Empire of Dirt is better than Rise of the Ranger in practically every aspect, and it seems promising that the steady increase in quality within each book is unstoppable now.

It is frankly incredible how fun to read this series was. Empire of Dirt is the second book in The Echoes Saga by Philip C. Quaintrell. And just as a brief reminder, although The Echoes Saga is in total a nine books epic fantasy series, it is also an epic fantasy series divided into three sets of trilogies. This means that Empire of Dirt is technically the middle book of the first—out of three—arcs of The Echoes Saga. And it did not disappoint at all. Quaintrell took everything good about the first installment, and he polished or expanded upon them in this sequel. Empire of Dirt definitely does not feel like a filler installment of a series.

The story in Empire of Dirt continues from where Rise of the Ranger ended. War continues to ravage Illian, and our main characters from the previous book will have to fight, survive, and rekindle the light of hope in the presence of overwhelming darkness. There are several reasons why Empire of Dirt is better than its predecessors. The first is that there weren't any dull moments in this novel. In my review of Rise of the Ranger, I mentioned that the first 40% of the book felt a bit rough here and there, and I stand by this statement. But I also said the section felt necessary, and personally speaking, I've been proven right here. The first half of Rise of the Ranger introduced more than eight POV characters to follow; whether this introduction was done nicely or unsatisfyingly will be different depending on each reader. However, if you continue to Empire of Dirt, I'm confident that most readers will start to notice the payoff from this relatively rough section. The pacing in is fast-paced, and it is also filled with enough intrigue and depth for the series so far to have a lasting impression than being a simple fun-and-done read.

“You’re both young, so I understand that hope still plays a part in your thinking, but trust me, hoping doesn’t get it done. Sometimes you have to grit your teeth and keep fighting…”

Have I mentioned that it can be refreshing to read an epic fantasy series consisting of—mostly—main characters above 30 years old? If this is a criterion of what you're looking for in your epic fantasy reads, then you're in luck here. Almost all the main POV and supporting characters in the series up to this novel are above 30 years old. And speaking of characters, the second main reason why Empire of Dirt is better than the already good Rise of the Ranger is influenced deeply by the character development of the cast. Seeing Asher's budding relationship and friendship with Faylen, Nathaniel, and Reyna from the first book was great already, but I enjoyed the book further when Asher met the people he befriended during his decades of adventures. Doran Heavybelly, being one of them, is a dwarf appearing for the first time in Empire of Dirt, and this character—despite not having a POV chapter—was pure joy and entertainment. Quaintrell didn't just develop the returning characters, but he also made sure the new characters introduced here could stand as impactful.

Tauren son-of-none or the White Owl is displayed in the beautiful cover art of Empire of Dirt illustrated by Chris McGrath, and the action scenes in his chapters were bloody and exhilarating. The Arid Lands is one of the main settings of the narrative, and Tauren's role in it is crucial. His battles against the Arakesh were incredibly well-written, and I enjoyed finding out how his story and Asher's gang intertwined with each other even though they were in different parts of the world for the majority of the book.

And then there's, of course, Galanor and Gideon Thorn.

“I have to do something, Gideon. I have to save someone. All I’ve ever done is take life and fight and then fight some more… If the elves are left as they are, they will be nothing but killers for eternity…”

Look here. I enjoyed reading Galanor and Gideon Thorn's chapters in Rise of the Ranger. But I totally didn't expect I would find them to become my favorite characters in the series so far. Yes, the third and the biggest reason I enjoyed Empire of Dirt more is because of Galanor and Gideon Thorn's complicated friendship. Their friendship felt utterly real and powerful, and I loved the themes of redemption and the willingness to do good exhibited in their character development and chapters. Oh, and a few more important things to note: Dragons, Dragorn, and more dragons. Dragonrider is a common thing in classic fantasy, but in my opinion, this is rightfully deserved because it will never get old. The feeling of riding a dragon for the first time, or maybe flying and plummeting from the sky at an unbelievable speed like a stone discarded from the sky, always feels exciting. Then there's also the extraordinary bond between humans, elves, dragons to consider. They just felt powerful to read when it's done well, and it is done well in Empire of Dirt. It wasn't only Galanor and Gideon's friendship that became one of the highlights for me, but also Gideon and Ilargo's, and I'll leave that for you to find out for yourself.

“You must have faith and trust in Ilargo. As long as you are together, the sky is your realm too.”

Lastly, the last reason. And this is related to Galanor and Gideon's story: world-building and lore. As I said, the first book felt like a prelude to everything to come in The Echoes Saga, and now we're finally starting to get to the main course. The revelations on the Dragorn, The First War, and the complex hierarchies between humans, elves, and dragons were interwoven seamlessly into the narrative. We also get to learn more about Atilan, Paldora, and Naius. I am so impressed by all of these. Quaintrell's close-quarter combat scenes were vivid, and his prose felt more well-polished and compelling than before.

“When given a common cause, humans are capable of a great many things.”

Empire of Dirt is a big needed step-up from Rise of the Ranger. I'm confident to say and put my faith in Quaintrell as a reader just from reading two books in the series so far. The characters were likable, stakes of the conflict have been raised, the magic and battles were bloodier and bigger in scope, and the chances of The Echoes Saga becoming one of those series that never stops getting better with each book is almost fully confirmed for me now. I am so looking forward to reading the next book, Relic of the Gods, two or three weeks from now. I doubt I can stay away from this series too long now, and I cannot wait to find out how the first story arc in The Echoes Saga will be concluded.

John Gwynne and Ryan Cahill fans need to read this series!

While I enjoyed Rise of the Ranger (Book 1), Empire of Dirt is a significant improvement in quality in every aspect. This book has better pacing, more satisfying character arcs and moments, and is overall, a very enjoyable read. If you enjoy classic fantasy that feels modern, add this series to your tbr! I can't wait to read Relic of the Gods later this year!

3 stars. The plot was engaging enough that I genuinely wanted to find out what happens to our characters, most of whom I liked and didn’t want to see in peril, but the prose just took me out of the story too many times; it’s often awkward and clumsy and generally not very good. I never want to highlight a beautiful section, that’s for sure.

Also, the fact that the plot was engaging didn’t stop it from being too convenient or illogical or underwhelming at times. when the history of the gods and elves was revealed, I wasn’t impressed; it always sucks when a big reveal like that happens and you’re just not feeling it.

But, like I said, I did like many of the characters and was invested in their fate, the 49/1049-year-old ranger Asher most of all, so that’s something the author did well. Caring about characters is ultimately what drives me to continue reading a book, which is probably why I’ll be sticking with the series despite my plot and prose issues, for now at least. It also helps that these books aren’t super long.

Even better than Book 1!

Once again, Quaintrell has taken relatively common ideas (a fantasy world with elves, dwarves, humans, orcs, etc?! How unique!), but executed them in such an entertaining and often unexpected way that I could not stop listening.

There are some awesome new characters introduced, and I was particularly impressed by some shocking plot twists near the end.

I feel super invested in this world, it's inhabitants, and the story. What more could you want? On to Book 3!

The Echoes Saga is highly recommended for any fans of classic Epic Fantasy, but especially fans of Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, and Michael J Sullivan.

I was taken genuinely by surprise by the first book in The Echoes Saga, Rise Of The Ranger. It took a lot of rather stale by now tropes, and did exciting, and fun things with them.

This second book is even better. Greater depth of writing, more character development, some extremely well written action scenes and so much lore, history and mystery is being woven in, I'm genuinely excited to see what happens with book three!

3.75 stars. I think I liked the first one more overall, but I loved learning all of the lore and secrets in this one! I just really love Verda and how expansive this world is, and I am exited to continue on to book 3 and see what else we discover. My favorite storyline continues to be Gideon's and I am so looking forward to his journey. I listened to this on audio (with the occasional chapter on my Kindle) and I think that might have hindered my enjoyment of it a bit. The narrator is very flat and fails to do enough to differentiate between characters and POVs. I would be listening thinking it was still Asher but it had actually switched to Valanis, with no discernible break or change in tone at all. I plan to read Relic of the Gods on my Kindle because I feel like I missed the impact of some of the things that happened in this one due to the narration. But still, I had a good time!

3 stars it may be because of the audio but man the narrator is flat… Story felt over long and a roundabout way to get more people together to just have a big battle at the end… honestly didn’t care for most of the POV and two book in we are still learning why Gideon is even a part of the story. I’m also not a fan of the captive elf queen who is kept drugged and constantly raped over and over again. Could have done without all of that.

Asha and gang continue to be the best part of the story. But they are really the only group of POV that I care about. The owls had promise but still don’t feel necessary to the overall plot. I spent most of my time here wanting to go back to Asha. The drunk old disgraced grey cloak was great though loved him.

Faylen : So be it…😱

Epic/High Fantasy

“You cannot take the blame for your ancestors failings any more than you can take the credit for their achievements.”

While there were parts of the plot that seem clunky to me, and also still a lot of new characters to keep up with- I had fun with this. I’m mainly here for the characters that I do connect with, and enjoy following their storyline.

A good sequel that advances the plot, and offers intriguing revelations that adds depth to the overarching story. The action is relentless, which is further amped by all the machinations of the antagonists. The author also fleshes out two subplots that was introduced in the first book as well, which adds another layer to the story. This doesn't feel like a middle book at all.

Quaintrell carries the readers on an epic journey in this book. We get to see Asher and his companions to retrieve a divine gem, Alidandra in the gladiatorial slave pits of Darkain, Galanor and Gideon in the land of Dragons, and the civil war in the desert kingdom. There's a lot of conflict going on in this book that elevates the tension and raise the stakes. We also get to see Valanis in a terrifying mood, raging across Illian to find a lost artifact to restore the gods. Overall, this was one hell of an explosive ride.

The action was spectacular. Everytime I see Asher in action, I cling to the edges of my reading chair. The characters also undergoes a lot of transformation, especially Alidandra the elf queen. Her plight is heartfelt and brutal, and despite that she remains unbroken. I also enjoyed the interactions between Galanor and Gideon, and we can see how the events changed them for the better. Almost all of the characters go through some hard emotional trauma and conflict that shows their vulnerability.

For the first time, we are also given a picture of how events are transpiring in the elf lands. It seems that the ancient enemy had manipulated and steered the course of events toward a devastating war. I also enjoyed the story of the white-owls, and was able to relate to their plans and schemes. The action towards the end was awesome, as the enemy has passed the impassable gates of Syl.

I'm continuing the third book now, and it's amazing so far. I'm binge reading this series, and it's plain joy and escapism. This second book has paved the way for the big ending that'll usher on a new beginning for all the races on Illian. I'm very much eager to finish the third book and find out how everything is gonna play out. I want to cheer for our flawed heroes.

Unfortunately, I’ve lost interest in the story and the characters. Nathaniel and Reyna’s relationship is so freaking predictable. I’m tired of that love at first sight crap. Asher is awesome but not enough to keep me going with the series.

The second book in the series moves at the same pace, with the fast plot and many action scenes being the main features. But I have the feeling that the author leaves more space for everything else, the development of the characters, the building of the imaginary world, and even the questions connected with reality. New characters are introduced, the plot gets more twists and more interest and even the main feature which is the action scenes here gets a more exciting character. Of course, there are some issues, such as the excessive borrowing of elements from modern successful fantasy works, which of course offers us more familiarity but from a certain point on creates some discomfort. But the main thing is that the author manages to create an interesting and exciting read which makes it binding to continue my course in this series.

Good Follow Up

3.5/5

This was a good follow up to what I thought was an excellent book 1. The action is as well written and engaging as ever. Where I thought this book faltered a bit is when it added a lot more characters and worldbuilding. We added a lot of elements but we didn't get to spend much time getting to know these new characters because there was always another place to get to and another battle. That kept the pages turning, but left the characters and my attachment to them lacking a bit. It was also a bit predictable as I guessed a lot of the major plot reveals during book 1. There is one very noticeable and interesting exception to that that I'm eager to see how it plays out though. Overall I enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next one.

A great continuation to the Echoes Saga.
The stakes are higher, the world building is expanded, and the characters continue on their journeys.
Overall, there just felt like something was missing for me in this book I just didn’t get the wow factor. Either way I am excited to continue the series

“Children of Fire and flame offer great promise, but only one perceived the time we will fall. As the Gods recast their fortune and power. One will suffer the burden of destiny for all.” A part of the prophecy

As per usual, when I love a first book, I continue reading the second book with some trepidation. But oh not a worry here! I love Asher. He’s not perfect which makes him even more real and relatable.
Gideon is the biggest surprise. His character really grows so much. He becomes a more mature mage. His arc takes an interesting turn and I enjoy reading his chapters very much.
We still see Faylen, Reyna, and Nathaniel with Asher and how they bond and work together makes them a great team.
We meet some old friends of Asher in this story. A new young warrior if the streets. Tauren, is introduced with his House of Owls. I enjoyed his role and hope to see more of him. We get to see more creatures like centaurs too.
We learn more history of the world and find out there is the First War which has been forgotten or ignored. This leads us to witnessing wonderful battles scenes.
We also find out more about the relationship between dragons and elves and humans. And how does this all impact the dark elf’s role with the old gods?
Such good worldbuilding continues in this book too. There is nothing that disappoints.
So much happens and we lose some endearing character by the end too.
So excited for the next book!

3.5

Okay so, this isn't quite as strong as book 1 which I gave 4 stars, so I feel good at 3.5 here. But that doesn't mean I don't love the series so far. The characters are all fantastic and I'm enjoying each of their stories. The secrets we learn in this book added to the lore of the world. However.....Phil....the dialogue plz. It's killing me hahaha but I know it gets better. Some of the dialogue sent me into orbit with how cliche it was. But these are still fabulous, and I'm excited for this series to find its footing because I've heard it only gets better!!!

Well, I can definitely say that the second book is even better than the first. We get to see the results of the impressive world building from the first book, and we also get to see the benefits of having so many POV's in the beginning. They were spread about geographically all over the place and it was hard placing who was who in the beginning, but things are just now beginning to start coming together.

Even though this is the second book in the series, it is also the second book in the first trilogy (confused?) This is a nine book series broken down into three trilogies. Why am I mentioning this? Because I wasn't sure if we were going to get a little of the "middle book" syndrome that occurs in some trilogies. To me, I didn't see that happening. If anything, things started moving faster. It almost felt like you were just almost to the top of the hill and just about to start falling down the other side.

When I finished this book, I didn't even wait 10 minutes before I was starting on book 3. Things are definitely moving forward and you can feel everything ratcheting up. The tension level is pretty constant and the pacing is done in a way that it feels like the more we learn, the more worried I am getting.

I am still a huge fan of the group traveling with Asher - Nathaniel, Reyna, Reyna's mentor and Elaith. The story with the dragons is getting interesting. I'm liking Gideon more and more and Galanor is growing on me. I'm having a really hard time with the plot surrounding the Elven Queen (it's difficult to read and I thoroughly and completely dislike the woman villain)....so...lots going on.

I'm also listening to the audio version and so far, I'm not having any issues with the narration. But, I've got more pages to read in the next book, so I've got to go :)

I enjoyed the first book and I LOVE the second. This is a really good series.

There are a lot of characters in this series, but they all work so well. The speed of the novel is perfect, the writing is awesome, the detail and imagination is fantastic. It's just a realllllly good book.

The only one smidge of a complaint I have is that some characters seemed a bit under developed this book. I loved Asher in the first novel, he just kind of was fine this book. That character-reader connection was missing.

I like the narrator, but he often has little inflection in his voice. Needs to add a little more drama. His girly voice definitely calls for some laughs. Just sayin.

My Quick Takes:
- 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Genre 📚 Epic Fantasy
- Language 🤐 infrequent moderate*
- Spice ❤️‍🔥 closed door
- Content 🤔 graphic violence/killing, themes of war, off page forced prostitution and torture

I have the first book a 3.5⭐️ and kept soldiering on for the plot. There were so many moving parts I knew it had to get better, and it did!

The second brings a faster pace for readers and more world building. I became more invested in the characters and the cliff hanger ending has me wanting to jump into the third. I think I’m still not fully jiving with the writing style but the characters are making up for it. I listened to the audiobook and think I would’ve enjoyed it more reading a physical copy. Excited to continue with the third book.

*The author went back and rewrote the first three books of this series and there are one or two instances of strong language in the audio book that are no longer present in the kindle version of the book.

color me convinced. This was truly a wonderful epic fantasy book and was a huge improvement for me from book I.

The relationships were funny, intimate, tender and strong.
The action scenes were abundant and well done.
The world felt familiar in small ways but there are some very unique plot choices that I've never read before and that was exciting.
The pacing was on point as usual.
The characters were really shinning more here, and I felt like we got more depth and history.

THOUGHTS:
A few of the action scenes could have been cleaner, but that's me being nitpicky.

OVERALL:
A wonderful second book in this series and I'm excited to keep going.

I rate this book a 4.5 stars.

Empire of Dirt raises the stakes in every possible way. Philip C. Quaintrell doesn’t just expand the world—he deepens it. The conflicts are more brutal, the characters more layered, and the consequences more devastating. This is the kind of sequel that takes everything great about book one and makes it even greater.

The pacing is intense as you’re immersed in elven politics and ancient magic. The multiple POVs continue to shine, offering perspectives—all of them compelling in their own right.

The Asher’s journey is especially gripping here—both in terms of combat and character growth. We see more of his past, and the emotional weight he carries adds real depth to every decision he makes.

This series just keeps getting better. If you’re a fan of epic fantasy with high stakes, morally complex heroes, and cinematic action, don’t stop at book one. Empire of Dirt proves this saga is something special.

Took this review from my Amazon review. If you haven't yet read the first book, check it out. Told a friend about it, who sent me a message the next day to say he hasn't slept yet - it was 7am.

Great continuation of the first book. The world gets expanded, we visit some new areas and we get a little more backstory on our favorite Ranger. This series is slowly becoming one of my all time favs, great cast of characters written well, epic story with several plot lines lining up nicely. I've said it before, its not often you get to see the villains perspective in a story, and when you do its rare where the author can still somehow surprise you even though you see the villain planning his schemes...yet somehow the author keeps me from guessing.

Solid action and a great followup to the first book.

I find myself enjoying this series quite a bit. Traditional fantasy with a strong story, vast and great world building and some spicing up of traditional fantasy tropes/themes.
It is a very accessible and interesting fantasy series and I am wondering if I will push myself to finish the series by the end of the year (considering I have some holiday available!).
