First let me say that I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book, but it in no way influenced my feedback. I always leave an honest review.
I really liked the "concept" of a shifters world next to ours and none knows about it. I feel the description for the story was on it's mark & prepared us for the actual story. So, I say gr8 story and beginning to a series I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Caution: a few sarcastic spoilers of the first 1/4 of the book ahead. I have no clue how this book has 4.5 star average. I couldn't make myself continue reading past the 26% mark. The characters were over the top and empty at the same time. I couldn't care less if the stupid heroine died or not. And she was stupid with a capital S. I know strange alien creatures with tentacles just trashed our camp, killed my boyfriend (but he was going to leave me behind so he had it coming, no loss there), attacked me and my 2 friends, one of whom is missing, but honestly, no biggie...Now that they left I'm still going to hike in the woods for 5 miles by myself to get video of 2 birds doing it for my dissertation while I leave the only other survivor of our bizarre attack at the camp with the dead body of my boyfriend. Shucks, I'll miss the great sex, but what's a girl to do, right? THEN before Genius McIdiot can leave the weird tentacled alien things attack again. She manages to escape and eventually fall into a 50 foot deep hole...without getting a scratch on her. She's saved by a guy wearing breeches and 'The Puffy Shirt' from Seinfeld. He jumps in and out of the hole to show her how cool he is and gets her out. He brings her to the Northern Kingdom and explains how secretive it is and how most animals are shifters and how detrimental it would be if humans knew about his kingdom and the creatures in it, but you know, he's known Genius McIdiot a whole few hours and figures why not spill all his secrets, though she probably shouldn't tell anyone once she gets back home. I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. There wasn't one shred of decent characterization or world building or dialog or emotion (especially no emotion) to make me want to muscle through and try to finish this book. Note to the author: when you kill off the boyfriend (no matter how terrible the relationship is) of the main character by crushing him in his truck by tentacled aliens please try to 'show' more emotion than the equivalent of 'dang, I chipped a nail'.
Ok where do I begin. This book was definitely not what I expected I mean it was enchanting and full of mystery and intrigue and had a dash of mythical feel to it. Which I enjoyed. On the other hand Mia's character for a heroine had a lot to be desired. Also can we talk about Rome!!! The whole back-and -forth things he had going on with not being over his dead wife Beth, and then he was instantly in love with Mia in a matter of days was confusing didn't sit right with me. In the book it even said that Rome was projecting his feelings for his wife Beth on Mia. I was like really Mia!!! I know your boyfriend was a jerk but you could've at least pretend to grieve his lost a little bit before getting involved with Rome. I'm just saying!!! Plus what happened to Jean?? Maybe they'll mention her in the next book!!! I was expecting that maybe they would at least bring her up again but nope nothing. It just didn't seem believable. Cameron OMG!!! He just happen to surrender himself to Calypso after being in love with Mia for like forever. He magically found his HEA?? Really?? Mia once again just instantly accepted that her bestfriend is lost forever. Come on!!! Shouldn't there be more emotions and her being really upset about this?? I know that I'm rambling on-and-on but Mia had her life set in the real world. She had her mind made up to get her Master's degree. I know that the whole Warblers idea was a busted thesis option why didn't she decided to studies something else and become a scholar. She just put her life on whole giving everything up for a guy she barely knew. I know they say love is blind, yes the Northern Kingdom is beautiful and magical kingdom with shifter. Really!!! Overall enjoyable read and this series has potential to be really great. I just need things to be a little bit more realistic within the fantasy. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no minority compensation was received the opinions I have expressed are my own.
Straight on to book 2 I received this book by the author for an honest opinion. After reading and reviewing the hinterland series which I absolutely loved, I jumped at the chance to read the northern kingdom series of books when the author gave us the opportunity to read and review these. I enjoyed this book, it introduces us into another magical world of escapades and intrigue. This is the story of Mia who is a scientist studying a species of bird when a tentacle monster ( slabbers) comes stampeding into their campsite. Obviously horrified and bewildered each of them scatter and flee. Falling into a pit she's stuck until in comes Rome who miraculously can just jump in and jump out as he's a tiger shifter who's Prince of the little kingdom human Mia has just fell into. This is there tremulous story. I enjoyed this author's imagination, her monster ideas and that Mia has just been thrust into a whole new world that is so far from normal with all kinds of magical beings some good and others just wanting to eat you. There is more sex dialogue in this book then there was for the hinterland series and some of the passages were a bit like a bad porno and over acted so to speak but I did enjoy the detailing of the characters and world building. A good read.
Let's start with the good, the plot and storyline were well thought out. However the dialogue came off as stilted when it came to the hero, making him seem like he was 3 years old or an imbecile. The other characters did not have that type of dialogue. Mia's character for a heroine had a lot to be desired. I would have preferred this book to be about Jean or Cameron, maybe they would have been a better choice, because they seemed more decent. Who knows, because the author did not do a very good job of developing these characters. It's three-quarters into the book, before Mia gets a spine and some morality. This heroine is weak, weak, weak. As for the hero, what can you say about an imbecile? The worse part is that these two are eventually going to be King and Queen of the Renx. I feel real sorry for the Renx. Let's face it, this book is not about love, or romance, so I am going to classify it erotica.
This is the first book I have read by K.T. Harding, but it isn't going to be the last. There are a lot of paranormal shifter stories out there right now. Don't get me wrong, I love this genre, but sometimes they all seem to have a lot of the same elements. This story took me by surprise. It was very different from what I was expecting. There is a lot of action and adventure, and while there are love scenes they almost seemed secondary. Sometimes I would forget it was a romance because it read a lot more like an urban fantasy. That is another favorite genre of mine, so I wasn't going to complain about that either. I really enjoyed the characters, the story line, and the detail put into this book. Yes, I could tell that K.T. is new to the author world, but with such a wonderful beginning I know she is going to be a success. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!
This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Northern Kingdom Book 1: Lost and Found is the first of five Northern Kingdom books by K.T. Harding. I decided to read this series after reading and becoming addicted to her Hinterland series (which I highly recommend). This was definitely not what I was expecting. Let me begin by stating this is for Mature Readers Only. This book opens steamy and continues steamy through the book. The characters are interesting and a little quirky, but really easy to like. There is plenty of action and adventure, a diverse and amazing world that exists as a parallel to the human world. K.T. Harding weaves magical and addicting stories that pull you into the middle of the action and make you feel like a first hand witness.
An enchanting tale full of mystery and intrigue and a dash of mythical. With a building plot line and a lot of suspense this story will hook you attention and imagination and the unique and captivating characters keep the reader well anchored to the story. The love story is wholly and artfully woven amix a tale of shifters and magic with both a heartwarming quality to it but also steamy and sexy scenes that will not be able to disappoint any PNR reader. I received a free copy and voluntarily reviewed.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
K.T. Harding is a new author to me and this book is not going to be the last one I want to read from her. It was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this first part of the series, once i started i could not put the book down. Well written plot, funny moments, endearing characters, makes this an irresistible story you won't want to put down. Well worth the time. Fans of well-written shifter romance will love this series. Can’t wait to see what comes next.
So much excitement, action, battles, deception, guilt, fear, despair, happen and love. The whole gambit of emotions is found in this first of a series story. It is not a cliffhanger, but it does give openings for much more. I am on to book two!
This is a nicely done PNR with a definitely healthy erotic romantic element to it. If that one line summary is appealing to you and you find the kindle blurb at all appealing then you’re pretty much bound to enjoy this one. If you’re in the mood for that it’s definitely recommended.
Several shifter groups fight off another sect for dominance in the sheltered land, with the help of displaced human. Of course romance develops , babies are born and life continues the cycle. Interesting character's developing throughout the story.
I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy, and here is my review. I enjoyed the story, and the author's ability to weave it. There is a part in it I wish was different, but, not worth knocking off stars for. The ending was beautifully romantically eloquently written. This author definitely knows how to turn a phrase. Look forward to more stories from this author.
