This novella is set in the titular “Indomitus Crusade” time period during which the newly-resurrected Primarch Roboute Guilliman is attempting to take back massive segments of the galaxy from the forces of Chaos. Here we see the Ultramarines and Imperial Guard fight the Death Guard in a scene that’s being repeated across thousands of worlds.
While reading, I rolled my eyes at the cartoonish simplicity of the characters. The dialog is pretty rough...like listening to amateur community Shakespeare. But after thinking about it for a bit, I imagine this really is how the Primaris Marines should be cast. They’re vat-grown, brain-washed soldiers whose only aim in life is to impress their genetic father by exterminating demons, xenos, and heretics. And similarly the Death Guard in this book do stay in character as gross germ lovers making perverse offerings to their god.
The unexpected surprise of the book for me was how much I enjoyed the Cadian guardsmen segments. I’ve never set out to read a Guard-centric book, but every time they appear in a story I love them. I can recommend the exceptional book Fire Caste if this peaks your interest.
If you go into Crusade with the full understanding that it was written as a “Welcome to the Warhammer Universe” introduction and not expecting some great piece of literature, you’ll enjoy the book. It’s a perfect example of Black Library “Bolter Porn” (i.e. loose narrative wrapped around Space Marine-centric firefights). And I think it’s a fun companion book to read if you’ve purchased the “First Strike”, “Know No Fear”, or “Dark Imperium” box sets.
