"Cupcakes is a fan-fiction series, suited in the universe of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which became notorious within the fanbase for its highly creepy and gore-filled narrative. It has been described by Equestria Daily as the most creepy, crude, gory and traumatizing narrative involving ponies ever written.
[...]The story is centered around the two pony characters Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash, who decide to meet at Pinkie’s house to bake some cupcakes (in reference to Pinkie’s “cupcake” song in an episode). Upon arriving at Pinkie’s, however, she realizes she will be part of the recipe."
First off I had no idea that random Creepypastas and stories were on this site to be reviewed. Second off my rating and my review both have to do with the impact of this story more than the story itself. Cupcakes is in itself very crude and very odd and also focuses on season 1 Pinkie Pie.
Season 1 and 2 we knew very little about Pinkie Pie we know she grew up on an Amish farm and had a bunch of siblings and everybody looked like they had grown up in poverty and no no happiness. There is not a lot about Pinkie Pie beyond she was weird and very scary and some ways in the first season, she knew too much and she was basically aware that she was in a show. Which likened her to the Joker. The Joker is fully aware he is in a comic series and a TV series, and he does weird quirky things just to keep the series going which means that is he the bad guy or is he the good guy? What's a few lives when he's keeping all of Gotham alive and relevant? That's what Pinkie Pie gave off in the first and second season.
The impact of this single story is monumental. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad. It's not atrocious like Sonic.exe, but like the aforementioned creepypasta this story has lived on for over a decade. All you need to say is Cupcakes and somebody knows exactly what you're talking about or they reference this story. That is extremely powerful. There's very few things that you can say one word or a short sentence from and everybody will know exactly what you're talking about. Even books like Harry Potter there's only a few things that everybody even people who haven't read it would know, the same applies to multiple books series I can think of. A Series of Unfortunate Events, Green eggs and Ham, Jurassic Park, LoTR, these books and shows that everybody has seen and everybody can quote live forever through references.
And so far cupcakes has remained relevant for 10 years and continues to be a well-sighted and well-referenced and multiple Creepypasta and historical internet horror stories videos.
Is Cupcakes good? In no way do I think it is a great amazing story. I think it is mediocre in the gore area, I've read far worse Gore in basic books, and seen worse in 70s horror movies. If I was reading this on writing alone it would be a three, middle of the road exist and you can read it but it's not important or vital.
But I'm also reading it on the impact. And the impact is a solid four. This fanfic will probably be referenced for the next 10 years, that makes it basically as referenced in this fandom and among some people on the internet as "you shall not pass" or "ten points to Gryffindor", in fact I've seen more mentions of cupcakes randomly in podcast then I have certain fandoms that I know people love and have been in since the dawn of it appearing. So I have to say cupcakes is not a good story but it left its mark and that mark will never be erased.
I had read this when I was still a very active fan of MLP(about 14 or 15 years old?) and "Cupcakes" was the first horror story I had ever read. The reason why I really liked the story back then is because it reminded me the story of Sweeney Todd, which I was a big fan of especially the movie at that time.As much as I am thankful for this helping me getting into horror stories,"Cupcakes" is not that good of a horror story in my opinion after reminiscing about it.Even though it is terribly horrifying to see your friend trying to butcher you and turn you into a cupcake(and learning they have done this to others),this is the only horror element that exists in this story. Its whole plot is basically the process of Rainbow Dash getting tortured by Pinkie Pie(Pinkamena) and finally turning into a cupcake. That's why for me "Cupcakes" is more of a splatter, gorey torture porn than horror.I have to agree though with the other reviewer that the characters act (sort of) in character.
As much as I think it would be more appropriate to rate this 3 out of 5 stars,"Cupcakes" in all its edgy glory still has a soft spot in my heart.
