Bestselling poet r.h. Sin, author of the Whiskey, Words, & a Shovel series, presents a poetry collection that illuminates the transformative power of emotional pain.
Algedonic is an aesthetic outlook on pain and pleasure. Complex emotions simplified into poetic interludes as only r.h. Sin can express. With his trademark of giving simplicity to some of the hardest of emotions, Sin reminds us all that there are often two sides to an emotional story and sometimes the pain transforms into something beautiful, something less problematic and maybe something that reignites a feeling of pleasure.
Well, the bad: most poems basically consisted of just several words scattered on a page...
Most of them don't really use capital letters where appropriate, for some reason.
The good: some of these word combinations were very evocative and resonated with me...
After a lot of careful consideration, I decided that I'll go with rating it 4, for the resonance.
While some poems are really dreadful: Q: i hope you find someone who helps you unpack your heart with clean hands (c)
... some are nice: Q: sometimes you’re better off alone there is peace in being away from it all (c) Q: i am alone but this is heaven this is peace (c) Q: all of me was never meant to be touched by you (c) Q: some of the peace we search for will always dwell within our own heart start there... search there... (c)
I truly love R.H. Sin's work. I think its beautiful and important- it always feels so personal as well. I was a bit disappointed in this collection though, in comparison to his other works that is.
This one deals more with heartbreak and relationships not working out.
The last poem and the leading poems to the end, did not have this wow effect that they usually do. I still enjoyed this collection and had some favourites but it wasn't my favourite is all..
I received this as an ARC on NetGalley in exchange for a review.
I don't know why I keep doing this to myself...
Every time a new r.h. Sin book drops, I always read it, expecting it to be better. I mean, you'd think an author would grow with each new work, right? But it's really just the same thing recycled into a new cover. The themes are the same, the she-poem one-liners are the same, the insta-poetry snapshots are the same. I always feel cheated at the brevity, lack of poetic devices, lack of depth, and repetitiveness.
I think my favorite thing about this is the fact that he includes some clapbacks at his critics. I feel like this is really telling of an author. When a person feels the need to respond to negative critique - especially within their published work - it makes me wonder how much negative critique there must be in order to prompt such a retaliation in writing.
Still, the fact that he continues to release these, and they continue to sell, tells that there is a market for which he is great at reaching. So, there's that....
I have so much to say about this, so bear with me. I don't know how this person keeps churning out these "poetry" books one after the other, like some kind of bad poetry factory. It just doesn't work that way! Or at least, it shouldn't. There is a reason why writing good poetry takes time, it can take someone years to gather enough material for a collection of poems ready to be published. It's only natural. Poems need to grow inside of us and ripen, only then can we pick them up and put them on paper. Not every single sentence someone thinks of in the spur of the moment should be considered as poetry. We already have Twitter for those. Now, I get the appeal of writing these short one-sentenced poems, I've tried it and it is kind of liberating, having this one idea and writing it down in its rawest form, and then moving on to the next just as quickly, without the obligation to form an entire lenghty poem around that singular idea. But then, these poems have to have a real punch to them, they have to hit you in exactly the right place. And when there's too many of them, they are going to lose that punch, no matter the quality. When it's overdone, it is just going to end up being bland and cheesy and repetitive to the point of agonizing boredom. And this is exactly how I felt while reading this - agonizingly bored! It baffles me how much these books are selling and, as someone who considers herself to dabble in poetry ocasionally, I am truly offended. Again, I understand why this is popular among people who don't usually read poetry much, it is short and you can fly through it in 10 minutes, but to me, that doesn't speak much about the quality. Do you choose your novels based on how short they are too? I didn't think so. I'd rather spend a solid two or three hours completely immersed in a good poetry book than fly through all of EIGHT R. H. Sin's books. (I only read this because I wanted to write a hate-review, but I didn't want to be a hater without having read the thing first, YES I AM PETTY LIKE THAT! Also, I love to torture myself apparently.) So, here I present to you some of the worst poems in this book, just so you don't have to trudge through it yourself. (See, I'm a nice person after all!)
you’re an addict and i was just another drug to you
i ache from the weight of all the sadness in my heart
i don’t mind fucking one person for the rest of my life
she was everything i needed and i was ready to do whatever i could to prove to her that i deserved the love that she’d wasted on others
i hope you get lost and find yourself again
she found heaven in a bookstore she got lost in the pages
the light lives with you you bring the light wherever you go
be wild be loyal be loyal be wild
you are the most interesting thing occurring here on earth don’t let them make you feel as if you are ordinary you are not
fuck the word count pay more attention to the message anything is poetry everything is poetry
I wish he took his own advice, and no, not EVERYTHING is poetry.
she was beautiful and strange and broken but she was worth it
tell these girls they don’t need men to feel like women
DON'T YOU FUCKING TELL ME WHAT TO DO! (So patronizing, I don't need that in my poetry, I can get it from my parents for free)

i've been following the author's instagram for a little while now, and his poetry never fails to empower me. the same goes for this wonderful collection of poems about the highs and lows of falling in love. you don't need to be fixed by anyone you just want to be loved in a way that chases the sadness out of your soul.
Who were you before the aches Of a broken heart Who were you Before the world decided To tear you apart...
This was one of those books I picked up because of the cover. It is a gem that is so short but full of raw emotion. I felt everything to the core of my soul. The first half is titled, "Pain/Chaos" and the second is "Pleasure/Peace" which gives an indication of the main theme of each section. The first half is very dark but the last half is hopeful and uplifting.
You are the flower That blooms by itself For itself For yourself... Keep growing...
I don't know where or how R.H. Sin gained the wisdom but the poems are heartfelt and I found them to be eerily relevant and they really struck a nerve. This is definitely one poetry collection I will be reading again (and adding to my collection).
I wish to only to find A heart as lonely as my own That wishes to find Someone like me
I wish I could give this zero stars. Vapid, repetitive, boring ‘poetry.’ The author needs a basic lesson in figurative language. And in avoiding manic pixie dream girl tropes.
*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
This was my first experience with r.h. Sin’s poetry, though I have heard many people raving about his work for quite some time now. And I must say, I was not disappointed in the least. This particular collection follows what has become a very popular style lately—short poems or phrases that pack a big emotional punch. While it can be quite a risky way to format poetry, as it ends up being extremely hit or miss depending on the audience, it can also be a very powerful and thought-provoking reading experience.
Even though I am a huge fan of longer poems that I can analyze to death, I have actually found myself really captivated by this style lately, and this collection is no exception. I found Sin’s writing to be incredibly beautiful. This is a short but sweet collection that is perfect for anyone, whether they are new to poetry or already well-versed. The themes presented in every bit of text are relatable—utterly human—and exceedingly poignant.
Sin’s ability to pare down complex and, at times, confusing feelings, both positive and negative, really shines through. He shows that it is possible to capture the vastness of human emotion in the smallest of spaces. His words make you think about how we are not as alone as we may feel—that we are all intrinsically linked by common experiences of pain and pleasure. He reminds us to step back and focus on the beauty of life and the light in the darkest times. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and look forward to exploring more of his work in the future.
"you don't need to be fixed by anyone you just want to be loved in a way that chases the sadness out of your soul."
Rating: 5/5 stars, even though it's poetry and it's hard to rate.
YEET I FINALLY AGREE WITH SOMEONE'S SELF-LOVE PHILOSOPHY!
THIS BOOK YOU GUYS! WHAT A BLAST! If you're not a usual fan of poetry and simply find yourself flowing through the pages, then once the book is over breathing out an annoyed 'that's it?!' then READ THIS ONE. I don't know if I fully consider it poetry (not that I am an authority figure in poetry) but it felt more like 20 words essay that teach you more about yourself than any other 'discover of self' kind of book.
The writing was good, it was all verse and even though some poems seemed to flow better than others, it still felt poetry-ish and the sentences weren't just cut to be artsy and Tumblr. The order of the poems and the two parts made sense, and the overall idea was coherent.
Algedonic was brilliant and unexpected, it wasn't so much about crying about a has-been-lover, but more about a why-we-want-that-lover type of thing. Which I didn't know I wanted to read but apparently had. It didn't really blame other people for the MC's miserable state but gave them the power to fix everything, internally, giving them back their responsibility. I think that's a problem with poetry, poets always blame others for their misery and then bitch about it publically, which is totally awkward and uncalled for, but that's another debate for another day.
Anyway, yeah, I highly recommend this if you're not into the sappy over emotional 'she was the sun he was the moon and every day he died to let her shine' kind of crap, but still, want to try out poetry.
he destroyed her wings then punished her wings for not knowing how to fly
When I started reading Algedonic for the first time, I had only read I Hope This Reaches Her In Time and Rest in the Mourning. I was very well accustomed to Sin's writing style but I still wanted to read this one. I wasn't particularly exited about it but I figured I should give it a try. And I did. This book was good.
Divided into two parts, particularly Pain and Pleasure, Algedonic is a collection of poetry about two main things a person received when he/she is in love—pain and the pleasure. The emotions and feelings in each poem were imminent and I could actually feel what the author wanted to talk about. Most of this stuff was relatable and it was a miracle I didn't fall in love with Sin after reading this.
The entire book is in the popular free verse style of using short phrases and poems that give out a rather emotional message. Because of this emotional message, this book is quite popular. In this book, Sin showed that a person can have the potential to give pain and receive pain in return, and that despite this pain, a person can still have a rather pleasurable life for no matter what, every person is a good person. It also talked of abuse against women and how most of it is hard for anyone to bear. It was a great read, but I guess the ideas were a little too old for my sake.
"she found heaven in a bookstore she got lost in the pages"
I received this eArc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I saw R H Sin listed as a book to review my heart basically melted. I recently stumbled upon him and fell in love with the simplicity of his words. These aren't literary works of art, but poems aren't always meant to be. Everyone reads for different reasons. I read poetry to find solace in the fact that I am not alone with how I am feeling. This collection does just that.
This is split into two different sections. Pain|Chaos and Pleasure|Peace
Pain|Chaos kicked my heart to the curb, and Pleasure|Peace put a band-aid on it. These are raw, simple, and straight to the point.
You'll love them or you'll hate them. That's all a matter of who you are, and what you're feeling when you read them. People tend to love what they can relate to, and I loved these. I book marked at least 20 of them because they hit so close to home.
My first R. H. Sin book and I can genuinely say most of it resonated with me. I always find appeal in these types of "modern poetry". It is actually more prose than poetry tbh. It's like having a conversation with a person WHO JUST GETS IT. Alot of the pieces, surprisingly, I could apply to my own life and it's just interesting how introspective we can become by reading one liners (LOL). But seriously! This book is divided into Pain which is written across black pages in the book and then Pleasure which is spread across white pages and that immediate contrast of situational life is immediately represented. I will definately be checking out more of Sin's work. I was engrossed and found myself shaking my head in agreement with alot of the things he wrote about (which is always a good thing!)
poems. im mostly a selfish poet and i don’t like poetry of others mostly when they consist of poems which are like 5 words (some were longer tho!) i disliked the black part of the book, which is about pain and chaos (but really its just about toxic romantic love etc)- yep i very disliked it but is it because ive never been in love or am i just too aromantic to understand? who knows… BUT the white part about peace and happiness was pretty good, pretty motivational, sweet, it reminded me of my girl friends because i love them and i love women, thank you very much.
soo it was okay i think. i feel bad giving 2 stars so i gave 3 but its really 2,5 hehe
Wow this is the ultimate damn collection of beautiful heart throbbing lines. This beautiful collection touch on themes regarding heartbreak, wrong beliefs which young girls are made to believe, finding love, acceptance, feminism and enjoying one's own company. Really loved reading this one. Every line and every poem is so quotable👍
These poems should stay on Instagram, they don't make sense in a book to be consumed at one time. There were like 2 good poems the rest were repetitive and quite honestly pretentious, but not even clever enough to be truly pretentious.
The poems are good. I enjoyed them for the 27 minutes it took me to get through this entire book. The price point is high for the content but I did love a few and want to support poetry in prose. If you need a book you can relate to as a girl/woman and possibly enjoy on a beach- this one.
