Never go home again. That's what Mom said - and stay away from that Fenn boy! How could Catherine Calhoun listen when that 'Fenn boy' has haunted her mind - and heart - for ten years? When Catherine finds herself in trouble, it's not the town of Blackrock or the family she left behind so long ago that calls her back. It's him. It's that Fenn boy. The boy whose kisses are her happiest memory. Yet, John Fenn has secrets - the kind that come with sharp claws and teeth. Even a bit of fur couldn't lessen the magic of his kisses, but there is darkness in Blackrock - the very thing that once tore her away from her true love. Will her return be enough to save John from becoming that darkness' next victim?
Michaela Carr is an American author and wiseass with a love for Shifter romance. She spent summers listening to the lobster boats coming in on the harbor in Downeast Maine and now tells tales of The Bears of Blackrock - a shifter clan who call the quiet rural community home. A pen name of Michaela Wright, Carr is the place to find steamy and dark stories about proud shifters and the lucky ladies that get to call them 'mate.' And soon, those shifters might have to contend with a whole new world of Sups.
Michaela lives in Chelmsford, Massachusetts with her daughter and a brood of animals, including cats named Archimedes, Poet, and Neptune. When she isn't writing, she's listening to New Wave, singing loudly while driving around aimlessly, Feng Shuiing her kitchen, and cooking up the best damn steak you'll ever taste.
You can also find Michaela's Contemporary and Gothic Romance titles under Michaela Wright. Both Wright and Carr titles can be found at her website.
When Catherine Calhoun heads back to her childhood home of Blackrock, she is really only looking for a place to feel safe again. And maybe even a restart to her life. She is barely back to Blackrock, when she runs I to her teenage heartthrob John Fenn. The Fenn family has a bit of a dark shadow hovering over their family as a few unexplained deaths had occurred to members of the family, on family lands. But no one could have guessed what was really going on, and how tightly these two families Iives have become entangled. A deadly game is afoot, and many lives depend on the survivor of the fittest. I enjoyed the mystery of this story and how the author was able to create such a stirring story. Well Done.🌺
The story was great, but the writing so bad that I will not be reading more by this author. It's a bear shifter story, with the typical mates story line. The woman doesn't take gruff from anyone, but appreciates being protected. There are physically abusive people within her family who serve as villains. Now the writing. It was so bad it was funny. Worst of all was that the errors weren't consistent. "God" was in lower case half but not all the time. "Goliath" wasn't capitalized, but "lasagne," "chicken," "officer," and "my uncle/aunt/grandmother/dad/mom" usually but not always were. Strangely, "my cousin" never got capitalized. It was "Phillips head" then Phillips Head" on the same page. "On the lam" was spelled "lamb," "aid" was spelled "aide," "lay" was spelled "lied," "beeline" was spelled "b-line." Plenty of extra commas that interrupted a phrase, and an apostrophe s for plural ("the Fenn's"). There were dozens of sentence fragments following questions and exclamations: "What a jackass? She thought." "But what if it's true? He'd say." Continuity problems: "Patrick didn't turn away from her..." Next sentence "Patrick...turned back to face her."Also "There was zero signal out near the rez, and even less signal out on Falkirk's Seat." How can the signal be less than zero?
This book starts with Catherine returning home after ten years. She needs a break and also some time away from her stepfather. Returning home, though, means that she might see John again, her childhood friend and first love. Returning home also means returning to memories that may be best left forgotten. People are disappearing and it all started years ago.
This is suspenseful and intriguing. I liked the story and found my heart racing during parts of it. The characters are mainly likeable, but they are all well-rounded and developed. Well-written and with great pacing, this book was a pleasure from start to finish. Definitely recommended.
* I received this book from Romance ARCade in return for a fair and honest review. *
Saving her bear by Michaela Wright. Catherine Calhoun never thought she’d set foot back in Blackrock, Maine. Yet, it seems family drama back home had other ideas, and she’s forced to flee to the quiet town she left so long ago. Yet the town of Blackrock isn’t the only thing she left behind. John Fenn, hotheaded and handsome son of the mysterious Fenn family, was the closest she’d ever come to true love. Despite decades passing since last she set foot in Blackrock, the mere notion of him sends her heart racing. Sure, the whole town speaks of the Fenns in whispers. They’ve known tragedy one time too many, drawing the suspicion of both county and Sheriff’s department. Yet, when Catherine lays eyes on her old flame, long dormant feelings boil to the surface, and there is no denying them. And it seems John is feeling the heat, too. Yet, as the wounds of Blackrock and the Fenn family reopen, Catherine finds she may well lose her beloved John to the same darkness that drove them apart all those years ago. Can she survive the dangers of Blackrock, or will Saving Her Bear be the last thing she ever does? This was a very good read. Some characters I liked some I didn't. I liked the part where Catherine saw the bear and John saved her. 4*.
HFN Series Bear Shifter Dual PoV, but not in 1st person form
Trigger warnings Murder Police harassment CNC
Characters John Fenn (mmc, bear) Deacon (younger brother to John) Catie (Catherine, mfc) Bodie Calhoun (dad to Bennie) Bennie (cousin to Catie) Patrick Fenn (grandpa and head of Fenn family)
Blackrock has some sketchy things going on. But Catie doesn't have much choice after shooting her stepfather for trying to kill her mother, so she goes back to somewhere she hasn't been in 15 years. Back to where John lives,... with his own secret. One she finds out when he saves her from a strange bear attack. Then Deacon comes up missing and it's not the first time someone in John's family has been missing. But the last two turned up dead and John doesn't want that for his baby brother. Catie then discovers John is missing. Who is behind the evil in the woods?
This story took some twists and turns. Didn’t notice any typos. As this is book 1 in the series, not sure if book 2 has interconnected characters or just the bear shifter line is the connection. HFN instead of HEA because there was no epolgue.
This was a first time read for me with this author. I was surprised at how fast I got into the story and was hooked. I would like to read more by this author. Overview. Catherine (Catie) and her cousins go camping on her way to stay with her grandpa. As they are sitting around the firer, some friends that they have not seen in 10 years. But when John and Deacon (the reservation twins) join them, Catie is love struck again. She has always loved John. John sits by her and the talk and also decided to take a walk. While on the walk, they see a bear. Catie is scared that night and asks John to sleep next to her. A few days later Catie goes to see John and Patrick the elder wants her off his land, but John decides to take her for a ride. They end up spending the night reconnecting and Catie sees a new side to John. Both still love each other but Catie has to except this new side of john and saves John and Deacon from a bad guy who was killing shifters for fun.
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.
In this book we meet Catherine Calhoun and John Fenn. There is a mystery that surrounds Blackrock and the Fenn family. Years ago both John and Catherine feel some of that mystery. Now Catherine is back and seeing John again has awakened feelings inside her she did understand as a child. John has never forgot the girl who accepted him like no other all those years ago. However now that they are adults he sees so much more. He wants her but he wants her safe too. Can these two find a HEA or will the mystery make sure that that never happens?
This is an amazing story. It has its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However i don't want to ruin it for any other readers. I will say this book will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
This was a new author to me so I thought I would give it a try.
There was many parts of this book I liked, the back story of the two leads, the mystery about what was going on. The suspense trying to figure out key players and things like that.
The part I had the most trouble with the lead characters. I couldn't tell what age they were. In one scene, John seemed grown up and very alpha and then the next scene he seemed like a man on a first date with his first girlfriend all awkward and unsure.
I'm also not too sure about the first sex scene. I didn't know if I should be turned on or scared for her. It was just part of the I'm not really getting the John character.
Can 10 years apart ever beat down the love of two high school sweethearts..... Even is his family has some deaths hanging over their heads... His family has a secret as well as the closet Native American tribe, she never did learn about it before being packed up by her mother and step father and shipped out of state. 10 years later reunited at a camp site near the lake where bodies have been found. Is Caitie's love for John gone one will in one night fill like no time has been gone. Forget his family's secrets her relatives have a big one.
This is an easy read. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves Werebear Shifter's and the humans who love them. This is also a Hatfield-McCoy type feud with family members dying on only one side. This is a story of racism at it's very worse, and what extremes have to be gone to to restore faith in humanity. A girl who has been in love with a boy for 15 years comes back home to find that boy, and she finds out he is also in love with her, too. I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS BOY,TOO! And I know you will be,too.
This is my 1st read and review for this author and I must say that I really enjoyed reading this story. Catherine goes back to her hometown of Blackrock and she runs into her old crush John. John is having unexplained deaths in his family but no one knows what’s going on. This is such a great read and I will be looking out for more from this author there’s action, murder, suspense, mystery, love and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages. I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
Saving Her Bear:A Second Chance Bear Shifter Romance(The Bears of Blackrock Book 1) By MICHAELA CARR
Absolutely enjoyable reading about how sometimes it's the past that gives you a wonderful future but on your way to getting it there's plenty of danger, drama and revelations that has to be revealed. I'm highly recommending everybody check this wonderfully written series out by MICHAELA CARR.👏👏👏👏👏👏🔟🔟🔟🔟🔟🔟💖💏💑💒💐
I received a free copy of this book however all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. Well, Michaela has done it again! This another book, that grabs you and keeps you til the last, I literally could not put it down, even though it meant no sleep last night! Not only is there the developing second chance love story between John and Catherine, there is kidnapping, murder, suspense and shape shifters - come on, what more do you need?! Oh, perhaps an HEA? Tick.
A second chance book with somewhat of a dark side to it. The two of them have always felt the connection. But because of an unknown killer, her family leaves. When she returns years later, they will have a second chance. But there is still a killer out there and he may be closer than she ever thought. The story has a dark mystery and the secret of what his family really is. Can love find a way?
Okay, so this was honestly so great for a free book. There were sex scenes I could have done without, but there was grwat character development and the story line always kept me guessing. 5 out of 5 stars.
Every character has been abused in some way, so this book is definitely darker than I like. And the sex scene is... weird, especially since this is a bear shifter story, not a wolf one. Bears don't hunt like that. But it was a quick read.
So the writing itself could have been better and was slightly hard to get used to at first.. but once I did, I have to say for a shorter book it packed a great story! Bear shifter is something different then the norm and I always love a spicy primal scene. So yay! 🥳
I love mysteries and love. Excellent storyline. I loved the characters the action the scenic scenes made you think you were right there. Excellent story.
Wow what book!!! I cannot tell you how much I adored this book!!! Deserves more than a 5* rating!!! This book is written in a way that it manages to snare you from the first sentence and that's it you're hooked into this world!!! It takes some imagination to be able to come up with this racy, sexy, dangerous story with aspects of pain and how t overcome that pain whether it be emotional or physical.
This story if filled with awe inspiring characters the whole book through, dealing with situations that nobody should have to deal with and still being able to come out the other side of it and heal and be happy. Catherine's character is a definite favourite for me and this is down to her inner strength and the fierceness she displays when people she cares about are harmed or threatened in any way. I love the way that her and John are! From the moment they re-meet their connection is like a visible thing tying them together not to mention how protective he is towards her and his huge heart that makes her feel safe after everything she has been through.
The storyline in this is so detailed but its not rushed or crammed full of useless information, every sentence makes sense to the story and there is a reason being there. It is filled with twists and turns, with action around every corner and it keeps you compelled to read more and more, I was gutted when this finished and I cant wait to read the second book to see what this world will hold next for us addicted readers. The detail in this book is amazing, down to the smallest detail and that makes it even more lifelike and so us readers can identify with the characters even more.
This is a must read for all, I cant stress this enough, seriously run out and get this book, you will not regret it. Simply Amazing

RECONNECTING WITH HER TEEN FLAME JOHN CATAPULTS CATHERINE INTO A WHOLE NEW WORLD!!
INCREDIBLE fast paced well written read by a truly gifted author. The characters come alive in this thrilling romantic story. Catherine's lion-hearted persona make her a most valiant heroine and John's unwavering devotion shines like a beacon. I relished this story, it was fabulous from beginning to end. If you treasure shifter romance, this is a terrific addition to your library. {I received a copy of this book for a completely honest review. In the world of shifter romance the possibilities are endless and always fascinating. Without reservations I highly recommend this book.
I was introduced to this series with an ARC for book three, The Unchosen Bride, which was so good I wanted more, so am back at the beginning. This series opener set the stage for books to come, introducing the Fenn Clan, the Calhoun family and the reservation nearby. Catherine Calhoun left Blackrock when her mother and stepfather moved away when she was fifteen. Now, a decade later, she has returned and is reunited with her grandfather, cousin Bennett, uncle Bodie, and her best friend, John Fenn. She finds herself drawn to John as more than a friend, however, and the feelings are reciprocated. But John's grandfather, Patrick, has ordered her to stay off Fenn land, which includes John's house. John is willing to give it all up for her, but he mysteriously disappears, along with his younger brother, Deacon. Catherine has a bad feeling that their disappearance is linked to murders from the past. And she will be racing against time to save the man she loves from the same fate. A KU library read.
NOTE; the version of the story I read was one I downloaded ages ago for free on iBooks and is no longer available for free download. There is another version that costs $3.99 that may be a more edited version of this story. My review is based SOLEY on the free version.
I liked it but there were parts that felt hollow or like they were only half told. If read like a hollow first draft but the ideas and concepts were really good. Needs some elaboration in some parts and others just need to be cut. But I liked the character overall even if they did come off a little 2-dimensional most of the time and said and did things that made no sense. Like Catherine’s fear of bears. I know as a wild animal their scary, but her fear seemed over the top and like she’s been traumatised by one previously, but nothing like that came up or was explained, making her fear unjustified and a little unrealistic. Not to mention they never explained the other bear AT ALL. He just showed up a couple times and then was forgotten completely when the male love interest went missing.
Wow! Awesome quick read. I read an amazing tale about love and second chances.
Our heroine is back in Blackrock town. Catherine Calhoun is finally coming back home to the family and boy (John Fenn) she left behind over ten years ago. She severely needs a change of scenery.
Catherine and John formed a connection years ago. John Fenn's family and other people have secrets. Will their secrets be more than she can bear?
While reading the book, I was eagerly hanging on trying to find out what would happen next. I was blown away by this well plotted out story. It is well paced, the setting was realistic, and it has descriptive details. I could imagine Catherine seeing John's bear for the first time or her having a confrontation with John's grandpa.
Read the book to find out what happens next in the story. Saving Her Bear by Alana Hart and Michaela Wright is awesome! It deserves 4.5 stars!
I received a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
this is part of the Romance Arcade given in exchange for an honest review , wow and holy moly ,. so what do you do when you come back to the one place you never thought you would . and what happens when you find out someone is not what they seem . and how do you deal with being hurt on a daily basis i am being vague cause some things Amazon wont allow though its not a cuss word but where you get hurt by someone you love on a daily basis whether it be a parent or a sibling or a child to a parent . this is not a story for the faint of heart though in a wait this does hit close to home to some degree ,. but if you read this you will know what i mean . also what do you do when you get shot or what if someone you shot to protect yourself or your loved ones. and can they be together even though he has more hair than her. giggles you will know why i said this too but i promise you will enjoy this if you can deal with certain things .
Review for SAVING HER BEAR I received this as a gift for an honest review Catherine is on her way to her grandfather’s home with her cousin Bennett. They stop for the night to camp in the forest and meet some of her friends from when she was young. One of them happens to be John, and right from the start you know there is a connection and a story there. John was her first love until her stepfather parted them 10 years ago when she 15. Now they have come full circle. When they do get to her Grandfather’s home , he is happy to see her, but not her uncle Bodie. There are strange things happening no one seems to want to talk about. Old mysteries are still the talk of the town, bears suddenly appearing in the woods and talk about a “hermit” who lives out there. But there is also danger, and John and Catherine are going to have to trust each other and rely on each other if they and their families are going to survive.
