Recall

Rate this book
RECALL, a fictional historical narrative, tells the story through the impressions of four young men who played on a championship high school football team in the Fifties and end up in different capacities in Vietnam a decade later.

The characters’ stories serve as a primer for a pivotal period in American life, the Sixties. Not only was a war going on, but a cultural revolution was underway. The hippie generation revolted against the war, which evolved into a form of anti-war anarchy that divided the nation’s political lines, birthing a bitter polarization.

As the characters return home from service, they are faced with social conflict and disrespect. Follow their interwoven stories as they try and assimilate back into a world that appears to have gone mad while also struggling with their personal demons.

Recall by R. Lawson, tells the story through the eyes of four guys who all played football together in high school and the characters return home and how society welcomes their return.

The story revolves around 4 characters Biff, Roe, Al and Cody, they are all high school team mates from Maryland. They find themselves head hunted by the military for top position jobs during the Vietnam war. R Lawson cleverly interwove their stories to tell the reader of the historical events but through each of their eyes from the start to the end of the war. The author explains the terror, confusion and violence of what war causes particularly, in this case, the Vietnam war and how the horrors those boys witnessed changed their lives once they returned.

It is very apparent that the author has put a great amount of time into researching this book and also by combining his own knowledge from living through that generation as well. I found it very interesting reading about it through the boys eyes and recommend to anyone that's looking for a new historical fiction. Great job R. Lawson!

War is something written in our history, for so many years there has been a war going on in any place, the scale of those wars is always changing but in some way or another, it affects us all.
This is a book starting with a friendship, a group of four friends who are inseparable, they went to the same school, they play for the same team and they went for the same war, to defend the same reason. I fall short in an attempt to describe how amazingly written this book is, how every storyline intertwined between every historical and factual event that happens during the war, it’s so engaging, you can feel the skills and experience of the author about wars at first hand.
Stories like this are the type of stories that makes me questions why something bad have to happen, but as everything is not as it appears to be, something good can come out of something bad, and vice versa, I guess that’s how life works.

Lawson went above and beyond on his descriptions and details of the Vietnam war. The fist bit of the book is mostly just background and it is a little slow but necessary for the rest of the book. After that the book takes off! It is very animated and kept my interest the entire time. Follow the characters through times of war and their return home which was unwelcome as they return to a different world than they had left. As a younger reader I only know what I was taught in school or have read in history books, so this story was incredibly enlightening. I have heard of the woes in US policies when it cane to this war as well as the poor treatment of soldiers upon their return - all of which are captured and explained in this story. If you want an action-packed historical novel with excellent characters you will love, this is for you.

Compelling read

Lol by R. Lawson is a historical narrative that follows 4 young men as they go from being on a champion high school football team to serving in various roles in the Vietnam war. Lawson writes about how the young men return from war and dealing with the social backlash from the war as well as PTSD, drug addiction and the emotions that come with serving in a violent war. Lawson brings to attention what Vietnam veterans had to come home to the turmoil they went through both at war and upon returning home.
The book contains a lot of history about the war and what the social scene was like as well as trying to cover the state of mind of the veterans upon their return from home. I like how it covered the brutal honesty about what the men had to go through mentally and physically. I’d like to read more from Lawson.

This novel by R. Lawson is a remarkable story that tells the heartbreaking tale of a few young men who played high school football together only to end up serving in Vietnam during the war a few years later. The book will tell you of their journey of this drastic transition and how their life is changed by it.
This novel is an incredible story that will really touch your heart. It will instantly transport you back to the 1960s thanks to Lawson’s great descriptions and historical accuracy in it. The novel will also show how war can affect one’s life forever.
At 490 pages, it’s a little long of a read, so you’ll need to invest some time into reading it. However, thanks to Lawson’s writing style those pages will instantly fly by. If you’re looking for a good historical fiction novel or a thrilling read, definitely try this book out.

A great view through the eyes of teen soldiers

This is an emotional story about 4 high school football players who end up in Vietnam after high school. The story is told through the eyes of these young men as the experience the atrocities and horrors of war first hand. The detail in the scenes is amazingly intricate. The story draws you in and keeps you turning the pages to see what is next for these young men. A return from war finds the people back home protesting the soldiers and what they did. This is a very well thought out and presented story of the Vietnam era. I would recommend everyone read this one so you can get a good view of the events from the characters in the book.

Though a fictional portrayal “Recall” was very well layered with true-to-life events and well defined characters. R. Lawson uses his characters to show the many sides of the very controversial Vietnam war that still raises emotions even today. A lot of research evidently went into this book along with the writer’s own war experiences delivered in a well-balanced style. Even if you have negative views about this particular war, the story telling is so well done that it invites you to feel all the craziness that those young men went through and come away with a sense of pride. Very well written.

A story about real life

This is one of those books that after you read it, you just need a moment. Recall is the story of of four boys who were enjoying their teenage years before being called to duty to fight in the Vietnam war. The shift in them as people as a result of their war time experience is as much astounding as it is heartbreaking. The author, having fought in the war himself, brings so much realism to the story. It really deserves to be read and appreciated in honor of those whose journey is actually what was depicted in this novel.

I found this book enjoyable . The story full of thought provoking . Intriguing ideas behind the war waged on Vietnam . The failures plainly stated in thought in a war that has long been a point of division on a generation on the ones who fought it!
