away. Together they try to save the people, people who barely know them. The people...both atal and prov, need to have faith in Emperor Kostan...it is a strength he can use against Parveld and his evil riftspawn. Parvelds legions of riftspawn and his comminion with the dark power of the, make him a formidable enemy and there are some incredibly vicious battles.

The breach must be closed or the evil riftspawn will continue to flow into Jalis. The rift's seal must be reforged to close the rift, or the earthquakes and colossal damage will only get worse and on top of all that, Deepwinter time is approaching.

This is a story is filled with vibrancy and has a wonderfully woven world of such colour and imagination that its a true pleasure to read. It is by, exciting, horror filled and although it is filled with bloodthirsty battle, it is remarkably readable.

Review of Fate of the Drowned, the third installment of The Broken Lands series by Carrie Summers

The epic series concludes in Fate of the Drowned and it does not disappoint. The horror of the Hunger continued to grow and threaten every living soul of this doomed world. As the tide of monsters is guided towards the last standing army of mankind by a mad mage, Emperor Kostan and Savra must find some way of uniting the people to face the ultimate foe. The action and suspense lead to fearsome battles that have the reader holding their breath in anticipation and cheering on their heroes’ right up to the final climactic battle.

Carrie Summers has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with in the Epic Fantasy genre. Other authors beware. This series makes her shine.

I was given an Advanced Reading Copy of Heat of the Empire in exchange for an honest review. I would recommend it for anyone who loves adventure, magic, danger, tragedy, overwhelming odds, cheer for the underdog, overcoming self doubt, rising to the occasion, and monster armies.

A shattered empire and Savra and Kostan fighting to the end to save what’s left. Earthquakes, rioting, beasts rampant, an evil riftspawn. The odds against them are great but together represent the Empire’s last hope for salvation and they won’t give up. The result is a powerfully fantastic conclusion to Carrie Summers’ The Broken Lands series. This book 3, Fate of the Drowned, really has it all. An epic tale that provides epic enjoyment. What more could you possibly ask for? But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

Parveld is certainly the antagonist in this one, sadly.
Savra and Kostan get separated in order to both fight the "hunger" using their own special abilities.
We see some serious increase in Savra's magic in this one. But we also see her sister, Avill! Her family is reunited to aid Savra in her quest.
I liked seeing the virtues that were used to defeat the darkness and also what compelled the darkness to grow.
Parveld is quite remorseful at the end of the journey and Savra and Kostan win the day!
This was a nice end to the trilogy. I was glad to see Parveld make amends in the end! He really was my favorite character. Just goes to show you, we, none of us are immune to darkness and we must stay diligent to fight the evil in our world.
Great series!

Really Excellent!!! Great magic and sword fantasy story!!!

Great characters in Savra and Kostan. Together they confront and fight against the big bad forces of evil that seek to destroy the world. The climax alone was worthy of the 5 Stars. My only complaint was that the story is a little long and ponderous at times. But the story is AMAZING, all the characters are great and very developed, and the writing is excellent. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author! Happy Reading!!!

A fitting end to the series

Although book two is still my favorite, Fate of The Drowned provided further adventure, love, surprises, and a fitting end to the series. I’d highly recommend this series to any fantasy lover out there.

A little too far

I don't think it was necessary to turn one of the most pure characters into something so evil. I enjoyed the books up until then

Fate of the Drowned, book 3 of the Broken Land by Carrie Summers. Wow, what an epic story! I have never read something so amazing! So beautifully written, so full of twists and turns you'll never expected.

People are in riot, beasts ravages freely and the Empire is destroyed. The question is; can it be saved? And by who? Is there any hope left?

Emperor Kostan and Savra will fight and do whatever it takes to save the Empire. Meanwhile, Savra is desperate to know what happened to her family.

I'm so glad I was a part of this journey, to get to follow the growth of Kostan and Savras as characters. It's an angst filled story, about family, love and following your own road. Even learning to follow your own heart.

I thank the author for providing a copy to voluntarily review.
