Laurie Berkner, “the queen of children’s music” ( People ), pairs the lyrics of her infectious hit song with Ben Clanton’s whimsical illustrations in this groovy and adorable picture book—a must-have for fans of Laurie, dancing, and all things monstrous!
I’m the biggest monster that you’ve ever seen! My eyes are purple and my teeth are green. I’m big and I’m scary, you know what I mean? And this is what I like to do…
Boogie away those bedtime fears and embrace your inner monster with Monster Boogie , based on Laurie Berkner’s irresistibly fun song and featuring lively, playful artwork by Ben Clanton!
"I'm the biggest monster / that you've ever seen! / My eyes are purple / and my teeth are green." So begins the rhyming narrative of Monster Boogie, which uses the words of Laurie Berkner's song of the same name as text, and pairs them with bright, attention-grabbing artwork by Ben Clanton. Eventually, by inviting the two children he is visiting to join him in the Monster Boogie, our green-toothed guest allays their fears...
I wasn't sure, going into Monster Boogie, how I would react, given that Berkner and Clanton's previous collaboration - We Are the Dinosaurs, another picture-book based on a Berkner song - left me mostly unimpressed. I'm glad I gave this one a try, despite my lukewarm reaction to the earlier title, as I found both narrative and artwork here appealing, and think the book would make an excellent reassurance story for children afraid of monsters lurking in the dark at bedtime. My only qualm, in this respect, is the potentially frightening two-page spread at the beginning of the book, which shows the monster ostensibly leaping across the room, claws extended. If young children can get past that one frightening scene, however, they'll be in for an entertaining treat. Recommended to Laurie Berkner fans, and to anyone looking for lighthearted monster fare.
This classic kid's song is brought to life through cartoony illustrations of a friendly looking, sharp-toothed monster. Big illustrations are perfect for reading aloud to a big group of dancing kids.

LFL find. I don't know the song. And normally I don't like books that counter fear of the dark/fear of monsters for kids who don't need them (don't want to inspire that fear in otherwise happy children). But this is so much fun! I love how the kids share a room, and that the slightly older sister is immediately down with the monster's agenda, but the brother hesitates until his toes start tapping and then he's fully enthusiastic, too.
Since I had never heard of Laurie Berkner this was new to me. Enjoyed the Ben Clanton illus. So glad I checked on this even though I have been avoiding reading anything copyright prior to 2019.
This is a fun mix—an addictive song paired with bright illustrations—which brings monstrous entertainment.
There's a monster in the bedroom, one with green teeth and purple eyes. He appears to be scary, at first. But this monster doesn't have roars and growls in mind. All he wants to do is boogie and wiggle.
Laurie Berkner's song comes to life in these pages, allowing an energy packed monster to come to life. The text is simple enough for even younger listeners to understand and, coming from the song, repeats itself. Although this does come across as repetitious at times (especially on the refrain), it does make the phrases catchy for kids and easy for them to 'read' along even when they can't read the words themselves. A possibly scary monster transforms into a source of giggles and will have young readers boogie-ing and wiggling themselves. Still, the message is clear—first impressions can be deceiving. Because this monster is anything but frightening.
The illustrations are bright and add just the right amount of silliness and excitement. While the phrases from the song repeat themselves, the action in the illustrations does not. It's the combination of these two which makes the book entertaining.
For those, who aren't familiar with the song or might want the chance to play it themselves, the music score is on the back of the book. But even without it, this is an easy to enjoy read which guarantees smiles for fans of silly monsters.
I received a complimentary copy and found it so fun to read that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
This is a book that kids will really get into. Who doesn't love to dance and wiggle and bust a move? It's the perfect bedtime choice as it invites kids to get up and party-hearty letting go of all their daily woes and working them into an exhausted I-need-my-bed-now sleep.
"The biggest monster that you've ever seen!" appears in a bedroom housing two siblings. One is happy and amazed at his company while the other is a little shy and intimated that he's there. The whole atmosphere changes when the purple-eyed, green-teethed monster turns on the boombox and invites the kids to "do the monster boogie with him around the room! He's not scary! He's funky!
When the kids finally realize there is nothing to fear they accept his invitation and the dance party begins. The dancing, wiggling and fun that transpires is euphoric to all.
What a lively and fun book for kids to experience. Kids can boogie away those bedtime fears and let their inner monster out for a good old-fashioned hoe-down. Award-winning and bestselling children's music star Laurie Berkner's irresistibly fun song, "Monster Boogie," is now a groovy and adorable picture book. Laurie pairs the lyrics of the infectious hit with Ben Clanton's monstrously playful illustrations. Music for the "Monster Boogie" song is included on the inside back cover. The book is definitely an invitation to kids (and adults) to get up and get your groove on.
Ben Clanton's illustrations have brought to life one of Laurie Berkner's most beloved children's songs. This is a fun one to read aloud, even more fun if you happen to have Laurie Berkner's CD and can play the song during story time. The music for the song is helpfully included on the back cover. I love the way Ben Clanton has integrated a story into the illustrations of a little boy overcoming a fear of monsters. He was already beloved in our house due to the wonderful NARWHAL AND JELLY series, but he once again proves his talents here. This book is sure to have your littles up and moving around.
We love this book for so many reasons. We love Laurie Berkner and knew this song by heart already, but there is something about touching the pages while singing that completely engaged my three year old twin and five year old. Also, it gets them moving. Literally. If you don't dance to this song while you read you must not be reading it right. And, since my kids know the words they often "read" this book by themselves which is a double win because I catch a break and they feel like their doing something completely independent. Great book.
A fun, entertaining read. With bright illustrations, repetition and rhyming, kids will love having this book read out loud to them, as much as they'll enjoy reading it on their own. Be warned, it's definitely a challenge to not sing the words as you read it out loud. You can find the song, and her video for it on Youtube. This book is great for music and story time.
By itself I'd say this is a solid 3 star book. Cute illustrations, a fun message...but it would be tedious to read. Paired with the tot pop song by the author, it's an easy 5 start. Singing this book? So much fun. So do yourself a favor. Before you try to read this book out loud, pull up youtube and watch the video by Laurie Berkner. It will change the experience for you!
The challenge with books such as this is that you need to either know the song or listen to the song as you read it. Clanton's illustrations are fantastic but hard to read without knowing the music. Song is available on YouTube.
Bright colorful illustrations make this the perfect introduction to another awesome Laurie Berkner song! I’m looking forward to using this in Music and Movement Storytime and our Halloween Storytime.
This is the cutest Laurie Berkner song turned into a book yet! Fun and colorful illustrations, a book that lets children get up and move and act silly!
School Library Journal: /* Starred Review */ PreS—This is an energetic adaptation of a song by Berkner. The story line is simple—a monster shows up in a child's room at night but instead of being scary, he wants to dance. The creature invites everyone to dance, including readers. The text is simple and repetitive. It includes color words that young readers will enjoy pointing to. Clanton's artwork is vividly colored and is so exuberant, the monster seems to come right off the page. Kids will identify with the feeling of being scared by monsters and hopefully transfer the confidence of being able to dance with them rather than being afraid. Adults would do well to search for videos of Berkner performing her song, which will help with appreciating its cadence and rhythm. This book would make an enjoyable storytime selection with extensions that could include singing the song and making crafts. VERDICT A fun read-aloud choice for libraries with preschool populations.—Debbie Tanner, S D Spady Montessori Elementary, FL --Debbie Tanner (Reviewed 07/01/2018) (School Library Journal, vol 64, issue 7, p44)
I was not familiar with this Laurie Berkner song before I found this book. I actually saw it at the library and checked it out without processing the fact it was a Laurie Berkner book. I read the book then listened to the song and overall, I enjoyed it.
This adorably illustrated book gives the song "Monster Boogie" more life, creating a cute, simple story to go along with the lyrics. The text in the book is word-for-word what the song is (unlike Pillowland which changes slightly), which is great for helping children learning to read to follow along with the song. Also a cute book for sing alongs.
Nothing can compare to We Are the Dinosaurs but this is still a pretty adorable book and a catchy song, sure to delight Laurie Berkner fans.
