Gwenna White's new neighbor is...distracting. He's a beautiful, tattooed, motorcycle-driving enigma. One she can't allow herself to think about. Since the accident that ruined her face and stole her career, Gwen, a former model, lives under the radar, seldom leaving the bear sanctuary she runs in the Tennessee mountains. She's not reclusive, but that doesn't mean she's looking for a lover. Definitely not someone who looks like that. * Barrett Drake could use a friend: a tall order, since most of his are dead. His damaged hand may be the reason he's out of special ops, but it's not his only wound. Not by a long shot. All that's left between Bear and a new life is one last job. If he can hold on, get it done... He won't be here that long. Just long enough to ruin Gwen's life and make a speedy exit. That's the plan. But things don't always go as planned. You can't choose who you love. You can't fix fate. And that's the problem...

Murder is a standalone romance with a hint of mystery. It's the second in the Sinful Secrets Series, in which each book is inspired by a sin and centered on a huge secret.

Ok - finally done with the book. No idea why, but it took me 3 days to finish it. It's pretty long, but still. I should've finished it faster. But it just dragged along...
I loved it. Most of it anyway. I loved Barrett and Gwen. But I hated the longness of the book. I think a good editor could've edited out all those mistakes and at least 100 pages of redundant and repetitive stuff. And also - for me personally - all this god and church and bible reading shit!
The book was really intersting - you want to keep reading, even though you kind of know what's what from the beginning, but still, you want to see how it ends.
But it's just so much stuff in there - too much stuff we don't need or want to know. The sex was very weird and happened too often, or rather in the exact same way too often. The whole bears thing. It was totally unnecessary for the story. Gwen could've been working anywhere else and the reader wouldn't have even noticed. The bears don't fit the story at all. Why does she care so much about bears in the first place? How did she end up there? How do you get started something like a bear sanctuary when you want to be a country music star?? So much weird and unnecessary stuff in this book and still I don't understand some things.
I still loved the hero and heroine and I'm glad I read it. But it should've been edited A LOT more thoroughly.
Don't let me stop you from enjoying the story! ☺☺☺

It's been a few days since I finished MURDER, but I needed the time to really absorb everything and settle my thoughts.

This book is incredibly long, brilliantly written, and insanely twisted - in the sense where you don't really know who's good, who's bad, who's lying, who has ulterior motives or not.

The story revolves around two main characters - Gwenna and Barrett. Gwenna is a beautiful ex-model, ex-singer who was in a super tragic accident, leaving her body and mind scarred. She's hiding herself out in the mountains, running a bear refuge and leading a simple life. That is...until she get a new neighbor.

And Barrett? Siiiigh. Barrett is everything you want in a main character. He's ex super-secret-bad-ass military guy (or is he?) and he's... broken. So incredibly broken, deep down in his soul, that he's shattered into a million pieces that just won't ever fit back together again. His PTSD is written so perfectly, you can feel his pain. The suffering he feels is tangible, and it hurt. I felt his pain every time he had flashbacks, every time he woke up from nightmares and ran to the bathroom to vomit and shake uncontrollably- and it was suffocating. And coming from a girl who grew up with a Dad who saw too many things in the service and never came back quite the same- it was so believable. Ella James wrote this character freaking brilliantly.

So...what happens when two people who are running from their past's come crashing into each other? And... can two people who aren't even whole on the inside fall in love with another person when they don't love themselves?

Then throw in the typical Ella James twists, and you're hooked. You can feel danger brewing the entire story. You know there's a threat, you just don't know who's it coming from or what direction it'll hit you at. And when it does hit you?? Good Lord, be ready.

Well it took me some time to get through this book but it was well worth it in the end. I have to admit it was very slow a good way through but if you persevere it's worth your patience and I must say a very clever suspense romance read.

~*~ 4.5 STARS ~*~

WOW! This was a MONSTER of a book! MURDER was over 500 pages of sexy, intense, mysterious, and mind bending good times. I'll tell you the truth and say that I was scared to start this. I'm used to reading a book a day, and I know that this one was going to put me up for a while. But Ella James has never steered me wrong, so I said "Fuck it, let's do this!" and started this dark and intense journey of Gwenna and Barrett.

Now if you aren't familiar with Ella's Sinful Secret Series, here is how it works. MURDER is only the second book in the series, following SLOTH (which was a TOP PICK for me). Each book is inspired by a sin and revolves around a HUGE secret. If you've read SLOTH, you know what I'm talking about. So, knowing all of this, I knew I was in for quite a ride, and a big mind fuck! I was determined to nail down the secret right away. I found myself re-reading scenes and making notes, trying to figure out things before they happen. It made this book a true journey for me. If you are looking for a fast paced, perfect love story, don't even think about starting this book. This is a book you will have to savor...a book you have to take your time with...a book that will screw with your mind, and completely obliterate your heart.

I found myself getting so immersed in this story, that everything else disappeared. Pieces of the puzzle started appearing...things were starting to connect and just when you think you have it all figured out...one twist screws it all up, and so the mystery continues.

Ella takes us through a timeline of about 5 years or so, giving us both Gwen's and Barrett's POVs. It's A LOT of information, but it is laid out in a way that it's easy to follow along. Things happen in the past and present that will break your heart. Tragedy, loss, secrets...all of it swirls around your mind like a never-ending rollercoaster ride. It's one HELL of a ride! It's interesting. It's sometimes dark, but no less beautiful. MURDER is a long journey to absolution...and Ms. James gives us an ending that you won't see coming. This romantic mystery was enticing, not only to the eyes, but to the heart and the mind. Ella James has a way of driving me crazy with her fairy tales and dark mysteries, but in the end, she takes the genre and makes it her own, and THAT makes her stories even more unique and utterly addicting!

Really, this is 3.5 stars for me:
The twist and turn of Barrett and Gwen are good, and well plotted out.

The hard part, and while looking on GR I can see others stopped reading, is the book is extremely long and while normally - that isn't a problem, it makes you feel that a GOOD 40% could have been cut out.

There are so many many details about so many many things that I can't even decide if they were just because the author felt like it or because they really had something to do with the story.

Example, there many many bath tub scenes. They take a lot of baths together. In one, there is about an entire kindle page describing how they are sitting in the tub together ... His foot, her leg. I felt bad but I got bored, and began to skim.

The sex scenes are hot, but so many were back to back. Chapter ends, the next one begins with the morning after and more very detailed sex. I get it, they liked to get it on but - again, I was bored and skimmed.

What I didn't do was give up. I had to find out the secret. I had to find out what was going on. I must admit that I didn't guess it until almost it was time, and then - well, there is another twist and we realize we are wrong.

At 95% so much is told at almost a rapid pace that when it does ALL get revealed and we get to the epilogue ... I was a bit disappointed. It wasn't really much of one after SO MUCH details in the book!

I was also sad that more wasn't discussed about her friendship with Jamie. What happened was huge ...

I did enjoy the author mentioning other books (Finding Eden) and her love of Lularoe leggings.

one word: Anticlimactic.

I have waited for this book through all the release date pushing, one month, two months.. 3, 4 .. all the while expecting that the book will blow my mind once I had my hands on it. It blew my mind alright.. out of boredom.

The entire 70% of the beginning was filler.. they ate, they slept they had nightmares they f***ed. The next day? guess what they did.. they ate, slept, had nightmares and f***ed some more. I was so emotionally detached that even the smutty scenes were torture to read.

I am disappointed and honestly mad that I had wasted almost 10 days to finish a book so boring when I could've spent that time reading 2 or 3 amazing ones. I am never getting those wasted hours back but I am going to write what I thought about it here.

Do not recommend. Read at your own peril!

I loved Sloth when I first read it, and when I started reading Murder I thought I would like it.

It started off great. But then it lagged A LOT.

I am usually one for big books but I felt that it just felt unnecessary or something. It felt like it was taking forever.

And since I felt that way, I didn't even care about Barrett and his secret anymore. I basically skimmed after the 65% mark which I dislike doing but hey.

4.75⭐️ This was amazing, im crying. I literally loved reading everything about Gwenna and Barrett. Ella James’s writing is so intriguing, and mysterious and just pulls me in. It gets me so hooked in every scene. The way she wrote the characters and their relationship just wow. The mystery was so well done, the twists were done so well, their relationship was so beautifully done.

Gwenna and Barrett were so beautiful, two broken people finding each other in the world. They had a lot of trauma and worked together for each other. I loved how much Barrett tried to fight his want and need for Gwenna and Gwenna just pushed through all his walls.

The ptsd from both characters and trauma was so insanely well done, like wow. When Barrett was having flashbacks I actually felt ill and I was sweating with him because it felt so real and raw. Like you can feel his pain so viscerally, he was so incredibly broken and you couldn’t help but feel so fucking bad. And the way Gwenna helped him every single day, even though she had so much trauma herself from her accident and everything she lost because of it. She has the absolute biggest heart, i literally wanted to cry because she was so fucking amazing, with such a beautiful personality, who just makes everyone feel good just because she exists. She is hiding herself because of her accident but cant help feel the pull towards barrett and he himself helps her get out of her shell.

Their connection was so beautifully written, you could see and feel every moment between them through the relationship. Their pull towards each other was too strong even though they tried to fight it. The spice was actually insane, wow it was so fucking good🥵 They were opposited but were literally made for each other. I seriously felt their connection through the pages. I loved every moment between them.

Omg Kellan & Cleo cameos actually made me cry. I cant express with words how happy I am to see them happy😭😭 That flashback scene we got of Kellan and Barrett broke my goddamn heart so bad. Im so insanely happy that their relationship was so good in the present and they fixed their problems. I loved the scenes with all four characters.

Oh man, OB-SESSED WITH THIS ONE.

Yeah there was romance but this baby was packed FULL of suspense and mystery. Just enough to keep my eyes wide and my breaths short. The mystery element in this one was so fantastic. Even if you say you knew what was going to be the outcome or how this story was going to pan out, it was still very well written and I don’t think anyone can argue that. The metaphors, the descriptions, analogies, tension. All of it. It was so well done that you don’t even know who is bad, who is good, who is helping, nothing.

“Love doesn’t give choices. It’s like a blanket: protective. I’m not ready to drop it yet. Sometimes I think I never will be.”

The one thing I have noticed about Ella and her books that I have read this far is that she writes characters that are so dynamic and realistic its completely mind-blowing. Barrett was exceptional and his POV chapters were so captivating. You empathize with him and you want to understand him and hug him but then you’re swooning over him because his level of broodiness is just RIGHT.

The only thing that kept this from being a 5 star read for me was the inconsistency and grammar/spelling. Some chapters would say “Barrett” at the top but they would really be in Gwenna’s POV. I feel like these should have been discovered in the beta process or the editing process. And one big hole that had to do with Jamie towards the end.

BUT, just like in Sloth, the sex in this book was riveting and so damn hot. *side eye*

This book might be long but it is well worth it. I never wanted it to end and it wasn’t even repetitive. Ella kept a great pace and flow that made me feel like I wasn’t just reading “some book that never ended”. It had a purpose. It had a reason. I was completely consumed and in love with not just the book but the characters and the plot line. It was very much worth the wait and I look forward to her next ones that she releases.

After reading SLOTH, which I loved, I was anxiously waiting for the release of this book. Unfortunately, the anticipation far exceeded the actual book. It was too long, too many confusing flashbacks and a painfully slow build up to the mystery!

I'm a big fan of Ms. James and have been pleased with many of her other books. This one just didn't do it for me, but I will continue to read her work. SLOTH was my favorite!

[re-read] I did a word search for "fuck" and the word appears 437 times within the book. This is me saying there are too many sex scenes. The sex : plot ratio is way off.

Bears! I totally love bears. Cute, honey eating, hibernating bears. I love them as much as I love sloths. I love them too.

Warning - long, long book. Warning - keep track of nicknames so you know who is who. Bear = Barrett, Gwenna = Snowflake aka Piglet aka Pig. Breck = John. I leave you to do the research on the rest.

I love the sort of story where I get to use my sleuthing skills to solve a mystery. I also love the sort of story where love seeps into the heart and melts away the ice that surrounds it. And I love the past/present switch where snippets are revealed and you are left filling in the gaps.

Barrett is a war veteran with a whole bag full of issues. Dead real brothers, dead army brothers, life altering injuries, life altering circumstances, guilt, pain, obsession. Gwen ex model, ex singer, sometime actress but she faces her issues, meets them head on. She is amazingly brave. I love her spirit. I love her bears. I want to see her lopsided smile. What a brilliant human being she is.

Kellan and Cleo fucked like champions, I think I awarded them the gold medal. Guess what - Barrett and Gwen are serious contenders.

I did love Murder. There were editing issues - but if the plot/characters are good enough and I did read a very early release, I can forgive.

As usual, Ella James knows how to write a story, wrap you up, then wrench your emotions a hundred ways before leaving you mind-wrecked -- and loving it! I didn't think I could love a sinful secrets book more than Sloth, but Murder snuck up on me and shanked me right in the heart. I love Barrett and Gwenna.

Remember Kellan from Sloth? (No? You haven't read it? WHY?) Barrett (aka: Bear), Kellan's brother, has a past all of his own -- secrets and inner demons warring within him. His darker side is fighting to complete the mission ahead while his other side finds light in an unexpected place--Gwenna.

Gwenna is tough, yet vulnerable. She's a survivor, but she's still learning how to live again. And no matter how hard she tries to hide away from the world in her bear sanctuary, her new neighbor threatens to shatter the carefully constructed bubble she's resided in for so long. But just like the bears she's rehabilitating, this Bear is as unpredictable as his namesakes.

Whatever you do, don't go into this book assuming you know where Ella will take you because you'll be wrong! She's unpredictable, and we love her for it! Can't wait for the next, and I'll definitely be RE-reading MURDER!

I love it

Ok I've held out writing the review for a week as I had to think about what I wanted to put down without revealing anything as this story is long, mysterious, secretive and leaves you guessing. At times I did not want to put it down and found myself highlighting a lot so I could figure out the who did what? Or what happened before the great revealing? But to be honest even up to the very end when we finally fine out Ella got cute and she through in another twist!

I have to say, when I got to the end I thought I was disappointed at the great revealing, but then I thought hold up wait, it was brilliant and the secret though sad and heart breaking.....poor Bear having to carry such a weight :(

Anyway, it was a beautiful love sorry, well written and Ella executed the mystery/secret perfectly. Sorry I can't put in details as just like Sloth I don't want to ruin the story. But she does bring Kellan and Cleo back which is nice. It is a long book, but I loved it.

The story was good, but it was predictable; no shock factor for me on any of the supposed it plot twists. That said, this book it's main problem? Way. Too. Fucking. Long. And way too fucking repetitive. In some weird shit. What was with all the Bible crap that sprung up sporadically, but was connected to nothing?
I suppose reading my introduction here, you probably think that I didn't enjoy this read. You would be wrong. I actually did enjoy this read quite a bit. It just very desperately needs a very heavy hand at editing.

After giving it my best try I decided to give up around 45%. At this point reading has become more mature than an enjoyment. I feel like I've been reading for ever and getting nowhere the flashbacks are becoming monotonous, and overall the book is just entirely too long. I am curious to know what the big twist is that I've been reading about and all the reviews but unfortunately I'm getting out because I just can't force myself to read anymore. I have Sloth, which is the first book in the series. I'm considering still giving a shot. hopefully it's better than Murder.

Get it, Read it, LOVE it!!!!

If you love secrets, suspense, action, love, twists, a strong woman and a sexy bear (love me some Bear!!) READ THIS BOOK!!! I could not put this book down. I read it within 24 hours. Ella will pull you in with her writing until the very end. However, she will leave you with a massive book hangover! I also loved that Kellan and Cleo made an appearance, so we are able to get an update on them from Sloth. Highly recommend!

I tried

This story had a unique plot line, and was full of mystery, but honestly it didn't do it for me. I had to push myself to get through it. There were too many flashbacks for my taste, it was a little confusing. Also, it was such a slow build up, it was painful. I gave it two stars, because it was so tedious to get through all the flashbacks, but maybe it will suit someone else. It seems like it's not an objectively bad book, just not at all for me. Even a little bit.

Loved Murder

Barrett Kellan's Brother (remember Kellan from Sloth) well he has a past of his own and it isn't a pretty one.

Loved Gwenna, she is a survivor after a accident that happened. she is trying to live again.

I really didn't know how the book would play out but as with Ella you can never guess what will happen this book another roller coaster of emotions can't wait for book 3
